The Arsenal coach’s genial cooperation with this documentary still leaves what went into his success something of a mystery
Here is the latest in the always-interesting series of documentaries from pitchside-reporting maestro Gabriel Clarke, following excellent profiles of Bobby Robson and Jack Charlton: the subject is Arsenal’s long-serving manager whose initial burst of success was soured by years of fan rancour before he decided to step down in 2018 after 22 years in the job. Completing this loose trilogy about outstanding managerial careers, this time Clarke shares directing duties with French TV commentator Christian Jeanpierre – but while Wenger proves a genial and sage-like interviewee, it’s fair to say that he still remains almost as much a mystery as before.
Wenger isn’t a sphinx, exactly: he has plenty to say and says it with considerable emotional articulacy. But the material essentially engages with his player management, stressing what he doesn’t do,...

Exclusive: A feature doc on one of Formula 1’s most dramatic moments, the row between Ferrari drivers Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi, is the first project to emerge from Finding Jack Charlton producer Noah Media and Sky Studios’ multi-year partnership, with F1 driver Mark Webber set to exec produce.
Villeneuve & Pironi will focus on an intense two-week period in the early 1980s that became known as ‘The Betrayal.’ The film will feature interviews with those closest to the two men, with premiere date set for late next year.
The teammates were both aiming to win the 1982 F1 World Title but, during the final laps of that year’s San Marino Grand Prix, Pironi passed Villeneuve to win the race while Villeneuve believed the two had been instructed to slow down. This was an unexpected act that went completely against the team orders Villeneuve thought they were obeying and they never spoke again.

Features: James Anderson, Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Steven Finn, Andy Flower, Monty Panesar, Kevin Pietersen | Written by Gabriel Clarke, Barney Douglas | Directed by Barney Douglas
The Edge, directed by Barney Douglas, follows the England Cricket team between the infamous years of success from 2009 to 2013. Beginning in late 2008 with England on a destructive path of self-annihilation during their world tour, following the teams slow rebuild with refreshed ideas resulting in a newfound success on a world stage, touching on the inevitable downfall and mental fatigue that comes with the global unification of serial winning.
First and foremost, The Edge is not merely a simplistic film about the sport of cricket. It is not a one-note love letter of which its main focus is to preach to the already convinced choir of fans. It is far from it. It is a film that works wonderfully on two levels.

While the cinema at present is filled with Infinity Wars, solo Solos and soon the resurrection of those pesky dinosaurs, there are some small gems to be found as well and for football fans, and indeed sports fans, this week sees the release of Bobby Robson: More Than A Manager, the story of the late great football manager who took England to the World Cup semi’s in 1990 and took charge of Barcelona, Psv and his home, Newcastle United.
The new documentary, co-directed by renowned sports reporter Gabriel Clarke, takes an in-depth look at Robson’s career through the years and his subsequent health battles with cancer. Clarke says that the story itself was enough to make the film, saying:
“It’s just a fantastic story. There’s a reasonable amount of distance since Bobby died and the cancer foundation is an incredible story in its own right but...

Sir Bobby Robson remains a legendary figure on and off the pitch. He was beloved by many, but dogged by health problems and perplexing decisions throughout his managerial career. In a glowing tribute to the revered manager, directors Gabriel Clarke and Torquil Jones have loving pieced together the highs and lows of Robson’s career for an in-depth, heartfelt and joyous documentary.
It doesn’t vie far from the familiar structure, jumping back and forth along the timeline of Robson’s career. From player to manager one message is unmistakable across the board; Robson was a man who loved Football, and it was his life. Sometimes his own family suffered for it, but the empathy shown from a man who tragically battled cancer five times in a fifteen year period, for those who played for him or worked alongside him, always gained admiration and a diehard loyalty.

For 100 points, what is the thread connecting the world’s oldest sports car race and Hollywood’s brightest star in the ‘60s and ‘70s? Other than possessing a near-mythical stature in their respective fields, Le Mans (1971) is Steve McQueen’s passion project, one that aims to become the definitive cinematic portrayal of racing and elevate the actor’s clout. Neither happened – the film cursed all those involved and altered the “King of Cool” forever. Documakers Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna have chosen that as the subject, and their final product absolutely deserves a spin.
If, for some reason definitely of the odd kind, the content of The Man & Le Mans isn’t captivating enough, know that Clarke and McKenna are interspersing previously unseen footage and sound bites with interviews with surviving crew members. McQueen’s son Chad, the female lead Louise Edlind, writer/confidant Alan Trustman, driver/racer David Piper,...

Coming off the success of Bullitt, Steve McQueen turned his sights to Le Mans, an auto racing drama that, after a complicated production, ended up flopping upon release. Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna's "Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans," which premiered at Cannes Classics and went on to San Sebastian, Deauville and will screen at the upcoming BFI London Film Festival, starts following the king of cool in 1970 when he was fresh off hits "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "Bullitt." McQueen wanted to make on a film about France's 24-hour Formula One race Le Mans. During the six months he worked on the film, his director John Sturges quit, his marriage disintegrated, his Solar Productions neared bankruptcy and he was rumored to be on Charles Manson's kill list. Virtually dialogue-free and cinema verite, "Le Mans" ultimately went to director Lee H. Katzin and flopped at the 1971 box office. Chad McQueen helped to produce the doc about his father's experience, which includes plenty of interviews as well as newly discovered archival footage and McQueen's private audio recordings.

A documentary of obsession, betrayal and vindication, "Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans" is definitely something fans of the legendary actor will appreciate. "Le Mans," a film about the 24-hour race in France, was not a commercial success. However, it did achieve a cult following and with "The Man & Le Mans," we'll hopefully see why. The film is directed by Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna,...

While we all know the big titles vying in the Competition slots at Cannes, the festival also does a great job each year of honoring cinema's past, both by screening restored films and highlighting new projects about legendary figures. And this year, some light will be shining on Steve McQueen, with a documentary about the notorious making of his 1971 film "Le Mans." And a couple of clips have arrived for those who can't make it to the Croisette. Directed by Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna, the duo explore a movie that was sort of the "Mad Max: Fury Road" of its day. "Le Mans" featured little in the way of dialogue or plot, but was heavy on driving, as you might expect from a racing movie. However, this was before CGI, and everything was shot on location with actual vehicles during the real race. This meant no shortage of danger,...

Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna's "Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans," premiering in the Cannes Classics section, follows the king of cool's journey to make a film in the 1970s about France's 25-hour race, "Le Mans." During the six months he worked on the film, his director John Sturges quit, his marriage disintegrated, his Solar Productions neared bankruptcy and he was rumored to be on Charles Manson's kill list. "Le Mans" ultimately went to director Lee H. Katzin and flopped at the 1971 box office. Content Media will be selling the documentary in the Cannes Market, and according to Variety it's “an extraordinary, moving, white-knuckle drive with one of the greatest movie stars of all time, and the film that almost destroyed him.” McQueen's son Chad McQueen will be in Cannes to present "The Man & Le Mans" alongside the filmmakers. It should come as no surprise that Cannes Film Festival will play host to Kent Jones’s doc on the touchstone of filmmaking interview tomes, Hitchcock/Truffaut (see photo above). The film has been floating near the top of this list since it was announced last year as in development, while Jones himself has a history with the festival, having co-written both Arnaud Desplechin’s Jimmy P. and Martin Scorsese’s My Voyage To Italy, both of which premiered in Cannes. The film is scheduled to screen as part of the Cannes Classics sidebar alongside the likes of Stig Björkman’s Ingrid Bergman, in Her Own Words, which will play as part of the festival’s tribute to the late starlet, and Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna’s Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans (see trailer below). Manchester United manager David Moyes is exercising caution over the future of Wayne Rooney and will take things “step by step”, according to the BBC.
The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to rivals Chelsea for much of the summer with United rejecting the Blue’s overtures during the recent transfer window.
However, questions over the striker’s future persist with rumours suggesting Jose Mourinho’s side are lining up another bid in January.
Rooney also reacted angrily to ITV reporter Gabriel Clarke’s question as to whether or not he remained happy at Old Trafford following Tuesday’s Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen.
The former Everton star refused to directly answer the question and manager Moyes has been equally coy on the matter.
Rooney’s current contract is set to expire in 2015 and asked if there was any possibility of an extension, the United...

ITV has issued a statement after it cut off an interview with football manager Jose Mourinho following Real Madrid's Champions League exit last night.
The former Chelsea manager appeared to hint at a return to West London in the exchange, saying that he may not be in Spain next year and would "love to be where people love me".
Before the coach could continue, the interviewer interrupted to say "We'll take that as England, I've gotta go" and cut to an ad break.
"Our reporter Gabriel Clarke managed to land an unexpected interview with Jose Mourinho with only two minutes left before the end of last night's Champions League programme on ITV," the broadcaster's statement explained.
"At that stage it was too late to arrange an overrun of the broadcast beyond the allotted time. However, in a very tight, live situation, we showed as much as we possibly could of their exchange to viewers.
