The Rolling Stones brought out Tyler Childers in Orlando on Monday night, June 3, for a special performance of their Sticky Fingers classic “Dead Flowers.”
Childers upped the number of guitars onstage to at least four, strumming his acoustic guitar to match Mick Jagger’s while Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards (as always) traded licks on electric. Childers also split vocal duties with with Jagger and added an extra layer of harmony to the country-inspired tune.

Rock music is far from dead. Last year’s Grammy nominations proved that, with some of the leading acts in music being present in the rock categories. Alongside legends like The Rolling Stones and Metallica, the field was graced by the presence of Gen-z’s favorite artists, such as Boygenius, Arctic Monkeys and Olivia Rodrigo. So to find great rock music these days, you just have to pay attention. We are certainly paying attention this year, with a slew of buzzy releases already in the conversation to take home the gold come Grammy time.
One of the biggest stories in rock this season is the return of The Beatles with the single “Now and Then.” It’s unclear if the song will be competing in pop or in rock, but either way it’s for sure getting them a nomination. A music video made to their hit song “I’m...

The Offspring’s “Come Out and Play” (you know, the “gotta keep ’em separated” song) was all over MTV in 1994 — with a video that cost all of $5,000. The Nineties were full of unlikely breakthrough acts, but the Offspring were one of the few bands of the era who made it to the mainstream without even leaving their indie label, Epitaph.

It might not be immediately apparent from songs like “Sweet Child o’ Mine” or “November Rain,” but Slash’s roots are in the blues. “Everybody knows me as a rock & roll guitar player,” he tells Rolling Stone. “When I was a kid, though, I was exposed to great blues music from my family. As Black artists’ roots in country music continue to be rediscovered following the release of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, the founders of the upcoming I Made Rock ‘N’ Roll Festival — which Janelle Monáe will headline on Saturday — are hoping the event will have a similar effect in the rock genre.
“We’re really on a mission to showcase the authorship of the creatives that helped to build American culture,” says Alan Bacon, who cofounded Ganggang, the Indianapolis-based creative advocacy firm behind the festival, in partnership with Forty5, with his wife Malina Simone Bacon in 2020. “Rock ‘n’ roll is a big piece of that as one of America’s genres and Black creatives and artists have such a strong history in the creating of that genre.”

From “Fortnight” to “The Manuscript,” the latest episodes of Rolling Stone Music Now dive into every single track of Taylor Swift’s longest album ever, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. Along the way, we debate larger issues, including whether Swift intends all 31 tracks to be seen as the album proper, or if the latter half — added by surprise on the night of release — is actually more of a collection of bonus songs.

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome, and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.
But after a nearly two-year break from touring, the Stones emerged last year with the shockingly great Hackney Diamonds.

At the very moment Taylormania was hitting preposterous heights, threatening to turn the artist at its center into an untouchable icon, it turns out that the real Taylor Swift was spending her time between glittery three-hour concerts making some of her most fearless art. The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology is stuffed with the rawest, angriest, and most unguarded songs of Swift’s career – quite the opposite of the ingratiating, focus-grouped inoffensiveness that a skeptic might expect from an artist at her current level of visibility.

Slash has unveiled the latest single from his upcoming blues album, Orgy of the Damned, set to arrive on May 17th. The Guns N’ Roses guitarist teams up with country superstar Chris Stapleton on a cover of Fleetwood’s Mac’s “Oh Well.”

Beyoncé has landed another No. 1 album with Cowboy Carter.
Her country music album bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, according to Billboard and Luminate. Cowboy Carter, which dropped March 29, debuted with 407,000 equivalent album units earned in the United States for the week ending April 4.
This marks Beyoncé’s eighth No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200. It also marks the biggest week for an album so far in 2024, and the biggest since Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version), which debuted with 1.653 million units in November.
It’s also Beyoncé’s biggest week since Lemonade debuted at No. 1 with 653,000 units in May 2016.
In addition, the album debuted atop several other Billboard charts, including Top Country Albums, Americana/Folk Albums and Top Album Sales.

On Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé mixes R&b, country, and some hard-hitting guitars, among many other elements, and as the artist herself is well aware, there used to be a name for that kind of American melange: rock & roll. She slyly acknowledges that fact with two Chuck Berry moments on the album, including a segment of “Maybellene,” his first hit, in which a Black genius helped invent rock & roll via revved-up country.
So, there’s an argument that Cowboy Carter — which the artist has made clear is a “Beyoncé album” rather...

Jon Batiste is giving high praise to Beyoncé, with whom he collaborated on a new country music album, Cowboy Carter.
Beyoncé dropped the 27-track album Friday, but she made history last month with the release of single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart. That made her the first Black woman to accomplish such a feat, according to Billboard.
Batiste, who was one of several collaborators on Cowboy Carter, praised the Grammy-winning singer for her role in breaking down barriers across music genres.

He added: “Quincy Jones told me, as he also wrote in his forward to my We Are album, ‘it’s up to you to de categorize American music!! ,’ which is what Duke Ellington told him. I really believe that is our generations role,...

Each Song Was Inspired by a Western Film
Notably, each song is its own version of a reimagined Western film, including Michael Matthews’ Five Fingers For Marseilles; James Bridges’ Urban Cowboy; Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight; Clint Eastwood’s Space Cowboys; Jeymes Samuel’s The Harder They Fall; and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Often times, they films were playing on a screen during the recording process.
Additionally, some aspects of the album’s percussion were inspired by the Coen Brothers’ ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
Beyoncé also found inspiration in traditional country, R&b, blues, zydeco, and Black folk music, as well as from her childhood trips to the Houston Rodeo.

In addition to Slash, who recently announced a new album, the lineup will variously include the Warren Haynes Band, Keb’ ‘Mo, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Robert Randolph, Samantha Fish, Eric Gales, Zz Ward, Jackie Venson, and Larkin Poe, depending on the night.

Around the time Slash parted ways with Guns N’ Roses, he got deep into the blues and soul music. With a group called Slash’s Blues Ball, he reinterpreted the music of Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, and Stevie Wonder, among others, at gigs between 1996 and 1998. Now — nearly three decades later — the guitarist, who returned to Gn’R in 2016, is recommitting himself to that group’s repertoire on Orgy of the Damned, a new solo album due out May 17, which finds him trading licks with many of his famous friends.

The sessions started at Hollywood, California’s A&m Studios the night of Jan. 28, 1985, and didn’t end until well after sunrise the morning of Jan. 29. By that point, it was clear that nothing quite like “We Are the World” could ever happen again. The Greatest Night in Pop, a new documentary on Netflix, brings it all back to vivid life: co-writers Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie joined by Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and an improbably long list of other superstars, all crammed in...

One of last year’s most unexpected musical twists was the ascent of Zach Bryan, the rootsy singer-songwriter who sounds not unlike Bruce Springsteen or Jason Isbell — and went all the way to Number One on the Hot 100 with the ballad “I Remember Everything,” assisted by Kacey Musgraves. His self-titled fourth album was one of the best country/Americana releases of the year, but it’s only one of the unmissable 2023 releases in that category, from Jason Isbell’s own Weathervanes to Megan Maroney’s Lucky.

Kali Uchis’ genre-jumping career has so far been evenly divided between Spanish- and English-language albums, which feels about right for an artist who was born in Virginia but spent chunks of her childhood in her father’s native Colombia. “When you aren’t just one thing and you are as multidimensional of an artist as I am,” she says, “I think it’s a lot harder for people to figure out how to sell me as a product. But I think they don’t realize that being multidimensional is a...

On New Year’s Eve, we learned the improbable fact that a trio of middle-aged, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted punks in notably well-tailored suits can somehow still shock and offend the masses. For Green Day, all it took was changing the “American Idiot” lyric “I’m not part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of the Maga agenda” during their performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rocking Eve with Ryan Seacrest — a lyric tweak they’ve been using for years.

But once the now-legendary music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas came aboard, the show turned into a weekly showcase for some of the best music of the ’00s — and a key force behind the mainstream rise of a certain brand of indie-leaning rock in that decade, from Death Cab for Cutie to the Killers.
