The best podcast hosts are like friends, but better, because you’ll never have to go to their wedding and can click unsubscribe if they get weird. They’re company when you’re not dressed for company, officemates when you work from home, and family with a pause button.
Comedians Ed Gamble and James Acaster on the Off Menu podcast are especially good company because they’re funny gluttons. A cheese boy and a dessert boy/genie who, alongside shadowy lever-puller the Great Benito, are the owner-operators of a dream restaurant that asks guests from Dan Aykroyd to Louis Theroux to name their dream starter, main, side dish, drink and dessert, in that order.
If you’ve yet to have the pleasure, do get involved with this pick of the finest Off Menu episodes from the 200 (!) so far. They’ve been expecting you for some time…

Kendall Jenner can add sake master to her resume.
The model and reality TV star helped celebrity chef and restaurateur Nobu Matsuhisa relaunch Nobu Dubai at The Atlantis Palm on Friday night, performing the traditional Japanese ceremony “kagami biraki,” where one breaks open sake barrel lids to signify good fortune and harmony.
Japanese Taiko drummers kicked off the event to get the crowd going ahead of the ritual.
“Thank you for coming. I’d like to introduce my modest traditions from Japanese culture,” Matsuhisa told attendees. “Today is a very special day. I’d like to celebrate with all of you guys. Enjoy the party!”
Jenner, in a bright green dress and over-the-knee black leather boots, matched with long black gloves, joined Matsuhisa and Nobu co-founder Meir Teper and took a wooden mallet to break open the lid of sake. Celebrity guests — including singer Liam Payne, actress Nia Long and...

Dir: Mark Mylod. Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau, John Leguizamo, Janet McTeer. 15, 107 minutes.
Anti-capitalism is hot again. Or, I should say, hot, but served on a crunchy bed of pulpy violence and topped off with an ice-cold, liquid nitrogen-cooled, mousse of social satire. After Get Out skewered white guilt, Ready or Not poked holes in inherited wealth, and The Hunt tracked down liberal hypocrisy, the latest entrée to the burgeoning genre of class-conscious horror-comedy is Mark Mylod’s The Menu, which deftly fillets an array of targets, from culinary snobbery to performance art.
Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) are heading off on a boat, bound for an island where they will experience the tasting menu of a lifetime. Margot, it soon transpires, isn’t half as interested in the evening’s itinerary as her food-obsessed partner. “Don’t smoke, you’ll kill your palate,...

Popular gastronomy seems to come in two extreme flavors these days. At one end of the chicly underdressed table is the kind of easy-breezy, culturally scattered, make-it-your-own casual dining epitomised by Jamie Oliver and Alison Roman. At the other is food as fussy molecular science: hyper-sculpted, tweezer-assembled and outlandish in flavor and presentation, it has made Michelin-starred gods of the likes of Heston Blumenthal, pushing the idea of fine dining into near-fantastically rarefied realms. Mugaritz, the much-lauded Spanish restaurant that is the focus of “Stage: The Culinary Internship,” falls haughtily into the latter category: Abby Ainsworth’s handsome, diverting documentary presents it as a self-styled ivory tower, to which a gaggle of wide-eyed junior chefs annually struggle to gain access, yet there’s as much bemusement as awe in its gaze.
“The pictures are beautiful, but is it food?” muses young Korean chef Kim as he pages through the Mugaritz cookbook.

The British Film Insitute (BFI) has invested in David Abraham’s production company Wonderhood Studios.
The film body has made its first investment with the deal, via the UK Creative Content Eis Fund, which it launched earlier this summer in association with Calculus Capital and Stargrove Pictures.
This comes after Deadline revealed that Wonderhood Studios, launched last year by former Channel 4 CEO and ex-TLC U.S. boss Abraham, scored its first two commissions with the BBC.
It is making Eat The Years, starring celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, and Trump In Tweets for the BBC and has also scored commissions with C4 as well as a BBC One project in advanced development.
Wonderhood’s advertising studio also recently created a campaign recognising the contribution of black players to England’s football team for Nike.
Abraham said, “Wonderhood is a new generation creative business focused on innovative content that impacts on culture.

One of the many pleasures of attending the Cannes Film Festival is tacking on a getaway to one of the Europe’s many easily accessible destinations. Even just a weekend helps to decompress from the film frenzy — especially if it’s in wine-soaked Provence, swinging London or a renowned spot near Lisbon. Try these lodgings for much more than just a hotel room.
Movie History in Portugal
One of Portugal’s grand resorts, the Palacio Estoril is just a half-hour from downtown Lisbon near the quaint beach town of Cascais. Built in 1930, its lobby and grounds served as location for the James Bond film “In Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” In fact, one of the concierges who appeared in the film as a young man is still at the hotel today. It’s adjacent to the Estoril Casino, which served as inspiration for Ian Fleming’s “Casino Royale,” but the Palacio also offers golf,...

The Bottom Shelf returns, with a video nasty, The Howling 2, and a tribute to the late Herschell Gordon Lewis...
To most, September 26th is the date when, in 1680, the Dutch city Gorinchem suffered a citizen’s revolt due to an imposed tax on cereal. From now on, though, that will change, as any right-thinking person will remember that date in 2016 as the day The Godfather Of Gore, the great Herschell Gordon Lewis, died.
The brain behind a range of vintage cult classics, spanning the gamut of exploitation cinema, from splatter movies to comedy erotica and supernatural witchcraft thriller (niche!), Lewis’ influential sixties and seventies productions paved the way for the video nasties of the eighties and the gory likes of David Cronenberg and Peter Jackson and stand up today as camp, gawdy historical documents of a bygone era. As such, to coincide with an impeccably timed release...

When chef Marco Pierre White published his autobiography in 2006, his infamously tumultuous life was guaranteed to be a dramatic read. Originally titled White Slave, the book was released in America under the new moniker, The Devil In The Kitchen, and readers were not disappointed. Now, it seems the story of the man widely regarded as the first ‘celebrity chef’ may be headed for the screen, as Ridley Scott, Giannina Facio and Colet Abedi have optioned the work for development.
Following the man from his humble and tragic beginnings in Leeds, UK, to the height of fame and fortune at the centre of London’s restaurant scene, The Devil In The Kitchen depicts the genesis of “the godfather of modern cooking.” Earning his stripes from some of the best chefs in the country, such as Albert Roux and Raymond Blanc, White himself would go on to train Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal,...

Miami - Let it never be said that the Miami Film Festival doesn't know its competition. I'm not talking about South By Southwest, running concurrently in Texas at a pace so comparatively frantic that they scarcely seem like equivalent events, but the glorious spring sunshine, currently bathing the city's Art Deco-staggered skyline in honey-clear warmth too delicious to ditch for even the comfiest movie theater. Fully aware of this, Miami is the festival that comes out at night, concentrating its screenings in the evenings and following them up with parties that shoot for Cannes levels of razzle -- all without the shadow of a 7am wake-up call. If there's a more coolly considerate festival on the circuit, I haven't been to it. Activity intensifies over the fest's opening and closing weekends. Arriving late on Sunday, I missed much of the former, including a glittery kickoff bash attended by Anne Hathaway,...

Bombarded with belfies? Up to here with status updates? 2013 is the year digital bragging took over the web. We expose the worst offenders
This is arguably the year in which internet self-obsession reached new heights. Not only did we see that digital chronicler of daily minutiae Instagram announce that it had surpassed 100m active users, but the Oxford English Dictionary people announced that "selfie" was to be the official word of the year. Little did they know that all the coolest, on-trend narcissists had already moved on to "yogis" (yoga + selfie) and "belfies" (bum + selfie), leading us to wonder exactly where self-absorption has to go from here. While we're contemplating that with horror, we thought we'd take a look at the smuggest four corners of the internet currently in existence.

Two in three (67 percent) said that they find the recipes in many glossy cookbooks intimidating, according to the survey commissioned by Italian food company.

Carl Magnus Lindgren is one of two senior chefs from The Fat Duck -- Heston Blumenthal's Michelin-starred UK restaurant -- who were killed in a tragic car crash in Hong Kong.
The chefs, who were visiting on business, were riding in a taxi when it was struck by a double-decker bus.
Along with 30-year-old Lindgren, Jorge Ivan Arango Herrera, 34, and taxi driver, Wong Kim-Chung, 53, were confirmed dead after the taxi was pinned between the bus that struck them and a second bus that was struck.
Speaking to the BBC, a spokesperson for The Fat Duck calls the men "two uniquely talented young chefs that were loved by everyone who worked with them. They will be sadly and deeply missed."
According to Hong Kong police, 56 people were injured in the collision. The bus driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and subsequently released on bail.
An investigation is pending.

Celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal admits to using tampons as a palate cleanser in a recent food diary for the Guardian. The chef justifies that there is a culinary use to them, he states "the tampon dries the saliva out between spoonfuls, so you can identify how the tongue perceives flavour."
Surely the absorbency of the feminine hygiene product does do what Blumenthal states, but still, the idea of this is still quite odd. However, it is a much more intelligent and safer use than vodka tampons.

I am not one of those people who hate the idea of Facebook making money. But in its latest attempts to make money from brands, it has lost its way.
Sponsored brand messages are interrupting, confusing and pissing off my friends.
And the brands have become so obsessed with getting “likes” for their posts, they’ve mostly stopped saying anything relevant.
Today was the final straw though. It dawned on me that the more brands I choose to like on Facebook, the less likely my friends are to see my own updates.
Which means I’m going to have to start unliking brands. As others realise what is going on, I suspect they’ll do the same thing.
The issue is that the algorithm quietly changed a few weeks back. Now, somewhere towards the top of the news feed, users are offered a “pages you may like” section.

★★☆☆☆ Getting to see the processes behind Heston Blumenthal's wacky culinary experiments on various television shows is something that many members of the public thoroughly enjoy. You might think then, that the chance to peek behind the scenes at a thee Michelin-starred restaurant in Catalonia, Spain, that is considered one of the finest purveyors of imaginative haute cuisine in the world would be equally as thrilling. Regrettably, German filmmaker Gereon Wetzel doesn't manage to wow the audience like the food on offer might in his documentary El Bulli: Cooking in Progress (2011).

Is Danny Boyle's vision of England's green and pleasant land all that it seems?
Something has happened on the way to the Olympics. On Tuesday morning the opening ceremony was launched as a vision of rural Britain, a land of fields and ploughmen, cottages, cows, sheep and horses, of Glastonbury, cricket and the Proms. According to its impresario, Danny Boyle, the title of the show, Isles of Wonder – a metaphor for Olympian Britain – was "inspired by" Shakespeare's The Tempest, specifically Caliban's speech.

Instead, he inhabits an island awash in conflict, drink, sex and dark arts. He does at one point call it "an isle full of noises,...

The 71-year-old movie legend - who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the iconic sci-fi series as well as starring in the X-Men franchise - has just passed his official Ards racing driver test and is ready to compete in a special Celebrity Challenge race at this summer's Silverstone Classic powered by the AA.
"I'm relieved and delighted," said Stewart who passed both written and driving tests required to obtain a Msa competition licence at a rather damp Silverstone.
"It's such a fast learning curve from the moment you first step into the car. At one point it was raining quite hard out there; I could hardly see out of the windows... and you really do need to be able to see out of the windows when you're driving fast!

With just an hour to go before the Queen's Jubilee Concert, the sun broke through the clouds above Buckingham Palace and the drizzle that had threatened to dampen proceedings halted, and patriotic crowds began to stream through the golden gates.
The 10,000 people lucky enough to have attended the Queen's Jubilee Picnic in the afternoon came laden with a wicker hamper stuffed with food treats created by Michelin star chef Heston Blumenthal, including the apt Coronation chicken.
For those just arriving, it was rain macs and Union Jack flags they clutched in their hands, along with the goodie bag handed out to everyone, once they had successfully passed through the ID checks and metal detectors that made up security.

From red, white and blue wigs, to hats made from balloons, patriotic headgear was all the rage in the crowd, who raced to the front...

London — The celebration of the 60-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II is ready to rock `n' roll.
A gala concert kicks off at Buckingham Palace on Monday evening with a full hand of knights – Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Cliff Richard and Sir Tom Jones – heading the lineup, along with Dame Shirley Bassey and younger artists including Jls, Kylie Minogue and Will.i.am.
Will the queen enjoy it? Her musical tastes are a mystery, and the Press Association news agency reported she brought a pair of earplugs to a similar concert a decade ago. According to The Guardian newspaper, the only song the queen has ever been known to request is "Some Enchanted Evening" from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "South Pacific."
