When describing a big star’s new release, two clichés are frequently used: it is highly anticipated and long-awaited. Well, the 11th studio album by pop sensation Taylor Swift can’t exactly be called ‘long awaited’—just 18 months have passed since the release of her previous album, Midnights. The Grammy winner made her ‘highly anticipated’ 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, available on Friday, April 19, 2024.
The 16-track album is peaceful and enjoyable to listen to, but if you read the lyrics carefully—as most Swift fans do—you will discover a convoluted and disorganized stream of thought where Swift swings between waves of introspection, rage, longing, and grief.

Also, it is interesting to note that this latest album credits the two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone for her work on the song Florida!!!.

Andrew Watt and Pearl Jam entered the world at practically the same exact moment. The 33-year-old producer was born Oct. 20, 1990, the same week that Eddie Vedder traveled to Seattle from San Diego to meet his future bandmates for the first time. “They’ve said to me they were probably writing ‘Release’ while my mom was giving birth to me,” Watt says. “And then they played their first concert two days after that at the Off Ramp cafe. I don’t want to get too biblical about it, but it’s very,...

Roger Daltrey wrapped up his 24-year stint as the curator of the Teenage Cancer Trust Sunday night with a grand ‘Ovation’ concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The bill featured longtime Teenage Cancer Trust supporters Eddie Vedder, Robert Plant, Paul Weller, and Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics. The Who played two Teenage Cancer Trust shows earlier in the week, and Pete Townshend was originally on the bill for the ‘Ovation’ event, but he had to travel to New York for the opening of the new Tommy on Broadway.

Before Jack Black took the pop culture world by storm with a breakout role in 2000's "High Fidelity," the actor, musician, and comedian had his doubts about the movie. In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Black reflects back on his decades-long career and admits that he initially passed on the role of music junkie Barry over fears that it might negatively impact his own real-life music career.
"My friend, John Cusack, was like, 'You would be perfect for this role, Barry, in 'High Fidelity,'" Black recalled (Cusack starred in and co-wrote the movie). "I was hesitant because I was like, I don't know if I want to make a movie about rock and roll, and someone who is a critic of rock and roll." Though "High Fidelity" is a music-lovers' classic now, the film based on a Nick Hornby book features some painfully authentic music snobbery,...

Post Malone appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday, and while he was there, he delivered a stirring acoustic rendition of Alice in Chains’ signature hit, “Them Bones.” Watch the performance below.
Introducing it by saying “Hey, Howard, hopefully I don’t fuck these lyrics up,” Post began his take on the song, playing guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s signature chromatic riff on a beefy acoustic guitar, as he was backed by a choir. Building tension through the opening verse, the arrangement blossomed on the first chorus when the drum line dropped and Post belted the iconic “Ah’s” originally delivered by Alice’s Layne Staley.
By the end of the song, Post was able to build enough energy with his gravelly croon that it’s easy to forget that you’re listening to an acoustic version of the grunge anthem. He finished it off with a final a cappella “Ah,...

Barack Obama has once again let people in on his version of the sounds of summer with his annual playlist for the season, with songs including “Fast Car” by Luke Combs, “Snooze” by Sza and the classic “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding.
The former commander-in-chief curated 41 songs for the list, which he posted on his Twitter account Thursday, representing genres ranging from folk to rap to pop. Among those chosen that drew attention on social media: Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj’s “Princess Diana,” and Boygenius’ “Not Strong Enough.”
Janelle Monáe’s “I Only Have Eyes for 42,” seemingly an ode to threesomes, also made the cut, which the entertainer noted on her Instagram stories: “Barack know what’s up!”
But Obama also featured more traditional songs on the list, like Aretha Franklin’s “Doctor Feelgood” and a live version of Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love.

The time has come again for Barack Obama to share his summer playlist; as usual, it’s a mix of classics and modern hits. Catch the former president with headphones on, and you may hear him listening to modern cool kids like boygenius or Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj, or revered legends like Leonard Cohen. You may also hear him listening to “Walk Like an Egyptian.”
You could clown on Obama for including the latter track, but you can’t say The Bangles don’t deliver some summery fun! Those good vibes continue with cuts like 2Pac’s “California Love” and Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” Elsewhere, the 2023 playlist slows down for Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” and Luke Combs’ take on “Fast Car,” Tracy Chapman’s 1988 song that recently charted even higher than before thanks to the unlikely country cover.

In "The Summer I Turned Pretty" season two, the whole cast are reeling in the aftermath of the death of Susannah (Rachel Blanchard). As viewers watch what this first Susannah-less summer has in store for the characters, we also see flashbacks to the past year, including Susannah's funeral. In episode three, released alongside the first two episodes on July 14, Conrad (Christopher Briney) takes out a guitar and performs Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss" in honor of his late mom. Before giving his brief and heart-wrenching performance, he notes that Susannah always asked him to play it for her.
In the Jenny Han books the series is based on, Conrad does play guitar (though there's no mention of him singing). Although he doesn't play guitar or sing in the rest of season two, fans might wonder if that's really Briney singing the emotional song during the episode.

Seattle’s Brad have released a new song and music video for “Hey Now What’s the Problem?” off their upcoming LP, In the Moment That You’re Born. The album will drop July 28th via Loosegroove Records.
The new tune features a straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll vibe, with distorted guitars from Stone Gossard (also of Pearl Jam fame), driving bass and drums from Keith Lowe and Regan Hagar, respectively, and fiery vocals from late singer Shawn Smith.
The song’s music video, directed by Hagar, features live footage from classic Brad performances with pop-culture imagery from movies, TV shows, and horror films.
“Hey Now What’s the Problem?” follows the album’s debut single, “In The Moment That You’re Born,” which was released earlier this year. That song was unveiled on the 30-year anniversary of Brad’s debut album, Shame, which arrived on April 27th, 1993 via Epic Records.

As Covid-19 wanes in the United States, symptoms like loss of taste and smell are on the outs too. Imminently returning to the “in” list, though: hearing loss.
“This is a fucking rock concert!” yelled Dave Grohl, repeatedly, as a Foo Fighters performance that seemed a third louder than any other act’s capped the Global Citizen-produced Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World May 2. A TV taping for a special to air across networks on May 8, it doubled as the first concert at L.A.’s new SoFi Stadium, and America’s first real stadium show since the pandemic began. Even with the Foos bringing tinnitus back, you could hear the wider reverberations.
“I don’t know how it’ll be looked at three or five years from now,” said Ken Ehrlich, one of the broadcast’s executive producers, the day after filming. “But I can tell you...

The Grammys’ rock categories are usually filled with interesting, though sometimes questionable, choices. This year in particular, the rock genre boasts a lot of noteworthy contenders ranging from hard rock to more Americana-inflected music. Let’s take a look at who’s in the hunt for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song nominations this year.
The Killers might be the front-runners with their hit “Caution.” The song was number-one on rock and alternative radio, and the band might be overdue for a Grammy at this point with seven past nominations and no wins. Joining them will likely be Brittany Howard with “Stay High,” which could earn her a win due to passion for her potential Album of the Year contender, “Jaime,” not to mention the fact that she’s been nominated five times before for Best Rock Performance, including a win for “Don’t Wanna Fight” in 2016 with her band Alabama Shakes.

Earlier this year, conductor Keith Levenson called the shutdown of the live music industry “a clusterfuck of enormous proportions” in an interview with Rolling Stone. That off-the-cuff statement inspired him to create the charitable organization Fustercluck as a means to help people in the industry that have seen their livelihoods take away from them.
Fustercluck is raising money through music parody videos, T-shirts, and a new In the Coop Zoom interview series where Levenson interviews prominent musicians. First up is Eddie Vedder, who worked with Levenson back in 1994 when Levenson...

Miley Cyrus has answered fans’ prayers and released “Edge of Midnight (Midnight Sky Remix),” a mashup of her new single “Midnight Sky” and Stevie Nicks’ spiritual predecessor, “Edge of Seventeen.”
Unsurprisingly, Cyrus’ synth-pop banger blends perfectly with Nicks’ 1982 hit. The two singers trade off verses from both songs, and it’s difficult to tell exactly what was recorded in 2020 or nearly 40 years ago. If her recent marathon of covers weren’t enough, “Edge of Midnight” is further proof that Cyrus is in her element when calling back to classic rock legends.

After nearly a half-century of dividing her time between bands like Heart, the Lovemongers, and Roadcase Royale, guitarist Nancy Wilson is finally releasing her debut solo LP. She’s still putting the finishing touches on the album, but she’s tentatively calling it The Lab, and her lead-off single, a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising,” is available right now.

Miley Cyrus is having a different kind of viral moment than she has in the past. Thanks to the series of covers she’s done on The Tonight Show, iHeartRadio Festival, BBC Radio 1 lounge, and every other remote program she’s appeared on over the last couple of months, Cyrus has repeatedly garnered attention in the best way possible. Ranging from Blondie to Billie Eilish, the covers Cyrus has performed prove a point we’ve long known: She’s a powerhouse vocalist, dominating a lonely class outside of anything her peers are doing.

Miley Cyrus is set to headline a new installment of “MTV Unplugged” from her Los Angeles home, the network announced Monday.
The pop star will perform an original cover of “Gimme More” by Britney spears, as well as covers of songs by Pearl Jam, The Cardigans and more. In the tradition of “Unplugged,” Cyrus will also perform stripped-down versions of her own hits.
The episode, titled “Miley Cyrus Backyard Sessions,” will air Friday, Oct. 16.
“Backyard Sessions” will be Cyrus’ second “Unplugged” after previously doing the show in 2014 to promote her album “Bangerz.” Cyrus also recently did a virtual performance of her recent single “Midnight Sky” at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards.
MTV revived the “Unplugged” series earlier this year as an at-home performance series for the network’s social channels. JoJo, Alessia Cara, Jewel and the K-pop boy band Monsta X are among the acts who have recently performed on the show.

In honor of National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Friday (June 5), Pearl Jam officially released for the first time the original, uncensored 1992 video for its classic song “Jeremy,” directed by Mark Pellington. This version has circulated in varying degrees of quality online and on Pellington’s Web site for some time, but the update unveiled by Pearl Jam on Friday has been remastered in HD and features a new audio track first remixed by Brendan O’Brien for the 2009 reissue of the band’s 1991 Epic debut album “Ten.”
The release comes as gun violence continues to plague the United States, particularly the recent murder of Breonna Taylor by policemen in Louisville, Ky., which has become a rallying cry for protesters all over the world. It also extends Pearl Jam’s longtime support of gun violence initiatives, including contributing fellow “Ten” track “Porch” to the just-released documentary “Parkland Rising,” about the teen-driven...

Pearl Jam released the uncensored version of their “Jeremy” video for the first time Friday to mark National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
The Ten song and its corresponding Mark Pellington-directed video — which won Video of the Year at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards — detailed the story of a bullied teenager who shot himself in front of his classmates.
In the original, edited 1992 video, the suicide is insinuated, but in the uncensored (and newly remastered) version that Pearl Jam uploaded Friday, Jeremy — played by actor Trevor Wilson — is shown placing the gun in his mouth.

We’ve seen Elisabeth Moss take on corporate male toxicity in Mad Men, a ghost of a man in The Invisible Man, Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale and punk rock in Her Smell. This weekend we’ll see her as a horror author who tries not to unravel as she goes through her creative process in the Josephine Decker-directed Shirley.
The film, which is adapted from Susan Scarf Merrell’s 2014 novel of the same name, bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is based on the real-life horror author Shirley Jackson and her husband Stanley Hyman.
“We were not making a film that we ever thought, ‘Oh, we’re making a film about the real Shirley Jackson’,” Decker told Deadline at Sundance. “In fact, the script really meshed up a bunch of timelines in the real Shirley Jackson’s life, so it absolutely was a fiction.
