You will probably laugh the first time Alejandro (Julio Torres) walks though the frame in Problemista, seemingly bouncing off the ground before gliding across it, almost as if he were walking on eggshells—or paintings of them. (More on those in a bit.) Which makes sense, given that this aspiring toy designer from El Salvador who’s looking for a co-signer for his visa so that he can remain in the United States is very wary of angering the powers that be who are holding him back from his dreams in both visible and invisible ways.
But somewhere around the fourth or fifth time that Torres performs this dormouse shimmy in his feature-length directorial debut, the gag lapses into the grating. What initially scans as a reflection of a young man’s existential fear of disrupting the order of the universe becomes a literalization of how Torres tentatively circles his...

“Problemista” has hit a problem with its theatrical release.
Distributor A24 has officially delayed the August 4 premiere of Julio Torres’ film, which debuted at 2023 SXSW. A new release date will be determined later; the news comes after Amazon pushed back Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and Lionsgate delayed the release of “White Bird.” Deadline first reported on the “Problemista” delay, which IndieWire confirmed.
Deadline first reported that A24 opted to release “Problemista” once the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved so writer/director/actor Torres and co-star Tilda Swinton could be available to do press promoting the indie film. The rollout was slated to begin with a limited release while Torres was doing a press tour with screenings and Q&As. The film will still play at a sold-out Outfest showcase on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Exclusive: In light of the current strikes, A24 is pausing the release of Julio Torres’ Problemista which was set to launch limited on Aug. 4. The new release date will be determined down the road. The studio is doing this to support filmmaker Torres, furthermore these awards-type indie movies need their stars, Tilda Swinton here, available to do press and raise such fare’s profile.
Problemista is the second August release after Lionsgate’s White Bird to move off its opening date; that pic originally scheduled for a limited release on Aug. 18. It’s obvious the SAG-AFTRA strike is having a more immediate upending impact than anticipated. Studios are able to pivot with these movies at the last minute as they do not have long-lead tentpole campaigns with big TV spends.
The movie made its world premiere out of SXSW where it notched 91% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

When Ramy Youssef is writing an episode of his self-titled Hulu show, he absolutely loves walking that fine line between comedy and drama. “It’s probably my favorite thing to do in comedies, to just get near that thing you’re not supposed to. I feel that if someone’s gonna give me their time, I want to be able to cover something that could crack open a conversation at the dinner table that wouldn’t have been opened without some sort of healthy debate,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). He feels that with the most recent season of the program he has really found that perfect tone to strike for the series. “I feel like in the third season we really struck a great balance between our character development and it being something that just really makes me laugh out loud.

Bella Hadid‘s Ramy character is revealed in the Season 3 trailer, above. Returning to Hulu September 30, the Ramy Youssef-led comedy-drama follows first-generation, Egyptian-American Ramy Hassan and his family as they navigate spirituality in their politically-divided New Jersey neighborhood. In the new season, Ramy continues to question his Muslim faith as part of a millennial generation that doubts an afterlife even exists. His family is forced to confront having lived a life dedicated to worldly concerns — and in some cases, lies — while Ramy all but abandons his spiritual journey, instead dedicating himself to the diamond business he has with his uncle. Hadid makes her acting debut as Lena, revealed in the trailer to be a love interest of Ramy’s buddy Steve (Steve Way). The two met on a Muslim dating app called Muslim Match, which apparently does not require users like Steve to be Muslim. Ramy also stars Moon Knight star May Calamawy,...

"If you save one life... you save the world." Disney has debuted another new 60-second "Destiny" trailer for a new Marvel Studios series Ms. Marvel, a sort of spin-off from Captain Marvel, similar to the Hawkeye series about a nerdy fan of the Avengers who ends up becoming a superhero herself. Ms. Marvel introduces us to Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani, a 16-year-old Muslim Pakistani-American from Jersey City, NJ who writes superhero fan fiction. She discovers she has her own polymorphous (shape-shifting) powers. The series cast also includes Aramis Knight as "Red Dagger", Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Matt Lintz, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, and Azhar Usman. You know, I honestly think this looks pretty dang good. Like Hawkeye, I wasn't expecting to be into it, but I thoroughly enjoyed that series and there were a few outstanding episodes. Ms. Marvel might just be worth a watch,...

"Maybe they're right... I spend too much time in fantasy-land." Disney has revealed the first official trailer for a new Marvel Studios series called Ms. Marvel, a sort of spin-off from Captain Marvel. This also falls in line with the Hawkeye series from last fall, about a nerdy fan of the Avengers who ends up becoming a superhero herself. Ms. Marvel introduces us to Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani, a 16-year-old Muslim Pakistani-American from Jersey City, NJ who writes superhero fan fiction, particularly of Captain Marvel. She learns she has her own polymorphous (shape-shifting) powers. The series cast also includes Aramis Knight as "Red Dagger", Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Matt Lintz, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, and Azhar Usman. This looks fresh and fun! A bit of Turning Red mashed up with Captain Marvel. Perfect song choice for this trailer, too. "Do you know what you are?...

Muslim-Pakistani teen Kamala Khan hails from New Jersey, is an avid gamer with an overactive imagination, and a fervent scribe of fan-fiction. Oh, and she also happens to have some crazy superpowers of her own once after exposure to a mist turns her into a polymorph and gives her body the ability to stretch in almost any way possible. Welcome Marvel Studios’ first Muslim superhero lead to the screen with “Ms. Marvel,” the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe series, which hits the Disney+ arrival June 8. Watch the trailer below.
In the footage below, we see Kamala Khan try to attempt a balance of high school, family life, the general pangs of teenagehood, and, of course, her budding superpowers. Kamala is also a particularly huge fan of Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers), meaning that this series serves up the kind of pretzel twist meta-dom that’s typical in the MCU.

The show’s second season followed Ramy as he found a new Muslim community and embraced a deeper commitment to his faith.
“Ramy” is written, executive produced, and created by Ramy Youssef, executive produced by A24’s Ravi Nandan, co-creators Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch, Jerrod Carmichael, and Chris Storer.

As more people spend their twenties developing into who they want to become rather than settling down and committing to their current identity, more TV shows are focusing on that extended maturation period between teenage folly and adult responsibilities. From “Girls” to “Superstore,” and “You’re the Worst” to “New Girl,” plenty of comedies have mined the awkward and exciting time when personal decisions come with extra pressure, whether it’s from parents impatient to see children follow in their footsteps, the imposing demands of societal standards, or an internal desire to just hurry up and figure out your life already.
Viewers wouldn’t be blamed for shouting that at select 20-something TV characters, given how many shows have tackled this modern day “arrested development” (and how many have done it badly). Hunter (Haley Bennett) has never had control over her life. She’s tried her hardest to claim some, however, by giving away her love. She gave it to a mother who treated her like an afterthought compared to her siblings, a career in art that always found itself to be just out of reach, and the man (Austin Stowell’s Richie) she walked down a matrimonial aisle towards despite his only ever seeing her as a prize—a possession for a shelf of conquests someone in his socio-economic sphere needs to prove successful. As every projection of her love was met by indifference and/or irritation, it ate at her resolve to believe it was possible to become whole. Numbed to their apathy, Hunter’s compulsion to feel changed course.

Exclusive: We’ll be seeing more of Uncle Naseem in Hulu’s Ramy. Laith Nakli, who recurred as the character opposite Ramy Youssef in season 1, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming second season.
Ramy’s Uncle Naseem (Nakli) is a loud, opinionated, misogynist who owns a successful diamond store in New York, where he gives Ramy a job in hopes of teaching him to “be a man”. Charismatic in his own horrible way, Uncle Naseem has the strength of his convictions and isn’t afraid to stand up (or get beaten up) when he sees something that he feels is wrong.
Ramy is based on the real-life experiences and comedy of Youssef, who stars. Co-created and co-written by Youssef with Katcher and Ryan Welch, the series takes viewers into the world of Ramy, a first-generation American Muslim on a spiritual journey in his politically divided New Jersey neighborhood.

On the surface, newlywed Hunter (Hayley Bennett) seems to have it all: a handsome and successful husband, a beautiful home, a comfortable life, and a baby on the way. Perfection is something that is highly prized in her world, and under the ever-mounting pressure of attaining it, Hunter begins to feel overwhelmed. One day, she develops a strange craving for swallowing household objects and she finds that it relieves her anxieties for a short while.
Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ script is a wonderfully feminist take on perscribed gender roles and the prison they can create. The set design is a gorgeous blend of modern and vintage, giving the film the feel of “classic Americana” while also keeping it grounded in the modern era. It’s a beautiful illustration of how 1950s gender and social norms are still very much a part of our culture today, and how damaging that can be. Hunter...
