It all started in 1988 with an obsession: Canadian comic Carolyn Taylor, now known as one of the stars and co-creators of “Baroness Von Sketch Show,” was a “closeted 15-year-old” watching Olympic figure skating in her aunt’s living room. She recalls Katarina Witt performing a free skate to “Carmen” in an iconic red costume. At the very end, Witt performatively lay down on the ice — and Taylor just wanted to lie next to her.
“It was one of those foundational moments,” Taylor tells Variety. “But then I went on with my life, and didn’t pursue skating or Olympics in any capacity.”
Fast forward to 2016. Taylor was driving in the car with her girlfriend when Whitney Houston’s 1992 song “I Have Nothing” came on the radio. “It was as if I had heard it for the first time,” she recalls. She had a vision of “a professional pairs, gold medalist skating routine,...

“Baroness von Sketch Show” star Carolyn Taylor will front a new unscripted comedy series for Canadian streaming service Crave, produced through Catalyst and Blue Ant Studios.
The six-part comedy series has been commissioned by the Bell Media-owned SVOD, and is produced by Catalyst — the Toronto-based development and funding company focusing on women-centric content — and Blue Ant Studios as part of a strategic partnership to develop female-generated programming for the global marketplace.
Taylor is best known as one of the stars and co-creators of CBC’s comedy hit “Baroness von Sketch Show,” which aired across five seasons from 2016 to 2020. Starring four female comedians, the satirical sketch comedy offered clever takedowns of contemporary culture through the female gaze. Some of the show’s most famous skits include “Private Vagina,” “Mom Says Hello” and “Not All Men.”

Originating on CBC Television in 2016, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” has seen us through the chaos of the last five years. The Canadian sketch comedy series is created by Carolyn Taylor, Meredith MacNeill, Aurora Browne and Jennifer Whalen, a dynamic foursome whose varying talents combine into comedic gold. A smash hit in their native Canada, the series earned a cult following in the U.S. when sketches began making the rounds on YouTube, earning fans in Reggie Watts and Lea Delaria, who shared early videos. IFC brought the series to American audiences in 2017, and will debut the fifth and final season (which premiered in Canada in the fall) on February 24.
“Baroness” always — and proudly — skews feminist, though the comedy is always queen. The humor is a deeply satisfying blend of broad slapstick with sharp satire. Many of the sketches combine a shrewd social criticism, whether of diet culture or parenting double standards,...

Since its premiere in 2016, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” has consistently delivered smart, unexpected, rip-roaring comedy on a range of topics rarely addressed by typical sketch shows. Whether it’s the absurdist escalation of Red Wine Ladies’ Night, or the anti-misogynist virtue signaling of a Queer Theory Reading Group, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” took advantage of under-explored scenarios to produce hilarity that resonated with the everywoman. In its excellent fifth season, the group continues to make good on that promise with no sign of slowing down. Produced by the CBC and airing on IFC in the U.S., “Baroness Von Sketch Show” not only proves Canadian humor translates just fine, but when it comes to sketch comedy, they reign supreme.

When you settle in to celebrate Halloween this week, you need to consider all of your entertainment options.
Sure, you can go with the old standby options -- horror flicks or more family-friendly spooky fare.
But you can also celebrate with some of my favorite women who make costumes seem like a way of life.
That's right! I'm talking about the Baroness von Sketch Show.
The first two episodes of the epic fourth season of Baroness von Sketch Show premieres at Midnight on Halloween aka tonight, and I cannot think of a better way to get into the holiday spirit.
What to Watch Next Week: Apple TV+ Goes Live, Jack Ryan Returns, Last Modern Family Halloween
In my recent What to Watch post, I laid all of the BvSS cards on the table.
Every once in a while, a message bears repeating. So, here goes.

Everyone’s favorite Canadian sketch show (that’s currently airing new episodes and led by four women), “Baroness Von Sketch Show,” is coming back to IFC for its fourth season. And based on the official trailer, it’s still as poignant as ever, as it tackles things like: the horror and anger that comes with the realization that there are somehow full-blown adults who were born in the late 1990s, whether scrunchies are back in style and if they ever were “in style” to begin with, and the most important topic of all, binge-watching.

Fast-paced and irreverent, the series celebrates the absurd and mines the embarrassing, offering a fresh, witty take on relatable moments such as crying at work, waiting in airport security lines, dealing with gossip-obsessed co-workers, co-parenting and more.”

Normally it's a good thing when you get a star like Reggie Watts to serenade you with a song -- but maybe not this time!
On Wednesday's episode of Baroness von Sketch Show, the musical comedian makes a guest appearance in a very funny sketch centered around a woman's 44th birthday.
Three office pals -- played by Baroness' Meredith MacNeill, Aurora Browne and Carolyn Taylor -- hire Watts to make up a song for their co-worker Ashley's (Jennifer Whalen) big day, but the overly specific, meandering tune gets a little too spot-on for her liking. After all, loneliness and IVF aren't two topics you expect to hear in a celebratory song.

For too long, American sketch comedy has been so dominated by “Saturday Night Live” that any other attempts at the form have seemed futile. The trick to not competing directly with the NBC behemoth seems to be to addressing a niche audience that is sorely underserved by the mainstream, such as Comedy Central’s “Key and Peele,” IFC’s “Portlandia,” and now, the brilliant “Baroness Von Sketch Show,” also on IFC. The network bought the series from the CBC, and has been airing the first two seasons for American audiences who are hungry for something different.
Now in the middle of its IFC run, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” is written and performed by Aurora Browne, Meredith MacNeill, Carolyn Taylor, and Jennifer Whalen. Browne, Taylor, and Whalen met at Second City in Toronto, and MacNeill is a classically trained actor who came to comedy after studying at Rada. While the show has a decidedly woman-centric bent,...

Cult comedy Baroness von Sketch Show may already be on its second season in its native Canada, but U.S. audiences are getting the chance to catch up on all the laughs now that the show is airing on IFC.
With shows like Portlandia, The Birthday Boys and Comedy Bang! Bang!, the network has been a haven for quirky, creative sketch comedy, but Baroness is a welcome niche in the crowded field: four women over 40 skewering the absurdities of everyday life. Where many other sketch shows are wildly over-the-top or lean towards bonkers scenarios, actor-writers Carolyn Taylor, Aurora Browne, Jennifer Whalen and Meredith MacNeill take things far enough to be hilarious, but not so insane that scenes are unrelatable.

Having just wrapped the first half of its second season, the TV Land series features Katydids members Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O’Brien and Kathryn Renee Thomas as an eclectic group of educators who work at an elementary school, doing their best not to warp young minds with their outrageous behavior.

As I mentioned in a previous column, I’ve been on a Rex Stout/Nero Wolfe reading/re-reading jag as of late and have been enjoying it greatly. As other commentators have noted, the pleasure in the Nero Wolfe novels is not so much the plots, which have been noted as serviceable, but in the characters, especially the rotund and eccentric genius, Nero Wolfe, and his wise cracking legman and assistant, Archie Goodwin.
(Sidenote: when I first met the late and great comic book writer/editor, Also Archie Goodwin, I meant to ask him about Wolfe but decidedly, I think prudently, that he had probably gotten enough of that in his life. End digression.)
Stout had written 33 novels and 39 short stories on the pair between 1934 and his death in 1975. After his death, his estate authorized further Wolfe and Goodwin adventures by Robert Goldsborough who has written ten books, one of...

Delocated star and creator Jon Glaser has been a fixture of the comedy community for well over a decade: He started at Chicago's Second City; joined the now-storied writing staff of The Dana Carvey Show, alongside Louis C.K., Robert Carlock, and other greats; and went on to write for Late Night with Conan O' Brien for a half-decade. But this year is shaping up to be his biggest yet. In the past two months alone he's had roles on Girls (as Hannah's former-addict neighbor Laird) and Parks and Recreation (as the show's only villain, Councilman Jamm). And although his Adult Swim program is coming to an end March 7, it had a good three-year run. With all this going on, Vulture enlisted Eugene Mirman (Glaser's friend and repeat Delocated guest star) to check in on his fellow comic. Herewith, a slightly condensed version of their conversation, including a glimpse at...

The Emmy-winning Glee star will make her Broadway debut taking on the role of evil orphanage matron Miss Hannigan this spring in the Broadway production of Annie, currently playing at the Palace. Jane Lynch is stepping in for Katie Finneran, the original actor in the role, who is taking time off to shoot NBC’s new Michael J. Fox comedy series, which has a 22-episode order for a fall 2013 launch. It hasn’t been determined when Finneran is leaving; the Sony Pictures TV series already has shot its pilot and the show is being done out of NY but no schedule has been set. Lynch, whose stage experience includes a turn with Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company and The Second City, is set in the role from May 16-July 14. Finneran, a two-time Tony winner, starred on Fox’s sitcom I Hate My Teenage Daughter and landed the co-starring...

Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Lynch, who stars in the hit Fox television show Glee as ruthless cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, will take on another great tyrannical role as evil orphanage matron Miss Hannigan in the new Broadway production of Annie at the Palace Theatre 1564 Broadway between 46th and 47th Streets. Lynch, a stage veteran of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company and The Second City, will be making her Broadway debut. She will play Miss Hannigan for eight weeks only, from Thursday, May 16 through Sunday, July 14.

Cheerios, rejoice! Jane Lynch, who won an Emmy as sharp-tongued cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on Fox’s Glee, will make her Broadway debut this spring in the hit musical revival of Annie. The role seems like a perfect fit for the star: Miss Hannigan, the drunken and scheming head of young Annie’s orphanage who melodically complains about being surrounded by “little girls.” Lynch, an Illinois native who got her start in theater at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Second City, will appear in the musical for eight weeks only, from May 16 through July 14.

Chicago — The name on Hollywood audition lists and casting sheets must be unmistakably eye-catching: Rob Belushi.
The 32-year-old actor and comedian is from yes, that Belushi family. He's the son of Jim Belushi and the nephew of the late John Belushi and for the past decade or so an aspiring actor in his own right.
Rob Belushi has guest starred on TV shows like his dad's "According to Jim" and "The Defenders." He's appeared in made-for-tv movies and graced the stand-up stage. Now he's starring on the Spike TV reality program "The Joe Schmo Show" that airs on Tuesday nights.
He calls his famous last name a "double-edged sword."
"I would say people are very interested in seeing me or checking out what I have to offer," Belushi said in an interview in the lobby of a fancy downtown Chicago hotel. "I also think that they have their own expectations...

I was thinking about The Carrie Diaries, and a bizarre truth hit me: It's a great idea for a show! Though Sex and the City ran six seasons, inspecting Carrie Bradshaw's teenage history through whatever overly glamorized or cutesy lens is intriguing. All these years after the HBO hit left the air, Carrie is a beloved and somehow relevant protagonist that everyone has an opinion about. I salute The Carrie Diaries for exploring her deep past. Moreover, I hope it inspires TV networks to mine the potentially fertile backstories of these five other classic TV shows, which range from the broadly comic to the grimly serious.

We will never hear the Sheep Story again. Nor will we enjoy his presence in a room, which was an invitation to good cheer. Paul Galloway, the most incomparable raconteur I ever met in a newsroom, is dead. Everyone who knew him will know what a silence that creates.
I loved the guy. I introduced him to his wife, Maggie. I couldn't see enough of them. It will be impossible to share with you the joy of his company, but I am going to try. Let others write the formal obituaries. All I know is, Paul died at about 3:30 p.m. Monday, at their "winter home" in Tulsa, Okla. There's a Winter Home Story. With Paul, there was a story about everything. He was somewhere in his 70s. When you get to be our age,...

Newly engaged Jason Sudeikis landed a coveted feature article in the February 2013 issue of GQ magazine.
The 37-year-old "SNL" star posed as Batman with Justin Long, who rocked a Robin ensemble, and dished to the mag about everything from the Blue Man Group to his fiancé, Olivia Wilde.
A few highlights from Mr. Sudeiki's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to GQ!
His tips for dating a girl like Olivia:
"Oh boy. First off, when she's speaking, keep your eyes open. Also say 'please' and 'thank you'—that was very helpful. And most important: Just mean what you say and say what you mean."
On almost joining the Blue Man Group:
"I was in Las Vegas, performing with Second City at the time. I had sort of lost a little bit of love for the art form of sketch comedy and made friends with the Blue Man Group guys.

Getting an endorsement from whip-smart comedienne Tina Few is a boon for anyone, but being called a "genius" by the recent Golden Globes co-host and "30 Rock" writer/star is a whole other ballgame.
Fey used that very word to describe Chicago artist Robbie Fulks during a recent "Ask Tina" video extra for "30 Rock."
Fielding a question asking "Who sang the song over Liz and Jenna's greatest sketch of all time?" the former Second City actress revealed "30 Rock" writers and its composer Jeff Richmond (aka Fey's real-life husband) wrote the sung, but that it was sung by Fulks.
Fey went on to describe the artist as a "Chicago-area alt-country genius," before interrupting herself and saying "Why are you still listening to me? You should be going on iTunes right now — Robbie — R-o-b-b-i-e -- Fulks — F-u-l-k-s — buy it. Buy everything."
Other celebrities have praised Fulks' talents—even if it does land them in hot water.

Alanna Ubach has appeared in dozens of TV shows and movies, such as Waiting, House M.D., Hung, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and man more. Recently, she played the role of Jenny in A Haunted House and we had a chance to ask her about her experience working on the movie and her love of horror films:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. For those that haven’t seen A Haunted House, can you tell us about your character in the film?
Alanna Ubach: My character, Jenny, is a horny, married swinger who’s always looking for an excuse to invite Marlon and his girlfriend over for their annual Mandingo parties.
You’ve appeared in a variety of TV shows and feature films. What in particular interested you in taking on a role in this horror-comedy film?
Alanna Ubach: The Marlon Wayans crew has always intrigued me.

We're back with the third and final installment in our set visit report series for The Call, which we visited last August. Up next is cast member and WWE Superstar David Otunga.
During our chat with Otunga on the Westlake, California, set, he dished on the suspense thriller, his preparation for his role as a police officer and lots more.
Scheduled to be released on March 15, 2013, The Call’s narrative revolves around veteran 911 operator ‘Jordan’ (actress Halle Berry), who takes a life-altering call from a teenage girl (Abigail Breslin) who has just been abducted and realizes that she must confront a killer (Michael Eklund) from her past in order to save the girl’s life. There’s great beauty in quiet moments, especially when it comes to two characters connecting on film. Fellini took advantage of silence, as did Godard and Truffaut. Wordless emotions embedded in someone’s face, their eyes, their movements.

Kev F. Sutherland is, sadly, not quite a household name yet. But if you are big into the live comedy scene, attend the Edinburgh Fringe and/or are in the right circles, he is a big name.
Not only is he arguably the man who gave Stephen Merchant and Miranda Hart their first break, but was also the inspiration behind Neil’s Dad The Inbetweeners (Kev’s old friends Damon Beesley and Iain Morris have never actually confirmed this, but we all know it’s true).
Disgustingly multi-talented as a comedian, comic artist, musician, caricaturist and writer among many others (he’s probably a professional bloody plate-spinner in his spare time for all I know…), you might have seen him on Points West, The Culture Show, Comedy Shuffle, Battle of The Books, The One Show and Upstaged.

The introduction of the character is part of a creative overhaul of the show midway through its freshman season, which includes the elimination of a character, played by regular Amanda Setton, and the downgrade of another one, played by Anna Camp, from regular to recurring. Additionally, Stephen Tobolowsky’s recurring character was written off. Grill, repped by Vincent Nastri of Bleecker Street Entertainment, recently appeared on Boardwalk Empire and has upcoming guest stints on Whitney and Don’t Trust the B in Apt.23. Ryan Lee (Super 8) has joined the cast of ABC’s single-camera comedy pilot Trophy Wife.

Chicago – One of the most anticipated gatherings in the local acting community is the annual Chicago Acting in Film Meetup (Cafm) Holiday Party, and this year’s bash is moving to downtown digs at the Hard Rock Hotel on December 10th, 2012. The co-directors of Cafm are actors Grace McPhillips and Steve Scholz.
Cafm was founded by Grace McPhillips five years ago, and has expanded every year since. The membership has a growing and diverse range of employment opportunities in the Windy City, including TV shows (“Chicago Fire”), commercials, films and web series in production. Cafm has established itself as a vital co-mentoring and educational group for working actors in Chicago, with monthly meetings and seminars. Their upcoming holiday event is open to the public, as Grace noted, “Everyone’s invited!”

Alice, is that you? It looks like Tina's equally witty mini-me dropped by the '30 Rock' set for an adorable cameo -- and rolled her eyes like a champ! Do You think that's Tina's daughter? Tina Fey's daughter Alice Richmond, 7, appears to have the comedy chops of her hilarious parents -- dad Jeff Richmond is also a Second City alum -- and showed off her impeccable comedic timing during the Nov. 29 episode of 30 Rock. Although it hasn't been 100 percent confirmed, fans speculated it was Tina's oldest daughter who made the short cameo as a young Liz Lemon. In a flashback scene to Liz as a little kid -- to explain the history behind Liz's infamous eye roll -- it appeared to be Tina's mini-me on screen, providing the hilarious facial expression. We think it is -- she looks Just like Alice, even behind the thick prop glasses! Do You think that's Alice HollyMoms?...

Only after a few minutes of coverage did the anchors learn that the plane crash was staged for a television program that was filming in the area.

Get this: Gilda's Club -- the cancer support group named for Gilda Radner, who once claimed that cancer is "an elite club I'd rather not belong to" -- is getting a new name. The reason? People born after 1989 don't know who Gilda Radner is. Uh, interesting: 20-year-olds seem to know who John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd are, but Gilda Radner, arguably the most original and explosive talent in SNL history, slides under the radar? This is unspeakable news in the worst way possible.
Quick, please memorize these six points and tell them to everybody you know who is born in the '90s. This is an important performer for many reasons. Save the advanced knowledge about her Toronto Godspell stint, Second City, Candy Slice, her Baba Wawa impersonation that used to infuriate Barbara Walters, First Family, The Woman In Red, and the failure of Haunted Honeymoon for semi-advanced children.
