If Striking Distance Studios’ “Mastering Horror” docuseries wasn’t enough to tide you over until the release of The Callisto Protocol, then how about a horror podcast prequel? That’s exactly what you’re getting with Helix Station, a six-part series starring Gwendoline Christie, Kevin Durand and Michael Ironside. The first two episodes are out now.
Showrun and directed by Willie Block and Jake Emanuel, Helix Station takes place in the year 2320 (the same year as The Callisto Protocol), and centres around two skip tracers, Percy (Christie) and Kane (Ironside), as hunt down bounties. The pair eventually find their ship commandeered by Black Iron Prison officer Metzger (Kevin Durand), and soon find themselves in a once-in-a-lifetime job on Helix Station, hunting down a dangerous escaped criminal. Of course, the duo eventually learn that the derelict metropolis holds dark secrets about the true nature of the United Jupiter Company.

Exclusive: Em Haine (Deadpool) is set as a lead opposite Caitlin Kinnunen and Bella Ortiz in CW’s Our Ladies of Brooklyn (fka Untitled Urman/Rothrock/Weir Project), the drama pilot executive produced by Jennie Snyder Urman.
Written by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir and directed by Tessa Blake, Our Ladies of Brooklyn is a dramedy about two millennial nuns – Sister Francis (Kinnunen), a devout true believer, and Sister Maggie (Ortiz), a new arrival who has yet to take her final vows – who start as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spiritual journey to understand their own faith and place in the Catholic Church.
Haine will play Ellie, Sister Frances’ little sister who arrives out of nowhere to wreak havoc. On the surface, she might seem like a wholesome Midwesterner with a badass edge. But beneath it all, she’s an unparalleled con artist with a heart of gold.

Karen Robinson, Joe Regalbuto, Kathleen Chalfant, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper and Abubakr Ali have been confirmed as cast members of The CW’s untitled millennial nun dramedy pilot, directed by Tessa Blake and written by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir.
Described by Blake as a “subversive comedy,” the untitled pilot stars Caitlin Kinnunen (“The Prom”) and Bella Ortiz (“American Carnage”). Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon opened today’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with an energetic rendition of “Dancing In The Streets,” strutting like Jagger on the barricaded, crowd-free New York City block. Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, “The Prom” begins with a quartet of self absorbed actors from New York. When their latest Broadway show closes after being ravaged by critics, they need a boost to their career and images. Enter Emma (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman), a high school senior from a small Midwest town, who makes national headlines when her school forbids her from attending prom with her girlfriend. The big city actors descend on the town in hopes of changing minds and generating positive press. And they do it with good old fashioned song and dance. After having won six Primetime Emmys for his TV work in the past decade, Ryan Murphy is now aiming for the Oscars with his upcoming Netflix musical “The Prom.” The streaming giant dropped some official — and very glittery — stills from the film on Wednesday, which will be released on Dec. 11. The all star cast includes three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep, 10-time Emmy winner James Corden, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, Emmy winner Keegan-Michael Key, two-time Tony nominee Andrew Rannells, Tony nominee Ariana DeBose, Emmy winner Kerry Washington and newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman.
An adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical of the same name, the film follows four eccentric Broadway stars who are in desperate need of career revivals. They find a stage and a cause when they hear about Emma Nolan (Pellman), a high school student in a small Indiana town who is forbidden from bringing her girlfriend Alyssa (DeBose) to prom.

Call them predictions, opinions or hopes, but here are my thoughts on this year’s Tony Awards races. As usual, the roster of nominees includes a mix of consensus categories (famous last words) and the up-for-grabs. Voting closes today, so the curtain is all but drawn on the campaigning and jockeying and strategizing. Nothing left but the arguments, so add mine to the mix.
By the way, this year Tony Award administrators have pledged to crack down on voters who, in years past, might not have paid strict adherence to the rule that requires voters to see every production in a category. The administration has been keeping track of who saw what, and will disqualify fakers.

It might be a bit much to say that Beth Leavel’s roster of Broadway credits – The Drowsy Chaperone, Elf, Young Frankenstein, among many others – has been leading inexorably to the show for which she’s again been Tony nominated, but neither could anyone doubt that the The Prom is anything but a big, fluffy corsage gifted at just the right moment, perfectly chosen. In a part literally written for her, Leavel plays Broadway diva Dee Dee Allen, a showstealer from way back.
By now, you probably know the story. A gang of Broadway veterans, looking for a little good press after a big flop, invade smalltown USA to speak out for a high school girl who has been banned from taking her girlfriend to the high school prom. Cultures clash, lessons are learned, and The Prom has been embraced by audiences and critics alike.

“Original musicals are my favorite thing to do,” gushes Tony winner Casey Nicholaw. He won a Tony Award for directing the Broadway smash “Book of Mormon,” and earned his 11th Tony nomination for this season’s big-hearted original musical “The Prom.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Though he has had great success with film-to-stage adaptations like “Aladdin” and “Mean Girls,” Nicholaw gravitates towards original works for the freedom they provide. “You don’t have any guidelines,” he says, “so you can kind of go wherever you want.” So when producer Jack Viertel called him with an outrageous idea for a show where vain Broadway actors invade a small mid-western town to help a young lesbian in need, Nicholaw simply thought “Wow, that’s a fun premise” and dove in.

The dueling tones of the narrative proved the most difficult aspect of the show to nail down.

“I have a very strong inner Dee Dee Allen,” reveals Tony winner Beth Leavel. Dee Dee is the gloriously vain Broadway diva that Leavel portrays in “The Prom.” Her impressive comedic chops earned the actress a nomination for Lead Actress in a Musical, marking her third Tony nomination to date. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“It’s so much fun to play someone who leads with such narcissism,” admits Leavel. Dee Dee is the type of Broadway broad who carries Tonys around in her purse and hoards the spotlight, onstage or off. Far from a one dimensional character however, the role isn’t all jokes and hi-jinks. Along the way “she finds her heart” and discovers what is most important to her.

“When you’re starting with a completely blank slate, it’s definitely more of a challenge,” admits book writer and lyricist Chad Beguelin. Beguelin and composer Matthew Sklar picked up a 2019 Tony Awards nomination for Best Score (with Beguelin landing an additional nomination for Book of a Musical) for the heartwarming musical comedy “The Prom.” The duo spoke with Gold Derby about the challenges and delights of working on an original musical. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Beguelin and Sklar were previous Tony nominees for their work on “The Wedding Singer” and their adaptation of “Elf” was a holiday hit, but “The Prom” marks the team’s first Broadway musical which is not based on a pre-existing property. They agree that one of the biggest changes to their process in this regard is many more rewrites. “There’s no template,” says Beguelin, “there’s a lot of sitting in a room just spitballing ideas.

Refresh for updates The lush, very-downtown musical Hadestown topped the Tony Awards nominations list with 14, with the more traditional jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud coming in at second with 12, a one-two punch as clear a sign as any that Tony voters are in a very expansive mood this year.
At #3, Tootsie has 11 nominations; The Ferryman 9 and Beetlejuice 8.
But the big surprise were the no-votes in the Best Play category for both To Kill A Mockingbird and Network, particularly for Aaron Sorkin’s gloriously reviewed and wildly popular adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel. That omission might be the single biggest Tony snub in years, if not decades.
Deadline will examine that omission and other surprises in a complete analysis of the Tony nominations by Deadline theater critic Greg Evans, coming shortly. Check back soon.

“I’ve learned a lot about my own power,” declares Caitlin Kinnunen of her experience in the new Broadway musical “The Prom.” Her increased sense of self confidence mirrors the confidence her character Emma finds in the show. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
In “The Prom,” Emma is a high school student who just wants to take her girlfriend to the prom. But closed minds in her small town in Indiana cancel the dance rather than allow a same-sex couple to participate. The story makes headlines and grabs the attention of a quartet of vain, out of work Broadway actors who swoop in to save the day… and gobble up some positive PR.

Last Thanksgiving, Broadway’s The Prom had just recently opened at the Longacre Theatre when it took part in the annual Macy’s parade. Performing the musical’s big finale number “Time To Dance,” the show essentially introduced itself to a nationwide audience that holiday with a big, sweet kiss that, in its own way, made history: The musical about two high school girls battling a bigoted school board for permission to attend the prom together, became the Thanksgiving parade’s first performance to feature a same-sex kiss.
I wrote in Deadline the following day that The Prom and its two young actresses, Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla, had upstaged Santa Claus himself. I also spoke director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw then, and he seemed both overwhelmed by the good wishes that began pouring in after The Kiss, and maybe a little disturbed by some hate email reported by a few cast members.

The new musical “The Prom” won over industry folks with its big heart and bevy of Broadway insider jokes. But many wondered where each member of the ensemble cast would compete at this year’s Tony Awards. While the Tony Administration Committee decided Brooks Ashmanskas would be the sole Lead Actor contender, they went the opposite route with the women. Beth Leavel and Caitlin Kinnunen will each compete for Lead Actress in a Musical. So can they both land bids?
Leavel, a Tony winner for “The Drowsy Chaperone,” plays vain Broadway diva Dee Dee Allen. She and her fellow thespians head to a small town in Indiana to help Emma (Kinnunen) bring her girlfriend to the high school prom…and scoop up some much needed press in the process. Not even Santa Claus or gusty winds could compete. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade yesterday drew the kind of post-parade buzz usually reserved for balloon blunders or temperature woes. This year, Broadway stole the show, with the parade’s first-ever same-sex kiss capping a performance from The Prom, the charming musical from director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw. Based loosely on a real-life incident, The Prom follows a troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars of a certain age who swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom.
The musical’s big finale, bringing together the entire cast in song and dance, hits its high note when the girls (played by Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla) embrace and kiss, a bit of tenderness captured on live TV that immediately became a social media “Did you see that?” moment.

There was something worth braving the cold weather to see earlier today in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Josh Lamon, co-star of the Broadway musical The Prom, has tweeted about what he said was the first Lgbtq kiss during the processional parade. The lip lock took place between the show’s leads, Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabella McCalla. The smooch took place on live television, a nice break from the branded floats and lip syncing that dominates the venerable parade.

Your prom probably didn’t have a glorious gaggle of Broadway troupers and their trunk loads of self-regard and narcissism gumming things up for your rite of passage – more’s the pity – but in some ways I’d guess Broadway’s musical The Prom isn’t so unlike the one you lived through way back when. The build-up was more fun than the event, right?
Inspired by an actual event – and the inspired is apt – The Prom is the latest razzle-dazzle show-biz love fest from director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw, who applied the same glitz and show-biz glitter to Mean Girls, Aladdin and, more to the point here, Something Rotten!, that great mash-up of the Bard and Broadway. Comparisons won’t do The Prom much good – Something Rotten it isn’t, but it tries.
