Steven Spielberg has made no secret of his support for Joe Biden’s reelection, and now the Oscar winner is rolling up his sleeves for the team.
Spielberg is involved strategically in the incumbent’s campaign and even the specifics of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August, Deadline has confirmed.
“Steven wants to be as helpful as possible to the president,” a well-placed source says. “He believes this is one of the most important elections in the nation’s history.”
The filmmaker is unlikely to helm a short movie at the DNC about Biden this year the way he helped do for John Kerry in 2004, and again at the 2008 convention when Barack Obama was nominated. However, Spielberg has been working with key advisors on how to “convey the president’s successes and his vision for the country” to viewers and delegates, I’m told.

When they arrived, officers found a body next to a parking structure, an LAPD spokeswoman told City News Service.
The victim’s name, age or gender were not immediately known.

It’s the 30-story elephant on the Los Angeles skyline — and seemingly no one, including Mayor Karen Bass, has decided what to do about it. The Oceanwide Plaza luxury development has stood next to Crypto.com Arena vacant and half-finished since 2019, when its Chinese developer, having already spent $1.1 billion on it, ran out of money.
In December, three L.A. taggers — Akua, Sour and Castle — broke into the highest of Oceanwide’s three towers and spray-painted their names across its floor-to-ceiling windows. The daring stunt served as a bat signal to the rest of L.A.’s graffiti community, including prolific tagger Endem, who dreamed of seeing his own name in 13-foot-tall block letters adorning the building.
“A lot of people were actually hitting me up on Instagram,” says Endem. “Like, ‘What’s up with that building?’ It was the talk of the town within the community, but no one had the balls to hit it.

Today is the latest deadline for campaigns and committees to disclose donors, offering a glimpse at who is putting up huge sums in the 2024 elections, which may end up being the most expensive ever.
According to the latest filings with the Federal Election Commission, Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is campaign co-chair of Joe Biden’s campaign, contributed $1 million to the Ff Pac, which is short for Future Forward, the main independent entity backing the president’s re-election bid. Future Forward made news this week when it announced plans to spend $250 million in an advertising blitz in battleground states. Money is being raised via the SuperPAC and a non profit, meaning some donors have to be disclosed and others do not.
Also contributing to Ff Pac was Sheryl Sandberg, the former Meta exective who recently announced that she was leaving the tech giant’s board. According to Fec records, she contributed $500,059 in...

Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden wrapped up a weekend of fundraising in Los Angeles on Sunday, with a record amount raised.
More than $15 million was raised through the weekend, including for the Biden Victory Fund, said campaign co-chair Jeffrey Katzenberg, founding partner of WndrCo. That is the most raised for a single visit to Los Angeles of any president or presidential candidate, he said.
It also surpassed the amount raised by Barack Obama in May, 2012, when Obama headlined a fundraiser at the home of George Clooney and co-hosted by Katzenberg. That fundraising trip brought in almost $15 million.
Through the weekend, Biden and the first lady headlined seven events, including private gatherings with high-dollar donors and a Hollywood-centric fundraiser on Friday evening at the Holmby Hills home of James Costos, the former U.S. ambassador to Spain, and designer Michael Smith. Updated, with complete remarks: President Joe Biden told the crowd at a fundraiser this evening, “You’re the reason that Donald Trump is a former president, or he hates when I say it, a defeated president.”
At the Holmby Hills home of designer Michael Smith and former ambassador James Costos, Biden rallied his donors, many of whom backed him in the last campaign, while turning his focus on his likely 2024 rival. He spent a substantial part of his remarks warning of Trump as a threat to democracy, a contrast that many of the president’s steadfast backers believe will boost support as the 2024 campaign gets in full swing.
“Literally, I believe, the future of democracy is at stake,” Biden said, according to a pool report. “The greatest threat Trump poses is to our democracy, because if we lost that, we lose everything.” Read his complete remarks at the end of the story.

Updated: Taylor Swift arrived tonight in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles for the premiere of her Eras Tour concert film premiere at The Grove, generating more noise and glitz than an Oscar Best Song performance atop the Academy Museum. Heck, the fountain at the outdoor luxe Rick Caruso-owned mall was spouting pink water.
And while Swift’s appearance caused The Grove to close down for the day, in addition to streets, the premiere in the 600 square foot space wasn’t a chaotic affair, rather quite organized. Swift appeared very early in the evening and was greeted by a crowd of screaming fans before ducking inside.

There will be road closures and more in the Fairfax District later today as the City of Angels braces for the world premiere of the superstar’s concert movie Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour at The Grove.
Several sources tell Deadline that the upscale, Rick Caruso-owned outdoor mall will be closed down all day today to prepare for the event, with Swift heavily buzzed to put in an appearance.

Hollywood political stalwart Jeffrey Katzenberg had some choice words to say about billionaire developer Rick Caruso and his 2022 mayoral campaign recently, accusing the former LA mayoral candidate of exploiting the homeless problem by giving tours of “Skid Row” to embarrass city officials.
Caruso, who lost to Karen Bass in the LA mayor election last November, started giving tours of the downtown homeless camps during his campaign to highlight the city’s growing problem while presenting his strategy to solve it.
Katzenberg, a political uber-donor, told Vanity Fair that Caruso should have put his money where his mouth is.

Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, turned down a Skims “swag bag” from Kim Kardashian.
Reuters editor Ben Welsh reported the Kardashian family sent the mayor items worth $600 from Kim’s shapewear and clothing company, according to a log received through a public records request. The swag bag included Skims goods, liquor, hot sauce, makeup items and more.
But of the more than 130 gifts sent to Bass, including a $40 picture frame from CAA president Richard Lovett, the gift from the Kardashians she received in April was one of the few she declined to accept. Karen Bass was sworn in as mayor of Los Angeles on Sunday, becoming the first woman and second Black person to lead the city.
At a large ceremony at Microsoft Theater, against a backdrop of City Hall, Bass took the oath administered by Vice President Kamala Harris, and planned to talk about how Los Angeles was at an “inflection point” as it faces problems of homelessness and housing.
She plans to declare a state of emergency on homelessness on Monday as her first act as mayor that will “recognize the severity of our crisis and break new ground to maximize our ability to urgently move people inside, and do so for good.”
The move will “create the structure necessary for us to have a true, unified and citywide strategy to set us on the path to solve homelessness,” she said.

In an electoral contest that divided Hollywood celebrities down the middle, six-term Democrat Congresswoman Karen Bass has been elected the 43rd Mayor of Los Angeles, ‘Variety’ reports quoting Associated Press projections.
Real estate developer and fellow Democrat Rick Caruso, who was supported by Katie Perry, ‘Avengers’ star Chris Pratt and Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, called Bass to concede the race on Wednesday evening (U.S. Pacific Time).
Bass, the first woman to be elected to the office, had garnered support from a large swath of Hollywood, including Ari Emanuel, Shonda Rhimes, Rosario Dawson, Steven Spielberg, J J Abrams and Jeffrey Katzenberg – the former Fox Studios boss and co-founder of DreamWorks Animation had put 1.85 million into a committee to support the mayor-elect’s candidacy.
“The people of Los Angeles have sent a clear message. It is time for change and it is time for urgency,” Bass said in a statement.

Updated, 4:15 Pm: Rep. Karen Bass has defeated developer Rick Caruso in the race for Los Angeles Mayor, becoming the first woman to lead the city. With 70 of the vote tallied, the latest update from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County shows Bass with an insurmountable lead of more than 46,500 votes over Caruso.
Caruso had led the race after Election Day, but was surpassed by Bass last Friday. Since then, Bass has led consistently in each of the last six updates.
Caruso called Bass to concede this evening.
In a statement, Bass said, “The people of Los Angeles have sent a clear message: it is time for change and it is time for urgency.
“I ran for mayor to urgently confront the crises our hometown faces. Tonight, 40,000 Angelenos will sleep without a home — and 5 will not wake up. Crime is increasing and families are being priced out of their neighborhoods.

U.S. Rep. Karen Bass defeated developer Rick Caruso Wednesday to become the next mayor of Los Angeles, as voters elevated the first Black woman to hold the post as City Hall contends with multiple scandals that have shaken trust in government, an out-of-control homeless crisis and rising crime rates.
With 70 of the vote tallied, Bass had amassed an insurmountable lead of nearly 47,000 votes.
Bass — a Democrat who was on President-elect Joe Biden’s shortlist for vice president — overcame more than 100 million in spending by the billionaire Caruso’s campaign while arguing that she would be a coalition builder who could heal a troubled city of nearly 4 million.
The election tested whether voters in the heavily Democratic city were willing to turn away from their liberal tendencies and embrace an approach that would place a strong emphasis on public safety.

The actor and presenter Jameela Jamil hit out at the “rich, white celebrities” who opted to vote for billionaire former Republican Rick Caruso for mayor of Los Angeles.
Mr Caruso, a real estate tycoon who promised to “clean up” the city with a controversial plan to force people experiencing homelessness into massive shelters, currently has a narrow lead over Rep Karen Bass with under the half the vote counted.
Given that later-arriving ballots in Los Angeles tend to favour progressive candidates, Ms Bass may well prevail. But the race exposed major faultlines in LA politics, splitting the loyalities of the city’s celebrities. British-born Jamil, in an Election Day post on Instagram, did not hold back.
“The man became a Democrat This year after being a life long Republican,” Jamil wrote of Mr Caruso. “He ran as an independent when he entered public politics for a while and just switched.

The focus in the US midterm elections may rightly be on the races for the Senate and House of Representatives, but it is also the time for a host of local elections, of which none is more hotly debated in Hollywood than the Los Angeles mayoral poll.
Necessitated by the departure of Eric Garcetti, who’s US President Joe Biden’s nominee for Ambassador to India and is still awaiting Senate confirmation, the mayoral contest sees six-term US Congresswoman and Democrat Karen Bass pitted against real estate billionaire, and Republican-turned-Democrat, Rick Caruso.
Caruso, who enjoys a slight edge in a dead-heat race dominated by the city’s problem of homelessness and eyebrows raised by his 100 million campaign machine, was given a big shout out by pop star Katy Perry, a loyal Democrat who had performed for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Karen Bass and Rick Caruso are in a close battle to become the next mayor of Los Angeles, as voters proved highly divided over who is best equipped to tackle the city’s homelessness crisis.
As of Wednesday morning, Caruso held a narrow edge with 51.2 to 48.8 for Bass. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder will post the next update to the count on Friday, and a winner may not be clear for some time.
In the June primary, Caruso held a single-digit lead over Bass in the initial returns, only for Bass to surpass him as ballots were tallied over the next several days.
Bass struck an optimistic tone in speaking to her supporters on Tuesday night at the Hollywood Palladium, saying she was fighting for the soul of the city.
“It’s gonna be a long night, and it might take a few days, but when we win –” and the crowd erupted in cheers.

Katy Perry is taking heat for a voting-booth photo she posted to Instagram revealing she cast her Los Angeles Mayoral race vote for billionaire developer Rick Caruso.

Caruso is running as a Democrat in overwhelmingly Blue L.A. County, but he was a registered Republican until recently. Perry, who performed for Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in 2016, was quickly and widely criticized for the post, on which the comments were disabled.

Showbiz figures headlined online town halls, fund-raising appeals and campaign endorsements in the final effort before Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Midterm trends favor the party out of power, and polls suggest that Republicans may make substantial gains, particularly in winning control of the House.
But the difficult environment for Democrats did not depress fundraising this cycle. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, showbiz sources have donated almost 57 million to federal campaigns and committees, exceeding the level donated in the last midterm, 2018. Democrats drew 87 of the contributions and Republicans collected 13, more lopsided than any other midterm election since Crp has collected records.
The top candidate recipient of showbiz money was Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-ga), drawing about 1.2 million in contributions from entertainment sources in his effort to retain his seat against Republican Herschel Walker. The top donor was producer Ted Snowdon, who has donated more than 3 million to candidates and committees.

The owner of the Television City studio is accusing developer Rick Caruso of “hypocrisy” for claiming to support the entertainment industry while opposing the 1.25 billion development of the studio, which is next door to Caruso’s The Grove shopping center.

Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin de León said that he won’t resign from the Los Angeles City Council, even as a chorus of top Democrats have called for him to step down amid the fallout following the publication of a leaked audio conversation.
Speaking to CBS Los Angeles’ Tom Wait, de León said that he instead will work to repair relationships in the community and with his council colleagues.
“I have to do the hard work,” de León said. “I have to regain the trust of my colleagues. It won’t be easy.”
He said that his refusal to resign was not “about me,” but had to do with representation for his district.
The Los Angeles Times last week published the leaked audio, in which then-City Council President Nury Martinez was heard making a racist remark about Councilman Mike Bonin’s Black son and disparaging comments about other ethic groups.

Attorneys are set to give opening statements in the Danny Masterson rape trial on Tuesday, as a jury is expected to be chosen by mid-morning.
Over the last week, the initial pool of 225 potential jurors has been narrowed to about 85. On Monday, the defense and the prosecution began to question the potential jurors in open court — in what is called voir dire — after an initial round of screening from Judge Charlaine Olmedo.
One of the key questions has been how much the potential jurors know about Scientology. Masterson is a Scientologist and each of his three accusers was a Scientologist at the time of the alleged rape. The accusers — now all ex-Scientologists — have said that they delayed going to the police out of concern that they could be excommunicated.
At the outset of his questioning, defense attorney Philip Cohen emphasized that Scientology is not on trial.

Herrera, who does not appear to have made racist comments, has apologized for not speaking up when others did at a secretly recorded meeting that Local 399 alleges was taped at the offices of the L.A. County Federation of Labor. City Council President Nury Martinez resigned Monday, and there have been calls for Council members Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León, who also took part in the leaked conversation, to step down as well.

Danny Masterson’s lawyer warned on Monday that TV ads in the race for Los Angeles mayor could inflame hostility toward the Church of Scientology, making it harder for Masterson to receive a fair trial.
Masterson, the former “That ’70s Show” star, is scheduled to go on trial next week on three charges of forcible rape. Masterson is a member of the Church of Scientology, and the church and its processes are likely to figure in the trial.
The church has also become an issue in the mayor’s race. Last week, Rick Caruso began running an ad attacking Karen Bass for praising Scientology during a speech in 2010. The ad includes a quote referring to the church as a “ruthless global scam.” Bass responded by saying that she “absolutely condemn(s) their practices.”
“The public is being inundated with this,” said Masterson’s lawyer, Philip Cohen, at a court hearing on Monday.

Actors’ Equity has endorsed Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock’s re-election bid, marking the first time the union’s National Council has voted to endorse a political candidate in the state. Warnock, a Democrat, is facing Republican challenger Herschel Walker in the November 8 midterm election.
“Reverend Warnock is focused on lowering costs for hardworking families and holding corporations accountable for price-gouging, from the gas pump to the pharmacy counter, which will benefit arts workers across Georgia,” said Al Vincent Jr., executive director of Actors’ Equity Association. “We are excited to make sure Equity members across the Peach State know that Reverend Warnock will also be an advocate for tax fairness for arts workers and that they should vote to return him to the Senate this fall.”
Equity’s endorsement is another sign that the 51,000-member union is becoming more politically engaged. On Wednesday, Equity endorsed L.A. mayoral candidate Karen Bass over Rick Caruso,...

Actors’ Equity has endorsed Karen Bass for mayor of Los Angeles, marking the first time the union’s National Council has ever voted to endorse an L.A. mayoral candidate. The 51,000-member union has more than 7,000 living in Los Angeles. If elected, Bass would be the city’s first female mayor. Polls show her leading real estate developer Rick Caruso.
“As Mayor, Karen Bass will fight for affordable housing and good paying union jobs, so that working people have what they need to raise families in Los Angeles,” said Al Vincent Jr., executive director of Actors’ Equity Association. “We look forward to having an advocate in City Hall who prioritizes fair treatment and pay for arts workers.”
Equity says its public policy priorities include “defending and protecting the right to collectively bargain, a prevailing wage in the arts, racial justice, a strong minimum wage, stronger federal and state arts funding,...

The rising crime rate in Los Angeles is a hot-button issue in this year’s race for Los Angeles mayor. And the issue just hit closer to home for one candidate.
Democratic Congresswoman Karen Bass said Saturday that her home was burglarized.
“Last night, I came home and discovered that my house had been broken into and burglarized,” the Bass campaign said in a statement. “LAPD was called, and I appreciate their assistance. At this time, it appears that only two firearms, despite being safely and securely stored, were stolen. Cash, electronics and other valuables were not. It’s unnerving and, unfortunately, it’s something that far too many Angelenos have faced.”
The Los Angeles Police Dept. has not yet issued a statement on the matter.
Bass is facing fellow Democrat Rick Caruso in the coming election.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris jointly endorsed Rep. Karen Bass in her run for Los Angeles mayor today.
“We are endorsing Karen Bass for Los Angeles mayor because we are eager to continue to partner with her on innovative strategies to reduce homelessness and increase public safety and prosperity,” Biden and Harris said in a joint statement released by the Bass campaign. “Karen Bass has our friendship, and she has earned our respect through her leadership in Congress on crime prevention strategies, effective and fair policing, and the welfare of children and families.”
Bass, a Democrat, has been the U.S. representative for California’s 37th congressional district since 2011. The district, covers several areas south and west of downtown Los Angeles. She finished first in the June primary race for mayor and will square off in November against billionaire businessman Rick Caruso, who is also a registered Democrat.
