Disney announced on Monday that its Golden Globe-nominated animated feature Wish, starring Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine, will begin streaming on Disney+ on April 3rd.
An original musical comedy co-written by Disney Animation chief Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, Wish takes us to the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha (DeBose), a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe — the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico (Chris Pine) — to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.
Lee’s co-director on the Academy Award-winning Frozen, Chris Buck, directed alongside Fawn Veerasunthorn, with the latter making her directorial debut. With Alan Tudyk playing Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino, the film also features the voices of Angelique Cabral,...

The release delays just keep coming: a week and some change after news broke that "Deadpool 3" will likely not make its original release date, Disney has officially announced that several other major 2024 titles will be shifted to later dates. Among them are the extraterrestrial Pixar flick "Elio" and Disney's latest live-action effort, "Snow White." Meanwhile, the Jonathan Majors-led Sundance thriller "Magazine Dreams" has been removed from the release schedule entirely -- two days after the actor was told he'll have to stand trial for domestic abuse charges. Two untitled Disney projects and one untitled Pixar project have also been shuffled around, with a February 2024 release moving to April and two 2025 releases falling off the schedule completely.
Both "Elio" and "Disney's Snow White" are being pushed back a whole calendar year, with the former making the jump from March 1, 2024 to June 13, 2025 and the latter no longer set to be...

The next year in film will bring us an incredibly vast and diverse range of new sci-fi flicks, whether coming from old savants like Bong Joon-ho, Denis Villeneuve, and Alex Garland, or genre debutants like Joshua Oppenheimer, Bruno Dumont, and even Francis Ford Coppola. Have you ever wondered if we’re alone in the universe? Evidence suggests life on other planets could exist. Still, we’ve yet to contact beings capable of communicating on a level similar to our native speech patterns. Chances are there’s intelligent life in the infinite that exists beyond our reach. Elio is about to encounter a federation of outer space creatures as a representative of Earth. It’s a big responsibility for such a young person, and Elio’s lie could land Earth in a compromising position in Disney and Pixar‘s Elio teaser trailer.
In today’s Elio teaser trailer, a case of mistaken identity finds a young boy, Elio, being beamed aboard an alien craft and placed before a gathering of creatures from beyond the stars. The aliens think Elio is the ambassador of Earth, but Elio knows better, or does he? Once his survival instinct kicks in,...

With the film industry as a whole taking a significant hit during the early years of the pandemic, one progressive change that has been stifled for the past couple years is studios hiring more directors from underrepresented backgrounds.
There are all sorts of data points repeated over the years by annual studies, like USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, which has repeatedly revealed how increasing diversity within filmmaking helps, not harms, business prospects. For example, the latest USC study shared that films by underrepresented directors earned marginally higher Metacritic scores than movies from white directors, and yet 2022 had a 6.6 percent decline in the number of the directors from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups who helmed the top 100 films of the year.
Though the upcoming slate of studio films does not seem like it will move the needle even back to 2021 numbers, where the percentage of directors from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups reached a 15-year high,...

Walt Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee regularly returned to the centennial of the Walt Disney Company during the studio’s massive panel devoted to the features they have coming up over the next several years. Innovation was the name of the game. With three years passing since the last time audiences were ensconced in Hall D23 both Walt Disney Animation and Pixar touted a desire to change with the times. Friday at Disney’s D23 Expo, Pixar bigwig Pete Docter announced a brand new Pixar movie, coming out in spring 2024, called “Elio.”
The plot revolves around Elio, a kid who can’t exactly fit in, who accidentally makes first contact with an alien species. He’s beamed up to the “Commutiverse,” a “sparking space-city” that is like the intergalactic Un that is described as “outer space like no one has seen before.” Director Adrian Molina, who was the co-director of Pixar’s charming “Coco,” directs “Elio” solo. And America Ferrera stars as Elio’s mom, who works at a secret government facility that is trying to decode a message from beyond the stars.
“I am so excited to be playing Olga in this movie. She’s a character who speaks to me in so many ways,” Ferrera said. Newcomer Yonas Kibreab voices Elio, and Mary Alice Drumm will produce for Pixar.

Inside Out is considered a high watermark for Pixar, a studio known for its crowd-pleasing films. The original earned glowing reviews and 857.6 million globally. It voice-starred Amy Poehler as Joy, one of six emotions belonging to 11-year-old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) as she moved across the country with her family.

Pixar’s jazz-inspired Soul won best animated film at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, with the award going to director Pete Docter, producer Dana Murray — and, apparently, co-director Kemp Powers.

There are moments, watching Disney-Pixar’s latest release Soul, in which the ambition of the Emeryville-based animation house astounds in ways it hasn’t quite achieved in years. Moments of abstract expression that feel entirely unique to its new film, and yet wholly in keeping with the DNA that has made Pixar the standard bearer for family animation. The movie, which makes its world premiere bow this evening at a socially distanced London Film Festival screening, tackles existential themes without ever disregarding its core, family audience. And when it’s at its best, Soul is a joy to behold.
What is it that defines us? Director Pete Docter’s new movie imagines a plane of existence called The Great Before, in which our personalities are determined before we’re ever sent to Earth to be born. A plane of existence in which every soul must find its spark of particular...

He’s been called Pixar’s “good-luck charm,” and that’s because to date, John Ratzenberger has done voice work for every Pixar film. The 71-year-old actor might forever be known to audiences as Cliff Clavin on “Cheers,” but to audiences who have grown up with these movies, he’s been a consistent voice for over 20 years. Ratzenberger returned to voice the villain The Underminer in the latest Pixar joint, “The Incredibles 2,” opening this Friday. And whether it’s a supporting part or a quick, Easter Egg cameo, Ratzenberger has always been there. Here’s a chronological list of each of those characters:
Hamm – “Toy Story,” “Toy Story 2,” “Toy Story 3”
By far Ratzenberger’s most well-known Pixar character, this porking piggy bank is chock-full of great one-liners and quips across the “Toy Story” trilogy, whether it’s trading jokes with Mr. Potato Head or making snide put downs about Andy’s neighbor Sid.

Composers John Powell and Germaine Franco took top honors at Wednesday night’s Screen Music Awards of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (Ascap) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Powell, composer of the Oscar-nominated score for “How to Train Your Dragon” and the new “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” received the Henry Mancini Award for his “outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of film and television music.”
Franco, songwriter and arranger of last year’s “Coco” who was also recently named “one of 15 Latinas who are changing the world” by Univision, received the Shirley Walker Award, given to a composer “whose achievements have contributed to the diversity of film and television music.”
Both composers spent more time talking about the composers in whose honor the awards were named, rather than about themselves or their own music. Before the ceremony, Powell told Variety that he met Mancini when...

Having explored the inner workings of human consciousness in Inside Out, the animation geniuses at Pixar turn their collective imaginations to the land of the dead in their latest offering, co-directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) and Adrian Molina. The result is Coco, a beautifully animated piece of work that has something genuinely moving to say about death, grief, memory and family, without ever feeling too sentimental.
The hero of the story is 12 year-old Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), a young Mexican boy who dreams of becoming a singer. There’s just one problem: his grandmother Imelda (Renée Victor) enforces a strict musical ban on his shoe-making family, because Miguel’s great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife and child – Miguel’s now ancient great grandmother,...

In certain ways, the May 2 CalArts Character Animation Producers’ Show resembled any number of other year-end showcases of undergrad work held by art schools nationwide. Students gathered to cheer on their classmates, as 22 student-created animation shorts were screened, with four of them winning special awards. Alumni and faculty mingled in the aisles, using the event as a de facto reunion.
Of course, most other schools’ programs do not fill up the DGA Theater in Hollywood, and most mingling alumni do not include the likes of Pixar’s Pete Docter catching up with students and offering notes afterward. And it was hard to miss the entire rows roped off for representatives of every major player in animation: Disney, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, DreamWorks, Netflix, Bento Box …. Begun in the 1980s, and slowly expanding in stature starting in the mid-’90s, CalArts’ showcase has evolved into something resembling a friendlier version of an NFL combine,...

Man, there were some great speeches at Sunday’s Oscars. Some were wordy and made grand points about the times we live in, like Best Director winner Guillermo del Toro. Others were simple and stood out because of a clever or memorable line like Allison Janney did when she won Best Supporting Actress. With that in mind, here’s a look at the six speeches that stood out the most during this year’s Oscar ceremony. Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post, and check out the full list of winners right here.

While none of the 2018 acting Oscars were awarded to people of color, diversity and representation remained a theme at the 90th annual ceremony. “The Shape of Water,” Guillermo del Toro’s love letter to anyone who has ever identified as an outsider, won four prizes, including the coveted Best Picture. “Growing up in Mexico, I thought this could never happen; it happens,” he said. “This is a door, kick it open and come in.”
Del Toro also claimed Best Director, becoming the fourth native of Mexico in five years to achieve the feat. Pixar’s “Coco” provided more reasons for Mexico to celebrate, nabbing Best Animated Feature (and a “Viva Latin America!” shoutout from presenter Oscar Isaac) and Best Original Song (“Remember Me”). As “Remember Me” co-writer Kristen Anderson-Lopez remarked of her fellow nominees, “Not only are we diverse, but we are close to 50/50 for gender representation. With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
45 Years (Andrew Haigh)
Andrew Haigh’s third feature as a director, 45 Years, is an excellent companion piece to its 2011 predecessor, Weekend. The latter examined the inception of a potential relationship between two men over the course of a weekend, whereas its successor considers the opposite extreme. Again sticking to a tight timeframe, the film chronicles the six days leading up to a couple’s 45th wedding anniversary. Though highly accomplished,...

When the Academy opened up voting for animated features to the membership at large and implementing preferential balloting, the balance of power shifted from indies to the big studios the first time in four years. This resulted in the final five nods for Pixar frontrunner “Coco,” GKids’ politically powerful “The Breadwinner,” the hand-painted “Loving Vincent,” and two surprising mainstream studio entries: “The Boss Baby” from DreamWorks and Blue Sky’s “Ferdinand.”
Indeed, one could argue that without the new rule changes and a Disney release last year, there likely would’ve been four indies joining “Coco.” Still, there were several positive takeaways: All five movies captured the zeitgeist in one way or another, and this marked the first time that two female directors were nominated in the same year: Nora Twomey for “The Breadwinner” and Dorota Kobiela for “Loving Vincent.” They joined previous nominees Marjane Satrap (“Persepolis”), Jennifer Yuh Nelson...

Here's the deleted opening song from Pixar's Coco...
Pixar’s delightful Coco is still playing in UK cinemas, as it prepares for its disc and download release in the Us later this month. And as part of the promotion for the release, directors Adrian Molina and Lee Unkrich have revealed that they originally envisaged an opening song for the film.
The pair told USA Today that the song was part of the film for “a number of years” during its development, and it sounds as though it was only deleted pretty late in the day.
They’ve now unveiled it as a nearly-completed deleted scene too, and here’s how the movie would originally have opened….

This past week saw a rogue’s gallery of Oscar contenders trek up the coast from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, which is still recovering from the double-whammy of three weeks of fires followed by cataclysmic mud slides. Jeff Bridges’ Montecito home was among the houses buried in mud; his SUV was found seven houses away, but his office and archives (complete with his “The Big Lebowski” sweater) were spared. Among the movies world premiering at the city’s annual International Film Festival Festival under the direction of Roger Durling was Bridges’ environmental documentary “Living in the Future’s Past,” and as always the local community welcomed a stream of Hollywood visitors for a series of illuminating tributes and panels.
