Rising global sports outlet Dazn reported a 98% rise in total streaming hours in 2019, to 507 million from 256 million.
The rematch in December between heavyweight fighters Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr. was the most-viewed event of the year, though Dazn did not break out viewership stats for any individual events. The numbers shared Tuesday reflect both live and on-demand viewing, but the vast majority of consumption on Dazn is live, reflecting the nature of sports. Consistent with the approach of most subscription streaming services, which don’t rely on traditional advertising revenue driven by ratings, Dazn generally releases only select bits of data about viewing on its platform.
Based in the UK and backed by billionaire Len Blavatnik, Dazn operates in nine countries, including Japan, Germany, Brazil, the U.S. and Canada. John Skipper, who spent 20 years at ESPN, six of them as its president, has been overseeing Dazn’s expansion as its executive chairman.

YouTube revealed its top videos of the year on Thursday, with Lil Nas X and Shawn Mendes being two of the standout performers when it came to music videos, while established creators like PewDiePie also made an appearance on its year-end roundup.
Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” which featured Billy Ray Cyrus, was the most-viewed music video in the U.S. this year. The video for the mammoth single, which was uploaded in early April, has racked up nearly 470 million views so far — even though it only includes the song and artwork of two horses galloping; the live-action music video that came out the following month, pulling in about 400 million views, ended up being the fifth most-viewed U.S. music video of the year.
Internationally, though, the song was “only” the fifth most-liked music video of the year, falling behind Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, who grabbed the top slot with “Senorita.

The ESPYs’ television broadcast only paints so much of the picture of what went down at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles from sports’ biggest award ceremony. Viewers at home saw Tracy Morgan host, celebrities like Sandra Bullock present and athletes including Drew Brees, Alex Morgan and Giannis Antetokounmpo receive awards, but they didn’t quite catch all the exciting moments left off TV. Here’s what they missed:
“Fresh Prince” Dwyane Wade: During a commercial break karaoke challenge, Wade showed his skills on the mic as he rapped along to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song. The retired basketball superstar laid down the rhymes from the comfort of his own seat, next to his wife, Gabrielle Union. “In West Philadelphia born and raised…” Wade rapped, filling in the remainder of the song with perfect memory as the lyrics cut out.

A massive 25-1 underdog stunned the boxing world Saturday night at New York’s Madison Square Garden, winning the heavyweight championship and becoming the first Mexican heritage fighter to take the title.
Andy Ruiz Jr. dropped Anthony Joshua four times before the fight was stopped at 1:27 of the seventh round. Ruiz, whose tubby frame was the opposite of Joshua’s chiseled body, was a late replacement for Brooklyn’s Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller in the bout.
The astonishing win was reminiscent of Mike Tyson’s upset loss to Buster Douglas, or Muhammad Ali being beaten by Leon Spinks.
Ruiz was himself knocked down early in the third round, but came back strong in the same round and dropped Joshua twice. He also dropped him twice in the seventh round.
“I just want to thank God for giving me this victory,” Ruiz said to a standing ovation from the sold-out Msg crowd.
