Matthew Hobin, a producer who has worked on series including Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen, was driving for Uber Eats during the pandemic when he found out his Netflix food series Fresh, Fried and Crispy got four Daytime Emmy nominations including a best director nod for himself.
Hobin, who runs OU812 Productions and was a co-exec producer on truTV’s Storage Hunters and exec producer on Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods, told Deadline that he pulled over, celebrated for 30 seconds, and went back to delivering food.
His story is symbolic of a broader problem in the unscripted industry, which is impacting significant numbers of people.

Ever since Netflix announced it would be opening a Los Angeles pop-up restaurant, the jokes have been flying on social media. Would the servers use an algorithm to ask, “Since you liked grilled cheese, can we suggest broccoli?” Would you be allowed to share food with your friends or would it be forbidden, like Netflix password-sharing?
But at the preview night Tuesday for Netflix Bites at Short Stories Hotel on Fairfax, it was clear that the seriously delicious menu for the three-month pop-up, inspired by the streamer’s food programming, was no laughing matter. Imaginative cocktails from mixologists, like “Drink Masters” contestant Kate Gerwin, got guests in the mood with concoctions like the Oaxacan on Top of the World, while Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos mingled with the chefs. Netflix’s VP of Live Experiences Greg Lombardo welcomed guests, explaining, “We’re always focused on bringing our fans closer to the stories that they love.

“Silos Baking Competition” premiered to record-setting ratings for Magnolia Network Sunday, a turnout Chip and Joanna Gaines apparently saw coming a mile away, as their channel is already in pre-production on another baking competition series, Variety has learned exclusively.
That unannounced baking competition is the first of several in the works at the cable channel, according to one source close to production.
Simulcast across Food Network and Magnolia Network, a joint venture between the Gaineses and Warner Bros. Discovery, the one-hour premiere of “Silos Baking Competition,” which takes place at Chip and Jo’s Waco-based bakery, Silos Baking Co., drew more than 1.5 million viewers Sunday.
For Magnolia specifically, the first episode of “Silos” gave the cable channel, which was launched in January after a rebrand of Discovery’s DIY Network, its highest-rated Sunday in more than two years among women ages 18 and up, thanks to 196 growth in the time period from the DIY days.

Showbiz has returned to in-person TV awards campaigns, meaning that Hollywood is gathering Emmy voters and contenders for panels and parties on a nightly basis. But the best dinner of awards season may not be served in L.A. at all. The James Beard Awards, one of the most coveted accolades in the food world, are being held in Chicago on Monday, preceded by the James Beard Media Awards on Saturday, and small-screen favorites like Phil Rosenthal and “Top Chef: Family Style” are in the running.
Among the 2022 nominees for long form media this year is Rosenthal’s beloved Netflix series “Somebody Feed Phil,” in which the “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator takes his comedic sensibilities and appetite on the road, connecting with people in cities around the world while trying their culture’s cuisines.

The trailer for “Menudo: Forever Young,” the HBO Max docuseries about the titular Latin American boy band, has been released.
Directed by filmmakers Angel Manuel Soto and Kristofer Ríos, the four-part docuseries follows the rise of Menudo, a Puerto Rican musical group formed in 1977 by producer Edgardo Díaz that became one of the most popular boy bands in history, selling 20 million records worldwide during the 1980s. The series chronicles the group’s meteoric rise in the ’80s, and the fall it suffered during the ’90s, after sexual abuse allegations against Díaz surfaced. Over a dozen former members of the band were interviewed for the docuseries to discuss the exploitation they experienced while performing for the group.
“Menudo: Forever Young” is executive produced by Soto, Cristina Costantini and Jeff Plunkett of Muck Media, Alex Fumero of Trojan Horse, Bryn Mooser and Justin Lacob of Xtr. Rios co-executive produces with Maura Anderson.

Elizabeth Vargas didn’t seek to become a prominent voice for the recovery community. But the longtime ABC News anchor was put on that path nearly a decade ago when her treatment for alcohol addiction and anxiety became tabloid fodder. Once the news was out, Vargas decided she’d better be the one to tell her story. She wrote a much-praised book, “Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction,” in 2016. Last year she launched a podcast, “Heart of the Matter,” with the Partnership to End Addiction nonprofit advocacy group. The series is devoted to candid conversations about addiction and mental health crises. Vargas was also just tapped by Fox to host the revival of “America’s Most Wanted,” scheduled to premiere in March.

‘Fire Tucker Carlson’: Fox News Host Condemned for Comments on Deadly Shooting of Kenosha Protesters
Fox News host Tucker Carlson received immediate backlash on Twitter after saying Kyle Rittenhouse, who was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the shootings of two protesters in Kenosha, Wis., “decided to maintain order when no one else would.”
“Are we really surprised this looting and arson accelerated to murder? How shocked are we that 17-year-olds with rifles decided they had to maintain order when no one else would? Everyone can see what was happening in Kenosha. It was getting crazier by the hour,” Carlson said on his show.
Video from Carlson’s Wednesday night Fox News broadcast went viral on Twitter, with many people speaking out against his comments and saying he should be fired.
Billy Eichner, Ike Barinholtz and Julie Klausner were among the entertainment-industry figures calling for Carlson to be fired.
