Wednesday’s season 21 premiere of Top Chef is a hard reset in a number of ways, most obvious among them being the new host. For the first time in 19 seasons and just as many years, it isn’t Padma Lakshmi gently but decisively telling an unlucky hopeful to pack their knives and go. It’s Kristen Kish.
The season 10 winner, initially kicked off the competition before fighting back to the finale on spin-off Last Chance Kitchen, emerged as an early and clear favorite to fill Padma’s shoes when she announced her exit last summer. Kish has been a familiar face to the franchise since her 2012 win, expanding her TV horizons by hosting the Netflix update of Iron Chef and National Geographic’s Restaurants at the End of the World. But those who tune in to the start of Top Chef‘s Wisconsin-set cycle will notice that Kish isn’t the only change.

When Top Chef makes its long-awaited return for its historic 21st season, it’ll be with a new host, chef and TV presenter Kristen Kish. You may not only recognize Kish from her shows on the Travel Channel, TruTV, and National Geographic but also as a former Top Chef competitor.
In fact, Kish won her season of the competition show, after first being eliminated in season 10 but then making a comeback in Last Chance Kitchen to ultimately beat out 23 other chefs. It’s an impressive resume, to say the least, and there’s arguably no one more qualified to take on the job of host and judge on Top Chef than someone who’s actually been through the gauntlet.
As great as it is to see Kish as the new face of Top Chef, some longtime fans might be left wondering why former host Padma Lakshmi decided to step down from the show.

After 20 seasons, “Top Chef” has gone through some significant changes. Most notably, former champion Kristen Kish replaces longtime host Padma Lakshmi for Season 21, which also introduces its first major twist — at least since the introduction of redemption with “Last Chance Kitchen” — to the overall gameplay in two decades.
“It was a great opportunity for us to take a look at what we’ve done for the first two decades and start thinking about the next two decades,” Ryan Flynn, SVP of Current Production for NBCUniversal Entertainment and Streaming, told IndieWire. “With Padma moving on, it really felt like a great exclamation point” on that period of the franchise.

For Kristen Kish the opportunity to join “Top Chef” for season 21 as its new host happened quickly. “I flew to LA, had a series of meetings, and then a couple of weeks later I got a call that said, ‘You are “Top Chef” host,'” she explains. The long-running cooking competition series premieres Wednesday night, March 20, and it’s a year of change for the show. We chatted with Kish and her fellow judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons about what we can expect. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Obviously we’ll miss Padma, and she made 19 amazing seasons with us,” Simmons says. This year, the Best Competition Program Emmy category stands out from all others in that every nominee has previously conquered it (or the special class category from which it derived). Notably absent from the lineup is surprise 2022 victor “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” which has yet to return for a second season after wrapping its first last March. This gives 2018-2021 winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race” a clear shot at redemption that is almost sure to pay off.
“Drag Race” is one of three series in this group that has already taken this prize at least four times, along with “The Amazing Race” and “The Voice.” Also in the mix are one-time winners “Top Chef” and “Survivor,” the latter of which has remarkably reached the end of a 16-year, 30-season snub streak.
In order to gauge the possibility of any show beating “Drag Race” here, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Out of the hundreds of meals Padma Lakshmi experienced during her 19-season run on “Top Chef,” one stands out as her favorite.
“There was a great episode with Charlize Theron in Texas [Season 9],” Lakshmi told TheWrap. “We gave the contestants this wonderful challenge, which was to pick a fairy tale and illustrate it in all its wonder, horror, beauty, joy and, of course, deliciousness on the plate. And it was really wonderful because it unleashed such a sense of imagination and creativity and all of our chefs and that’s really what you want to see.”
“I remember that Grayson gave us a black chicken and left the chicken foot on there and it looked so sinister. And it was delicious,” she recalled. “Paul Qui had a bloody handprint in the middle of his dish made of beet juice and all these delicate vegetables and flowers around. He showed that murder...

Gail Simmons continues to find inspiration 20 seasons into “Top Chef.”
The show’s milestone season, which filmed in London and Paris and featured all winners or runner-ups from international “Top Chef” editions, was a big risk, Simmons says.
“We were up against a million uncontrollable things as you face in non-scripted television and going abroad to film on the other side of the world,” the food journalist-turned-judge and executive producer said about the show’s first fully overseas edition.
The risk paid off, with the show earning five Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Reality Competition (which it won back in 2010), Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program and Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program, among others.
TheWrap recently caught up with Simmons to talk about “Top Chef: World All-Stars” and what she learned heading into Season 21.

When it comes to casting “Top Chef,” talent is the most important element a contestant must possess in order to compete. “Everything else comes second,” said Ron Mare, the Emmy-nominated Senior Vice President of Casting at Magical Elves, which produces Bravo’s long-running culinary competition. But it’s no longer necessarily a skill with knives that the casting team is looking for.
“You have to have that talent level in order to go on a show like this,” he continues, explaining that casting “Top Chef” is far different from the many reality series he’s handled in the past, like, “America’s Next Top Model” and “Project Runway.” As the series has evolved, so have the people cast on the show. While talent remains paramount, there’s more of an emphasis on compelling food stories, with host Padma Lakshmi telling “Entertainment Tonight” that “Top Chef” “shows audiences a very particular side of these chefs.

Padma Lakshmi hosted the cooking competition series “Top Chef” for 17 years. But she decided to leave her long-running gig to focus on her other series, Hulu’s “Taste the Nation,” and “other creative pursuits,” as she explained on social media. That means the long-running series is getting a new host, who has just been announced as Kristen Kish, the winner of season 10 of the series back in 2013. The new season will take place in Wisconsin — specifically the “unique culinary scenes in Milwaukee and Madison,” according to Bravo’s press release. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the Season 20 finale of Bravo’s “Top Chef.”
Buddha Lo became the first ever “Top Chef: World All-Stars” winner Thursday, beating out his finale competition Sara Bradley and Gabri Rodriguez in the Paris-set “Top Chef” Season 20 finale.
But Lo’s win was historic beyond that special 20th anniversary season achievement, as he became the first “Top Chef” contestant to ever win two seasons back to back, having claimed victory in Season 19, “Top Chef: Houston.”
Adding another layer of prestige, Lo has the honor of being the final contestant to be declared winner by Padma Lakshmi before she exits the cooking competition after 19 seasons as host.
Needless to say, Lo had much to discuss following the finale, and Variety caught up with him the morning after the finale to break down his big win, saying goodbye to Lakshmi and why he “definitely” couldn’t...

[Warning: The below contains major spoilers for Bravo’s Top Chef: World All-Stars finale.] Bravo’s Top Chef served authentic international flavor for its milestone season 20 with Top Chef World All-Stars. In all, 16 of the top winners and finalists from numerous global versions of the show were welcomed to London. It was there Buddha Lo (season 19 Bravo’s Top Chef: Houston winner), Sara Bradley (season 16 Bravo’s Top Chef: Kentucky finalist), and Gabri Rodriguez (season 2 Top Chef: Mexico winner) were tasked to cook a progressive four-course meal. They not only had to impress Padma Lakshmi, head judge Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons but guest judge Hélène Darroze and a table full of other culinary heavyweights. After deliberation, Lo, who had recently eliminated Ali Ghzawi as his sous-chef, was named the first Top Chef World All-Star. He won over the expert ...

This is going to sound like a backhanded compliment, but I mean it: One of Padma Lakshmi’s most valuable skills as the host of “Top Chef” — a major part of what will be missed when Lakshmi departs the show after the June 8 finale — is product placement.
In the crowded, sometimes tawdry world of reality competitions, “Top Chef” is unique in its credibility. The show is effective entertainment, but over 20 seasons in 17 years, the Bravo mainstay has also established itself as an arbiter of taste on par with the Michelin guide. Some of that authority comes from longevity; some from Lakshmi’s fellow judges, chef Tom Colicchio and editor Gail Simmons; some from casting, which has generated a talent pool so formidable that the show frequently circles back to its own alumni, including for this season’s London-set World All Stars. But a great deal of it comes from Lakshmi,...

“I hope that history repeats itself,” says Amar Santana at the start of the two-part season finale of “Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen.” “Season 13 of ‘Top Chef’ I won ‘Last Chance Kitchen’ and came back and went to the finale, and this season means a lot more to me because I’m competing against the best of the best. It’s my one chance to get back into this competition.” Watch his battle against Sara Bradley and Charbel Hayek above, and then watch the second part of “Lck” below.

By the time the ninth Wellington is served, an audible sigh of relief emerges from the six remaining Top Chef: World All-Stars contestants. The chefs, divided into three teams for the purpose of today’s elimination challenge, look exhausted, and deservedly so. Each team has just prepped, cooked, and delivered three different Wellington dishes — a fish Wellington, a meat Wellington, and a dessert Wellington — which require an incredible amount of technical precision, particularly when serving them to four judges and 20 diners.

Culinary super tastemaker Padma Lakshmi is once again in the running for Emmys, both for Bravo’s Top Chef and her Hulu series Taste the Nation. Over her years of hosting and executive producing Top Chef, she has earned 14 Emmy nominations herself, but victory has remained, tantalizingly, just beyond her reach.
“We’re in the golden age of television, and it’s really competitive. I’m sort of the Susan Lucci of reality television,” she tells Deadline. “It would be lovely to win, especially because this is our 20th season of Top Chef.”
Lakshmi made her debut as host in season 2 of the two-time Emmy-winning reality competition show, and has been a main ingredient in Top Chef’s success for 17 years now.

Last week, City Harvest, New York City’s first and largest food rescue organization, presented The 40th Anniversary Gala: House of Harvest, hosted by actor, model and producer Tyson Beckford, with décor by world-renowned celebrity event planner Colin Cowie.
The evening raised enough to provide more than 9.6 million meals for New Yorkers in need as they continue to grapple with record-high food costs, the end of federal aid programs, and the continued economic impacts of the pandemic.
The event honored the organization’s longtime Board Chair Jim Kallman and City Harvest’s frontline workers who were at the forefront of the organization’s work to help feed New Yorkers in need at the height of and throughout the pandemic. These frontline heroes helped rescue and distribute nearly 300 million pounds of food for New Yorkers across all five boroughs between March 2020 and June 2022 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

There was a bit of a surprise at the end of “Top Chef” season 20, episode six, “Top Chef is No Picnic.” The judges decided that Tom Goetter and Sylwia Stachyra were on the losing team and had the two worst dishes of the luxurious picnic challenge. One of them would stay and one of them would go. But there was a catch. “Come with me,” Padma Lakshmi told them. So they left Judges’ Table and made their way to two outdoor cooking stations. It would be a “Last Chance Kitchen” cookoff to decide who stays in the competition and who’s eliminated. Watch it above.
