Tom Johnson, who received two Emmy Awards for his writing on The Daily Show, has died. He was 55.
Johnson died “peacefully and unexpectedly” at his Los Angeles home on Jan. 14 of a cardiac issue, his wife, actress Rozie Bacchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“He never got to eat the Texas toast he was making, or the 4 lbs. of crab legs he found on sale and crammed in the freezer two nights prior,” she said in a statement.
“Tom had such a big heart and cared deeply about taking care of others. His work ethic was impeccable. He was fair, kind, talented, inclusive and funny as hell.”
Born on July 25, 1968, in Fairfax, Virginia, Johnson began his career after college and founded the Network Comedy Troupe. He also toured as a comedian and performed at venues across the country and on television.

One of The Onion’s classic headlines reads: “Marilyn Manson Now Going Door-To-Door Trying To Shock People.” The satirical article, published in 2001, was a devastating blow to a musician whose career consisted of dressing like a lunatic and screaming profane lyrics. Once you shine a light on it, the shtick becomes embarrassing quickly.
That headline came to mind when reading a tweet Ricky Gervais posted in the days before the release of his new Netflix special, “Armageddon”: “In this show, I talk about sex, death, pedophilia, race, religion, disability, free speech, global warming, the holocaust and Elton John. If you don’t approve of jokes about any of these things, then please don’t watch. You won’t enjoy it and you’ll get upset.”

It’s strangely appropriate that Rob Reiner’s new documentary, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, is getting its film festival rollout at a moment when most of Brooks’ body of work as a writer-director is unavailable on any major streaming platform.
Maybe classics like Real Life, Lost in America and Defending Your Life will have streaming homes by the time HBO airs the documentary in November. But you know what will always be available? Finding Nemo. Brooks is justifiably revered in certain circles, but the decline of a popular monoculture since the 1970s, when his Saturday Night Live shorts and Johnny Carson appearances made his brand of irony-fueled wit pleasantly mainstream, means that for a larger audience, he’s a talking fish.

In its first season, Jeselnik sat down with Nick Kroll, Natasha Leggero, Kumail Nanjiani, Tig Notaro, Kristen Schaal and David Spade for the scoop on their careers, influences and other inside comedy shoptalk.
“I love making this show and look forward to continuing Comedy Central’s unprecedented winning streak through 2020,” said Jeselnik.

No, Bill Burr cannot talk about whether he’ll appear in the “Breaking Bad” movie or in the upcoming season of “Better Call Saul” (“I’m not allowed to comment on any of that s—“), but the “Paper Tiger” comic is happy to talk all things stand-up comedy — and we were happy to indulge him.
Let’s begin at the end: TheWrap asked Burr about his philosophy on closers or the final joke of a comedian’s set. What came out of that question was a pretty interesting revelation about this latest Netflix special.
“I’ve never really thought about it, but I just know a closer when I hear it coming out of my mouth. I’m like, ‘This is something I can close with,'” Burr said. “I’ll be honest with you: I had a different closer for this hour almost right until the night we taped.

In the opening moments of his new talk show “Good Talk,” comedian Anthony Jeselnik jokes that he’s “pretty much pure evil, straight from hell.”
His last stand-up special, “Fire in the Maternity Ward,” included jokes about dropping babies, a neighbor with Alzheimer’s and the idea that “any trimester is good” for an abortion. It drew far more positive press than the mixed reaction to Dave Chappelle’s recent “Sticks and Stones.”
Why? Jeselnik explained.
“Chappelle is perceived as a moral center in this country. He has a very nuanced take on race. He has a very nuanced take on a lot of things. So when he attacks the trans community or talks about ‘I don’t believe the victims who say they got molested,’ I think people truly get upset,” Jeselnik told TheWrap.

Ahead of premiering his new Comedy Central series “Good Talk” this month, Anthony Jeselnik is slamming “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels for allowing Donald Trump to host an episode of the esteemed sketch-comedy show in November 2015. Trump was in the middle of his presidential campaign at the time and Michael’s decision to let him host prompted fan protests. The November 2015 episode was Trump’s second time hosting “SNL” and it was widely panned by television critics and cast members.
“I think Lorne Michaels helped get Trump elected,” Jeselnik tells The Daily Beast. “I think putting him on ‘Saturday Night Live’ was way worse than the hair-ruffling thing. I was disgusted by it. It was two rich guys helping each other out. I don’t know how I would have dealt with it if I was on the show. I found it to be, quite frankly, revolting.”

Viacom’s cable portfolio was once a shining example to the rest of the industry, but the company has been struggling to revitalize its most important brands for years. With the merger between Viacom and CBS now officially underway, the health of those brands is more important than ever.
When Bob Bakish took over as president and CEO in late 2016, he specifically called out six core networks — MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central, Bet and Paramount Network — as the keys to Viacom’s success. Since then, Viacom has reorganized its executive ranks and laid off employees across numerous brands as it attempts to lure viewers and streamline for the digital age.
Among the more significant of these moves: In May 2018, Debra Lee stepped down as the head of Bet after more than a decade at the helm of the African-American focused cabler; In October of that same year, longtime Viacom...

Comedy Central’s “South Side” series premiere reached beyond the Chicago city limits — especially among African Americans.
Counting three days of playback, the new comedy’s first episode posted a 0.85 rating among African American viewers ages 18-49, making it Comedy Central’s highest-rated series premiere in that demo since June 2017. Those Nielsen numbers also make “South Side” the No. 1 new primetime cable comedy premiere of 2019 in the same demo.
Among all adults 18-49, “South Side” averaged a 0.30 rating, which also counts three days of delayed viewing. All told, the comedy’s premiere drew 2.2 million multiplatform viewers — that tally counts the premiere, streaming tune-in, and replays.

When do Hollywood’s efforts at increased diversity feel like progress, and when do they feel like pandering? That’s the question pondered on the latest “Low Key” podcast, thanks to a report that a black actress, Lashana Lynch, may play 007 in the next James Bond film. You can listen below or right here:

Aziz Ansari is coming back to TV screens. And soon.
In a surprise announcement, Netflix revealed on Monday that the latest stand-up special from the “Master of None” co-creator will be dropping Tuesday, July 9. “Aziz Ansari Right Now,” his fifth comedy special, was filmed as part of the Brooklyn performances of his ongoing international tour, “Road to Nowhere.”
It’s Ansari’s first project available to the public since the release of “Master of None” Season 2. Shortly after the awards circuit tour ended in early 2018, a controversial article detailing sexual misconduct put the show and Ansari’s career on hiatus. According to reports from those same Brooklyn shows back in May, Ansari addresses those allegations as part of his hour-long set. Earlier shows in the tour, even when not referring to the incident directly, did seem to showcase a contrite Ansari, even when couched in a comedy context.

“It’s tougher to make people laugh at these dark things,” declares Anthony Jeselnik about the challenges faced in his Netflix comedy special “Fire in the Maternity Ward.” Watch our exclusive video interview above where he adds, “People hear the word ‘Alzheimers’ and it’s an escape act from there. It’s like I’m upside down, covered in chains, in a thing full of water. How’s he gonna get out of this one? The punchline has to be good enough that it makes them laugh and they forgive me for bringing it up in the first place.”

Exclusive: Comedian Jacqueline Novak will launch a new Off Broadway comedy at The Cherry Lane Theatre in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village this summer, and if the title and subject matter don’t get your attention, the comedy world support certainly will.
Executive produced by Mike Birbiglia and presented by Natasha Lyonne, Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees debuts July 10, with an official opening set for July 22. The limited engagement runs through Aug. 18.
The official description: Get On Your Knees is the most high-brow show about blowjobs you’ll ever see. Novak spins her material on the femininity of the penis and the stoicism of the vulva into an unexpectedly philosophical show that’s part feminist outcry, part coming-of-age tale of triumph.
Ira Glass has called the show a “nearly Talmudic dissection of a subject. Really funny and just really like nothing else.” Amy Schumer says Novak’s comedy “is the...

It may be easy to write-off Anthony Jeselnik’s stand-up material as sexist, but the star of Netflix’s “Fire in the Maternity Ward” comedy special is actually more female-friendly than audiences might assume.
Jeselnik almost exclusively hires female comedians to open for him on tour. TheWrap asked the offensive joke-teller behind “The Jeselnik Offensive” why that is, exactly.
“I want the opposite of me before I go on stage,” the comic explained. “It’s a total show and I want [the audience] to kind of be set up.”

Don’t call Anthony Jeselnik a shock comic — that phrase is more derogatory and dismissive than his harshest punchline about the touchiest subject.
The veteran stand-up comedian, whose new special “Fire in the Maternity Ward” was released Tuesday on Netflix, prefers the term “villain” for his on-stage persona. Jeselnik assumes most of the audience comprehends that he’s playing a character, but the one-off “Last Comic Standing” host also genuinely doesn’t seem to care when some people don’t.
And one day, he may be more palatable to those who currently don’t “get it.”

Veteran Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. has signed a first-look development deal with Comedy Central that covers content for television and new media. Under the pact, Woods will headline his third one-hour stand-up special for the network and will also write and star in an original digital series titled The Night Pigeon.
Separate from the new pact, Comedy Central has given a pilot green light to Wood’s Jefferson County: Probation, from Trevor Noah & Aaron McGruder. The project, which had been in the works at Comedy Central for a year, will film in Wood’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama this May.
Written by Wood and Aaron McGruder (Boondocks), Jefferson County: Probation is based on Wood’s early life. It stars him as a probation officer willing to bend the rules to help the clients he monitors, much to the chagrin of his partner and everyone else in his life.
