We’re getting the first look at Kate Hudson as President of a legendary basketball franchise in Mindy Kaling’s new comedy series Running Point (fka Untitled Mindy Kaling Comedy Series), set for premiere in 2025. Hudson and Kaling presented the new title and photos Wednesday during the Netflix Upfront presentation in New York City. You can see the photos above and below.
In Running Point, when a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.
Cast also includes Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Max Greenfield,...

The editors for the Hulu sketch comedy series, “History of the World: Part II,” had experience from all over the map but little in terms of sketch comedy. For George Mandl, Angel Gamboa Bryant and Daniel Flesher most of their past experience comes from half-hour and multi-camera comedies and variety programming like stand-up specials. But the presence of showrunners Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen served as a massive help in the editing process. “When we got in the edit bay and got the chance to work with them, if we asked a question about a scene or we wanted to try something, they’d say ‘Try it. Let’s see.’ Every time it elevated the scene,” Bryant tells Gold Derby during our recent web chat (watch the exclusive video interview above).

Two of the most successful specialty films of the year expand this weekend and a handful of others jump into an arthouse market that’s seen few new entrants in recent weeks as wide release piled on wide release.

A24’s Past Lives by Celine Song, which debuted in early June on four screens, expands to 296. The Maximum Truth brain trust of David Stassen and Ike Barinholtz have a history.
The two Chicagoans first met each other at summer camp when they were 7 years old, and they eventually became best friends as teenagers. Shortly thereafter, they formulated a plan to get their college degrees and then take a crack at Hollywood as writing and producing partners, with Barinholtz also serving as the comedic performer of the duo. Their story is very similar to Canada’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, making Stassen and Barinholtz their American counterparts, a comparison that Rogen himself supported recently. So Rogen’s involvement in Stassen and Barinholtz’s Maximum Truth and their Hulu limited series History of the World, Part II makes all the more sense.
In Maximum Truth, Stassen’s feature directorial debut, Barinholtz plays an attorney and “political consultant” named Rick Klingman. He’s Saul Goodman if Saul Goodman was completely ineffective,...

Drew Tarver is not oblivious to how Cary Dubek on “The Other Two” has been going in a very unsavory direction. “I feel like Cary has always been dipping his toe in a little bit of bad behavior of finding himself giving into his desperation over the first two seasons,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). ‘History Of The World Part II’: How The Comedians Let It All Hang Out In Hulu Series – Contenders TV
As obnoxious as the phrase “cancel culture” might be, it’s not unreasonable to assume that some skits might not have passed the smell test when Hulu’s History of the World Part II was in development.
But David Stassen, who served as showrunner on the eight-episode series, said there wasn’t a single conversation where someone said, “We shouldn’t do this.”
“Everyone thought of the best ideas, and we worked on them,” Stassen said Saturday during the show’s Contenders TV panel in Hollywood. “Hopefully, the best rose to the top.”

At the end of Mel Brooks' 1981 sketch comedy film "History of the World, Part I" (a movie /Film once ranked higher than "The Producers"), the director included a preview for the inevitable sequel and some of the segments that might be seen therein. Whereas Brooks explored the Stone Age, Ancient Rome, and Revolutionary France in "Part I," "Part II" was to feature a Viking funeral, "Hitler on Ice," and the distant future of "Jews in Space." In 2023, the mythic second part finally came to fruition — as a six-part miniseries — with the 96-year-old Brooks writing and producing along with an entire team of the comedy world's biggest stars. Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinhotlz, Nick Kroll, and David Stassen are credited as the primary writers, and the sketches are presented in shorter snippets, skipping merrily back and forth in time.

Hollywood actor-director Mel Brooks came up with the title to his 1981 comedy feature ‘History of the World, Part I’ as a joke. There were never any plans to make a Part II. But now, things seem to be changing.
As the streaming revolution took hold, Brooks, his producing partner Kevin Salter and rightsholder Searchlight Pictures decided to explore a long overdue sequel, but in series form, reports ‘Variety’.
That’s when they contacted Nick Kroll, who’s known for his sketch comedy (in addition to the painfully funny take on adolescence ‘Big Mouth’), to kick around a ‘Part II’ that was four decades not in the making.
“There was something slightly more exciting about hearing from Mel Brooks, with all due respect to the wonderful folks at Searchlight,” Kroll said.
As per ‘Variety’, Kroll brought in Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen to develop the 21st century take on the original.

"History of the World Part II" begins today, with the first two episodes arriving on Hulu (read our review here). Over 40 years after Mel Brooks parodied epics of the Roman and biblical kind in "History of the World Part I," the sequel series broadens the horizons of historical comedy in more ways than one. Not only does the series dive into even more time periods, including the unfolding of the Russian Revolution, the struggles of ending the Civil War, and the times of William Shakespeare, but it also gets considerably raunchier than its predecessor and digs into more contemporary pop culture styling while also staying true to Brooks' comedic spirit.
Leading up to today's debut of "History of the World Part II," we spoke with stars, writers, and executive producers Nick Kroll and Ike Barinholtz (as well as the showrunner and director) about working with Mel Brooks, parodying "Curb Your Enthusiasm...

As the American treasure himself says in the opening credits, Mel Brooks is a hero to some, and merely a legend to others. He broke ground in irreverent social commentary with Blazing Saddles, and rewired the knobs in the monster’s brain for Young Frankenstein. Brooks’ Hulu TV-sketch-series-masquerading-as-a-film-sequel throws more jokes at the viewer than almost any comedy in the History of The World, Part II. Not all of them land squarely, though the ricochets inflict sufficient comic collateral damage.
There is a lot we can learn from an anthology sketch series. All of which is graded on a curveball. Like History of the World, Part I, the series is made up of short gags, like Marco Polo’s (Jake Johnson) impromptu gift-exchange on his first trip to China, longer one-off sequences, and a few continuing stories. The eight-episode series is Brooks’ first creative project since composing the score to...

Over 40 years after "History of the World Part I" hit theaters, a sequel is finally arriving in the form of a TV series on Hulu. Appropriately titled "History of the World Part II," the series follows in the footsteps of the legendary Mel Brooks by looking back at history with a contemporary comedic lens. Taking cues from the original movie, the series jumps around to different historical periods and events, such as the Biblical times of Jesus Christ, the unfolding of the Russian Revolution, the struggles of ending the Civil War, and many more. While some of the sketches are ongoing threads spread across eight episodes, there are also smaller bits involving Noah's Ark, Kublai Kahn, William Shakespeare, and Galileo.
What's great about "History of the World Part II" (watch the trailer here) is how it combines the classic style of Mel Brooks comedies with the contemporary humor of its creators.

Forty-two years ago, Mel Brooks delivered the perfectly titled sketch comedy movie History of the World Part I. At the end of the satirical and scatalogical look at history from cavemen to contemporary events, Brooks included a fake trailer for a sequel showcasing Hitler on Ice and Jews in Space. Never meant to be a real follow-up; I still would have people asking for the movie when I worked at Blockbuster back in the day. Now, decades later, the streaming wars have allowed this long fictional follow-up to become a reality thanks to a new generation of comedians ready to skewer events not featured in the original film. History of the World Part II, an eight episode series, continues the formula Mel Brooks made popular. Featuring a bevvy of comedians and celebrity cameos, this new look at history takes on events ranging from The Russian Revolution to the Civil War,...

History of the World, Part II began with a call from Mel Brooks to Nick Kroll.
“It’s the craziest thing in my life,” Kroll recalls, adding, “Mel Brooks is more important to me than anybody, so to get that call was like an out-of-body experience.” From there, Kroll reached out to Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinholtz and his writing partner David Stassen. Together, the foursome, with Brooks, have hatched an update to Brooks’ seminal 1981 film, The History of the World, Part 1. Now, 42 years later, Part II will make its debut on Hulu as a four-night, eight episode event beginning March 6.
Like its predecessor, the sketch series offers its audience a tour through history, though this time the 96-year-old Brooks stars alongside Kroll, Sykes, Barinholtz and a who’s who of guest stars. Among the latter are Pamela Adlon, Quinta Brunson, Dove Cameron, Danny DeVito, Jay Ellis, Josh Gad, Johnny Knoxville,...

“Most good sequels take at least 40 years to make,” joked executive producer Nick Kroll of his follow-up to 1981 Mel Brooks film History of the World, Part I. And indeed, 42 years later, History of the World, Part II has arrived from the team of Brooks, Kroll, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes and David Stassen, featuring a variety of sketches lampooning different periods of human history.
Brooks called Kroll with the idea of revisiting the project, which the star told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s L.A. premiere on Monday was “not only one of the highlights of my career, but really one of the highlights of my life. To get a call from your hero, not only just a call but then a call to say, ‘Would you help me make this thing?’ I still can’t imagine a higher honor — and frankly, a slightly frightening thing to try to...

Spoofs are all about volume. Deliver enough punchlines and there are almost guaranteed to be duds — but if you get enough big laughs, viewers will be too busy wheezing and wiping away tears to notice.
With the possible exception of the Airplane! guys, nobody knows this better than Mel Brooks. There are jokes in Blazing Saddles that fall flat. You mostly don’t remember them, because so much of it is still a riot. And because so much of Dracula: Dead and Loving It is stagnant, the few punchlines that land are rarely mentioned.
As Mel Brooks spoofs go, 1981’s History of the World, Part I is right in the middle. It has great bits — I quote “It is said that the people are revolting.” “You said it. They stink on ice!” in my head at least once a week — and flailing duds and stretches I think were memorable that...

History of the World, Part I is far from the most beloved Mel Brooks movie, even if “It’s good to be the king” is one of the more enduring lines he ever wrote. It is, however, by far the most in need of a sequel. After all, it’s been 42 years since Brooks concluded the film with teasers for History of the World, Part II, which was to include the sketches “Hitler on Ice,” “A Viking Funeral,” and, most memorably, “Jews in Space.” Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are stone-cold classics,...

It’s good to be the king! And it’s great to see Mel Brooks’ iconic farce finally getting the raunchy, riotous follow-up fans have been wanting since 1981 in History of the World, Part II. “We wanted to honor the film but also really honor Mel,” says David Stassen, who executive produces the eight-episode hoot with the legendary comic as well as Ike Barinholtz (The Afterparty), Nick Kroll (Big Mouth), and Wanda Sykes (The Upshaws). They succeeded. In the sequel series, which rolls out over four nights (March 6 through March 9 on Hulu), Brooks’ narration introduces historical vignettes with the same side-splitting mix of high- and low-brow humor, sight gags, and sly social commentary. Sketches that skewer the Civil War, the Russian Revolution, Shirley Chisholm’s presidential bid, and the story of Jesus provide the backbone of Part II, recurring throughout the season. Some of the stand-alone topics: Noah’s Ark, Freud,...

“Maximum Truth,” a political mockumentary starring Ike Barinholtz and Dylan O’Brien, has sold domestic rights to Momentum Pictures. The distribution company is aiming to release the film in theaters and online in the fall.
David Stassen directed “Maximum Truth,” which tells the story of a documentary crew following political grifter Rick Klingman as he teams up with a fellow “operative” named Simon to take down a rival congressional candidate. “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” star Kiernan Shipka and “What We Do in the Shadows” actor Mark Proksch also appear in the film.
“The on-screen comedic chemistry between Ike and Dylan is nothing short of hilarious, and we are excited to partner with them to bring this film to audiences nationwide,” said Ian Goggins, Momentum’s executive VP of global home entertainment.
Stassen, best known for “Central Intelligence,” “The Mindy Project” and the upcoming “History of the World: Part II,” also co-wrote the script with Barinholtz.

“History of The World: Part II” star Nick Kroll says the new Hulu series continues Mel Brooks’ legacy of “poking fun at those in power.”
“Mel’s ultimate goal was always to poke fun at those in power and how greedy and stupid they were,” Kroll said during the 2023 Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour on Saturday. “And so doing a show about history now at a time when we are reexamining the past, how things went down, it became a very easy through-line to just continue Mel’s legacy of poking fun at those in power.”
While the landscape of comedy has shifted in the 40 years since Brooks’ film “History of The World: Part I” was released, Kroll argues that comedians can “still say and do insane things.”
“They just have to be a little more thoughtful about how and why you’re saying them,” he added.

It’s a common refrain: Mel Brooks, the comedy mastermind behind “The Producers” and “Space Balls,” could never make a Mel Brooks movie in today’s climate. Well, Mel Brooks made a Mel Brooks series, Hulu’s “History of the World, Part II,” in this very climate.

Fortunately for Kroll, he and Brooks are very funny. As are the dozens of other comedians and comedic actors who jumped at the chance to work with Brooks, their shared comedy hero. And...

Back in 1981, between “High Anxiety” and “Spaceballs,” Mel Brooks released “History of the World Part I,” a parody of epic films where at least part of the joke was that there was never going to be a Part II. But after 40 years, that’s no longer the case, as “History of the World Part II,” a limited series follow-up to the film is set to premiere on Hulu March 6. The streamer announced the news January 13, in addition to releasing a teaser for the sketch series.
Similar to the film, which consisted of five segments spanning the Stone Age to the French Revolution, each episode of “History of the World Part II” will consist of several sketches taking place at different periods throughout human history. Brooks stars in each episode alongside Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, and Ike Barinholtz, but each episode will also feature special guest stars from a stacked lineup...
