Portland, Ore. — An arsonist cut through the fence of the gated back lot of a Portland Police Bureau training facility and began setting fire to cop cars. The destruction — occurring in the early morning of May 2 — was brazen: The assailant set fires that engulfed 17 vehicles, including one that grew into a fireball near a large propane tank, before fire crews arrived to douse the flames.
Even days later — as Ppb cops on motorcycles zipped through turns of training course created by orange cones in the lot — the stench of charred plastic hung in the air.

If you don’t have kids, you may not have heard of “Gabby’s Dollhouse.” If you have a preschooler, it has likely become a welcome upgrade from the “Cocomelon” of your child’s nursery school days.
No intended shade at “Cocomelon,” the other monster hit for Netflix in the kids space. “Cocomelon” is simplistic animation set to familiar nursery rhymes — it’s a low lift both in terms of production and consumption. “Gabby’s,” a combination of (a little) live-action and (a lot of) animation, is a child’s entry point into storytelling and imaginative play. It was for my kids — and millions of others.
For 2023, the top 5 children’s series on streaming ranked like this, per Nielsen:
“Bluey” (43.9 billion minutes streamed on Disney+) “Cocomelon” (36.3 billion minutes streamed on Netflix) “SpongeBob Squarepants” (19.8 billion minutes streamed on Paramount+) “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” (13.9 billion minutes streamed on Disney+) “Gabby’s Dollhouse” (12.8 billion minutes...

From New York to Austin, and Los Angeles to Atlanta, university presidents have summoned campus police, city riot cops, and even state troopers to answer the civil disobedience of students who have set up campus tent encampments to protest the U.S.-backed Israeli military offensive in Gaza.
The behavior of law enforcement has — once again — shined a stark spotlight on police brutality and disregard for First Amendment rights protecting freedom of assembly, speech, and the press. As cops have gone ham on protesters, and engaged in dubious mass-arrests, they...

There wasn't a more popular or influential (or controversial) sitcom in the 1970s than "All in the Family." Created by Norman Lear, the series was a stingingly hilarious satire of American attitudes as the country adjusted to the post-Civil Rights Movement era and coped with the increasingly unpopular Vietnam War.
The genius of "All in the Family" was Lear's ability to make every single one of his main characters behave ridiculously without becoming full-on caricatures. Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) was an unrepentant bigot, his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) was a well-meaning ditz, his daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) was a work-in-progress idealist who went from dopey to fairly sharp as the series progressed, and his son-in-law Michael "Meathead" Stivic represented everything Archie hated about liberals in one preachy package. We all saw a bit of ourselves and the people we have no choice but to call family in the Bunkers, and...

Charles Dierkop, the busy character actor who played tough guys in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and the 1970s Angie Dickinson series Police Woman, has died. He was 87.

The Wisconsin native also appeared alongside Rod Steiger in Sidney Lumet’s The Pawnbroker (1964), played the mobster Salvanti in Roger Corman’s The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967) and was a murderous Santa Claus in the cult horror movie Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984).

The "Twilight Zone" episode "Come Wander With Me" is probably better remembered for its titular song than its strange, ambiguous story. Unlike many other episodes of "The Twilight Zone," where the twist is thoroughly explained, the ending of this one is left up to the viewer's interpretation.
The episode centers on a cocky young singer called Floyd Burney (played by Gary Crosby), who styles himself as "The Rock-a-Billy Kid" and is scouring the backwoods of the U.S. for old folk songs that he can jazz up and call his own. But when he hears a beautiful young woman called Mary Rachel singing a song called "Come Wander With Me," Floyd is so fixated on capturing the tune that he chases it all the way to his grave. Mary Rachel cryptically says that he does so "every time," trying and failing to persuade him to make different choices. It's part ghost story,...

Floyd Mayweather, a former professional boxer who retired in 2017 with an undefeated record, gave his opinions on rapper Sean Combs a.k.a Diddy’s r*pe allegations. Instead of condemning the rapper, Mayweather defended him, saying, “mistakes happen.” These tone-deaf remarks landed Mayweather in trouble as fans were not ready to let this slide.

Marcel wasn't kidding when he said Archer was no choir boy.
When he first arrived at Gaffney, Archer purposely let a patient lose consciousness so that he could claim an emergency need to do a procedure the patient didn't consent to—and that was the least of his ethical lapses.
But on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 4, he berated Zola and Maggie for doing an end-run around an insurance company's denial of service to save a patient's life. Seriously?
His stance would have been reasonable if only he hadn't had the past he had. At the very least, he should have referenced it.
Maybe we're supposed to think that now that he's the head of the Ed, he has a different perspective or that he's grown and changed. But he acted high-and-mighty when he's done far worse, and that weakened any point he might have had.

There’s nothing so freaky about “Freaky Tales,” Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s sci-fi omnibus ode to ‘80s cinema nostalgia that takes the definition of “derivative,” packages a bunch of retro cinematic references smugly into winky “you get it, right?” pastiche, and stretches it to its furthest possible event horizon.
The problem with structuring your film around four interlocking chapters, each with its own segueing title card, is if you’re not down with the first, you’ll be counting down the passage of time groaningly until the next. Last time they were behind the camera, Boden and Fleck had decamped their indie roots, including the lovely “Half Nelson” and “Sugar” — films powered by real characters — for the irresistible Faust’s bargain of directing 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” It seems they have not stripped themselves of the MCU’s cheeky, self-reflexive DNA, here writing and directing a film that thinks...

Freaky Tales officially kicked off the 2024 Sundance Film Festival with Pedro Pascal as a soon-to-be-retired fixer and Jay Ellis as NBA All-Star and former Golden State Warrior Sleepy Floyd.
The Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-directed film received the prime 7 p.m. slot at the Eccles Theater, with the audience giving it a warm welcome. The filmmakers, whose recent credits include Captain Marvel and Masters of the Air, were welcomed back to the festival, where their feature debut Half Nelson screened in 2006 and Mississippi Grind screened in 2015.
“The last time I was here with Mississippi Grind I had to lie to get on an airplane about how pregnant I was. I was so pregnant, and I had to pretend I was less pregnant than I was. And now the person I was pregnant with is here tonight, and she is 8 years old ,” said Boden ahead of the screening to audience applause.

Signature Entertainment has acquired the U.K. and Irish rights to “Unicorns,” the romance drama co-directed by BAFTA nominee Sally El Hosaini (“The Swimmers”) and her long-standing collaborator James Krishna Floyd, who starred in both “The Swimmers” and her directorial debut “My Brother the Devil.”
From a script written by Floyd, “Unicorns” is described as a “visually daring and heartfelt portrayal of modern masculinity” and follows a queer South Asian club performer living a double life who meets a straight, single-father mechanic, with whom unexpected sparks begin to fly. The film stars Ben Hardy (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Love at First Sight”), newcomer Jason Patel, Nisha Nayar (“Buddha of Suburbia”), Hannah Onslow (“Empire of Light”) and Sagar Radia (“Industry”).
“We are thrilled to have Signature bring ‘Unicorns’ to U.K. and Irish cinemas where we know audiences will enjoy our unique, timely, but above all entertaining film,” said El-Hosaini and Floyd.

The Andy Griffith Show had to make due without one of their most popular actors in the late Don Knotts. They’d end up trying to replace the Barney Fife role with another actor. One of the they briefly talked about felt it would’ve been a bad idea. And they were right.

Welcome to our review of this year’s Ring of Honor Final Battle pay-per-view, the latest Roh PPV under the auspices of Tony Khan’s ownership, which – despite not having a TV deal – has turned a tide this past year. So with that said, let’s see what went down…
Roh: Zero Hour Match #1: Taya Valkyrie def. Jazmin Allure The following is courtesy of ringofhonor.com:
Taya booted Jazmin and then tossed her across the ring with a straight onslaught. Allure fired back with a forearm. Taya placed Allure on the ropes and hit her with a sliding German Suplex. Taya’s years of experience were too much for Jazmin to handle. Taya superplexed Allure and then stomped Allure’s face, grabbing the pin in the process!

Quentin Tarantino rejected The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and many other rock stars
In the 2022 book Cinema Speculation, Tarantino discussed learning about music history from his friend Floyd. “I was all ears about this firsthand rock ‘n’ roll history, because I wasn’t into ’70s white-boy rock,” he said. “I didn’t give a f*** about Kiss, I didn’t give a f*** about Aerosmith, I didn’t give a f*** about Alice Cooper or Black Sabbath or Jethro Tull. I didn’t own Frampton Comes Alive! I openly rejected that entire culture.
“At 16, I think I heard of Bruce Springsteen, but I’d never heard Bruce Springsteen,” he added.

Federal Correctional Institution (Fci) Tucson inmate John Turscak was charged with allegedly stabbing former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin 22 times on November 24.
Turscak is now being charged with attempted murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and intent to murder. The United States Attorney’s Office in Tucson, Arizona, is handling the prosecution.
Chauvin was one of the police officers involved in the murder of George Floyd. Although he was not initially named in the complaint, a law enforcement source confirmed his identity. In the complaint, Chauvin is referred to as “D.C.”
Turscak allegedly crafted a knife to stab Chauvin with. The 52-year-old approached the police officer in the law library and then proceeded to stab him.
Chauvin said he would have been dead if the police officers had not responded as quickly as they did.
After he waived his Miranda rights, Turscak’s story changed.

In “Trolls Band Together,” director Walt Dohrn says that one of the most important aspects of making sure the film works is determining where and when specific songs should be used. He says the central thing to keep in mind is where they can help move the story forward in a unique way. He then illustrated this using the song, “Sweet Dreams,” as an example. “How do we do that? We have the lyrics, so what we do is just start blocking them in going, okay, this would be a good place for it rhythmically. We just start slowly building it, putting songs in, just rough songs,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat for our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Even with all the songs that are used, there are still instances of ones that Dohrn really wanted to use...

Wanna feel old? The Trolls franchise is seven this year and brings with it a whole culture of nostalgia for the late ’90s and early ’00s that to anyone under 40 will seem like a million years ago. The rest of us might remember it as yesterday; a moment in time when boy bands sprang up at the rate of one a week, offering different permutations of The Wild One, The Sensitive One, The Sultry One, The Cute One and, inevitably, The Most Famous One That Left and Threw the Whole Project Into Crisis.
Trolls Band Together takes all this as its central thesis, which is a relief after its two hectic predecessors, the first being an origins story, in which the trolls — the psychedelic lovechildren of gonks and Smurfs — must save themselves from being eaten by buck-toothed creatures called Bergens. The Bergens didn’t feature much in Trolls World Tour,...

The Trolls are back! Long-lost siblings reunite and troll magic faces a new obstacle in “Trolls Band Together.” Dynamic duo Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) embark on a new adventure to get Branch’s brothers’ boy band — Brozone — back together to save Floyd (Troye Sivan) from two wannabe superstar singers who secretly leech off of Floyd’s talent.
John Dory (Eric André) catalyzes the reunion of Brozone, who broke up over creative differences when Branch was a baby. The other two brothers — Clay and Spruce — must be tracked down to save Floyd from losing all of his talent to Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rannells).

“Trolls Band Together,” the third chapter in the DreamWorks Animation franchise, gets psychedelic with the introduction of new worlds and characters, helped along by some trippy 2D animation from Titmouse. It’s a musical tribute to ’90s boy bands, fittingly enough, as Justin Timberlake’s Branch reunites with his long-lost brothers (known as the family band BroZone): Floyd (Troye Sivan), John Dory (Eric André), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), and Clay (Kid Cudi).
But Floyd is kidnapped by pop-star siblings Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rannells) as part of their nefarious musical scheme.
“With Justin and boy bands as part of the DNA of the Troll universe, it felt like a natural extension, and also, musically and visually, it’s more psychedelic,” director Walt Dohrn (“Trolls World Tour”) told IndieWire. “If you can see my room, I live in a kaleidoscopic, Technicolor, psychedelic world. Though the end of the year is mainly the mainstay of serious and somber award-seeking films, there’s almost always room for family-friendly flicks. After all, there has to be a break from all the hectic holiday preparations, and what better way to relax than getting off your feet in one of those swell reclining plush multiplex chairs? So, the “mouse house” will arrive shortly with a slick fantasy fable, but how about their “major ‘toon rival”? Well, the fine folks at Dreamworks are completing a trilogy begun seven years ago when they put a new spin on a beloved baby boomer toy. Much of that spin involves music, as the lil’ critters interpreted classic (and some brand new) pop tunes. This makes their third outing feel a bit foreshadowed as those Trolls Band Together.
This new outing begins with a flashback to the final performance of the huge Troll boy band BroZone.

Stop me before I pun again.
It’s a mantra that I dearly wish the creators of the third installment in the hugely successful animated Trolls series had taken to heart. Capitalizing on the fact that one of the film’s main voice stars, Justin Timberlake, was formerly a member of one of the biggest boy bands in pop history, Trolls Band Together is stuffed with so many groan-worthy punning jokes and one-liners referencing such bands from the ‘90s and other eras that you wonder whether the film was made for its target tyke audience or their parents. Many of the latter will at least enjoy the pop culture nostalgia while enduring the perfunctory storyline.
You have to admire Timberlake for being willing to make fun of his showbiz past. The plot involves the revelation that his character, Branch, was once the baby (literally) member of BroZone, a mega-successful boy band featuring his four brothers,...

“Unicorns” explores a world not seen much in feature films — the world of “gaysians,” the South Asian gay community in the U.K. The film, directed by Sally El Hosaini (“The Swimmers”) and James Krishna Floyd and written by Floyd, follows Aysha/Ashiq (charismatic newcomer Jason Patel) a queer, Muslim, South Asian drag queen living a double life who sparks a friendship then romance with white, straight mechanic and single father Luke. The film bowed to rave reviews at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. Protagonist Pictures is handling international sales at AFM.
“Unicorns” is El Hosaini and Floyd’s third collaboration.
“I think mainstream society is very good at lumping very reductive identity labels on all of us. Obviously, in terms of sexuality, but I think in terms of everything in terms of race and gender and I’ve always felt that these things are very gray and very fluid.

When DreamWorks’ original “Trolls” movie was released, it wasn’t immediately apparent that the studio was launching a musical franchise. The rainbow-bright computer-animated feature boasted a sparkly soundtrack and the voice of Justin Timberlake as grumpy, gray-skinned Branch, but it wasn’t until the sequel — “Trolls World Tour,” released straight to streaming during the pandemic — that the series explicitly embraced its Top-40 ’tude. Now, having survived the rock apocalypse of that film, the saga rewinds to explore Branch’s backstory … as the junior member of a boy band, BroZone, in zero-calorie sugar high “Trolls Band Together.”
If you’re wondering why this is the first you’re hearing that Branch once performed arena concerts — as the diaper-clad “Baby B” — with older brothers Floyd (Troye Sivan), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), Clay (Kid Cudi) and John Dory (Eric André), just imagine how his girlfriend, Queen Poppy (Anna Kendrick), must feel about the news.

The Trolls are back with a third cinematic outing, this time in Trolls Band Together – and to mark the film’s release, we spoke to the director Walt Dohrn.
The filmmaker, who has an affable demeanour that you’d expect from the man who helms such feel-good, vibrant movies – talks about the popularity of this franchise, and what he believes gives them such longevity. We naturally talk about the music, which plays a huge part in the world, with a voice cast consisting of the likes of Justin Timberlake and Kid Cudi, and of course on this occasion, the return of boyband Nsync, as Dohrn tells us what that was like bringing the band back together. We also can’t help but ask about working with Eric André…
Watch the full interview with Walt Dohrn here:
Synopsis
Poppy discovers that Branch and his four brothers were once part of her favorite boy band.

Not so the Trolls franchise, which is less veg, more M&Ms spiked with liquid LSD. This new film does have a message but honestly, characters, themes, messages – they are all just a backdrop to the glitter and bonkersness.
Trolls Band Together is the third film in the franchise – and possibly the loopiest. Anna Kendrick returns to voice Poppy, queen of the Trolls, who is now officially dating grumpy Branch (Justin Timberlake). But he has a secret: he was once in the mega famous boyband BroZone with his four brothers. The truth comes out after one of the brothers, Floyd...
