The Gucci family saga that entered the global pop culture arena with Ridley Scott’s movie “House of Gucci” is set for another take — this time in the TV sphere, and with the real Gucci family on board as part of the production team.
Gaumont, the French film and television group behind “Narcos,” “Lupin” and upcoming fashion world series “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,” has signed an agreement with producer Giorgio Gucci, who represents the Gucci family, to make a TV series about the rise of the iconic Gucci brand. The show will follow the company’s beginnings with founder Guccio Gucci and delve into the conflicts that ensued within the fashion family dynasty that led to the sale of their empire.
The still-untitled project is in the development stage with no director or cast attached, but is looking to shoot in Italy, the U.S., France and the U.K.

One of the most memorable things about Ridley Scott's incredible Roman epic "Gladiator" is just how insufferable Joaquin Phoenix's character Commodus can be. He serves as a foil to Russell Crowe's Maximus at every turn, behaving like a petulant child more often than not. He's cruel, spoiled, and self-centered, played by Phoenix with a kind of intensity that makes him a particularly impressive villain. The only problem is that Scott doesn't think that Commodus is the real villain at all.
The charmingly blunt Scott sat down with Deadline while promoting his latest film, "Napoleon," which stars Phoenix as the infamous Napoleon Bonaparte, and he was asked about casting Phoenix as such villainous characters. Scott was quick to correct, explaining that he didn't think Commodus was really the villain of "Gladiator," and he had some pretty compelling reasons as to why. Method acting isn’t for everyone, but some derive a particular thrill from escaping into the personalities they play on screen. It’s a way to embody the character completely, surrendering to their will and whim within reason. Lady Gaga is a significant fan of the technique, as evidenced by the actress keeping her Italian accent while playing Patrizia Reggiani for Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. She also stayed in character as Ally Maine for years leading up to 2018’s A Star is Born. While it’s possible to admire the dedication to playing a part, some find the practice frustrating and disruptive in the workplace. Take Lawrence Sher, for example, who’s the cinematographer for the Todd Phillips sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. During a recent podcast interview, Sher discussed feeling alienated by Gaga due to the star’s request to be called ‘Lee’ during filming.

Lady Gaga is up to her usual Method acting tricks again, again, according to “Joker: Folie à Deux” cinematographer Lawrence Sher.
In a recent podcast interview circulated online, Sher said Lady Gaga’s assistant director asked that she be called “Lee” during the production, and that suddenly changed the dynamic of the set.
“I didn’t know Stefani at all,” he said, referring to the “Fame Monster” icon’s born name, “Stefani Germanotta.” “Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Because again, maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space. And then I remember for a week, being like, god, I feel like we are disconnecting. Not even connecting. We are like on opposites. And I would say to my crew, ‘Jesus, I can’t, like, crack it. She either hates me or we hate each other.

Fame is far from the only occupational hazard in Hollywood.
Lately, it seems there’s a new headline every week detailing the varying degrees actors have suffered for the craft — everything from the psychological torture of getting in character to broken limbs or back injuries while filming and even the mental gymnastics required to decompress from a difficult role. Or, simply fainting while watching another actor suffer.
After the first public showing in New York of A24’s Beau Is Afraid, auteur Ari Aster admitted during a Q&a that Joaquin Phoenix passed out during a scene in which his title character was not in front of cameras but rather just present to help co-star Patti LuPone through her own intense scene. “All of a sudden, he fell out of frame,” Aster recalled. “I knew it was bad because he was letting people touch him and people were tending to him.

Lady Gaga has shown that she is more than a singer by landing several acting gigs. Recently, she starred in the 2021 film The House of Gucci with other big-name stars. She had the lead role and went the extra mile to prepare for the part.
For instance, Lady Gaga ate pasta and bread to gain weight. She also watched plenty of animal videos to prepare herself for the movie. She made sure she became buried in the role before production began.

Lady Gaga took her "House of Gucci" role very seriously: the singer-actress spoke in an Italian accent for months, refusing to break character, and went above and beyond to bring Patrizia Reggiani to life. The actress disappeared into the role, sinking right in to bring to life one of the biggest scandals in fashion history. Gaga went to great lengths to get into the headspace of the wealthy, affluent socialite who ordered a hitman to murder her husband.

The clown prince of crime is set to make his return to the big screen — and it’s sounding weirder and weirder the more we hear about it.
Released in 2019, Todd Phillip’s original “Joker” film presented a reimagined version of the classic “Batman” antagonist, following the character in his civilian identity of Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) in a run-down ’80s version of Gotham. The film drew inspiration from Martin Scorsese films such as “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy” in its portrayal of Arthur’s journey into madness, making it one of the more memorable comic book films in recent memory.
Despite mixed reviews and moral panic at the time that the film would inspire real world violence, “Joker” was a box office success, grossing over 1 billion against a 62.5 million budget. In addition, the film received an eye-popping 11 Oscar nominations and two wins, with Phoenix following...

Movie releases were turned on their heads over the past two years while theaters were closed and people were staying home because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of this, many movies that came out in 2020 and 2021 were released to streaming services in a way that hadn't happened before. Now that theaters are back up and running, though, some studios are doing hybrid releases: putting movies in theaters and on streaming platforms at the same time. Not "House of Gucci," though. The movie, starring Adam Driver and Lady Gaga, was released exclusively in theaters on Nov. 24, 2021.
In "House of Gucci" - which is, of course, about the titular fashion house's dynasty - Lady Gaga plays Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci (Driver) who was convicted of ordering Gucci's 1985 murder. Lady Gaga may be a multi-hyphenate talent, but even she couldn't have pulled off those major House of Gucci hair looks without the help of a talented team working behind the scenes. Throughout awards season, critics have been buzzing about her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott's film. And while her acting skills, accent and fashion choices are award-worthy, Gaga's impeccable beauty looks in the film nearly stole the show! In fact, House of Gucci could walk away with the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2022 Oscars. To get in character for “House of Gucci,” Lady Gaga spent the better part of last year inhabiting the mind, body and spirit of Patrizia Reggiani, the Italian socialite who was convicted of hiring a hitman to kill her former husband, Maurizio Gucci. Though the film wrapped production and opened in theaters last year, Gaga did not officially shed the role until Thursday at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.
“It’s hard to say goodbye to art because you learn so much about yourself,” she said, getting increasingly emotional during her lengthy, 13-minute speech for best actress. “But I will cherish this award like it was handed to me by my ancestors.”
The annual gathering, bringing together A-list actors and filmmakers and the writers who critique their work, marks Gaga’s first and last stop on the awards trail since she was snubbed by the Oscars. “I only get to do this once,...

Thursday night’s Omicron-delayed New York Film Critics Circle Awards dinner at Tao in the Meatpacking District in New York City gave many of this year’s Oscar nominees — and a few Oscar also-rans — a last chance to unbutton and let loose and celebrate before the big show finally, finally arrives a week from Sunday.
Attendees at the stylish and quite dimly lit event included NYFCC Best Director winner Jane Campion, who this time very carefully read her prewritten remarks off a piece of paper after her clearly riffed-upon Critics Choice Awards speech last weekend wrapped her up in backlash.
There was also Best First Film winner Maggie Gyllenhaal who, during arrivals on a cramped, packed swath of red carpet in Tao’s upstairs floor, swanned up to Best Foreign Language Film winner Joachim Trier and “Worst Person in the World” star Renate Reinsve. “I loved your movie,” Gyllenhaal, the...

Even Anne Hathaway couldn’t help but cosplay as Lady Gaga.
Hathaway revealed during “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on March 15 that she teased “WeCrashed” co-star Jared Leto with the iconic “father, son, House of Gucci” prayer during production of the Apple TV+ series.
“I really respect Jared’s process, and I had a wonderful time working with whoever that was, and we really created the most beautiful connection between us,” Hathaway said. “The day the ‘House of Gucci’ trailer came out, I mean, I had to do something. I couldn’t just let it be.”
And so Hathaway opted to prank her fellow Oscar winner, famous for remaining in character during production.
“We shot a really intense scene all day and [I said], ‘Just one more thing,’ and I go, ‘Father, Son, House of Gucci’ because you have to!” Hathaway joked, mimicking Lady Gaga’s Italian accent and doing the sign of the cross.

Jared Leto has done the comic book thing before.
Playing the Joker in the 2016 film “Suicide Squad” and again in Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” is a memory the 50-year-old actor looks back on fondly. “That role was an opportunity of a lifetime,” he says. “And I got a chance to do it twice.”
Getting to dramatize a villain as ubiquitous as the Clown Prince of Crime is delicious, but it doesn’t always leave a lot of new ground to break. Leto’s turn as the Joker came after Heath Ledger (in 2008’s “The Dark Knight”) and before Joaquin Phoenix (in 2019’s “Joker”), who both won Oscars for their interpretations.
So Leto was eager to get an offer for the lead role in “Morbius,” a superhero tentpole set in Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters, whom no actor has ever played in a movie or a TV show. Channeling...

Photo: Method Acting, Lady Gaga in 'House of Gucci' In the upcoming highly anticipated ‘House Of Gucci’ Lady Gaga will star as the real-life Patrizia Reggiani, a woman who married into the famous fashion family but her ambition ultimately leads to the murder of her husband. The Ridley Scott crime drama is based on real events, and the real Reggiani reportedly was upset that Gaga never consulted her about her perspective. In response to this claim, Gaga told British Vogue that she had done other things to get into the role. “It is three years since I started working on it, and I will be fully honest and transparent: I lived as her for a year and a half. And I spoke with an accent for nine months of that. Off-camera, . I never broke. I stayed with her,” said Gaga. The commitment to her role did not go without psychological effects,...

It's been more than three years since Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper first graced our screens as Jackson and Ally Maine in "A Star Is Born," and we're still not over the iconic casting. So imagine our delight when the former costars reunited inside Barker Hangar at the 2022 SAG Awards. Last time, in the Almost There series, I asked you to vote on what performance should be explored next. Mike Faist in West Side Story was the resounding victor. However, since Spielberg's musical is still not available to stream or rent, we'll first look at the runner-up choice from that poll. She's none other than Lady Gaga in House of Gucci. After scoring nominations with all major precursors, she seemed set for her second acting Oscar nod. However, as luck would have it, her outrageous awards campaign ended in a snub from the Academy. She might still win some trophies before the season is over, but that coveted little golden man is out of reach.
While it's easy to lose oneself in the glamour of the role and those ridiculous interviews, there's plenty to admire in Gaga's star turn as Patrizia Reggiani, ex-wife to Maurizio Gucci, who...

“House of Gucci” was all but shut out by the Oscars, reaping only a bid for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Conversely, it earned three SAG Awards nominations. The cast of this crime drama contends for Best Ensemble while Lady Gaga and Jared Leto merited mention for their portrayals of the vengeful Patrizia Reggiani and hapless Paolo Gucci respectively.
Of this trio of bids for guild honors, Leto is best poised to pull off an upset in Best Supporting Actor. He certainly boasts a higher level of recognition with SAG voters than frontrunners Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) and Troy Kotsur (“Coda”). And his immersive, go-for-broke performance could well win the votes of many of his peers. Indeed, he won here in 2014 for another transformative performance in “Dallas Buyers Club.”
Leto’s turn as the black sheep of the Gucci dynasty may have been polarising but could appeal to SAG voters.

Roberto Bentivegna, co-writer for the Ridley Scott-directed “House of Gucci,” developed most of the script over Zoom when he was stuck in Colombia during the onset of the pandemic. And yet, for a virtual screenwriting experience, it went off without a hitch.
“The process was very smooth,” Bentivegna told TheWrap about the process of writing the script. “I read the script in February of 2019, and we spent a couple of months casting the movie,” he said. “After that I left to go to Bogota, Colombia, which is where I am right now and the pandemic started and I got stuck here. It was really just me Ridley, Giannina [Facio Scott] his wife and the producer — and then every now and again, Adam Driver would show up on Zooms unannounced [with] questions and concerns and comments about about his character.”

After dipping her toes into the film acting pool with appearances in “Machete Kills” and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” pop superstar Lady Gaga took on her first starring part in 2018’s “A Star Is Born.” The following year, she became the first actress since Gabourey Sidibe to be recognized by the Screen Actors Guild for her debut headlining role. Having landed in the current Best Actress lineup as the star of “House of Gucci,” she has now made history as the only woman to earn SAG nominations for both of her first two lead film performances.
Gaga’s competitors in this year’s Best Actress race are Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Jennifer Hudson (“Respect”), and Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”). First-time lead nominee Hudson is the group’s only past individual film acting champ, having prevailed as a supporting...

Olivia Colman has now racked up eight nominations from the Screen Actors Guild Awards over the course of only four years. She has taken home two awards, as part of the ensemble of “The Crown’s” third and fourth seasons, but she has surprisingly been a bridesmaid for all of her individual nominations. This may change at the upcoming SAG Awards thanks to her Best Actress nomination for “The Lost Daughter.” And she just might do it as the classic apple in a barrel of oranges.
The SAG Best Actress lineup outside of Colman is a celebration of the year’s top biopic performances. The most surprising snub of this round of Oscar Nominations was Lady Gaga missing her earned spot in the Leading Actress category. I am not speaking of quality, but about campaign effort. She did and said literally anything 'an Italian girl living in NY' can to fit the profile of an Oscar-nominated actress, at least 1990s style. I have to confess I am going to miss her ability to offer up a new small, crazy detail or anecdote each interview about how immersive and challenging it was to play Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci.
She is in good company. With their glamorous attitude and dazzling personas pop stars tend to catch the attention of Hollywood, but this year the results with Academy voters were not all welcoming...

In another blow to mass-appealing movies at the Oscars, Academy voters decided to deplete MGM/Uar’s Ridley Scott-directed House of Gucci of all but one nomination, that being for Makeup and Hairstyling.

Welp, that was anticlimactic. After months of generating Oscars buzz, Lady Gaga's "House of Gucci" performance failed to receive a best actress nomination for this year's Academy Awards, meaning all those "father, son, House of Gucci" chants we did for good luck were in vain. Best Picture Oscar nominee “Don’t Look Up” focuses on a world thrown into chaos and uncertainty due to an impending apocalyptic event. That same energy applied to the lead up to this year’s Oscar nominations, which was once again defined by a pandemic that forced actors, directors and more contenders to campaign from behind their computer screens. Even top awards strategists conceded in the last few days that they had no idea who would make the final cut since it wasn’t easy to poll voters who were watching this year’s contenders from screeners at home and not on FYC screenings and events.
Now that the nominees have been announced, the 94th Academy Awards could be a good night for Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog.” The drama, directed by Jane Campion, led all films with 12 nominations and marked the first time that a woman was nominated...

Frederic Aspiras, hairstylist to Lady Gaga in “House of Gucci” has become the second Asian American to be nominated for a Hair and Makeup Oscar.

The award was created by the Academy in 1981 after complaints that there was no way to recognize the makeup artists for the 1980 film “The Elephant Man.”
Aspiras, who is of Vietnamese-Filipino descent, also earned a BAFTA nomination last week and is nominated for a Makeup and Hairstylist Guild nomination. He has worked with Gaga for over 13 years, including creating the look sported by Gaga for Variety’s Actors on Actors cover. Speaking with Variety recently about the significance of being recognized for his work, Aspiras said, “I started with Lady Gaga 13 years ago, and fans from around...

Lady Gaga is in the hunt for her second Best Actress Oscar nomination for her widely talked about role in “House of Gucci.” If she wins it would be her second Oscar after previously claiming Best Song for “Shallow” for “A Star Is Born” (2018). Already this season, Gaga has received major accolades from the New York Film Critics Circle and Capri Hollywood International Film Festival for the MGM film. She is also the only Best Actress contender to earn bids at BAFTA, Critics Choice and SAG Awards. Gold Derby currently has her in third place to win the Oscar, but I think our pundits are underestimating her.
Here are five reasons why you shouldn’t discount Lady Gaga’s chances of taking home the gold.
1. “House of Gucci’s” SAG Award turnout.

The Gucci family saga isn’t quite over.
Just months after the release of Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” — a film that could see Lady Gaga nominated for her second Oscar — a TV drama and documentary focusing on the Gucci family is in the works from Comcast-backed Sky Studios.
The company is in early stages of development on a high-end TV series, and is in pre-production on a documentary series, both of which will tell “the story of a great family and a great brand,” says producer Nils Hartmann, senior VP for Sky Studios Germany and Italy.
Both projects were brought roughly a year ago to Sky by Marco Belardi for Leone Film Group, which led to an agreement with several members of the Gucci family, including Alessandro Gucci, Guccio Gucci Jr. and Giorgio Gucci. Giorgio Gucci is a young Italian producer who will serve as executive producer on the still-untitled docuseries.

This year’s Best Actress discussion / post-bafta nomination shake-up has reached a new height of confused scrambling. Things have, for now, refocused on the single consistent presence throughout precursor season: Lady Gaga as the murderous Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci. When watching the film, it became clear to me how much Gaga’s distinctive visage bears striking resemblance to that of the great Italian star Monica Vitti. This came into sad focus today on my learning of the legend’s passing on Wednesday at the age of ninety from complications related to Alzheimer’s.
I will get quickly back to the subject at hand but to help in drawing out Vitti’s unique gifts, a little more on Gaga in Gucci as a comparison…...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, with Oscar nominations days away, we circle back on, of course, Best Actress.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve made it to the end of Phase One, which means it’s time for Jane Campion to smirk like Thanos and for this year’s Oscars race to come into full focus. Voting for Oscar nominations closed earlier this week and we’ve already made our picks in all 23 categories. So while it’s mostly all over but the shouting until more shouting commences on Tuesday morning, what better time than the present to take one last look at our favorite race, Best Actress. This one remains a knotted mess, with so many potential nominees that it hardly feels like anyone is safe.
