After a nearly three-year hiatus due to Covid, the California Spirit Gala tasting event returned to the Sony lot on Sunday to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.
Hundreds of guests gathered on a breezy afternoon to enjoy food provided by over a dozen different chefs from some of Los Angeles’ hottest restaurants. Attendees enjoyed oysters from The Lobster courtesy of chef Govind Armstrong, fried chicken from Howlin’ Rays, chocolate monkey shoulder in a whiskey torte by pastry chef Sherry Ward and marinated peppers with tuna from Osteria Mozza served up personally by L.A. restaurant legend Nancy Silverton.
As they have for several years now, Phil Rosenthal and Sherry Lansing served as the gala’s honorary co-chairs, and Rosenthal spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the importance of using food to unite people.

Get your knives ready: Top Chef Masters returns tonight with a brand-new season of culinary competition, extreme criticism, and put-upon expressions as another batch of 22 master chefs (including some familiar faces, six in number, who get another shot) return to the Top Chef kitchen to compete for charity. Be sure to stay up for tonight's fantastic season premiere of Top Chef Masters ("First Date Dinners"), airing at 11 pm Et/Pt (don't worry: the series relocates to 10 pm next week), in which six master chefs--Ana Sortun, Govind Armstrong, Jerry Traunfeld, Jimmy Bradley, Susan Feniger, and Tony Mantuano--are put through their paces with a Quickfire and Elimination Challenge that will test their conceptual, execution, and time management skills while putting a charitable donation--and the ability to advance to the next round--on the line. The competition has always been fierce on Top Chef--the forebear of this series which instead features up-and-coming chefs looking for restaurant seed money--but,...

It's good to have an iteration of Top Chef back on television, a breath of fresh air--or the enticing aroma of cooking, at least, wafting through my TiVo. Last night's season premiere ("First Date Dinners") found the first week's six master chefs--Ana Sortun, Govind Armstrong, Jerry Traunfeld, Jimmy Bradley, Susan Feniger, and Tony Mantuano--competing for a shot at the next round and a sizable donation to the charity of their choice when they were forced to contend with a flashback Quickfire Challenge from the very first season of Top Chef and an Elimination Challenge that tested not only their skills in the kitchen but also how well they could work with their teammate to conceptualize a duo-plated dish. What's that you say? Teammate? Yes, these masters were paired together throughout the entire episode, making it even more essential that they stopped thinking of themselves as the chief and more as...

One of our favorite reality shows, Top Chef Masters, returns for a second season tomorrow night, April 7 at 10:00 Pm.
In a very unusual twist for a reality show, Top Chef is inviting back past players for another attempt at the title. Graham Elliot Bowles, Wylie Dufresne, Ludo Lefebvre, Rick Moonen, Mark Peel, and Jonathan Waxman were all eliminated in the first round of Season 1, but they will return for a second shot at taking home the prize for their charity.
Also returning is host, Kelly Choi, and judges Gael Greene, James Oseland, and Jay Rayner. Joining them will be Gail Simmons who sits at judges table in the original Top Chef series as well.
From this sneak peak video, it looks like egos flare, knives fly, and a good time will be had by all viewers. The new cast is made up of a wide array of 22 culinary icons...

"Top Chef Masters 2" really turns up the heat with a slew of fun celebrity guests as well as returning chef'testants seeking redemption.
Among the guests will be the cast of "Modern Family" (perhaps a family style meal challenge?), "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening (yellow food?), Hank Azaria who voices Moe and others on "The Simpsons," "Lie to Me" actor Mekhi Phifer, Olympic swimmer Jason Lezak and a trio of the "Real Housewives of Orange County," Lynne Curtin, Alexis Bellino and Tamra Barney, reports EW.
The site also lists Andrew Zimmerman as a guest, but since Wikipedia says Zimmerman is a professor of German history at George Washington University, we're going to guess that they meant Andrew Zimmern, host of Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods." German food, while exotic to some and rich in history, probably isn't as challenging as what Zimmern will bring to the table. [Update: In a press release sent out Wednesday, Bravo confirmed Zimmern's participation.]
Now on to the chef'testants.

Top Chef took a homespun -- but no less gourmet -- turn this week as the 10 remaining cheftestants got to work in the kitchen of the Top Chef house, cooking up a family style dinner party for a spate of celebrity chefs. Again, the chefs were paired up -- prompting some heat between several pairs. Quickfire: Guest judge Tyler Florence presided over the Quickfire challenge. The chefs were randomly assigned three words to describe the "mood, taste and texture" of a dish they would have to cook. In a flashy Vegas twist, the adjectives were furnished via a slot machine -- and ranged from the specific ("spicy") to the abstract ("romantic") to the possibly new-to-some-viewers ("umami," one of the five basic tastes which vaguely corresponds to "earthy or meaty"). Among the lowlights: Eli, whose umami mushroom dish was drowning in citrus; Jennifer's scallop and caviar combo; and Robin, whose curry...
