"What artists do is as important as anything else..." Gravitas has released a trailer for an indie film titled Paint, from filmmaker Michael Walker. The film, which premiered at Dances with Films this year, is a dark comedic journey about young NYC artists as they struggle to sell their first paintings. The film won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature at Dances with Films and will be out on VOD in December. Three friends from art school struggle to start their careers in the bizarre NYC art world, while trying to get by in life and figure themselves out. Starring Josh Caras, Olivia Luccardi, Paul Cooper, Comfort Clinton, Amy Hargreaves, François Arnaud, Vince Nappo, Kaliswa Brewster, Daniel Bellomy. This looks quite good! A smart script that's brutally honest about the absurdity of the art world. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Walker's Paint, direct from YouTube: Paint...

The trepidation of going into a cinema auditorium and seeing a bunch of prepubescent kids scream and shout obscenities and indulge in some terrible stuff is at an all-time high with Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys hailed as a kindergarten Superbad, whatever that means. It is quite strange that this film has been made in the first place.
Good Boys follows three 6th grade boys ditch school and embark on an epic journey while carrying accidentally stolen drugs, being hunted by teenage girls, and trying to make their way home in time for a long-awaited party…

Now are we fifth graders? Or are we sixth graders?!
While that beckoning battle cry is only uttered once, its intoxicating effect can be felt at every nonsensical turn in Good Boys, an hour-and-a-half long excuse to hear preteens curse without having to prepare any sort of punishment. The unofficial, perhaps surrogate prequel to Superbad, Gene Stupnitsky’s goofball big screen debut taps into a similar plight of pubescent confusion but sets the dial back a few more years.
Don’t let that fool you. They may be younger, but they’re just as vulgar.
This hard-r-rated comedy strikes up a buddying trio of fresh-faced sixth-graders, Max (Room’s Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams) and Thor (Brady Noon). Just off the brink of elementary school and more than likely the talk, they’re prepared to take on this confusing time hand-in-hand as the Bean Bag Boys. But the bigger...

Sometimes, a slight bait and switch is a good thing. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Good Boys was going to be nothing but utter filth. Sure, it’s a clear raunch fest, but that’s not the true tale of this film. They’re actually peddling a message here. Filthy as the humor is, it’s all tinged with childhood innocence and, believe it or not, a heart of pure gold. Tweens exist right at the intersection of childhood and the onset of adulthood, so this always had the potential to be funny. Well, it’s damn funny stuff, but actually has a heartwarming message about friendship to help make this far more than just a one trick pony. The film is a comedy about a trio of, you guessed it…good boys, even if they think they’re sometimes bad. Sixth graders Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams...

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

As beautiful spring weather moves into New York City for the first time this year, the lines for TriBeCa movies only get longer. And, for all of the talk that TriBeCa is a festival for “indies that aren’t really indies” because of the A-list stars in their casts, the greatest masters’ films always draw the longest lines.
In this case, the great master is the late, legendary documentarian Albert Maysles, whose final film In Transit made its world premiere. Maysles had been wanting to make a movie about passenger trains for decades, but an actual opportunity to do so only appeared in the last year and a half. Over that period, Maysles and his four collaborators (Nelson Walker, Lynn True, David Usui, and Ben Wu are listed as directors, but an opening title card announces “an Albert Maysles film”) observed the Empire Builder line between Chicago and Seattle, interviewing...

Director/writer: A.D. Calvo. Cast: Amy Crowdis, Robin Taylor, Josh Caras, Geneva Carr, and David Pirrie. This reviewer is a big fan of A.D. Calvo's previous film endeavor, The Other Side of the Tracks (aka The Haunting of Amelia). However, his latest production, The Melancholy Fantastic, is such a small film that tone and pacing are almost forgotten in the first two acts. Calvo offers another curious open ending, but The Melancholy Fantastic is more depression than extraordinaire. In the end, this critic was left with the question: what is missing? And, this review will offer a few answers. The film focuses centrally on Melanie played by Amy Crowdis (Breadcrumbs). Her mother recently passed away after a suicide attempt. Now, Melanie is alone in her house. Her schizophrenic thoughts keep her company while inciting her to murder. Then, Dukken (Robin Taylor) enters the picture. Will he turn her away...

Plenty of passionate filmmakers decide to give it a go in the horror genre. While some of them have the drive, the ambition, the talent, a lot of them fail to create a distinctive film in a genre that has seen it all before and will see it again a million times more. So when a director and writer like A.D. Calvo comes along, we here at Big Daddy Horror Reviews take notice. What sets him apart from so many others that have tried so hard at creating something original is his ability to create narratives that seamlessly blend elements of horror, psychology, drama, romance, fantasy, even a bit of nostalgia and whimsy. He did solid work in The Other Side of the Tracks (now titled The Haunting of Amelia) starring Brendan Fehr and Chad Lindberg. Now he is following that up with The Melancholy Fantastic starring Amy Crowdis, Robin Lord Taylor,...

A huge film favorite around the Dread Central offices is Lucky McKee's debut feature, May, which pretty much played as a national friggin' anthem for the misunderstood soul. A.D. Calvo's latest feature, The Melancholy Fantastic, looks to echo that film and up the ante in terms of freaky! Dig it!

Here’s a tip of the hat to all you eccentric kids out there — you can talk to that life-sized doll sitting in the corner of your room, but when the doll starts whispering sweet nothings back to you, it’s time to get the hell out of the house. Or at least, burn the damn thing. That’s not what our heroine in A.D. Calvo’s “The Melancholy Fantastic” does, which is good for us, because the result is this moody, atmospheric trailer. Calvo says he’s submitted the film to Sundance, and I presume other festivals as well. So if you’re one of those festival going types, keep an eye out for it. Suffering from her mother’s recent suicide, a delusional young girl falls for an alluring Goth, against the objections of a life-size talking muslin doll. The Melancholy Fantastic is a psychological thriller set during the holidays.

We've been following Calvo for some time now. We first broke news on his planned flick Snow White which went wide, but that was shelved for the time being and he shot another part of his "gothic mental illness trilogy" called The Melancholy Fantastic which I saw the trailer for over a month ago, and they finally decided to drop it today and we got the first heads up. I had some input on the trailer, so naturally I'm biased, but I like the whole idea from beginning to end and can't wait to see it.

Stunning stills for the first in A.D. Calvo's gothic mental illness trilogy The Melancholy Fantastic
Back when we first reported on Calvo's planned Lynchian Snow White adaptation, the news went far and wide, ending up on the AP wire. In the meantime, funding came through for The Melancholy Fantastic, the first in a trilogy of films "featuring a strong female lead character suffering from mental illness", which started shooting this past weekend, and now, we have the first incredible looking stills to show you. What's it about? Something wholly fantastic. Read on.
Against the objections of a life-size paper doll, a delusional young woman falls for a Goth in this unconventional holiday story. The Melancholy Fantastic weaves elements of classical existentialism into a disturbing psychological holiday thriller.
