It’s no secret that the Star Wars prequels had a way of draining the charm and personality out of even the most talented and charismatic of actors. At least, for the most part. When it came to Samuel L. Jackson though, that wasn’t quite the case, as the legendary performer emerged from the oft-ridiculed trilogy mostly unscathed. True, his turn as Mace Windu was weighed down by some rough dialogue, but the Jedi master made a strong impression with fans and to this day folks are still calling for him to wield the purple lightsaber once more.
Whether it’ll ever happen or not remains to be seen – and we wouldn’t hold our breath – but it at least sounds like the actor would be all for returning. Back in the summer, he revealed that he’d be “totally interested in revisiting Mace Windu” and now, in a more recent interview,...

Despite the tremendous amount of love fans have for Nick Fury, and the actor who plays him (Samuel L. Jackson), the character hasn’t been featured too heavily in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as of late. Though he was instrumental in putting the Avengers together, his role has been diminished quite a bit and he hasn’t been seen on screen since Age of Ultron. It looks like things will stay that way, too, as the actor isn’t signed on for any future Marvel movies just yet. Or is he?
It was only a few weeks ago when Jackson revealed that he wasn’t involved in Avengers: Infinity War or its sequel, the currently untitled Avengers 4. However, a new casting call for the latter film would seem to point to an appearance by the fan favorite, despite him denying that he holds a role in the pic. We can...

Patrick Hughes’ The Hitman’s Bodyguard is, in its simplest form, everything you’d expect from an August release. What does that mean? Well, you can count on an asinine story, distracting action, and wafer-thin plot devices that shouldn’t – in Any world – be met with positive outcomes. Tom O’Connor’s script is a two-hour excuse to send Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson on a violent road trip, plus a few extra scenes where Salma Hayek screams bilingual insults like a Barrio banshee. That’s about it. Unnecessarily overlong like so many films before, but there’s a reason why intentions are so simple – because, against all odds, Hughes succeeds where others have failed. Don’t ask me how (but I’ll tell ya anyway).
It all starts with Belarusian dictator Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman). Interpol wants to put this murderous tyrant away for good, but their trial witnesses keep getting murdered.

Why is Luke’s lightsaber green in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and not blue, like it was in The Empire Strikes Back? It’s a question that’s plagued fans for years now and the most popular answer seems to be that the color of the weapon is tied to the character’s personality. After all, the blue lightsaber wasn’t Luke’s to begin with, it was Anakin’s. As such, when the young Skywalker finally got one to call his own, it made sense that it’d be a bit different than his previous one, right?
Well, not quite. In Vanity Fair’s extensive Star Wars: The Last Jedi cover story, which was published this week and sent the internet into a collective tailspin, Lucasfilm Story Group creative executive Pablo Hidalgo shed some light on Luke’s lightsaber. According to him, it was actually supposed to be blue,...

Kong: Skull Island compares to an animated theme-park ride (valiantly, I must add). An exciting, Vietnam-era coaster enclosed by digital screens. From Kong’s hasty introduction, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts asserts his reboot with a mighty roar. Gone is Peter Jackson’s flabby primate, traded for a muscular, toned God-figure who’s been maxing his jungle gym membership. Tight glutes (like, super-defined) will come in handy when challenging Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, but that’s a few years down the road still. First comes a military invasion sold on scientific motivations, and a lunatic commander who calls for Kong’s monstrous head. Hold on to your butts (Oh yea, Sammy J. resurrects our favorite quote), crank some Creedence and pick a side – the king is back, baby.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a stuffy, supernatural period piece that fluctuates between “dull” and “exciting,” the latter description being lost in the former’s grasp. Tim Burton takes a more restrained route when adapting Ransom Riggs’ novel (screenplay by Jane Goldman), which is a breath of fresh air compared to previous endeavors like Alice In Wonderland and Dark Shadows (even Big Eyes to a degree) – but it’s still a tepid affair. What’s essentially X-Men: First Class meets The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (and women) takes entirely too long to uncover excitement, as the production opts for a dusty generational perspective instead of fantastical teen orphan adventure. Macabre fairy-tale-telling through strange character casting and minimal definition – certainly not the spectacle Burton hoped for.

If you haven’t seen The Hateful Eight yet, here’s my advice – stop reading. Stop right now. Quentin Tarantino’s eighth cinematic hootenanny needs to be digested organically, not spoiled by influencing statements. Pulpy surprises and a chaotic evolution demand reactionary enjoyment, as Tarantino meticulously fills this devastating powder-keg to the brim – primed for an explosive second act. Tension is meant to bubble naturally, foaming with Tarantino’s stir-crazy, who-killed-who madness. Read on at your own risk, partner.
Still here? Good. That means you’d like to discuss The Hateful Eight, and why wouldn’t you? This wild Western plays out like two wholly different films – one a Reservoir-Dogs-style character thriller, the other a gory Django Unchained shoot-em-up. An intermission divides the two segments, acting like a bi-polar switch between two opposite personalities. Patience is certainly required, but it’s also equally virtuous given how drastically things change. There I was,...

We Are Darren and Riley, a small web comedy series about two struggling comedians, is enjoying a growing online following after launching online last month.
The ten-part series tracks Darren and Riley (Darren Low and Riley Nottingham) as they navigate the perilous world of breaking into TV comedy.
The real-life long-time friends, who have known each other from childhood, originally conceptualised the series as a TV sketch comedy but decided to head down the digital route after feedback from their pilot suggested it was better suited to the web.
The decision was then made to keep the episodes short and sweet . around three to five minutes each . and released every week on Wednesday evenings.
It is a gamble that appears to have paid off with the duo enjoying considerable online attention given their previous anonymity.

As reported yesterday, filming for Avengers: Age of Ultron took over the University of East Anglia campus in Norwich, United Kingdom, where there were confirmed sightings of Chris Evans in his new Captain America uniform, Chris Hemsworth in his slightly altered Thor gear, and of course Robert Downey Jr. sans his Iron Man suit. While there were several other sightings (minor spoilers) reportedly on the set yesterday, UK photographer Sammy J Lee has shared with Cbm new photos of the "big three" as they rehearsed a scene together with writer/director Joss Whedon, and in front of a group of "Avengers recruits" (whose uniforms sort of resemble Quicksilver's as seen in Italy). It's also worth noting that it was assumed yesterday the campus was doubling for Tony Stark's Avengers Tower in Manhattan, NYC, but considering the open space that's being utilized in other recent photos, it's safe say it will...

If you spend any time on the internet, you’ll know that many people are debating whether Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake will hit the tone of Park Chan-wook’s original instant classic revenge thriller. Critically acclaimed, the Korean original has a very strong following of true cinema lovers, many of which who opposed the idea of a remake from the start. But, can we really write a movie off before even seeing it?
Many movies are remakes and we don’t even know it, plus not all remakes have a negative impact. Recent horror movies have given remakes a bad name, but thanks to some serious surprises this Comic Con from the people behind Oldboy, I’m here to say that we shouldn’t be so quick as to assume the ball is going to be dropped on November 27th when Josh Brolin steps into this coveted lead role.

Tickets are selling fast for the 46th Annual Awgie Awards, to be held in Melbourne on October 4.
To be hosted by writer, comedian and singer Sammy J, the ceremony will honour the achievements made by Australian writers for performance. The Awgie Awards are the only Australian awards judged solely by writers on the basis of the script . the writer's intention . rather than the finished production.
"The Awgies are the highlight of the year for us and a unique chance to celebrate the oft-unsung but stellar work created by Australian writers of the script," says Awg.s President and Academy Award nominee Jan Sardi..
.It.s a night that really just celebrates the importance of story and storytelling. And that.s what sets us apart from other animals in the end, the ability to tell stories..
Sardi says the slate of nominated work is once again a strong one.

The dog days of August are almost over, which means blockbusters are taking a backseat to all those lovely prestige pictures the studios trot out when the leaves change and Meryl Streep gets her thirst for gold like the Oscar vampire she is.
Heavy hitters like Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hanks, Kristen Wiig, Chris Hemsworth and the ubiquitous Benedict Cumberbatch all pop up in multiple movies on our annual list of the Fall's best and brightest. Fan favs like Thor (as in "The Mighty"), Ron Burgundy, Katniss Everdeen, Jack Ryan and Machete chop their way back to the big screen with much fanfare, but this time of year is all about the Oscar bait — a Golden Globe simply won't do.
Prepare accordingly for the season below. (And also check out Film.com's Ultimate Fall Movie Preview, plus all kinds of good stuff on MTV's Fall Preview hub.

The new horror anthology "The ABCs of Death" wants to give gorehounds what they want in alphabetical order by representing each of their 26 segments with a letter. That's fine with us, since we always have plenty of death scenes organized with the Dewey Decimal System, and here are 15 of the most memorable, bloody, and enjoyable ones in the bunch.
Oh yeah, um, spoilers.
Taketoki Washizu in 'Throne of Blood' (1957)
'A' is for 'Arrows'
In one of Akira Kurosawa's many samurai epics with star/badass supreme Toshiro Mifune, the two of them created the kind of arrow-related death that "Lord of the Rings" elf Legolas must dream about at night. By the time this Macbeth stand-in is done for he's got more wood in him than Jenna Jameson and resembles a stoned porcupine. Sayonara, sucker!

As a film obsessed writer and all around fanatic of the medium, you have no choice but to jump when given the opportunity to be in the same room as Quentin Tarantino, no matter what film he’s promoting. Yes, I was that lucky son of a gun this past Sunday, as Tarantino was making press rounds for his upcoming and already widely praised spaghetti western Django Unchained, but he was not alone. Not by a long shot.
On the roster set to appear with the famed director were Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), Django himself Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington (Ray), the legendary Samuel L. Jackson (Everything), Walton Goggins (Justified), and Don Johnson (Miami Vice). Star-studded, I know, but wait, there’s more! For reasons I don’t rather care about or question, Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception) and Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street) were able to participate, making a panel for the ages.

Everyone who's seen his wallet knows Samuel L. Jackson is a Bad Mother F**ker, but to solidify that claim he helped combine two of the baddest ass things on the planet: afros and samurais. In collaboration with manga creator Takashi Okazaki and Gonzo Studios, Sammy J. brought "Afro Samurai" to Spike TV in 2007 to resounding acclaim.
After the initial 5-episode run of the unconventional anime, the title African-American swordsman was brought back for an Emmy-winning TV movie "Afro Samurai: Resurrection," which only left fans clamoring for more. Thus, the official site claims the original creative team is joining forces with the Dominican Republic-based Indomnia Group to create a live-action film.
So what can the uninitiated expect? A strange, anachronistic blend of modern and feudal Japanese environments, for one thing. The mega-ultra-super violent toon is distinctive for its mature themes, dope RZA soundtrack, and literal geysers of blood comin' out...

We Are Movie Geeks welcomes guest blogger Tony Fernandez, a production assistant taking us inside the underworld of indie filmmaking.
Sometimes my job has its perks. For instance, the time I worked on a grindhouse short/photo shoot with a Suicide Girl. I spent an entire day in a cabin with a naked chick. And she was shooting guns. Big guns.
It felt like that scene in Jackie Brown where Sammy J. is watching that video of ladies firing assault rifles while wearing skimpy bikinis. Except this girl was completely nude and fired a rifle that was much larger than her.
This sounds great right? Well what if I told you that the cabin was in the middle of nowhere, without running water and full of ticks? The kind of ticks that will bite you.
The day started off normally enough. I arrived on set, chatted with the make-up artist...

I'm among those who can't wait to see Josh Brolin take the screen as the legendary gunslingin' bounty hunter Jonah Hex, but when Variety announced the creative team behind the upcoming film I have to say I was somewhat baffled. Now, the Jonah Hex story is strange even by comic book accounts with one storyline taking the ex-Confederate into the future - but I would argue the team assembled to bring the anti-hero to life is even stranger.
Here's the team:
Directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who)
This will only be Jimmy's second directorial duty and I have to say I'm a bit concerned. Turning from an animated Dr. Seuss feature to a dark and wry, anti-hero western tale seems a bit of a stretch. Horton Hears a Who was easily the best Seuss adaptation to come along in the last 10 years but even so, the source material...
