“Abbott Elementary” just might do it. After winning for casting, the ABC hit freshman sitcom could make history in many significant ways. After Quinta Brunson made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for comedy series, acting and writing categories in the same year, she would be only the second Black person ever to win as a producer in the comedy series. The first was Winifred Hervey for “The Golden Girls” back in 1987. Also, forecast to go along with the top category a win for writing (Brunson would be the third Black person after Larry Wilmore for “The Bernie Mac Show” in 2002 and Lena Waithe for “Master of None” in 2017) and Sheryl Lee Ralph in supporting actress (she would be the second Black woman to win the category after Jackee Harry for “227” in 1987).

A TV series based on David Ayer’s “End of Watch” is in the works at Fox.
Ayer, who wrote and directed the 2012 film, is co-writing the TV series with “Them” showrunner David Matthews. The project has a script-to-series commitment.

Ayer, Chris Long and Darryll C. Scott executive produce via Cedar Park Studios. Also executive producing are Matthews, John Lesher, who produced the movie alongside Ayer, James Masciello (Raven), Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi. Bill Rotko is a consulting producer.

You can add "Hell or High Water" to the list of film IPs that are being re-imagined for the small screen. Fox is developing a series adaptation of the 2016 neo-western thriller, with "Stranger Things" and "Dopesick" alum Jessica Mecklenburg writing and executive producing. David Mackenzie, who directed the original movie, will further executive produce the show along with Sidney Kimmel, John Penotti, Gigi Pritzker, Rachel Shane, Julia Yorn, and Carla Hacken (all of whom also produced Mackenzie's film).

Fox is developing a television version of Taylor Sheridan-penned feature film Hell or High Water.
The network is working on the small-screen take with Dopesick and Stranger Things co-exec producer Jessica Mecklenburg.
The series comes from Sk Global, which produced the original film, and Fox Entertainment.
The film, which was directed by David Mackenzie and distributed by Lionsgate and CBS Films, follows two brothers, played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster, who carry out a series of bank robberies to save their family ranch and are pursued by two Texas rangers, played by Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham.
The series, which is inspired by the film, follows a ruthless oil tycoon, who attempts to plunder a West Texas ranching community, and two local brothers, who dodge a zealous Texas Ranger and fight to keep what’s theirs, one bank robbery at a time.

Alex Kurtzman, the top producer on CBS Studios’ roster and architect of the studio’s Star Trek universe, has closed a massive new nine-figure overall deal there for his Secret Hideout banner. No financial terms are being disclosed but I hear the pact is in the $150 million range, putting Kurtzman in the very top tier of television writer-producers.
The agreement will keep Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout at CBS Studios through 2026, giving the studio exclusive rights to the company’s projects for all platforms, including a series adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates.” Additionally, Kurtzman will remain at the helm of the growing Star Trek franchise for the next six years. Heather Kadin will continue to lead the Secret Hideout content team, along with SVP Aaron Baiers and director of development Robyn Johnson. Under the new deal, Secret Hideout will expand its ranks with additional executive hires.

Exclusive: Amazon is developing a drama series based on The Last Mrs. Parrish, Liv Constantine’s bestselling debut novel, with Cathy Schulman’s Welle Entertainment and Jeff Gaspin’s Gaspin Media producing. Jessica Mecklenburg will pen the adaptation and executive produce.
The twisty thriller, pitched as The Hand That Rocks the Cradle meets Single White Female, sees a plain young woman striving to insert herself into high society life by usurping the Queen Bee’s fairytale life only to realize she may have gotten herself in way over her head.
The collaboration stems from Schulman and Gaspin’s work together while Gaspin was president of Primary Wave Entertainment, which backs Welle.
Shulman’s Welle Entertainment optioned rights to the book, published worldwide by HarperCollins in October 2017. It hit bestseller lists in multiple international territories and in the U.S.

Winners of the 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards were revealed on Feb. 11 in ceremonies held simultaneously in Los Angeles and New York. As only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are eligible for consideration, these kudos, which are celebrating their 70th anniversary, have not been the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
Indeed, one of this year’s leading contenders for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars — Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — was ruled out of the running by the guild. However, that WGA race does include four of the other Academy Awards nominees — “The Big Sick,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird” and “The Shape of Water.” It is rounded out by “I, Tonya.” Jordan Peele won for “Get Out” edging out Greta Gerwig, who had been predicted to win for “Lady Bird.”

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
On the television side, the leading nominees are “Better Call Saul,” which competes for best drama series writing as well as for two individual episodes and “The Americans,” which is up for both overall drama series writing and an individual episode. Over in comedy, reigning Emmy...

It’s “Breaking Bad,” Emmy-winning actor/producer Bryan Cranston told IndieWire, that changed his life in many ways — especially the fact that “it’s given me opportunities to have more control of my destiny, [be] financially secure, so I don’t need to ever make a decision based on financial need.”
And that means when he chooses to appear in a project, such as the Amazon Prime series “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams,” it’s because he believes in it. “I can pick and choose what I want to do, where I want to go, what stories I want to tell, whether that’s on stage, or on a film, in a series. Whether I’m producing, or acting, or directing, or writing, I’m free to be able to look at all aspects of it.”

One to please Pkd purists, the latest Electric Dreams episode is this series’ most faithful to its source material yet. Names have been changed, 1950s gender politics have been updated and saucy scenes added, but writer Jessica Mecklenburg tells the original story of a dwindling marriage rejuvenated by an unexpected source.
I say unexpected, a Metamorph from the planet Rexor IV is exactly the sort of thing you’d expect to find in sci-fi. It’s as archetypal as the question posed by this episode, one that, thanks to writers like Philip K. Dick, now feels indivisible...

“They used to make razors here”, laments Bryan Cranston, between takes on the set of Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. He’s in one of the cavernous corridors of London’s Gillette Building, which has recently been converted into a film studio. It’s a rather fitting locale for the show, which is revisiting ten sci-fi short stories from the 1950s and finding their modern day relevance. The author of these stories was Philip K. Dick, who also provided the inspiration for Blade Runner and Minority Report.

Channel 4 and Amazon are bringing us a Phillip K Dick anthology series that's worth getting excited about...
Philip K. Dick’s writing has been translated to the screen numerous times, with most of the results being brilliant in their own ways: Blade Runner remains one of the best-loved sci-fi films of all time; Minority Report stands out as one of the best Tom Cruise movies; Total Recall, the first one, has cult classic status; and The Man In The High Castle has really captured imaginations over the last couple of years.

Now, Amazon and Channel 4 are teaming up to offer fans an unprecedented number of Dick-adapted stories all at once. Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams is an anthology series, arriving this autumn, which gives short stories from the iconic author a Black Mirror sort of treatment.
