In 2012, Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington teamed up for a commercially successful action/thriller in the form of "Safe House." While the film was met with mixed reviews from critics in its day, it was a sizable financial hit, taking in $208 million at the global box office, including more than $126 million domestically. The film has also remained a staple on cable TV and streaming in the years since its release. Perhaps not surprisingly, Universal Pictures was, at one point, developing a sequel.
The follow-up was originally announced in late 2012 shortly after the film's successful theatrical run. At the time, it was reported that writer David Guggenheim would return to pen the screenplay. Now, here we are more than a decade later and next to nothing has been said officially regarding "Safe House 2." So, is the movie still happening? Would Washington or Reynolds return? We're here to break down everything we know.

Michael J. Fox had to look back to the future to decide on his own retirement.
The “Back to the Future” icon explained to Empire magazine (via Screen Rant) that Quentin Tarantino’s 1960s set “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” inspired him to seriously consider stepping away from acting. Fox detailed that on “The Good Wife” spinoff “The Good Fight,” he had trouble remembering his lines due to his Parkinson’s disease.

Netflix’s “Our Man From Jersey,” starring Halle Berry, Mark Wahlberg and J.K. Simmons, is coming close to wrapping its shoot in Croatia and Slovenia, according to Film New Europe.
The film, based on a screenplay by David Guggenheim and Joe Barton, has been described as a “blue-collar James Bond.” Wahlberg plays a down-to-earth construction worker from Jersey, who is thrust into the world of super spies and secret agents when his high-school ex-girlfriend Roxanne (Berry) recruits him on a high-stakes U.S. intelligence mission.
It is directed by Julian Farino, and produced by the U.S.’s Closest to the Hole Productions, owned by Wahlberg. The producers are Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Jeff Waxman.
The producers have applied for Croatia’s 25 cash rebate under the working title “The Union,” so the Croatian Audiovisual Center could only confirm a project of such a name was filmed in the country during September.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Warning: This podcast contains spoilers about the season one finale of Apple TV+’s Invasion.
“It’s especially hard to launch original things on the big screen,” exclaims multi-hyphenate Simon Kinberg on the latest episode of Crew Call.
“It’s harder to get movies made, and harder to get people to come to the movie theater, unless you catch fire culturally or you’re a bulletproof title that’s too big to fail,” he says.
Still the odds for original fare theatrically hasn’t stopped Kinberg from creating unique ideas again in the wake of his success with writing, producing and even directing on 20th Century Fox/Marvel’s X-Men franchise. Other IP he’s taken to higher levels as a writer or producer are Deadpool, Cinderella and the animated TV series he co-created Star Wars Rebels. Mill Creek Entertainment has released a Blu-ray edition of Universal Pictures’ Safe House from 2012. This spy thriller features a first-rate cast including Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, Ruben Blades and Sam Shepard.
Directed by Sweden’s Daniel Espinoza, the story concerns the capture and escape of a former CIA operative who possesses damning evidence that his superiors are spilling secrets to anyone with a large bank account. The script is by David Guggenheim and may remind viewers of Matt Damon’s Bourne films.
Ryan Reynolds plays Matt Weston, a young CIA agent stuck on housekeeping duty at an empty safe house in Capetown, South Africa. He's restless and eager for a more important post in a less isolated location. The house doesn't see much action, nor does Weston apart from conjugal visits from his gorgeous girlfriend played by Nora Arnezeder.

Halle Berry is set to take on “Our Man from New Jersey,” starring opposite Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming spy movie for Netflix.
Wahlberg will also produce the film, working alongside Stephen Levinson, following last year’s successful launch of “Spenser Confidential” at the streamer. The film’s script comes from screenwriter David Guggenheim, based on an idea from Levinson.
Details of the plot and Berry’s role are being kept under wraps, but the film is described as “a blue collar James Bond.”
The film’s premise sounds like familiar territory for Berry, after she memorably starred as Jinx opposite Pierce Brosnan’s Bond in 2002’s “Die Another Day.”
Since then, Berry has racked up an impressive action movie resume (and body count). After playing Storm in the “X-Men” franchise, Berry most recently starred in “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and just completed filming on Roland Emmerich’s “Moonfall.”

Exclusive: In the first major spec script deal of the new year, Sony Pictures has acquired an untitled action spec by Safe House scribe David Guggenheim. The writer developed it with Simon Kinberg, who’ll produce in a reteam from their work on the series Designated Survivor. I’m hearing the deal is high six figures.
They are keeping the plot line under wraps, but it has a big action concept with franchise potential, a supernatural element, and a big lead role for an actress.
Guggenheim last year sold Our Man From Jersey to Netflix in a seven-figure deal and is writing it as a star vehicle for Mark Wahlberg to play a blue-collar 007 protagonist. Deadline reports that the lattermost project, a “blue-collar 007” that will be scripted by David Guggenheim, will be produced by Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, the duo whose recently-released “Spenser Confidential” was viewed by 85 million Netflix subscribers. The duo has been virtually meeting with writers but other details about the project, including a prospective release date, are under wraps.

Mark Wahlberg is in early negotiations with streaming giant Netflix to produce and star in spy movie “Our Man in New Jersey.”
Should the deal be made, Wahlberg would portray a blue-collar 007 James Bond-type character. “Safe House” writer David Guggenheim is also in talks to develop the script. Stephen Levinson, who came up with the story idea, would produce with Wahlberg.
Wahlberg and Levinson worked with Netflix on the action-comedy “Spenser Confidential,” which began streaming on March 6 with Wahlberg in the title role and producing. Levinson also produced along with Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and director Peter Berg.
Wahlberg’s most recent feature films include “Transformers: The Last Knight,” “Mile 22,” “Daddy’s Home 2” and “Instant Family.” He recently wrapped shooting the independent drama “Good Joe Bell,” directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green with Reid Miller, Connie Britton, Maxwell Jenkins and Gary Sinise also starring. Exclusive: In a seven-figure deal, Netflix has acquired Our Man From Jersey, a star vehicle for Mark Wahlberg that will be scripted by Safe House writer David Guggenheim. Described as a blue collar 007, the film will be produced by Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, who hatched the idea. Deals are being wrapped up now.
All of the participants are in business with Netflix. Wahlberg and Levinson are just coming off Spenser Confidential, inspired by the Robert B. Parker Spenser For Hire novels. That film was seen in part or whole by 85 million, making it the second most watched feature film for Netflix. Wahlberg and Levinson have been using the downtime to take a lot of FaceTime meetings with writers; one of them was with Guggenheim, and it all quickly clicked. They handed in a 36-page outline and the deal resulted from that. Ori Marmur is steering for Netflix.

After Will Smith notched the biggest-grossing film of his career with last summer’s $1 billion hit Aladdin, can he keep the box office heat wave going with Martin Lawrence in reviving their Bad Boys franchise? The third film, Bad Boys for Life, finally arrives over Mlk weekend 13 years after the second movie, with a projected take between $42 million-$45 million over four days.
That range comes with a lot of asterisks. One major tracking firm believes the Sony pic could open to $48M, and note the pic does have the best reviews of the series with 77% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes — even better than Ride Along (18% Rotten) and Ride Along 2 (14%), two Mlk releases to which many keep comparing Bad Boys for Life‘s business prospects. Those two titles opened to $48.6M (second best for the four-day January holiday) and $41M, respectively.
Sony, which usually downplays its projections, is spotting $38M for the $90M production.

First ABC and now Netflix, Kiefer Sutherland's Designated Survivor is done after three seasons.
For the second time, Designated Survivor has been canceled. Netflix confirmed the series will not return for its fourth season. The streamer saved the show after it was canceled by ABC in 2018 following its second season.
The Kiefer Sutherland starrer was notable for its plagued production. The series had five showrunners over two seasons and Sutherland’s co-star, Nathasha McElhorne, left the show during season 2 to pursue another project. After ABC canceled the show, it was months before Netflix decided to pick up a third season, as well as purchase the streaming rights to seasons one and two for the U.S. and Canada.

Netflix will not be picking up new seasons of D.C. drama series Designated Survivor starring Kiefer Sutherland, or freshman adult animated comedy series Tuca & Bertie, headlined by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong.
Netflix rescued Designated Survivor, picking it up for a third season last September after its cancellation by ABC following months of complex dealmaking. At the time, the streaming service and studio eOne made one-year deals with the cast for a third season only. Some of the actors have already moved on — for instance Kal Penn is toplining a new comedy series on NBC — but they were open to doing more Designated Survivor. The three produced seasons will continue to be available on Netflix globally.

In season 3 of Designated Survivor, produced by eOne, President Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) will face a political reality… campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? This season will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and “fake news.” Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.
Tovar is expected to appear in all 10 episodes, playing Isabel, the White House Director of Social Innovation.
She joins two other recently cast major recurring guest stars, Anthony Edwards & Julie White. Production on Season 3 is set to begin later this year for a 2019 premiere.

Sony Pictures is close to greenlighting “Bad Boys For Life,” Variety has learned.
Reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as two of Miami Pd’s most infamous officers has taken years to pull off, but a new draft of a script appears to have met with the producers’ approval and it looks as though production on the sequel could begin in early 2019. The plan is for the third “Bad Boys” to be in theaters by Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in 2020. Smith is on board to reprise his role as Detective Mike Lowrey. Lawrence has yet to come to terms, but the comic continues to circle the project.
Sony declined to comment on specifics related to negotiations or even address the possibility that the cameras will soon be rolling on another installment in the series. However, in an earlier interview the studio did speak to Variety more broadly about its vision for several key franchises.
