Instead of jumping on the tour bus and heading to his band Midland’s headlining gig at the Dreamy Draw music festival, Mark Wystrach hopped into his vehicle and took the scenic route from his home in Tucson, Arizona, to the event site two hours away in Scottsdale.
“I drove up this back road — the original old highway — through the beautiful Sonoran desert,” Wystrach tells Rolling Stone backstage. “Growing up around a bunch of remarkable music here and at my parents’ [restaurant] the Steak Out in Sonoita — there were always incredible bands playing.

Summer is heating up thanks to Grammy-nominated country band Midland and Bud Light’s Easy to Summer jam. On Tuesday, August 15, Midland plays Oklahoma City as part of the Bud Light Backyard Tour.
The band promises nonstop fun for those who can attend. “Bud Light has invited us to be part of such a unique and intimate experience for the fans,” Mark Wystrach told Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
“But yeah, I think these kind of these outside of the box events are something that definitely we really look forward to,” he added. “And, you know, the idea is always to give the fans the best experience possible. We feel like we have the greatest fans in the world. So for them to have an opportunity to see us, someplace like in a backyard setting in the summertime, cold beer. Producer Dave Cobb on Helping Jessica Chastain Nail the Voice as Well as ‘Eyes’ of Tammy Faye Bakker
High-profile music producer Dave Cobb is currently up for several Grammys for his working with two longtime clients who have a couple of the biggest and best voices in the business: Brandi Carlile and Chris Stapleton. For a recent film project, he was tasked with replicating the vintage ’70s/’80s song catalog of another belter, albeit a somewhat less celebrated one: the late televangelist-diva Tammy Faye Bakker.
As might be expected, after having worked on “Eyes of Tammy Faye” — the film that debuted in theaters in November and just made its bow to a wider audience on HBO Max — Cobb has nothing but the highest praise for Jessica Chastain, who thoroughly inhabited Bakker as a vocal stylist for more than a half-dozen musical performances. But you won’t find him offering Bakker herself much less effusive praise than he would a Carlile or Stapleton. And the potential for campiness didn...

After Douglas Sirk but before reality TV, there was bird-voiced televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, the bighearted, spotlight-seeking American success story laid low by her misplaced love for a crooked husband, blind trust in schemers, and old-fashioned greed. Had Jim Bakker not come along to hustle their young marriage into a cash cow of a ministry, one could see the cheery, hard-working, socially liberal Tammy Faye leading a perfectly flush life entertaining the adoring faithful, leaving only her cosmetic boldness as a source of tabloid derision. (Or was it a facial armor that could only arise from being married to Bakker?)
Yet scandal did come for Tammy Faye, after which queer art swooped to rescue her with the 2000 documentary “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” from Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. A sympathetic case of gay adoption that teased as only family could, it also stressed where redemption and pity was warranted for so melodramatic a life.

The first trailer for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” has arrived, and no, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. That’s really Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield, looking entirely transformed into Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker, respectively.
The biopic, inspired by the documentary of the same name, will tell the story of the infamous couple that hosted the television program “The Ptl Club” and developed Heritage USA, a now-defunct Christian theme park in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Jim Bakker later was indicted, convicted and imprisoned on numerous counts of fraud and conspiracy. The couple divorced, and Tammy Faye married Roe Messner. She was then diagnosed with colon cancer in 1996 and died of the disease in 2007.
The trailer starts like any good story does — at the beginning. Here, Chastain still looks like herself, albeit with jet black hair. She arrives at her mother’s door to introduce her new husband, Jim Bakker,...

"God does not want us to be poor!" Searchlight Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a new film from filmmaker Michael Showalter and Jessica Chastain – who also produced this. The movie depicts the history of the televangelists Tammy Faye Bakker and Jim Bakker. During her career Tammy was noted for her eccentric and glamorous persona, as well as for moral views that diverged from those of many mainstream Evangelists, particularly her acceptance of LGBT views and reaching out to HIV/AIDS patients at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Jessica Chastain stars as Tammy, with a cast including Chandler Head as Young Tammy, Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker, Vincent D'Onofrio as Jerry Falwell, Cherry Jones, Fredric Lehne, Mark Wystrach, Sam Jaeger, Gabriel Olds, and Jay Huguley. It looks like something much more profound than just a story of two Jesus-loving televangelists, and I'm...

Searchlight Pictures has updated its 2021 release calendar, dating Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” for December 3. The date puts del Toro’s latest in the thick of the 2021-2022 awards season. Searchlight appears to be following the same release plan it gave del Toro’s last movie, “The Shape of Water,” which started its U.S. theatrical rollout on the first weekend of December. “The Shape of Water” debuted at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Golden Lion, and it seems likely “Nightmare Alley” will show up on the fall film festival circuit.
Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” is adapted by the filmmaker, and film critic Kim Morgan, from the 1946 William Lindsay Gresham novel of the same name. The ensemble cast includes Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Rooney Mara, and David Strathairn. Searchlight Pictures, ever the believer in theatrical, has dated four releases for 2021.
Their Sundance horror pickup The Night House will turn its lights on July 16. The David Bruckner directed titles which Searchlight shelled out a reported $12M for last January follows a widow (Rebecca Hall) who begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s disturbing secrets.
Their Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker televangelist biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye will debut on Sept. 24. The pic, directed by Michael Showalter and written by Abe Sylvia, takes an intimate look at the rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and ’80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire.

Along with seven hours of big cat intrigue, alleged murder, accidental shootings, and unsolved arson, Netflix’s docuseries Tiger King has gifted us with some outrageously cheesy country songs, all sung (or at least performed) by zookeeping country wannabe Joe Exotic. “Here Kitty Kitty” is a swampy murder ballad and “My First Love” is a heartfelt same-sex love song. But it’s “I Saw a Tiger” that has wormed its way into our hearts — and into the hearts and minds of country artists too.

When Midland announced that they would be playing a one-off show at the Palomino in October 2019, the North Hollywood venue hadn’t been operational for nearly 25 years. Though the original structure is still standing, the former country-music hot spot on Lankershim Boulevard now serves as a rentable banquet space for birthday parties and quinceañeras.

Vincent D'Onofrio will play famed evangelist Jerry Falwell in Fox Searchlight's The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which also stars Jessica Chastain.
Fox Searchlight’s new film about the rise, fall, and resurgence of one of the most infamous televangelists continues to take strong shape with its cast. Previously Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield had already joined the congregation, but now Vincent D’Onofrio is also entering the film’s pews. He might even be leading them in a prayer or two.
D’Onfrio has been cast as Jerry Falwell, the Southern Baptist pastor who founded Liberty University and turned evangelism into big business during the 20th century. D’Onofrio is likely best known still for his haunting work in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, but his commanding performance as Wilson Fisk on Daredevil strangely makes his casting in The Eyes of Tammy Faye seem perfect. The members of Midland aren’t ones to hold their tongues, and now they have a new platform to let it rip. On Wednesday, the country trio of Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson premiered the first episode of their country music podcast Set It Straight on Spotify.
Set It Straight seeks to answer some of country’s burning questions, kicking off with a deep dive into the circumstances surrounding the theft of cosmic-country pioneer Gram Parsons’ body. The episode includes an interview with Phil Kaufman, Parsons’ road manager...

Midland sang one for the music-making ramblers on Tuesday’s episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers, where they performed “Playboys.” The song originally appears on the country trio’s 2019 album Let It Roll.
With their uniquely flamboyant sense of style, Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy (who skips his shirt buttons entirely for this appearance) and Jess Carson put a little bit of outlaw bounce into “Playboys,” which they wrote with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. And the seemingly untethered, road-romanticizing life of the outlaw country greats is something to be...

Jess carson, Cameron Duddy, and Mark Wystrach, a.k.a. Midland, are arguing about L.A. traffic. “You should take La Brea over to Sunset,” Duddy, the band’s bassist, says from the back seat of a fire-engine-red Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.
“No, not La Brea,” says lead singer Wystrach, who’s driving. “We want La Cienega — or, no, Crescent Heights.”
All three guys currently call Austin home, but they used to live in L.A. So the drive up into the Hollywood Hills is also a trip down memory lane...

“Anyone have a Triple A card?” asks Midland’s Mark Wystrach, climbing into the middle row of a Pepto-Bismol-colored vintage Cadillac limo that’s currently parked outside of a hip East Nashville bed and breakfast called, appropriately, Urban Cowboy. Though it looks impossibly cool, the interior of this thing is more aging New York taxicab than luxury vehicle — the circulation is minimal, the seats shellac themselves to thighs like athletic tape, and it may or may not emit borderline lethal amounts of exhaust. And it’s hot. So hot. The tiny,...

Country trio Midland sparked a lot of unnecessarily heated debates back when they first arrived back in 2017. Their throwback aesthetic and sound — a playful, scuffed-up nod to the oft-derided Urban Cowboy era in country and its characteristic softness — drew suspicion from anyone who shaped their idea of masculinity around Waylon or Willie. Then there was the fact that singer Mark Wystrach’s résumé included acting and underwear modeling, while bassist Cameron Duddy had pop superstar connections as the video director for Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Uptown Funk.

Midland performed their current single “Mr. Lonely” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday night, owning the late-night stage with a mix of sartorial flash, choreographed dance moves, and impromptu hat tosses.
From afar, it looked as if the trio couldn’t agree on what to wear, as guitarist Jess Carson and bassist Cameron Duddy both sported suits and cowboy hats, while lead singer Mark Wystrach decided sleeves were apparently too cumbersome for late-night and opted for a tank top. It’s the members’ unique personalities, however, along with their zero-fucks approach,...

Midland tapped into the dreamy vibe of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” with their atmospheric new song “Put the Hurt on Me.” The country trio follows Isaak’s lead with the music video too, setting the tune to a stark black–and-white video (though theirs doesn’t feature Helena Christensen on a beach).
Singer Mark Wystrach and guitarist Jess Carson gather around a single microphone, as bass player Cameron Duddy harmonizes from afar. Lead guitarist Luke Cutchen, picking out the riff while seated on his amp, and drummer Robbie Crowell,...

Country trio Midland unplug for a live acoustic rendition of their current single “Mr. Lonely” that was recorded for Vevo during Cma Fest in early June. The original version of the track will appear on the group’s upcoming second album, Let It Roll.
Mark Wystrach, Jess Carson, and Cameron Duddy are all seated closely in a row, acoustic versions of their respective instruments in hand. Duddy even taps out a percussive rhythm on his bass while Carson leads the tune off with its walking blues riff. “Long live the blues,...

Filmed in the heart of downtown Nashville, the episode premieres on Cmt on Friday, June 28th, at 10:00 p.m. Et.
This new version of the song, which Midland sang on the 2019 collaborative Brooks & Dunn album Reboot, leaves much unchanged from the original recording — save for a few extra voices in the mix. Midland leader Mark Wystrach, dressed...

Midland show off a different side of themselves in the atmospheric new song “Put the Hurt on Me,” the latest offering from their upcoming second album Let It Roll. Co-produced by Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne and Dann Huff, Let It Roll will be released August 23rd.
Midland’s members Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson wrote “Put the Hurt on Me” with producers McAnally and Osborne and this time they make some sonic changes, though it still bears many of the group’s playfully retro hallmarks.

The 2019 Cmt Music Awards delivered the usual freewheeling mix of surprising musical collaborations, timely jokes and rowdy behavior. Triumphant pairings included Tanya Tucker and Brandi Carlile; Brett Young and Boyz II Men; and Maren Morris with Sheryl Crow. Luke Combs enjoyed his status as the hottest star of the moment, while Zac Brown sent an unsubtle message to his band’s haters. And mullets, surprisingly and somewhat perplexingly, reigned supreme. Here’s the 10 best, worst and most Wtf moments of Cmt’s annual fan-voted awards show.

Midland held court at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Sunday night, delivering a headlining set full of hits like “Drinkin’ Problem” and “Burn Out,” new songs off their upcoming second album and a slew of bar-band covers. That the gig also fell on Cinco de Mayo only made it that much more of a party. Here are five reasons you should have been there.
1. Midland’s New Material
If the new songs that Midland debuted on Sunday night are any indication, the trio is doubling down on making Eagles country-rock cool again.

Midland chronicle the misadventures of “Mr. Lonely,” played to the comedic hilt by Dennis Quaid, in their riotous new video. The track is the first single from the trio’s upcoming album.
Embracing the titular character’s greasy charm and penchant for philandering, Quaid leaves one stranger’s bed in search of the next. He saunters into a bar — Midland members Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson are there setting up their gear as “Drinkin’ Problem” pours from the jukebox — with the collar popped on his denim jacket, scanning the room.

Brooks & Dunn and Midland brought their collaboration for B&D’s new album Reboot to life when they teamed up to perform “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night.
Midland singer Mark Wystrach set the scene with the song’s famous opening lyric — “Out in the country, past the city limits sign” — before Ronnie Dunn and his honeyed voice joined in. His partner of nearly 30 years Kix Brooks laid down some rootsy harmonica, while Midland’s Jess Carson and Cameron Daddy chimed in on background vocals.

Two and a half years after their debut LP On the Rocks introduced the world to Midland’s infinitely fun, boot-stompin’ Eighties-country-in-an-Instagram-filter sound, their new single finds the trio not planning to leave the honky-tonk anytime soon. “Mr. Lonely” is a mischievous, Texas dance hall-inspired tune in the spirit of Eddie Rabbitt written by the band (singer Mark Wystrach, guitarist Jess Carson and bassist Cameron Duddy) alongside Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne.

Since releasing their debut album On the Rocks in 2017, Midland have made their home on the road, supporting the LP on tours with Little Big Town and Thomas Rhett and with their own headlining sets. The latter gigs are typically raucous affairs, with the band playing the majority of On the Rocks and firing off a string of on-the-nose cover songs — like Jerry Reed’s Smokey and the Bandit trucker anthem “East Bound and Down,” which Midland performed Wednesday night on the 52nd annual Cma Awards.

With their outsized stoned-cowboy vibe and colorful aesthetic, Midland don’t often blend into a crowd, especially on the concert stage. But the trio toned it down for an understated performance of their latest single “Burn Out” on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday night, favoring subtle harmonies over honky-tonk rowdiness.

Winners of the 2018 Grammys were announced January 28 on CBS at Madison Square Garden, and country fans nationwide were excited to see Chris Stapleton steamroll over the competition to pick up three awards in the country field.
