Whistle, the youth-focused distributor and creator of sports content, has acquired New Form, the Ron Howard and Brian Grazer-backed media company, both companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The deal comes after Whistle raised $28 million in Series D funding last year, including an investment from Jeffrey Katzenberg’s WndrCo. Both companies have made several new content deals recently, with Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media creating a new documentary series for Whistle and New Form adding the Sofia Vergara-produced “365 Days of Love” documentary series to Facebook Watch. The merger allows Whistle, which says it has an audience of 518 million subscribers and followers, to double down on its bet on original series and scale its business.
“It was a great match from the start. Both companies excel at discovering emerging narratives and storytelling,” John West, Whistle’s CEO and founder, said in a statement.

In an ostensibly strange pairing, sports purveyor Whistle has acquired New Form, an early digital studio backed by Discovery, ITV, Ron Howard, and Brian Grazer that made a name for itself via premium scripted projects -- like Mr. Student Body President -- created in collaboration with top YouTube stars.
On the heels of the transaction, the aforementioned companies and entertainment luminaries will become stakeholders in Whistle. New Form CEO Kathleen Grace will remain on board and continue to produce and develop new works, reporting to Whistle president Michael Cohen. All productions currently in the works at New Form will proceed as planned.
While Whistle reps creators like Dude Perfect and creates original content in the sports space, it says it plans to expand its portfolio through the acquisition of New Form, which most recently announced a year-long Facebook Watch docuseries with Sofia Vergara called 365 Days of Love. Kathleen Grace, CEO of digital entertainment studio New Form, has announced a slew of mid-year promotions, Tubefilter has exclusively learned.
The promotions arrive on the heels of an unspecified number of layoffs tendered by New Form last month, when the company said it would shift its focus away from releasing content on its proprietary social channels and toward selling productions to third-party platforms, including digital distributors like YouTube Red and Go90 as well as linear outlets like TBS. Digital producers cheered last year when the Television Academy expanded its short-form programming categories. But then they saw the nominees and winners.
Most of last year’s short form contenders didn’t come from digital-first producers or platforms, but came from traditional networks and talent. Adult Swim’s “Childrens Hospital” led all nominees, followed by the History channel’s “The Crossroads of History” and AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462.”
“Childrens Hospital” ultimately won the Outstanding Series category, which included just one independent contender: “Her Story,” about two transgender women living in Los Angeles. Besides “Crossroads of History” and “Flight 462,” the two other nominees were behind-the-scenes looks at popular TV shows: “Hack into Broad City” and “UnREAL The Auditions.”
In the short form nonfiction or reality series, another marketing series won, FX’s “Inside Look: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”

Akana cited Cho’s career as the inspiration behind her own impressive one as actress, comedian, writer and producer — which all stems from her 1.5 million YouTube subscribers. “It is all thanks to seeing that one face on the screen that looked like mine.”

Akana cited Cho’s career as the inspiration behind her own impressive one as actress, comedian, writer and producer — which all stems from her 1.5 million YouTube subscribers. “It is all thanks to seeing that one face on the screen that looked like mine.”

New Form Digital’s time-rewinding special is getting ready for its close-up. The digital studio whose founding partners include Ron Howard and Discovery Communications has released a trailer for RePlay one day prior to the show’s premiere on mobile video platform Go90.
RePlay will star Lyndsy Fonseca, whose credits include the daughter in How I Met Your Mother, as a DJ named Allison who experiences deja vu on the night she celebrates her 25th birthday. After the party goes awry, Allison is sent back in time to experience the day over and over “until she can get [it] right.” Groundhog Day fans who read that plot description may feel some deja vu of their own, and based on RePlay’s trailer, that feeling is merited. There are a lot of similarities between New Form’s upcoming project and the 1993 Bill Murray comedy.

Joining Fonseca in the cast will be Tyler James Williams, Cyrina Fiallo, and YouTube star Mamrie Hart, whose respective characters will present Allison with important choices as she runs back her big day. Through a new deal, New Form Digital will soon be expanding its production opportunities. The digital studio from Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Discovery Communications has entered into an exclusive partnership with Is or Isn’t Entertainment from Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky.
Under the pact, New Form will become the sole digital production partner of Is or Isn’t Entertainment. The two companies are already working together on two projects set for spring 2015 production. One of the upcoming New Form/Is or Isn’t offerings is the Shitty Boyfriends series from writer Jessica Cabot about a feminist cartoonist trying to find love. The story of the second series is yet to be announced.
Kudrow and Bucatinsky are already familiar with the online video world. The duo worked on the popular Web Therapy web series for Lexus’ L/Studio platform. Showtime picked up extended episodes of the series in 2011 while it continued to run online.

In October, New Form Digital--the content studio launched by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Discovery Communications--debuted 14 short films, each one helmed by a different YouTube content creator. At the time, New Form Chief Content Officer Kathleen Grace explained the next step was to "turn these projects into series."
For two of the shorts, that goal has now been achieved. New Form has struck a deal with Vimeo that will bring four new series to Vimeo On Demand, including one based on Sawyer Hartman's "Parallax" and another based on Pj Ligouri (aka KickThePJ)'s "Oscar's Hotel."
Parallax and Oscar's Hotel will both run for ten episodes and will pick up where their respective entries in the incubator series left off. Apollo 13 meets Here Comes Honey Boo Boo? Hard to say yet what might come from the venture, called New Form, that unites the Hollywood creative team — plus lawyer Craig Jacobson, TV exec Ed Wilson, agent Jim Wiatt, film exec Michael Rosenberg and CAA — with pay TV’s leading producer of non-fiction programming. There’s no word on terms of the arrangements, including how much cash is behind New Form. Kathleen Grace will be chief creative officer of the La-based operation. Her mission, the companies say, is to develop “high-quality, scripted and unscripted programming for today’s digital viewers” — and to create alliances with “key distribution partners and brands.” Digital productions typically have low budgets, and generate low revenues on the Internet, but the ones from New Form have a “possibility of expanded distribution across Discovery and partner platforms globally.” The announcement comes ahead of Discovery’s upfront presentation today in NYC,...

The New York space will be built in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood and is scheduled for an October 2014 release. As with the other three spaces, it will provide production studios, classes, and events for both aspiring and established YouTubers. "We want to invest in partners who built channels on the platform," said Kathleen Grace, manager of production and programming for YouTube's La space, "It's part-hippy commune, incubator and studio." As with the La space, there will be many opportunities for YouTubers to collaborate, network, and, since this is New York, complain about the subway.

The turnout was spectacular. The best and brightest of online video filled the open air patio at the Cedar Door, an Austin classic just a block away from the Convention Center. Check-ins on Foursquare unlocked the "Valley Girl Margarita," a potent take on the Door's classic Mexican Martini. Free beer, great weather, and killer soft tacos made for a great evening enjoyed by all (free food Ftw). SXSW Keynote speaker Felicia Day stopped in along with new media uber-agent George Ruiz, Diggnation's Alex Albrecht and Zadi Diaz of Epic Fu. Next New Networks announced today the latest batch of shows to be accepted into their Next New Creators program. Created in 2009, the program is designed to assist independent creators as they create, distribute, promote, package and monetize their web series. The shows vary widely from girls-to-guys dating advice show The Wing Girls to two cooking shows to be added to the Hungry Nation food network: film and music video director Tamra Davis' Tamra Davis Cooking Show and Rossella Rago’s Cooking with Nonna. Joining the Barely Political network, which already houses the wildly popular The Key of Awesome, is the animated sketch pop-culture comedy series Landline TV.
