Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke are just a couple of over 20 musicians who’ve contributed to Light in the Attic & Friends, a covers compilation that’ll be released for Record Store Day’s annual Black Friday event. As a preview, the father-daughter actor duo have shared their rendition of Willie Nelson’s “We Don’t Run,” featuring production from Christian Lee Hutson and mixing by Jay Som’s Melina Duterte.
Considering the delicate indie folk Maya releases on her own, it’s not too much of a surprise that Nelson’s classic outlaw country would be a staple of the Hawke household while she was growing up: “This song is off Willie’s brilliant album Spirit, which has been a mainstay in our home since it was released in 1996,” Ethan said in a statement. “Everybody needs a good anthem song. This is one of the best.”

In a city where you can discover a film festival every weekend of the year, perhaps the most unique of such offerings is located in Rockaway, Queens. Taking place just a few blocks from the beach, the 6th edition of the Rockaway Film Festival will occur August 19-August 27, and we’re pleased to exclusively debut the lineup of award-winning documentaries, premieres, live music and dance performances, shorts programmes, and rare repertory screenings.
Organized by Sam Fleischner and Courtney Muller and sponsored by Blundstone®, Istic Illic Pictures, and NYC Ferry, this year’s edition will open at their flagship outdoor theater, Arverne Cinema (constructed using scraps of boardwalk that were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy), with Disney’s famous feature masterpiece Fantasia. There will be a program of shorts preceding it by cine-magician Oskar Fishinger, whose groundbreaking animations changed the cinematic frontier. The festival will also present the New York Premiere of...

From “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood” showrunner Jason Katims comes another dynamic story adapted from Ann Napolitano’s best-selling novel. “Dear Edward” follows Edward Adler (Colin O’Brien), the lone survivor of a tragic plane crash, as he adjusts to living with his aunt Lacy (Taylor Schilling) and uncle John (Carter Hudson) after losing his parents and brother in the accident.
The show also splits between narratives of other friends and family members connected to the crash through lost loved ones. Dee Dee (Connie Britton) lost her husband Charles, who had a secret life in Los Angeles that she did not know about. Linda (Amy Forsyth) lost her husband Gary, and she is pregnant with his child. Adrianna (Anna Uzele) lost her grandmother, a prominent New York congresswoman and her boss. Kojo (Idris Debrand) comes to New York from Ghana to care for his niece Becks (Khloe Bruno) because his sister...

Patti Smith isn’t one to get cabin fever, but this past year has been the exception, as the pandemic left her grounded in her home city. “I haven’t left New York in over a year, which is the longest I’ve been rooted since my children have grown,” she tells Rolling Stone. “I’m not used to being rooted in one place. But I’ve spent most of my time writing.”
Now that the world is in the process of reopening, the globe-trotting artist and musician is ready to get back onstage.

Neil Young has only performed “Motion Pictures (For Carrie)” once — at New York’s Bottom Line in 1974 — but that hasn’t stopped artists from covering the gut-wrenching On the Beach track for years. Singer-songwriter Steve Gunn released a rendition of the song via Amazon Music, a day before the album’s 45th anniversary.
Gunn’s cover gives the track a funereal touch. His stark, husky voice looms over the lyrics: “Well, all those people, they think they got it made/ But I wouldn’t buy, sell, borrow or trade/Anything...

In the spring of 2003, Steve Gunn spent two months drawing lines on a wall in Beacon, New York. He was in his twenties at the time, not long out of college and still years away from his current life as a highly respected singer-guitarist. The lines were part of a long-term installation by conceptual pioneer Sol LeWitt at Dia:Beacon, the airy temple of modern art that would open later that year in a former Nabisco factory overlooking the Hudson River.

Steve Gunn presents vivid wayfarer characters in his new song “Vagabond.” The song appears on his forthcoming album, The Unseen in Between, which will be released on January 18th via Matador Records. It follows Gunn’s previously released LP singles, “New Moon” and “Stonehurst Cowboy.”
Named after Gunn’s favorite Agnes Varda film, the pensive, twangy “Vagabond” features Gunn’s intricate picking as Gunn describes wandering characters like, “Mona” who’s “camped out in a graveyard/ Took a job and cleaned some tombstones/ Like lovers in a crooked dream” and...

Singer-guitarist Steve Gunn has been making refined, laidback folk-rock for over a decade, music that fits squarely alongside Stephen Malkmus and Kurt Vile in the “beardly guitar jams by guys who don’t actually have beards” section of your local record shop. He’s versed in Grateful Dead-style cosmic country, English traditionalism a la Jackson C. Frank and Richard Thompson and jazz-influenced improv (“Seagull For Chuck Berry,” from last year’s Bay Head, a collaboration with drummer John Truscinski, was like a Sonny Sharrock vision of “Havana Moon.”

What a year in rock music! There, I said it. Too much to take in. Like a rowboat taking in more water than I can bail out. I keep getting new music recommended to me by friends, publicists, old lovers, dudes on subways, songs blasting in hipster boutiques; freakin' new music was everywhere. I got tipped to U.K. acts such as punk rockers Sleaford Mods, poetry rapper Kate Tempest, and folkster Jake Bugg; there was a new pop rock opus by Dan Wilson, and soulful Brooklynite Selena Garcia, and much more. I could barely compile my "best of/favorites of 2014" list knowing that I'll probably discover even more music after I've completed it. But here goes...my ten favorite tracks from 2014, a few essential reissues, and my ten favorite albums, yes, albums, like on real heavy duty vinyl, with two sides and everything.
