House Speaker Mike Johnson told student protesters at Columbia University on Wednesday to “enjoy” their free speech before declaring that he would urge President Joe Biden to deploy the National Guard to universities and colleges across the country — where students are being arrested en masse in an increasingly violent crackdown against pro-Palestinan protests.
Johnson and a group of Republican representatives were not welcomed warmly during their visit to what has become an epicenter of pro-Palestine activism on college campuses, which came as protests raged at higher-learning institutions nationwide. Videos circulated...

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) signed a bill allowing state authorities to arrest any migrants who entered the United States illegally. Immigration is typically a federal not a state, issue.
“The Biden administration has failed to enforce our nation’s immigration laws, putting the protection and safety of Iowans at risk,” Reynolds said in a statement, during which she had announced the signing of the legislation, which goes into full effect this July.
“Those who come into our country illegally have broken the law, yet [Biden] refuses to deport them,” she added. “This bill gives Iowa law enforcement the power to do what he is unwilling to do: enforce immigration laws already on the books.”
The Iowa governor is one of many Republican governors who have fiercely criticized Biden’s immigration policies.
She deployed the Iowa National Guard to back Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s anti-migrant measures and made several trips to the U.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott suggested that he wants to end transgender and gender nonconforming individuals from expressing their gender while teaching in the state.
At a speech delivered Friday at the Young Conservatives of Texas convention, Abbott described a report of a high school teacher who wore feminine clothing rather than clothing that matched their gender assigned at birth. Abbott said this teacher “was a man who would go to school dressed as a woman in a dress, high heels, and makeup” and declared that he wants to “end” that...

It’s eclipse day in America, and if you thought Fox News was going to act normal about it, you were wrong.
The right-wing news network wasted no time on Monday attempting to link the moon’s brief blotting out of the sun to migrant crossings at the Mexico border.
“Fox News alert! A rare celestial event collides with a policy failure on the ground. The southern border is directly in the path of totality today when the moon covers the sun,” host Dana Perino said during Monday’s broadcast of America’s Newsroom.

The A24 original film Civil War is days away from its April 12 release. The dystopian thriller is helmed by famed director Alex Garland and stars actors Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Jesse Plemons among others.
The film’s action-packed trailer was released in December 2023 and got many fans talking. The gritty teaser depicts a fractured American society wherein rebel forces band together to launch an attack against the President. The Potus has turned into a tyrant after he disregarded the Constitution and began attacking his citizens.
However, the Civil War trailer got fans talking about the strange alliance it showcased between two American states, who, in reality, don’t see eye-to-eye on many important topics.

SXSW 2024 is hurtling toward its conclusion, and the music portion of the festival entered the weekend with a bang on Friday. The loudest, busiest night so far this year featured tons of great sounds if you knew where to look, or even if you didn’t — in a year that’s been as much about unofficial shows as the ones on the schedule, serendipity was the rule. Here are the best things we saw on March 15.

SXSW 2024 kicked off its first full day of music on March 12 with a smattering of must-see shows around town, plus some tension in the air thanks to the festival’s relationship with the U.S. Army. (When Texas Gov. Greg Abbott chimed in on social media, it was the kind of noise that no one needs.) While a number of acts cancelled their official showcases, many of them continued to play unofficial shows for the audiences that SXSW brought to town, and several spoke out in support of the Palestinian people and against war.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and SXSW on Tuesday traded jabs on social media in response to a group of as many as 60 bands who have pulled out of Austin-based festival to protest its sponsor ties to the U.S. Army, as well as its inclusion of defense contractors taking part in some of the fest’s conference programs.
“Bye. Don’t come back,” Abbott wrote on his personal Twitter (X) feed today as news of the pullouts spread. “Austin remains the HQ for the Army Futures Command. San Antonio is Military City USA. We are proud of the U.S. military in Texas. If you don’t like it, don’t come here.”
On its own social media accounts, SXSW responded to Abbott, saying “SXSW does not agree with Governor Abbott,” adding that the organization “welcomes diverse viewpoints. Music is the soul of SXSW, and it has long been our legacy.

Organizers of the music festival South by Southwest, which takes place annually in Austin, sparred with Texas Governor Greg Abbott on social media Tuesday. After the governor criticized bands that had pulled out of the festival over objections to the U.S. Army sponsoring it, writing “Don’t come back,” the festival’s official X, formerly Twitter, account responded, “SXSW does not agree with Governor Abbott.” The music component of the festival started on Monday and will run through Saturday.

After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told artists boycotting SXSW over its U.S. Army sponsorship, “don’t come back,” the Austin-based festival is saying that it does not agree with that sentiment. “We are an organization that welcomes diverse viewpoints,” the fest said in an Instagram post Tuesday.
In the lead-up to SXSW, multiple musical acts that were scheduled to perform pulled out, citing the U.S. Army’s “super” sponsorship of the festival, as well as American support of Israel’s war in Gaza. (Other “super” sponsors, which are granted the highest level of visibility at the fest, include Volkswagen, Porsche and Delta.) In all, 60 artists are said to be skipping the fest.
Abbott wrote on X on Tuesday: “Bands pull out of SXSW over U.S. Army sponsorship. Bye. Don’t come back. Austin remains the HQ for the Army Futures Command. San Antonio is Military City USA. We are proud of the U.

Texas governor Greg Abbott is slamming the artists boycotting SXSW due to the festival’s U.S. Army sponsorship — but SXSW doesn’t want his support.

Abbott’s post refers to the many bands that have pulled out of SXSW’s music programming citing the U.S. military’s relationship with Israel and its role in the ongoing violence in Gaza. Perhaps most prominent of the boycotting artists is Kneecap, the Irish band that stars in the comedic biopic of the same name, who on Monday wrote that cancelling their appearance would have a “significant...

The upcoming release of A24’s Civil War during a contentious presidential election year comes amid worrying about the prospect of an actual civil war — or, at least, real-life political violence — and has some questioning the movie’s timing.
The film from acclaimed writer-director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) imagines a near-future dystopia where the United States has been torn apart under the authoritarian ruled of a three-term president (Nick Offerman). The story follows a journalist (Kirsten Dunst) as she makes her way across this freshly divided states of America (trailer below).
Civil War hasn’t been seen yet by the media or audiences (its world premiere is next week at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival), so criticism of its content is arguably premature and — at minimum — lacks considerable context. The film’s trailers suggest Civil War isn’t some obvious left-wing/right-wing polemic given that Texas and California...

Trump, who toured the Texas-Mexico border Thursday alongside the increasingly militant Gov. Greg Abbott, at one point waved at migrants through a barbed wire fence and claimed, “They like Trump, can you believe it?”
Co-anchor Colin Jost offered a rational response, given Trump’s Hilter-adjascent rhetoric about migrants “poisoning the blood of our country.

Both Donald Trump and President Joe Biden addressed migration across the southern border during dual visits to Texas on Thursday.
Trump spoke in Eagle Pass, a border town in the Rio Grande Valley that has become a flashpoint recently due to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s dispatch of the Texas National Guard to wrest control from U.S. Border Patrol agents.
During his speech, Trump said that Biden was allowing “millions of people from places unknown” to cross the border illegally. He keyed on those who speak the language of their country of origin.

Eagle Pass, Texas — The video is 13 seconds long. In the foreground is an orderly green lawn, lit and safe. In the background, there are the lights of Mexico, Coahuila state. In the middle is the river. It’s a void, darker than the night sky.
Amid crickets, a woman’s voice echoes from the void, or maybe a child’s. Then a man’s. They’re crying out for help.
The lawn belongs to former state Rep. Poncho Nevárez (D), who represented Eagle Pass in the Texas Legislature for eight years.

Update: Associated Press is reporting a woman in a trench coat opened fire with a long gun inside celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s megachurch in Texas before being gunned down by two off-duty officers who confronted her.

Police said the woman entered the church with a 5-year-old boy shortly before 2 p.m. The woman began shooting, as officers at the scene “engaged” her and the woman was killed. It’s an election year, which means it’s once again time for Republicans to care about the border. The GOP has done all it can to raise hell over the issue — from holding government funding hostage over their extreme demands, to trying to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, to backing Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s legally dubious crusade against the federal government’s dominion over the border — while blocking efforts to bring about real change. Republicans in the House, for example, are refusing to back a bipartisan immigration deal.

Seattle Children’s Hospital has sued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) over what they consider an invasive and unlawful request from his office to turn over information on Texas residents who received gender-affirming care at the out-of-state hospital.
The hospital is seeking to have a November subpoena issued by Paxton dismissed by the Travis County District Court. The Texas attorney general had demanded unredacted access to information on Texan children who have been treated at the hospital, their medication, diagnoses, as well as lab and test results.

Annette Bening had a defiant message for foes of LGBTQ rights and equality in the United States, specifically political leaders who are targeting the trans community. “You do not want to make this momma mad,” said the four-time Oscar nominee as she received Advocate Award on Oct. 28 from Glsen’s Rise Up LA benefit, which raised funds for the group’s programs supporting queer grade-school students across the country.
Bening — who is the mother of a trans son, writer Stephen Ira, as well as three other children — spoke at the event about why she has become increasingly vocal in advocating for the trans community in recent years.
“Most of my career, I’ve been a pretty private person … but over the last several years, I’ve changed my mind,” said Bening, explaining, “I have felt the responsibility to speak out and to speak up as transphobia has invaded our government at the local,...

Five years ago, with Beto O’Rourke mounting an electrifying campaign to unseat Ted Cruz from the U.S. Senate, Democrats seemed hopeful that the political winds were shifting in Texas to one day make it a purple state. He ultimately lost by 2.6 percent amid a record turnout for a mid-term election.
Since then, Democratic hopes for turning Texas into a swing state have diminished. In the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump made gains with Hispanic voters. And the state legislature has become increasingly conservative with a host of bills signed this year by Republican Governor Greg Abbott that include barring public universities from creating Dei offices, banning transgender athletes from college sports, and restricting labor rights. In 2022, abortion was banned in the state following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) thinks his ruby-red home state of Texas is going blue.
Casar spoke about his 2022 campaign, which was featured in the new documentary Texas, U.S.A., with uInterview founder Erik Meers.
“It was a really fast and quick campaign,” Casar recalled. “I was committed to being an Austin city council member, had been working to make sure that people’s homes weren’t lost during the pandemic, make sure that people were able to survive that time of sickness and difficulty for so many people was working on that recovery.”
When the seat opened up in Congress, Casar decided that this “felt like the right moment” as he wanted to speak about “the really big issues facing people across the country, but especially in Texas where abortion was starting to become outlawed.”
During his campaign, abortion was outlawed in Texas right after the state had faced major natural disasters.

Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was acquitted on Saturday of corruption charges, following an articles of impeachment trial which included misconduct, bribery, and corruption allegations.
In May, his fellow party members voted to impeach him, concluding he may have committed numerous crimes and that he abused his position to help his friend and donor Nate Paul, an Austin real estate developer.
Following the 121-23 House vote in May, he was immediately suspended him from office as he awaited trial in the state Senate, where his wife, Angela Paxton, is a member.

Insecure star Kendrick Sampson is going to Dallas where SAG-AFTRA is set to hold a rally on Saturday. The visit is significant to Sampson in support of Texas actors navigating the strike under the leadership of Governor Greg Abbott, who he calls an “evil human being”.
SAG-AFTRA members will rally at 9am on Saturday in Dallas’ Reverchon Park.
“I’m heading to Dallas to support another SAG[-AFTRA] action for the workers there in solidarity with everything – all the wild, craziness that Governor Abbott is imposing on everybody. He’s just an evil human being,” Sampson tells Deadline at the Star Trek picket held at Paramount Studios on Friday.
“I’m frustrated and it’s a super emotional day. This is bulls**t. The fact that we have to do this and the fact that we have so many people out here. I’m on the verge of tears...

When Holly Weaver began teaching in 2014, she started because she loved literature, and wanted to share that with students. But she quickly realized that her class, filled with kids from diverse communities and socioeconomic backgrounds, needed something completely different.
“I saw very quickly some inequities within school systems,” Weaver says. “I realized that my job as an English teacher was much more than teaching kids about literature. I had to learn very quickly how to pull in as many cultures as possible so that all of my students felt represented and seen.

It’s midday in midsummer and dozens of men and women are crouching, splayed out on cardboard, or standing in midtown Manhattan, beaten down by the heat. After a journey that’s taken many of them across an ocean or through a dangerous jungle — past multiple border enforcement agents demanding payment to allow them to keep moving forward — they’re hoping their journey is finally coming to an end.
But in the United States, they’ve come to a standstill a block away from Grand Central Station. The scene at the Roosevelt Hotel,...

Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey is still undecided whether he wants to swap Hollywood for a career in politics. McConaughey, 53, has been getting more involved with politics in recent years and has discussed gun reform policies with US President Joe Biden after a shooting at a school in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas in 2002. However, McConaughey isn’t sure if his future lies in office, Aceshowbiz reported.
During an appearance on US TV’s ‘This Week’, McConaughey was asked if he could see himself running for office and he replied, “There’s a great question that I’m still answering.”
The ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ actor elaborated on his Greenlights Grant Initiative which he launched with his wife Camila Alves in July to help communities access government grants to prevent school violence and support the mental health of young people.

Could an October surprise be coming to Hollywood’s picket lines and C-suites?
Gov. Gavin Newsom is prepared to step in to try to broker a deal between the WGA, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP if there is no significant movement by the fall, we hear.
“He’s the obvious choice to bring the parties together and bring down the temperature,” a political and industry insider says of the nimble and notoriously patient politician. “Getting a deal will be a test of his Jenga skills, but that’s where Newsom likes to surprise people.”
Unlike past Tinseltown labor actions, no neutral interceder has emerged so far that the unions and the studios trust and respect to guide them to a deal.
Increasingly looking to non-Hollywood revenues, agency chiefs still are tainted in many union members’ minds from the long and bitter packaging battle with the WGA. Heavyweight attorneys are seen as...

San Francisco, June 15 (Ians) The US state of Texas has banned kids under age 18 from joining social media platforms without parental consent. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill, called Hb 18, that requires social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and TikTok to receive explicit consent from a minor’s parent or guardian before they’d be allowed to create their own accounts.
“A digital service provider may collect a minor’s personal identifying information if the minor’s parent or guardian consents in a manner that is specific, informed, and unambiguous and takes into account the minor’s age and the minor’s developmental and cognitive needs and capabilities,” read the bill.
The new bill also forces social media platforms to prevent children from seeing “harmful” content by creating new filtering systems.
Last week, Louisiana passed a similar bill to require parental consent.

It’s Memorial Day weekend, when ostensibly the U.S. puts aside its differences and unites to pay respect to military members who died while serving the country. This weekend, however, a segment of the right wing are freaking out about the impeachment of one of its own, who has demonstrably given enough pause in his alleged conduct that his fellow party members voted he be impeached. The Texas GOP-controlled House of Representatives voted to impeach state Attorney General Ken Paxton on Saturday. The Republican Ag was impeached on 20 articles including bribery,...

The mystery surrounding Tucker Carlson’s ouster from the airwaves at Fox News — and his future plans in media — are coming into sharper focus.
On April 26, Carlson spoke by phone with one of Fox Corp.’s eight board members, who told the host that his recent benching was a condition of Fox News’ settlement with Dominion Voting Systems, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the conversation.
The unnamed board member told Carlson that the condition does not appear in any of the settlement’s documents, and instead was a verbal agreement. If Fox didn’t comply, the settlement was off, Carlson was told. Dominion had plenty of leverage given that the $787.5 million deal to settle Dominion’s defamation suit against the network wouldn’t officially close until late-May.
If Dominion opted to blow up the deal, Fox would return to square one on settlement talks or potentially subject the...

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Daniel Perry to 25 years in prison for the murder of Black Lives Matter protester Garrett Foster. However, it is unclear how much time Perry will serve, as Texas Governor Greg Abbott has promised he will pardon Perry if the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles send him a request.
On Tuesday’s first day of the sentencing hearing, the prosecution asked District Judge Clifford Brown to give Perry a minimum of 25 years in prison, saying he was a “loaded gun” who had the potential to harm people again,...
