Peter Oosterhuis, a former golf analyst CBS, Sky Sports and Golf Chahhel and two-time winner of the European Tour money title, died Thursday, a day short of his 76th birthday. No cause was given by the PGA Tour, which announced his passing.
Oosterhuis retired from broadcasting in 2014 with early onset Alzheimer’s disease.
During his career, Oosterhuis won seven times on the European Tour, including twice at the French Open. He won the Canadian Open in 1981 on the PGA Tour, beating Jack Nicklaus, Andy North and Bruce Lietzke by one shot.
Oosterhuis played on six consecutive Ryder Cup teams and compiled a 14-11-3 record during an era of U.S. dominance. Oosterhuis played on six losing teams and still had a winning record.
He went 6-2-1 in singles, twice beating Palmer and once Johnny Miller.

Years after the Elvis Presley and Tupac Shakur holograms, another celebrity is being brought back from the dead — this time, through artificial intelligence.
Soul Machines, the company behind AI-powered “digital people,” unveiled its partnership with Authentic Brands Group on Friday for Digital Marilyn, which uses Marilyn Monroe’s likeness to offer “both fans and brands a unique and personalized engagement opportunity.”
Authentic acquired the intellectual property of Monroe in 2011 after it was sold by Anna Strasberg, wife of Monroe’s late acting teacher Lee Strasberg. Monroe had left most of her estate to Lee in her will.
Digital Marilyn is said to “interact with fans in real-time using advanced natural language processing, deep learning and Gpt 3.5.” It replies in Marilyn’s voice and affectations, shares anecdotes from the late star and “even delivers personalized greetings.”

“The first time I came to this studio was 1940 when my father brought me here to show me the stage, and I was about 9 or 10 years old, and I thought, ‘Some day this will all be mine!’ It’s finally come to be – it’s only taken me 92 years to get here!” That’s what five-time Oscar winner and 53-time nominee John Williams said as the curtain was raised on the iconic Sony Pictures Entertainment lot’s newly renamed John Williams Music Building.
Joining in the celebration — and it was a celebration — were Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, Spe Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra (who made opening remarks), filmmaker J.J. Abrams and of course, Williams’ longtime collaborator Steven Spielberg, who instigated the idea of putting the legendary composer’s name on the building where they have worked on 20 or their 29 films, as Spielberg noted.

On Thursday afternoon, the history-filled Sony lot in Culver City — which was the MGM lot during Hollywood’s Golden Age, home to “more stars than there are in heaven” — welcomed film composer John Williams, after whom the studio’s musical building was being renamed.
Williams, 91, who is best known for the scores of Star Wars and 29 Steven Spielberg films — 20 of which were scored in the structure that will henceforth be known as the John Williams Music Building — was on hand, as were many of his collaborators (Spielberg, J.J. Abrams and Spielberg’s producers Frank Marshall and Kristie Macosko Krieger) and colleagues (including fellow film composer Thomas Newman).
Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra kicked off the festivities by noting how much “magic was made right here in this building.” Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman then argued that the greatest of all time in many fields is debatable,...

Tiger Woods said Monday that his sponsorship relationship with Nike has ended, bringing to a close a 27-year partnership that teamed golf’s and the sports world’s biggest athlete with the biggest athletic brand.
The partnership began when Woods turned pro at the age of 20. For Nike, it was perhaps the most prominent teaming with an athlete apart from the company’s even longer association with Michael Jordan.
In exchange for the roughly $500 million it paid to Woods, Nike benefited from billions in sales of its golf apparel and gear. The swoosh-emblazoned red shirt and black cap that Woods wore during climactic Sunday rounds of dozens of championships gave Nike untold extra ad impressions.
The partnership faced a major test in 2009 when a flurry of reports about Woods seeing women other than his then-wife, Elin, put the golfer under a harsh spotlight. While AT&T and others bailed and Woods...

Most established tennis stars have always sought to harness their reputations not solely with their rackets but through humanitarian efforts.
These players have used their platforms and financial resources to aid the underprivileged to access quality education, improved healthcare, and a better life. In hindsight, they always look for avenues to give back to society because of their vast riches.
One way that happens is through establishing not-for-profit foundations and leveraging their star power to organize exhibition events. The most iconic and proficient doubles team in tennis history, comprised of the two twin brothers, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, managed such a cause.
The Bryan brothers partnered with Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation (Nchf), co-founded by former golf great Jack Nicklaus and his wife Barbara. The Nchf is a charitable organization that gives children and families access to world-class pediatric health care.

The voice is unmistakable. As the video of a woman wading into the ocean during sunset played, a melodic tune was overlaid: “I woke up, woke up, woke up in a sunshine stattte, that’s livin’ up to me.”
The voice was clearly that of T-Pain, including his signature Auto-Tune eccentricities. The catch? The lyrics — and T-Pain’s singing voice itself — were created by generative artificial intelligence tech called “Dream Track” from YouTube. The AI wrote the song and re-created T-Pain’s voice so that a user could include it as a personal soundtrack to a video. YouTube also has signed John Legend, Demi Lovato and Charlie Puth, among others, for its Dream Track tech.

Chef Mario Carbone is unwilling to compromise on pre-cooked risotto.
Steadfast in his belief that the dish should be made to order, the Queens-bred culinarian has never served the Italian rice staple on any of his menus, not once during his last 10 years at the helm of Major Food Group’s Carbone, his eponymous restaurant with co-founders Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick that became a culinary-cultural movement.
“It takes 40 minutes to make. There’s no way of speeding that up. The only way to do it would be to pre-cook it, and I am unwilling to serve that dish precooked,” he says.
In this era, however, time is a luxury that Carbone can afford. With the opening of Mfg’s Zz’s Club New York at Hudson Yards, a private membership club, people will pay a $20,000 initiation fee and $10,000 annually to access Lobster Risotto all’Arrabbiata at Carbone Privato, one...

Eddie Merrins, the gentlemanly golf pro at the Bel-Air Country Club who taught the game to the likes of Bing Crosby, Ringo Starr, George C. Scott, Dean Martin, Celine Dion and Jack Nicholson, has died. He was 91.
Merrins died Wednesday after a long illness, according to UCLA, where he coached for 14 years. His son Michael had launched a GoFundMe campaign this year to help the family with expenses.
Nicknamed “The Little Pro,” the 5-foot-7 Mississippi native played on the PGA Tour before serving as Bel-Air’s head pro from 1962 until he was asked to step aside in 2003. However, he remained a beloved fixture at the fabled club as pro emeritus in a jacket/sweater, tie and white driving cap.
Remarkably, Bel Air, which opened in 1925, has had only three head pros: Joe Novak, Merrins and now Dave Podas.

Tiger Woods withdrew from the Masters before the resumption of the third round because of an injury Sunday, ending his streak of completing all 72 holes of every tournament he has played at Augusta National as a professional.
The tournament announced about 90 minutes before play began that Woods, who is still hobbled by the effects of the 2021 car accident that nearly cost him his right leg, had withdrawn. He’d limped through practice rounds early in the week and again during the first and second rounds, but the limp had become more pronounced as the weather worsened.
“I am disappointed to have to Wd this morning due to reaggravating my plantar fasciitis,” Woods said on Twitter. “Thank you to the fans and to (at)TheMasters who have shown me so much love and support. Good luck to the players today!”

What is it about the game of golf that makes good cinema? We can barely keep our eyes open during the PGA Tour. Its tranquil vibes are more relaxing than a glass of warm milk. And we can't name but a handful of players: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, er... Is there a famous "Dave" in there? Still, we could pop in and enjoy at least a dozen films about the sport at a moment's notice on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There's something majestic about the luscious greens, the stillness of the crowd, the whispered play-by-play, and the distant thwack of a ball that translates to the big screen.
Or maybe it's the class struggle, as golf is seen as a gentleman's sport designed for the wealthy. A round of golf at Pebble Beach will set you back nearly 600! Or perhaps we're intoxicated by the psychology of the game,...

Who knew when the year began that a sequel to a 36-year-old movie starring its 60-year-old actor who headlined the original would be the box office champ so far this year? Tom Weiskopf, one of the stars of the 1960s and 1970s Professional Golf Assn. tour and later a broadcaster for CBS and ABC, has died at 79 of pancreatic cancer
An Open Championship winner and 16-time PGA Tour champion, Weiskopf was also a runner-up four times in the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga. He finished in the top 10 in 21 of his 71 major championships played.
The Masters was a particular heartbreak for Weiskopf. In 1969, he lost to George Archer by one. In 1972, he lost to Jack Nicklaus by three. In 1974, Gary Player beat him by two. As the world quite literally burns and floods, it’s important to remember that individualism won’t really solve the climate crisis, especially compared to, say, the wholesale dismantling of the brutal grip the fossil fuel industry has on modern society. Still, there are some individuals who could probably stand to do a bit more to mitigate their carbon footprint — among them, the super-wealthy who make frequent use of carbon-spewing private jets. (And let’s not even get started on yachts.)

The top movie of the year was “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise and this year, the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” is the top flick earning nearly 582 million in North America. “Cobra Kai,”the TV sequel to “Karate Kid,” is one of the most popular series on Netflix and several “Star Trek” series have blasted off on “Paramount+.

One of the top series, “60 Minutes,” is still chugging away on CBS after 54 seasons making it the longest running primetime series on the small screen. And Michael J. Of that he said earlier this week, “72 holes is a long road, and it’s going to be a tough challenge.” Of winning his sixth Masters this weekend, which would tie him with all-time leader Jack Nicklaus, Woods said, “I don...

Golf journalist Tim Rosaforte got the type of tribute today from Jack Nicklaus that journalists usually heap on legends like Jack Nicklaus. Rosaforte, who was one of the top golf journalists in the world and one of the most popular announcers on Golf Channel and NBC Sports, died Tuesday of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 66.
Nicklaus began a three-tweet tribute to Rosaforte with the following: “Many hearts, including Barbara’s & mine, hurt today after the passing of our friend Tim Rosaforte. Tim had a wonderful ability to develop trust from so many, and because of that—plus his work ethic—if there was an important story to be told in golf, Tim usually reported it first.”
The idea of trust comes up repeatedly in a video the golf great posted of his final visit with Roasforte last year, in which they speak about their bond, respect and, as Rosaforte puts it,...

Speaking to the media for the first time since his car crash last February, Tiger Woods declined to address details of the accident but affirmed he is unlikely to return to full-time pro golf.
“As far as playing at the tour level, I don’t know when that’s going to happen,” Woods said. “I’ll play a round here and there.”
During the 38-minute news conference (watch it below) at the Hero World Challenge, a PGA Tour stop in the Bahamas, Woods repeatedly emphasized the pain and difficulty of his recovery. Even once he started chipping and putting in the back yard, he asked workers at his house to fill the hole with sand so he wouldn’t have to bend over as far to retrieve the ball. The comments from Woods built on an interview released Monday by Golf Digest, in which he declared he would never return to full-time pro golf.

An official statement posted to Tiger Woods’ Twitter account on Tuesday evening said the golfer suffered “comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula” in a car accident earlier in the day.
A comminuted bone is broken into more than two pieces. An open fracture, also called a compound fracture, is a fracture in which there is an open wound or break in the skin near the site of the broken bone.
The statement said the golf legend “underwent a long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle.”
Woods is “awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room,” according to the post.
Anish Mahajan, the chief medical officer and interim CEO at Harbor-ucla Medical Center where Woods was admitted said a rod, pins and screws were used to stabilize his injuries.

Tiger, the new HBO documentary about golfing legend Tiger Woods's life, gives us an inside look into the often enigmatic athlete's personality, childhood, and career. Jaw-dropping in its depictions of Woods's relationship with his father, the backlash after his cheating scandal, his chronic pain and resulting opioid addiction, and his struggles with fame and pressure, the documentary is making waves within the sports community and beyond. As a living legend known by many as the greatest golfer of all time (just second to Jack Nicklaus in major championships), it is fascinating to finally get the chance to know the human behind the mythology. That being said, if you're wondering whether Woods participated in or approved the documentary, he definitely did not. In fact, in all probability, he does not approve or support it.

Benedict reached a deal with Montgomery to set up a joint venture at Whe, with “Tiger Woods” as the first project that Benedict and Wheelhouse will take to market. Tiger Woods’ impressive comeback victory on Sunday at the Masters golf tournament was surely a gift for CBS Sports.
Despite his lack of major wins in recent years, Woods’ remains the biggest draw in golf when it comes to TV ratings. CBS Sports chief Sean McManus said the combination of his underdog status and the closeness of the match right up until the last hole should translate to Nielsen gold for the Eye when the overnights roll in on Monday.

The Commander-in-Tweet was spending time this weekend at his Trump National Golf Course in Jupiter, Florida, but his threesome companions on the links weren’t your run-of-the-mill coworkers or beer buddies. Instead, golfing legends Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus joined Trump for a good walk spoiled.
Fortunately, since Trump is not a drinker, we know he won’t linger at the 19th hole. So expect more tweets later today to catch up on his activities.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts threw a little shade at the President Trump on Wednesday afternoon, criticizing the politicization of the federal judiciary. “We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” the George W. Bush appointee said in a statement to the Associated Press. “What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. The independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.”

It appears prodigiously talented and hugely compensated professional basketball player Chris Paul, traded last year from the L.A. Clippers to the Houston Rockets in exchange for seven — that’s right, seven — players, has come down with a raging case of The Real Estate Fickle. Just six months after he shelled out $6.362 million for an extravagant mansion in an exclusive, guard-gated golf course enclave on the exurban northern outskirts of Houston, Texas, he’s flipped it back on the market at $6.975 million. Built on speculation in 2014 on more than 1.5 landscaped acres that backs up to a manicured fairway of the Jack Nicklaus designed golf course that weaves and winds through the ritzy Carlton Woods enclave in The Woodlands, a master planned community of nearly 60,000 people about 40 miles north of downtown Houston, the semi-Tuscan Spanish/Mediterranean residential behemoth has a total of nine bedrooms and ten full and four half bathrooms...
