With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.
Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.
The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.

Billy Magnussen always understands the assignment. Whatever the medium or genre, the actor manages to stand out with an impressive range. He has literally played a Disney prince — twice! — in the film versions of “Into the Woods” and “Aladdin.” He earned a Tony nomination for his role as a dimwitted young lover in “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” and has stood out in ensemble films like “Game Night” and “The Big Short.”

HBO’s “Succession” series finale will be 90 minutes long, according to one of the key members of its creative team. In an interview Wednesday, the show’s Emmy-winning composer Nicholas Britell confirmed that rumored run time to Variety.
“It’s 90 minutes,” Britell said. “It’s a huge episode — like a movie.”
The episode will be directed by “Succession” executive producer Mark Mylod, and will air on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, May 28.
While little else is known about what to expect, Variety previously reported in a cover story with HBO chief Casey Bloys that the network is not developing any spinoffs.

Succession hit another audience milestone this week.
The fourth episode of the final season inched its way to another series high audience with 2.6M people tuning in across HBO Max and linear telecasts on Sunday.
Total viewing was up 4% over last week’s viewership of 2.5M and 11% above the Season 4 premiere episode’s 2.3M. Season 4’s debut has now tallied nearly 8M viewers, according to HBO.
This marks the third time that Succession has drawn a record audience this season. The second episode was the only one so far to not increase its viewership week-over-week, with about 2M people watching same-day.
The Season 4 premiere of Succession was up 62% compared to Season 3’s premiere viewership of 1.4M in October 2021. At the time, that marked the best premiere night performance of any HBO original series since HBO Max launched in May 2020.
