Guy Ritchie is one of the most recognizable British auteurs, thanks to his bold narratives that are a kind of Quentin Tarantino-esque stories framed by British humor and set in a British working-class and criminal milieu.
However, despite his colossal contribution to pop culture, which rivals that of the aforementioned Tarantino, Guy Ritchie's films are far from box office success. While many of his films have indeed made huge sums of money at the worldwide box office, there are also plenty of absolute commercial failures despite warm reviews from audiences, such as RocknRolla, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and the recent The Covenant.
The same seems to be the case with Ritchie's new big screen project, the feature length film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Although it was released less than a week ago, the box office numbers are far from reassuring, but the movie...

There were high hopes for Henry Cavill’s latest spy thriller The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare which had its premier in New York on April 13th, and released across the country on April 19th. After the failure of the actor’s previous film Argylle, fans have been eager to see the actor strike gold in his second collaboration with Guy Ritchie.

While the film started positively by earning great reviews and ratings from critics and preview audiences, it looks like luck has run out for Cavill and Ritchie at the box office following its public release across the USA. The movie has achieved a dubious record held by Argylle as far as domestic box office collection is concerned.

Henry Cavill’s role as Nazi-killing commando soldier, Major Gus March-Phillips in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare required one unique training for his role. While Cavill killed it in the gunfire and action scenes acting like a madman with his tongue out, it was his twirly stylish mustache that needed training. It appears that the mustache was a more difficult job than executing the action scenes.

Henry Cavill is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most versatile actors in Hollywood, who has a career spanning from thrillers to action flicks and even television projects. While he is known for his prolific performance, improvisation isn’t something that we expect from Cavill. But you’ll be shocked to know how the actor improvised a couple of gleefully bloody scenes in Guy Ritchie’s latest offering.

Appearing in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, a story based on secret, real-life WWII commandos, Henry Cavill delivered a few Nazi-killing sequences where he is seen sticking his tongue out like a rock star, out of sheer happiness, every time he kills a German soldier. Well, that was apparently improvised by Guy Ritchie and Cavill.

The new spy thriller set during World War II entitled The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has the unique distinction of being a somewhat true account of not only a pivotal mission during the campaign, but also of the germination of the character of James Bond – to a certain extent at least.
Ostensibly based on true events documented in recently declassified British War Department documents, the film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare imparts the tale of an organization created during World War II under the guidance of Prime Minister Winston Chruchill. This “top-secret” unit is comprised of a group of men (and one woman) brought together by Gus March-Phillips (Henry Cavill) to undertake an audacious mission that could alter the course of the war against the Nazis.
Phillips is recruited for this mission by Brigadier Gubbins (Cary Elwes) – otherwise known as “M” – and his second in command Ian Fleming (Freddie Fox...

Following his exit from two major franchises namely DC and The Witcher series, Henry Cavill has seen a bit of a lean period in Hollywood. To add to his woes, his spy thriller Argylle also sank without a trace at the box office. Cavill’s bad fortune in this genre started in 2015 when his film The Man from U.N.C.L.E was also panned.

The title is the worst thing about this lively, fun and largely true World War II adventure The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which is inspired by the Damien Lewis book of the same name but extending it to add: How Churchill’s Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops.
Guy Ritchie has taken this story of an illicit black ops crew, mostly of the prisoner variety, who with the permission of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Rory Kinnear) was commissioned and put into action (a ragtag group of warriors if ever there was one) in order to sink, as it were, Nazi Germany’s U-boats operation that had been preventing the U.S. from entering the war in Europe.

Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on war correspondent Damien Lewis’s book of the same name, which tells the true story of an unsanctioned British military mission to sink the German ships that supplied all of their U-boats around the Spanish island of Fernando Po during World War II. The film also makes a point of announcing that the story comes from documents from Winston Churchill’s first term in office that were declassified in 2016, introducing each shrewd and ruthlessly efficient member of the ragtag crew carrying out this mission with a litany of their qualifications.
Narratively, the film plays out like a traditional historical thriller, yet it turns these men into impossibly proficient, virtually invincible killing machines who dispose of Nazis with such casual ease that they might as well be superheroes. And not only is the leader of this vicious, unruly pack, Major Gus March-Phillips,...

Director Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” may be based on secret, real-life WWII commandos, but that didn’t stop him up from upping the Nazi-killing brutality.
In a couple gleefully bloody scenes, Henry Cavill’s character Major Gus March-Phillipps massacres Nazis while sticking his tongue out in a joyful, manic grin. As it turns out, Cavill improvised the scene, which caught viewers’ attention in the action film’s first trailer.
“It was a co-improvisation between Guy and myself,” Cavill told Variety at the film’s New York premiere Monday. “Guy said, ‘I want you to have more fun with it. Stick your tongue out or something.’ And so we did and it stuck, as featured quite well in the trailer. That was the first moment where we decided Gus was going to be slightly unhinged in these moments, and that makes it more fun.”

Cinematic universes may be on the decline, but Guy Ritchie has just stumbled upon the potential for a fun one with his frequently amusing “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” a light and sloppy World War II caper that reimagines Winston Churchill (Rory Kinnear) as Nick Fury, and a series of rakish, Nazi-killing brutes as his own personal Avengers.
Men on a mission films like “The Guns of the Navarone” might seem to be the more obvious points of reference here, but by the time Churchill is spitting orders at Ian Fleming (“Slow Horses” shitheel Freddie Fox), assigning real-life actress/spy Marjorie Stewart to some “Casablanca” cosplay with a sadistic Nazi commander, and waiting by the phone to hear if his top-secret wrecking crew has managed to sink the German ships that supply Hitler’s fleet of U-boats, saving the world merely seems like the set-up for the bigger and better...

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an impossibly glib, rip-roaring, and exciting action picture. It’s the type of old-fashioned entertainment full of movie stars who get the job done, cracking-wise, and goddamn, they look good doing it. You can’t help but get swept up in the action and think a franchise is born.
It helps to have a cast with this much swashbuckling beefcake, including a Superman, a Reacher, and a G.I. Joe. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a film my wife calls the “Five Hot Guys” movie, with lots of eye candy and bloodshed for everyone involved. In a way, it is the perfect date movie.

In “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” British Prime Minister Winston Churchill authorizes an illicit mission to undermine Hitler’s fleet of German U-boats during World War II. The plan calls for renegades with little respect for the rules, led by a cocky ex-criminal named Gus March-Phillipps (Henry Cavill), who’s released from prison and called into a top-secret briefing. Oblivious to etiquette, Gus helps himself to a tall glass of Scotch whisky, steals an entire box of cigars and struts over to the desk where a priggish-looking officer sits. Gus swipes his lighter, making a fool of the uptight chap, who identifies himself as “Fleming, Ian Fleming.”
It doesn’t take an intelligence expert to put two and two together: Gus March-Phillipps would later serve as a prototype for Fleming’s James Bond character. Since “No Time to Die,” there’s been much talk about who might fill Daniel Craig’s shoes,...

With 2023’s compelling Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle The Covenant, Guy Ritchie took a more serious dramatic turn, away from the flashy action, glib humor and mashup of period settings with contemporary attitude that had characterized many of his biggest commercial successes. With its typically Ritchie-esque ensemble of quippy rascals, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare sees the director back on more customary territory. Sort of. Chronicling a covert World War II mission manned by a band of renegades, the movie is diverting but remains awkwardly stuck between a larkish caper and a more gripping combat action thriller.
Scripted by Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, Arash Amel and Ritchie, based on the nonfiction book by war specialist Damien Lewis, the remarkable story comes from British War Department documents dating back to Winston Churchill’s first term in office, which were declassified in 2016.

Have you ever wished that your favorite fictional character could actually exist and save the day? Well, for actor Alex Pettyfer, that wish seems to have been granted when his co-star, Henry Cavill, famously known as Superman, prevented him from “falling off a boat”. This near-death incident occurred on the set of their next film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which will hit theaters next month.
Although Cavill is sadly no longer DC’s Man of Steel due to James Gunn’s takeover, it appears that the British actor, 40, has adopted Superman’s valiant traits in real life. The upcoming Guy Ritchie film, based on Damien Lewis’s book of the same name, chronicles the experiences of the British organization (Special Operations Executive) during World War II.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Michael Sheen has been offered the leading role in The Quiet Ones, this week unveiled to be the next movie from Hammer Films. In addition, Brit actor Damien Lewis is also said to have been offered a part.
Based on a earlier script by Rampart/The Messenger writer & director Oren Moverman that has been re-drafted by John Pogue (Ghost Ship, U.S. Marshals), the horror is described as a ‘poltergeist movie’ by Hammer Films CEO Simon Oakes and which will start filming in May in South Africa.
Pogue himself will direct, with Quarantine 2: Terminal the only previous credit on his behind the camera CV.
“Inspired by true events, The Quiet Ones tells the story of an unorthodox professor who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to create a poltergeist. Based on the theory that...

We can’t yet determine how these two endeavors will turn out, but Michael Sheen is moving away from Twilight and Jesus Henry Christ. For that alone, this is an improvement.
Anyway, Variety informs us that the Welsh actor is in talks for Mariah Mundi & the Midas Box, a film version of G.P. Taylor‘s children’s novel that Jonathan Newman has been tapped to direct. Sam Neill, Lena Headey, and Ioan Gruffud are also being eyed for the Victorian London-set story that tell of “a 15-year-old boy, Mariah Mundi, whose world is torn apart by the disappearance of his parents, then the kidnapping of younger brother by unknown assailants.”
Sheen will play an “Indiana Jones-ish adventurer, Captain Charity, [with whom] he sets off in pursuit, arriving at the Prince Regent, a hotel hiding a fantastical underworld.” Dr. Grant will appear as “an arch villain,” Sarah Connor “his witch-seductress,” the main...

Long before it was announced that Warner Bros. had put the live-action adaptation of Akira on hold, Gary Oldman took himself out of the running for Colonel, and soon others followed to other projects. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oldman has signed on to join the cast of Albert Hughes Motor City. He will play as the film’s primary villain, a crime king. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association presented the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night and there were a few surprises, not least how tame controversial comedian Ricky Gervais was in hosting. More on that later but for now the results are important (although are they, really? – Isn’t this the 6th cousin to the Oscars who the Oscars barely recognise and like a disgruntled relation has to contend with once a year?) and the two big winners were Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist with two major awards each.
George Clooney won Best Actor Drama for The Descendants, which also won Best Motion Picture Drama above critics darling The Help, but a lot of pundits were expecting this going in. The Help, because of it’s civil rights story, was thought to be a tough sell to this crowd and is still likely to be the...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has rarely been a reliable indicator of excellence over the years with its Golden Globes awards, particularly with regards movies, but its 69th giving out of gongs seemed to get a lot of things right, and pointed towards some likely Oscar winners, too.
For instance, the battle for Best Picture is now a two horse race between The Descendants and The Artist, a pair of film that both took home a top prize from the gongs. Likewise, George Clooney and Meryl Streep look good bets for the top acting prizes, Woody Allen’s screenplay award should be replicated at the Oscars, and don’t be surprised if the supporting acting gongs go to Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) handed out the 2012 Golden Globe Awards tonight, which saw The Artist take home the most awards including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Actor (Musical or Comedy) for Jean Dujardin and Original Score for composer Ludovic Bource. Close behind was The Descendants, which took home two awards including Best Picture (Drama) and Best Actor (Drama) for George Clooney. The biggest story heading into the night, however, wasn't the actual awards, but host Ricky Gervais, whom I felt dialed it way back compared to last year and most of his jokes appeared as if they had been turned in ahead of time allowing the presenters time to write their own "witty" comebacks. In fact, it turned the night into a bit of a bore as I slowly began to feel as if our live blog was becoming a list of names and winners rather than anything interesting.

While they may not have been the year’s most critically acclaimed or the country’s most popular, each the following shows made this TV Addict’s Top 10 of ’11 for the simple reason that each week, they left us jonesing another fix. You know those people who say “less is more?” Yeah, they’re totally wrong. As the following programs prove, too much is never enough.
The Good Wife (CBS)
Since previous “Best Ofs” have already seen us shine the spotlight on the crackling chemistry that comes hand-in-hand with The Good Wife’s all-star ensemble and roster of guest stars that reads like a “Who’s Who” of Broadway, we thought we’d take this opportunity to highlight something slightly less sexy about the show that good doesn’t even begin to describe. For the first time ever, we polled the entire Sos staff on their favorite TV of the last 12 months. We knew that, given the fact that our contributors are (principally) spread out across Canada, the Us, and Britain, that the results might well be a mixed bag. What we didn’t necessarily expect was the level of consensus surrounding the upper quartile of the list. There was a clear groundswell of support for our collective #1, but competition was fierce for the spots just behind it. Here are the 20 best TV shows of 2011, according to the staff as a whole; stay tuned for The Televerse’s year-end wrap-up, in which Kate Kulzick and Simon Howell discuss their respecive favorites – and least favorites – in greater detail.

Homeland, Season 1, Episode 12: “Marine One”
Written by Alex Gansa, Howard Gordon and Chip Johannessen
Directed by Michael Cuesta
Airs Sundays at 10pm Et on Showtime
There are only two questions left over after the first season finale of Homeland. “Who is the mole?” and, “How can they hope to deliver a second season that lives up to this first one?” There’s no way to answer the first question, but considering many of us had been asking a variation on the second question all season long it seems the only answer is to trust the writers. They have earned that trust, and that couldn’t be clearer in light of the spectacular season finale.
The plot of the series didn’t advance in any huge ways, but it didn’t need to. Homeland has announced itself over and over again to be a show focused on its characters above the larger plot.

The weirdest thing about my list of the best television shows of the year is that "Mad Men" is not on it. This December, it feels odd not to be writing about the exploits of Don Draper and his fellow ad men and women. But the good news is that 2011 was a very good year for television, even without Roger Sterling's witticisms and Don's flings and existential crises.
I don't want to blather too much before getting to my list of 11 favorites, but a few notes are in order. First of all, yes, there are 11 shows on this list as opposed to my usual 10. AOL and The Huffington Post are highlighting various "Top 11 in '11" lists, and I was more than happy to be given one more slot by that company-wide initiative.
Secondly, per my usual policy, once I make my final list of favorites, I do not rank shows within that list.

Homeland, Season 1, Episode 11: “The Vest”
Written by Meredith Stiehm & Chip Johannessen
Directed by Clark Johnson
Airs Sundays at 10pm Et on Showtime
One thing about Homeland that should have been clear by now is that you have to expect the unexpected. This was supposed to be an explosive episode leading into an even more explosive finale. Of course, if the show has proven anything it’s that it will almost always choose character over action. This week there was an explosion, but this time the bomb was Carrie.
After being caught in the bomb blast last week and then being stuck in a hospital for days, Carrie has gone off her meds. Her bi-polar disorder has taken over, and it has manifested itself in manic fits over everything around her, including a lack of green pens. What’s interesting about her breakdown is how laser-focused she becomes. Carrie basically...

Showtime's "Homeland" is hands down my favorite new series of the year. Damien Lewis (Life), Claire Danes (Temple Grandin) and Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) are three incredibly intelligent and gifted actors who have taken this Israeli thriller adaptation produced by Howard Gordon (24) and run with it. .The Weekend. Season 1 Episode 7 sees Brody (Lewis) and Carrie (Danes) get a bit of a drunken weekend bender at her family's lakeside cabin. The alcohol and sexual contact lowers Carrie's normally steely guard, and in conversation she slips and mentions the Yorkshire Gold tea that Brody prefers. He is on to her. Check out the poster and trailer to inspiring family drama Will, starring 11 year old newcomer Perry Eggleton, alongside Bob Hoskins and Damien Lewis.
Screenterrier blogged about Perry's casting here. Joining him in the film and on the poster, as his two classmates Ritchie and Simon, are Brandon Robinson (Young Actors Theatre), who also plays a Lost Boy in Sky's upcoming Neverland, and Kieran Wallbanks (A&J Management) who starred last year in Cbbc's Combat Kids.
Eleven-year-old Will Brennan’s (Perry Eggleton) life is turned upside down when his long-absent father (Damian Lewis) reappears with tickets to the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul. But when fate intervenes, Will runs away to Istanbul for the biggest soccer match of the year, searching for meaning in a world that seems to have abandoned him. En route, he encounters Alek (Kristian Kiehling), a former Yugoslavian football star who abandoned the game during his country’s civil war.

Showtime brought Claire Danes back to our televisions and we are grateful. But Homeland is a show you won’t watch just for Danes — at least not after the first episode. Danes plays Carrie Mathison, a rule-breaking CIA agent, often at odds with her boss. Unknown to the agency, she has mental problems and takes antipsychotics. In her last mission gone awry, Carrie heard that an American prisoner had been “turned,” but thought no POWs were alive and didn’t report the intelligence. Now, however, Sgt. Nick Brody (Damien Lewis) has been found in an Afghan prison after eight years of torture.

One of the new series this fall that's got our interest piqued is Showtime's Homeland. Claire Danes stars as maverick CIA agent who becomes convinced that a rescued U.S. soldier (Damien Lewis) is part of an Al Qaeda conspiracy. Trouble is, she has a history of mental illness and is not exactly on solid ground with the agency.

Cop shows have been around almost as long as television itself and have run the gamut, from procedurals to sitcoms to serialized dramas. They’ve given us some of TV’s most memorable and enduring characters, not to mention some of the medium’s best performances. Yet, upon examination, disproportionately few of the detectives who grace our screens are particularly great at their jobs and often those that are have any number of person issues that get in the way. Between alcoholism, anger issues, corruption, family drama, and neuroses, a reliable TV cop can be hard to find, let alone one who’s great at their job. This isn’t a list of the most interesting cops or the best performances or even the most realistic. This list looks at the detectives we would want working our case if the need arose.

Homeland is so chilling, you should probably buy a special Snuggie just to watch it. (They sell them in camouflage if you want to be theme appropriate.) Oh, and maybe some psych meds.
