Exclusive: Texas Monthly, the magazine that has been chronicling life in the Lone Star State since 1973, has continued its expansion into film and TV by setting its first-ever feature documentary, to be made in partnership with Peabody and Critics’ Choice Award-winning filmmaker Deborah Esquenazi (Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four).
The currently untitled film centers on James Reyos, a gay Apache man who for 40 years has sought to clear his name of the brutal murder of a Catholic priest in oil-rich West Texas. Embedding with the Innocence Project of Texas that has taken up Reyos’ case, Esquenazi with her doc sheds new light on a story that has eluded detectives, crime researchers and amateur sleuths for four decades, exposing a web of media lore and homophobia, as well as whispers of a possible serial killing team targeting clergy in the 1980s. John McClamrock’s story garnered worldwide attention and support.
The film will be produced by Jim Whitaker and Jeff Sussman and directed by Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann. Scott Brown, Texas Monthly president, Megan Creydt of Texas Monthly, and Kevin James are EPs.
The screenplay, originally by Jon Boyer and rewritten by Buck and Schlingmann, is based closely on the article as well as personal accounts from the McClamrock family.

Nicolas Cage will not be playing Joe Exotic.
The beloved actor was set to lead an Amazon drama series based on the Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild.”
But it sounds like the Tiger King craze is coming to a close with a thud.
“I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it come together,” Cage said to Variety of the decision.
“They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.”
Indeed, the world has changed substantially since Netflix's wildly successful docu-series hit the air in 2020.

Amazon Prime Video has opted not to proceed with a scripted series starring Nicolas Cage as the infamous Joe Exotic, subject of the hit Netflix docuseries Tiger King, Deadline has confirmed.
The project, from CBS Studios and Imagine Television Studios, was set up at Amazon for development almost a year ago, at the height of the Tiger King popularity, which has since dissipated. It didn’t go past the script stage, and, at least for now, it appears unlikely that the show would be shopped elsewhere.
The news, which Cage confirmed to Variety, comes as Peacock has started production on their Joe Exotic limited series starring Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin and John Cameron Mitchell as Joe Exotic.
The story in the Imagine/CBS Studios show, written by American Vandal showrunner Dan Lagana, centered around Joe Shreibvogel (Cage), an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park...

Amazon’s “Tiger King” series that would have starred Nicolas Cage as Joe Exotic has been scrapped, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The series was one of two scripted takes based on the Netflix docuseries. Peacock also has its own version on the story of Joe Schreibvogel (aka “Joe Exotic”) starring Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell.
In an interview with Variety, Cage expanded on the decision: “I read two excellent scripts, which I did think were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it come together. NBCUniversal's Joe Exotic series is moving along swimmingly.
The series has cast John Cameron Mitchell in the titular role of Joe "Exotic" Schreibvogel in the limited series, which is in the works at NBC, USA Network, and NBC Universal's streaming service, Peacock.
Mitchell is probably best known for writing and starring in Broadway's Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
"I'm thrilled to take on the role of this modern folk antihero," Mitchell said.
"Joe and I are the same age and like him, I grew up queer in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas so I feel like I know a little bit about this guy and his desperate attempt to conquer an inhospitable world."
Kate McKinnon is on board to play Carole Baskin.
The series will center around Baskin, Exotic, and the tigers they famously tussled over. The insanity begins when Baskin learns that her sworn nemesis is breeding and using his menagerie for profit.

It was showtime for Catherine O’Hara on the Tony Awards red carpet Sunday night.
The actress, 65, showed up at Radio City Musical Hall for Broadway’s biggest night wearing a black and white stripe gown reminiscent of one her character Delia Deetz wore in the 1988 comedy classic, Beetlejuice.
Of course, the choice was intentional, as O’Hara is at the Tony Awards to introduce a production number from the musical adaptation of Beetlejuice, which is up for eight trophies including Best Musical at Sunday’s show.

Refresh for updates The lush, very-downtown musical Hadestown topped the Tony Awards nominations list with 14, with the more traditional jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud coming in at second with 12, a one-two punch as clear a sign as any that Tony voters are in a very expansive mood this year.
At #3, Tootsie has 11 nominations; The Ferryman 9 and Beetlejuice 8.
But the big surprise were the no-votes in the Best Play category for both To Kill A Mockingbird and Network, particularly for Aaron Sorkin’s gloriously reviewed and wildly popular adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel. That omission might be the single biggest Tony snub in years, if not decades.
Deadline will examine that omission and other surprises in a complete analysis of the Tony nominations by Deadline theater critic Greg Evans, coming shortly. Check back soon.

Scott Brown, the newly U.S. ambassador to New Zealand, confirmed that he had been investigated and cautioned by the State Department for remarks he made to women attending an official July event in Samoa, an independent nation that also falls under his purview. According to the Guardian, the former Republican senator from Massachusetts had told several female attendees at the Peace Corps reception that they looked “beautiful” and could “make hundreds of dollars” in the U.S. hospitality industry. Brown, an earlier supporter of President Donald Trump who was among his first ambassadorial appointees, said that he had “no idea” that people.

It's amazing to see how some people careers progress. In this case I am talking about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The former WWE superstar who's first match came in 1996 at Survivor Series at Madison Square Garden. His film debut came in The Mummy Returns in 2001 and since then he has taken the film industry by storm doing films like Walking Tall and joining the Fast and the Furious crew all the way to being The Tooth Fairy. With future films already in the works like Rampage and a future role as DC Comic's Black Adam, it is safe to say that Johnson isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
If wrestling and movies weren't enough, Johnson alongside Dany Garcia are expanding their production company known as Seven Bucks Productions. Variety is reporting that using their digital arm called Seven Bucks Digital Studios and in partnership with Studio71, Seven Bucks Productions has launched it's first-ever pilot program.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Lin-Manuel Miranda are two of the most likeable stars in the entertainment business and collaborative partners for the successful new movie Moana. What’s next for Hollywood’s most charming duo? Apparently, it’s a mini-musical about millennials, with YouTuber Meg DeAngelis in the starring role.
Johnson and Miranda have grabbed all the headlines related to Millennials: The Musical, but at the same time, the creative talent associated with Millennials consists mostly of up-and-coming artists, many of whom have ties to the online video community. The project’s director, Scott Brown, is known for web series like Blue Movies and Destroy The Alpha Gammas. Sonya Belousova, who co-wrote the music and lyrics, is the force behind the keys for Player Piano. DeAngelis, the star of Millennials, has 5.5 million subscribers on her YouTube channel, and many other creators (including Flula, who has a small role) join her in the cast.

When stuck in traffic on Los Angeles' infamous Interstate 405, drivers and their passengers have plenty of spare time to develop elaborate stories. That idea lays the groundwork for Gridlocked, a new web series directed by Scott Brown.
The seven episodes that together make up Gridlocked are all separate vignettes that take place in the same traffic jam. While each installment is woven into the ones that precede and follow it, the stories are able to stand on their own. The main constant, aside from the traffic jam setting, is actor Zach Gold, who plays multiple characters and shows up in each episode.
Brown and Gold previously collaborated on Stockholm, a web series driven by its dark sense of humor. Compared to that show, Gridlocked is considerably lighter, and often turns to broader humor, but its wild script and out-there characters ensure that the end product is a fun one.

The playwright Thomas Bradshaw isn’t much interested in your pleasure, but he sure seems to enjoy your discomfort. Sex, violence, humiliation, and racism are not just themes for him; they’re stage directions. In works like Purity, Southern Promises, The Bereaved, and Burning, he took explicitness of all kinds to a level guaranteed to cause walkouts or worse. Scott Brown, writing for Vulture about The New Group’s production of Burning in 2011, used the words “turgid,” “psychopathic,” and “wartlike.” They fall short in describing Intimacy, Bradshaw’s followup provocation, also at the New Group. After all, Burning was merely (as the director of both, Scott Elliot, writes in a program note) “a seminal experience.” Intimacy, especially from the front row, is that and more. There aren’t many bodily fluids (or body parts) left unrepresented in Intimacy. (Props to the props folks, who should definitely win the Obie for Best Ejaculating Prosthetic Penis.

A year ago at around this period of the year, Celtic fans were looking forward to the knockout round of the Champions League, something that no one thought we could achieve given the group we were in. Celtic managed to achieve two unthinkable results so far in the group, an away win at Moscow ending their long run of losses in group stage European football, and a legendary win at home to Barcelona, and in the end finishing on 10 points – a record high for us in the modern Champions League.
However, things are much different now – we are out of the group after 3 consecutive losses to Ajax, Milan and Barcelona, finishing fourth in a similar group of death to last year’s.
Celtic’s loss of crucial first-team players in the summer, in particular Gary Hooper, has been the main talking point in the media and with Celtic fans.

Texas teenager Ethan Couch was sentenced to 10 years of probation after drinking and driving, causing a car wreck that left four individuals dead.
Ethan Couch To Years 10 Years Probation
The prosecution fought for Couch to get the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. During the sentencing trial the defense counter-argued that Cough is merely a victim of his wealth. Couch’s lawyers cutely titled his affliction “affluenza” – referring to the consequence-free upbringing he’s been subjected to by his wealthyparents.
Aiding the defense was expert witness G. Dick Miller, who specializes in psychology. Miller suggested that Couch’s parents bear more responsibility in the matter than the 16-year-old, alleging that the privileged childhood of their son resulted in his recklessness. He further argued that Couch receiving a couple years of treatment away from his parents could give him a chance to rehabilitate.

"There is nothing the judge could have done...

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas scored the only goal in a well-contested clash between the Catalan giants and the Scottish Premier League Champions.
The first-half was one-way traffic as expected. Barcelona had the lion’s share of possession, but failed to break through the resilient Celtic defence.
Time and time again the Spanish side had their attacks broken down in the final third, and resorted to playing direct football which was easily dealt with by the Glasgow outfit.
After both sides went into the break level, the game proceeded to open up in the second half as Celtic started to push for a winning goal.
However, the hosts were reduced to 10-men on the hour mark after Scott Brown was shown a straight red card for a off the ball incident with Barcelona forward Neymar.

Coulda – woulda – shoulda…didn’t…Another heart-breaking night in Paradise. I presume you’ve seen the game; if you haven’t, don’t bother.
Over the weekend, I was up in Lake Tahoe, where I completed the Emerald Bay half-marathon - in my Hoops. A good omen, I thought. I awoke this morning thinking Messi the Messiah is injured. Hallelujah! The drive down to the pub was a series of green lights – no yellows or reds. Another great sign. After being kicked out of the League Cup last week – to Morton – with a whimper, I knew the players would bring it for Barcelona and be firing on all cylinders. I always think if the wee teams we played wore Barca, Milan or Man U jerseys, we would win every game! Anyway, this morning, I had faith. Celtic Park on European nights is something that everyone should experience; the fans become the 12th man – or tonight,...

Wayne Rooney is a surprise inclusion in the England squad for their clash with “The Auld Enemy” on Wednesday night.
The want-away United striker has played a mere 45 minutes in pre-season, and major questions will be asked whether a player with so little game time should have been included.
Aside from “Wazza”, it’s a vital preparation game for Roy Hodgson ahead of FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month. He’ll also have a chance to blood 31-year-old striker Rickie Lambert, the Southampton star who scored 15 Premier League goals last season is yet to be capped for England.
Scotland, under new manager Gordon Strachan, have been going well of late, winning 1-0 in Croatia courtesy of a Robert Snodgrass strike. It’ll be a chance for the former Liverpool manager to try out certain players, with international debuts expected for Brighton and Hove Albion’s defender Gordon Greer and Dundee...

Scott Brown is certainly having an interesting post-Senate career. First there was the truly bizarre night when he may have drunkenly tweeted "Bqhatevwr" in the middle of the night, then he joined Fox News as a contributor and guest-hosted for Bill O'Reilly, and now his own brother has been arrested for impersonating a police officer. Bruce Browne (he added the extra e) was, according to Wcvb, "wearing military-style clothing and carrying a gun."...

Depending on how you look at it, Damon Lindelof saying he’s “turned off by [the] destruction porn that has emerged” is either like a junkie agreeing to rehab or the pusher lamenting all the damned drugs that are making him rich. Depending on how you look at it, it’s either a bold declaration from a power player or a cool statement of reality from another wheel in the machine. Depending on how you look at it, it’s either brave or hypocritical. Scott Brown at Vulture challenged Lindelof to give the summer studio treatment to a famously intimate tale — that of John Henry beating the steam engine — and alongside the story hurdle, the writer expounded on the current nature of big budget filmmaking. It’s a topic everyone seems keen to wax on and off about these days, but if Steven Spielberg speaking ironically about giant budgets taking over was the lament of Dr. Frankenstein...

Noted web series creator Scott Brown is back. When we last heard from the one time Streamy nominee, he was bringing dark humor to the slasher genre with Stockholm. For his next act, Brown is exploring the world of petty, superficial sororities. He is the creative mind behind Destroy The Alpha Gammas, a collegiate musical with an attitude. With its musical heart and young cast, Destroy The Alpha Gammas is immediately reminiscent of Glee, although its trailer is sure to remind each viewer that "you're not in glee club anymore." Instead, the series takes place at a university, where two rival sororities will do everything they can to make each others' lives miserable. I'm expecting the opening scene of West Side Story mixed with a collegiate version of Mean Girls. Actress and pop singer Leah McKendrick wrote the script, and she also stars as Carrie, the leader of the less popular Delta Pi sorority.

The Civilians, New York City's premier investigative theater company, have tackled such thorny subjects as urban redevelopment in the Bloomberg era (In the Footprint) and the practical limits of political idealism (Paris Commune), proving in the process that edifying documentary stage art needn't be propagandistic, didactic, or a drag. (The secret: They're excellent guerrilla journalists, getting extraordinary candor from deceptively ordinary interviewees.) This weekend, in the always unsettling environs of Fort Greene's Irondale Center — a converted church with atmosphere to spare — they'll take on the big enchilada: death. Be the Death of Me is the result of the Civs' research into the great beyond, which, remarkably, hasn't gotten the docu-theater treatment yet — or even a decent oral history, really. In a brief interview with New York theater critic Scott Brown, company founder Steve Cosson talked about the legacy of AIDS panic, getting an interview with a real...

Tonight the drama is not about Freys vs. Starkes or Joan vs. Peggy. All that can wait, because tonight is about Kinky Boots vs. Matilda, Hanks vs. Lane, and the rest of the battles of the 2013 Tony Awards. The always dependable Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the proceedings on CBS, but here at Vulture two far more opinionated minds will be narrating the show: Critics Scott Brown and Jesse Green are live-blogging the whole Tonycast, giving their expert take on who earned their victory, who got snubbed, and what it all means for the state of theater today. We loved Writer/Director Scott Brown's first series, Blue Movies, a slickly-written comedy that ended up nominated for a Streamy Award in 2010. His follow-up, Asylum, wasn't half bad either. Now, Brown has returned with Stockholm, a dark, droll romp about a serial killer's relationship with his potential victim. The series is being hosted on Blip and the first two episodes dropped today. Zach Gold (a frequent Brown actor who got to play the porno version of The Joker in Blue Movies) plays the male lead with newcomer Brittani Noel as his female counterpart

The pyschological drama genre remains a font for indie filmmakers looking to explore deep character arcs without the expectations of some of the pricier genres. Asylum premiered last night in Hollywood at Cinespace, a venue fast becoming the city’s Cbgb’s of web series, to a capacity crowd of supporters. Not a bad foot to start a show off on. The big question however is will this indie have the muster to break through? A week ago I opined that this might be this year’s Compulsions, with its similar genre, release timing and early indie buzz. Now having watched the full six-episode opening season of Asylum, the comp still holds water, meaning we might see a nom or two come awards season here. At the onset, we are taken inside St. Dympna Hospital for the Criminally Insane, a tired, state-funded outfit badly overlooked by any sort of authority.

Hard to believe it’s already been a year since Bernie Su’s twisted character drama Compulsions bowed online. The 8-episode series, which bowed in time to qualify for awards season, netted four Streamy Award nominations and Su took home the Streamy for Best Writing. Now as the final month of 2010 is upon us, another dark indie drama is set to walk on the web stage this month. Asylum, from creator Dan Williams and director Scott Brown (Blue Movies) has already turned heads with its trailer (below) that made it an official selection at this fall’s New York Television Festival (Nytvf) and the Anaheim International Film Festival (Aiff). The apocalyptic end of the world drama is such a played out subgenre that there’s nothing left to do but make fun of it. And if you’re Woody Tondorf making fun of things is what you do best. This is after all the same guy that created one of YouTube’s most popular scripted comedy web series Elevator, that racked up over 20 million views in its 3-year run. Tondorf's latest comedy is aiming to do just that. Apocalypse Wow released their first trailer later yesterday evening, after screening it down at Comic-Con in San Diego last month. As of now the project is just a pilot episode and trailer, produced on what Tondorf says is “a tiny spec budget” in hopes of luring in investors or one of the online studios or networks to pick up the series. Tondorf teamed up with Blue Movies creator Scott Brown, who directed the promo episodes,...

Continuing a busy Monday of news from the world of web series, the New York Television Festival (Nytvf) announced its official selections today for the Manhattan-based festival for independent television heading into its six year. The festival will take place in Manhattan September 20-25 at Tribeca Cinemas and the Sva Theater. Web series are once again increasingly a part of the independent television landscape, with a number of the pilots up for competition in this year’s festival having emerged online or planned for an internet release. Some notable standouts are a new comedy series from 2009 Nytvf winner Al Thompson (Johnny B Homeless) called Baby Daddy Memoirs and Blue Movies’ Scott Brown’s sophomore series Asylum from creator Dan Williams (see trailer above). Also making the cut this year are a number of existing web series like Solo, 9Am Meeting, The Bear, The Cloud and God, Greg & Donny, Copy & Pastry,...

Tucked away in an alley of downtown La, behind two intimidating buildings with "American Apparel" emblazoned on their sides, Central City Studio is hidden away behind a factory facade with a gigantic crane parked in front of it. If I hadn't known I was looking for a production and recognized what I knew to be a grip truck parked near the crane, I wouldn't even be aware there was a fully-functioning hospital set located within the building. The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...
