“Survivor” debuted on CBS as a summer program on May 31, 2000. Hosted by Jeff Probst since the very beginning, it is credited by many as starting the reality show craze that has been a major part of TV this century. After being on the air for two decades, 20 of the most iconic champions returned in Season 40’s “Winners at War” to compete in the first-ever all-winners season. Following a temporary delay due to Covid-19, the reality TV show continued with even more twists and turns, plus more diversity amongst its cast members. Tour our updated “Survivor” winners list above (or click here for direct access) that highlights everyone from Season 1’s Richard Hatch to the most recent.

Outwit, outplay, outlast. The basic formula for competing on “Survivor” hasn’t changed since the reality series made its debut on May 31, 2000. Contestants continue to be divided into tribes and forced to form a new society as they adapt to their physical and social surroundings. Players still have to compete in challenges, build their social game and face the elements and hear host Jeff Probst yell his signature phrases like “You gotta dig deep!” and “Wanna know what you’re playing for?” — and they still have to look into his eyes while he utters the dreaded phrase “The tribe has spoken.”
While the essential gameplay of “Survivor” hasn’t changed throughout 44 seasons played over 23 years, the game certainly has evolved. A myriad of new twists and advantages, the 39-day format shortened to 26 days, and the evolution of the contestants themselves have led to the long-running series having...

Makeup brands often advertise their products as long-lasting and waterproof, and while most are lies, some live up to the hype. Like every other show, Survivor does product placement, some more subtle than others. However, the show indirectly ended up giving one beauty brand a free promo after a contestant’s eyeliner lasted the whole month she was there.

Exclusive: Bobby Bones-fronted social experiment Snake In The Grass won’t be returning to USA Network.
The NBCUniversal cable network has cancelled the reality series after one season.
It comes after the broadcaster renewed Blake Shelton and Carson Daly’s Barmageddon for a second season after it became its best series premiere in nearly three years.
Snake In The Grass and Barmageddon were both part of USA Network’s latest unscripted slate, which was unveiled last May. The slate also included Race To Survive Alaska, from Deadliest Catch producer Original Productions, which is launching in April.
Snake in the Grass saw groups of four strangers who are dropped into the wild with a chance to win $100,000. In order to win, the team had to figure out which one of them is the Snake – a saboteur who is secretly undermining the group every step of the way.

Survivor champ and The Challenge: USA winner Sarah Lacina called out Tony Vlachos for his real job as a police officer, eventually leading to one of the most successful alliances in franchise history, Cops-R-Us. During a recent interview, the Game Changers winner admitted production played a role in helping her discover Tony’s true identity.
Sarah Lacina reveals how producers helped her identify Tony Vlachos as a cop
Speaking to podcast Challenge Mania during a February 2023 appearance, Iowa-based investigator Sarah Lacina noticed Tony Vlachos during casting and felt he looked, dressed, and walked like a cop.
Additionally, Sarah recalled him repeatedly getting brought up in her interviews and realized producers “lit up” when she identified him as a police officer, clueing her in. When asked about using production as an edge in the game, the Iowa native noted she used her Cagayan experience with them to help her game in subsequent seasons.

Daniel Strunk is refreshingly honest about his chances as one of the new contestants on “Survivor 42.” The 30-year-old, who is currently working as a law clerk for a federal judge in Michigan, admits that he doesn’t have the usual attributes that would lend themselves to a successful “Survivor” player. “Las Vegas should not be betting on me,” he jokes in his CBS interview. “I’m short, a little bit chunky, I don’t know if I’ll be able to do well in challenges, I don’t know if I’ll be able to provide around camp. I’m gonna try!” (watch below).
Daniel does have some good qualities that lend themselves to “Survivor,” though, noting that his high school government teacher got him into law, which prepared him in some ways for this game. As he discusses, “I’m obviously a sneaky person. I’m well-educated. I’ll try to be goofy.

“Survivor 42” castaway Hai Giang has already had to survive a great deal in his life before even stepping onto the island. Jonathan Penner‘s wife Stacy Beth Title has died of Als at age 56. The three-time “Survivor” player tweeted the sad news on Monday. Title was an Oscar-nominated director for “Down on the Waterfront” who continued to work after her diagnosis in 2017. “Survivor” fans will remember Title from her two appearances on the reality TV show. She visited her husband during the “Cook Islands” loved ones reward in 2006 (watch above), and the couple appeared virtually for a “CBS Cares” profile about Als during “Winners at War” in 2020 (watch below).

(Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the Season 40 finale of “Survivor.”)
The 40th season of “Survivor,” a.k.a. “Survivor: Winners at War,” came to a close with a supersized finale on Wednesday that saw one competitor walk away with a $2 million check and become the long-running CBS competition’s newest two-time “Sole Survivor. “
Tony Vlachos was the player with the honor of winning “Winners at War,” having previously been crowned the champion of Season 28, “Survivor: Cagayan.”
“Survivor: Winners at War” featured 20 legendary winners from the first 39 seasons of “Survivor” returning to compete against each other in the 20th anniversary edition of the competition. These winners included Vlachos, Natalie Anderson, Tyson Apostol, Danni Boatwright, Sophie Georgina Clarke, Jeremy Collins, Sandra Diaz-Twine, Ben Driebergen, Michele Fitzgerald, Wendell Holland, Adam Klein, Yul Kwon, Sarah Lacina, Amber Mariano, “Boston” Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Denise Stapley, Nick Wilson and Ethan Zohn.

It seems like only yesterday the 20 returning “Survivor” champions returned for an epic clash in “Winners at War,” but now we’ve already reached the Season 40 finale. Heading into Wednesday’s three-hour event, only five castaways remained in the running to win the $2 million prize: Ben Driebergen, Denise Stapley, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina and Tony Vlachos. But there were 14 players living on the Edge of Extinction who were itching for their chance to return to the game: Natalie Anderson, Amber Mariano, Danni Boatwright, Ethan Zohn, Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow, Yul Kwon, Wendell Holland, Adam Klein, Tyson Apostol, Sophie Clarke, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Jeremy Collins and Nick Wilson. The 20th contestant, Sandra Diaz-Twine, quit after being voted out on Day 16.

You love Tony Vlachos, and CBS knows it. This winner of “Survivor: Cagayan” is the only castaway who gets a special shout-out in the preview trailer for Wednesday’s two-hour penultimate episode, and for good reason: Tony is simply killing it on “Survivor: Winners at War.” His endless idol-hunting, social-scheming, challenge-winning and tree-hiding have made him the reason to keep watching Season 40 as we near the end (the finale is scheduled for May 13). Last week after Sophie Clarke‘s shocking blindside, the Top 8 contestants of “Survivor: Winners at War” were determined: Jeremy Collins, Ben Driebergen, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Denise Stapley, Tony Vlachos and Nick Wilson. With so much infighting and mistrust between the remaining players, there was no telling who might be eliminated this week. So how did everything play out, and whose torch did Jeff Probst snuff at the end of the hour?

Who would have thought going into “Survivor: Winners at War” that Tony Vlachos would be a frontrunner to take home another victory? His chaotic gameplay in “Survivor: Cagayan” was a perfect confluence of events that led to a (somewhat) unexpected win and it seemed unlikely he would ever be able to replicate such success in future seasons. That much was clear when he returned for “Survivor: Game Changers,” where he immediately became a target after running around the jungle doing all of his classic Tony antics and was voted out in the season premiere. Now, the 46-year-old police officer has switched up his game a bit and found himself a real contender to actually win this current all-winners season. Let’s look at four reasons why Tony deserves to win “Survivor: Winners at War.”

Every week “Survivor” host Jeff Probst analyzes the most recent happenings on “Winners at War,” and this time around he focused on Wendell Holland being voted out of Wednesday’s merge episode. “I thought Wendell had a little swagger this season, and I think it worked against him,” Probst declared in this week’s video recap (watch above). Wendell was ousted by a 9-3 vote over Adam Klein, so he now must live on the Edge of Extinction and await his chance to return to the game.

The rules are simple. If you find fire tokens on the Edge of Extinction, you can buy advantages in the all-important “Survivor” return challenge. Unfortunately for Yul Kwon, he was the only voted-out player who didn’t get the opportunity to acquire any island currency, and people are understandably bummed. (Read our episode recap here.)
As this is the first season ever to incorporate fire tokens, there are obviously kinks in the system that need to be worked out for future installments. Notably, why does making it further in the game, as Yul did, essentially punish him from earning an advantage in the return challenge? Just last week there was a fire token goose chase in which four wooden coins were hidden up on the cliff. That meant double eliminees Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine (had she not quit) had a golden opportunity to find fire tokens alongside the people...

“I’m captive right now, but I’m plotting a way to escape this wretched prison that they call the Edge of Extinction,” declared Wendell Holland just moments after his elimination from “Survivor: Winners at War.” This former winner of “Survivor: Ghost Island” was voted out of the newly merged Koru tribe by a 9-3 vote over Adam Klein. “Once I get out of here I’m gonna do what I need to do,” Wendell promised in his end-of-show exit interview. “The war is not over.”

Adam Klein continues to be the no. 1 most predicted boot on “Survivor: Winners at War.” The 28-year-old “Millennials vs. Gen X” champion has had a difficult road to the merge, ticking off allies and having plans backfire in his face. The highly anticipated “Survivor” return challenge is coming up soon, which means one of the inhabitants at the Edge of Extinction is about to re-enter the game for a shot at winning the $2 million prize. With Sandra Diaz-Twine calling it quits last week, there are currently eight voted-out castaways living on Extinction Island: Natalie Anderson, Amber Mariano, Danni Boatwright, Ethan Zohn, Tyson Apostol, Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow and Yul Kwon. However, thanks to Season 40’s new fire token twist, both Boston Rob and Natalie might have an edge — pardon the pun — in the return challenge because of their growing piggy banks.

Heading into Wednesday’s seventh episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” Gold Derby readers predicted that the two castaways most in danger of being voted out were Adam Klein of Yara and Yul Kwon of Sele. With only 12 players still in game proper, who was the ninth castaway to have their torch snuffed? Meanwhile, with the Edge of Extinction return challenge on the horizon, the eight voted-out players were gearing up to re-enter the competition — but was the pressure too much for Sandra Diaz-Twine, as host Jeff Probst hinted last week?

“Survivor: Winners at War” sees 20 winners return to duke it out. It’s the greatest crop of contenders the game has ever seen. In my weekly “Battlelines” recap I will diagnose the casualty and declare who I think won the episode’s battle and who is best positioned to win the war. Please feel free to give me your thoughts in the comments below.
Casualties
A pair of Queens flushed out of the game
It was a brutal week in “Survivor” as two of the game’s greatest characters and players were voted out: Sandra Diaz-Twine and Parvati Shallow. Both were returning winners in season 20 for “Heroes vs. Villains” and we’re able to snag 1st and 2nd place respectively. So, what went wrong for these “Survivor” legends?
I’ll start with Sandra. Let me quickly say, going into this season I thought she was the greatest “Survivor” player of all time.

Adam Klein is likely to be the first champion from a recent season to be voted out of “Survivor: Winners at War,” according to Gold Derby odds. Season 40 has already been an old school slaughter as we’ve seen legend after legend like Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine voted out one after another, while no winner from Season 30 or later has gotten their torch snuffed. Predictors here at Gold Derby think we will finally see a new school winner voted out on Wednesday night’s episode.

After six episodes of “Survivor: Winners at War,” two castaways are tied with a leading four fire tokens apiece: Michele Fitzgerald and Natalie Anderson. (See the updated list of “Survivor” advantages.) These wooden coins can be used to purchase things like food, comfort and advantages, as seen this week when Tyson Apostol bought peanut butter with his newly acquired fire token. Michele and Natalie are now essentially billionaires in the game of “Survivor,” which makes them huge targets going forward.
Michele began the double elimination episode with only a single fire token, but after her best buddy Parvati Shallow was voted out, she bequeathed her remaining three fire tokens to Michele. “Here you go, Michele, enjoy,” Parvati said on her way to the Edge of Extinction. Heading into Wednesday’s double elimination episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” Gold Derby readers predicted that the castaways most in danger of being voted out were Adam Klein and Parvati Shallow. These two placed at the bottoms of their Yara and Sele tribes, respectively, following last week’s tribe swap, while Sandra Diaz-Twine was the likeliest to go home from Dakal. So who were the seventh and eighth castaways to have their torches snuffed by Jeff Probst?

“Survivor: Winners at War” is about to send two castaways to the Edge of Extinction, according to the previews. Only one tribe will win immunity, sending two to Tribal Council where they will each vote somebody out. Gold Derby odds predict that Adam Klein of the Yara tribe and Parvati Shallow of the Sele tribe will be the unfortunate victims of this week’s episode. Both have been in precarious situations so far this season and it looks like they both might miss out on the coming merge at the last minute.
Adam currently has 15/2 odds of being booted, say our Gold Derby prognosticators. Adam started off “Survivor: Winners at War” on the wrong foot by scurrying off with Denise Stapley on Day 1, which made him an early target, and it’s been a rough go since. He then made things worse by playing both sides in Episode 3, where he narrowly survived by one vote.

Get ready for the first double elimination of “Survivor” Season 40. Host Jeff Probst breaks the bad news to the 14 remaining castaways in the latest “Winners at War” preview trailer (watch above). “Only the first tribe wins immunity,” he tells the three groups before their immunity challenge. “Both of the losing tribes will vote somebody out of this game.” Last week the Dakal and Sele tribes prevailed at the immunity challenge and only the third tribe, Yara, had to visit tribal council. That’s not the case this week.

“Survivor” host Jeff Probst is praising exes Michele Fitzgerald and Wendell Holland for “not hiding” the story of their relationship on “Winners at War” (watch above). The couple met as part of the “Survivor” community after winning their individuals seasons — “Kaoh Rong” for her, “Ghost Island” for him. They soon dated, but things didn’t work out so they called it quits. Flash-forward to this year, where the exes are now competing against each other for the $2 million prize. For 11 days Michele and Wendell had no communication as they played on opposite tribes, but thanks to Wednesday’s tribe swap, they are now living together on the same beach.

When “Survivor” premiered on May 31, 2000 it was unlike anything seen before on American television and no one anticipated it’d still be going strong 20 years later with a legendary 40th season. In order to keep its large audience returning year after year and to maintain an element of surprise with the contestants, the show has undergone a number of transformations and injected countless “twists” into the game format. Tribe swaps, hidden idols, legacy advantages, exile island and fire tokens are just some of the phrases we’ve come to associate with the show. Here we detail 14 of the show’s most jaw-dropping twists that changed the game forever (see above).

Rob Mariano may be one of the most well-known “Survivor” players of all time, but that wasn’t enough to save him from an early exit on “Winners at War.” As Gold Derby predicted, Boston Rob became the sixth person voted out of Season 40 during Wednesday’s tribe swap episode after he found himself on the new Yara beach with two former enemies (Ben Driebergen and Adam Klein) and two complete strangers (Sarah Lacina and Sophie Clarke). After having his torch snuffed, Rob bequeathed his two fire tokens to his best buddy Parvati Shallow, bumping her up to four total. That number now ties her with Natalie Anderson, making Parvati and Natalie the richest players in the game.

Heading into Wednesday’s fifth episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” Gold Derby readers predicted that the castaways most in danger of being voted out were Rob Mariano, Adam Klein and Parvati Shallow. These three were at the bottom of their Sele tribe following the recent eliminations of Danni Boatwright and Ethan Zohn. However, a tribe swap was on the horizon for all 15 players still in the game. It’s looking like the end of the road for the Robfather, according to Gold Derby users. “Boston” Rob Mariano is being predicted as the next boot on “Survivor: Winners at War,” following this season’s first tribe swap. On this week’s episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” the 15 champions still in the game will face the first tribe swap of the season, an event that can save those at the bottom of their current tribes or even tank the chances of another player at the top of theirs. After three episodes and four tribal councils on “Survivor: Winners at War,” the 40th season in 20 years of the landmark reality TV competition series, the Dakal tribe has established itself as the dominant tribe, forcing the opposing Sele tribe to vote out three players while only having to sacrifice one of their own (Amber Mariano). In part two of the season premiere Dakal went to their only tribal council where they stuck mostly together as a tribe to eliminate Amber, leaving Kim Spradlin-Wolfe in the dark about their decision to split the votes between the two women.
