"June is on the case!" Shout Studios has unveiled a trailer for the indie comedy titled Drugstore June, made by filmmaker Nicholaus Goossen, along with actress Esther Povitsky co-writing the script. It's set to open in limited theaters (NY & LA) starting in February. After the pharmacy in her small town is robbed, a girl who still lives at home with her parents takes matters into her own hands to solve the crime, while at the same time trying to get over her ex-boyfriend and become more of an adult. Described as “it's small, funny, and lands smack in the middle of a favorite genre: off-center charmer turns world upside down." Starring Esther Povitsky as the titular June, joined by Beverly D'Angelo, James Remar, Haley Joel Osment, Jackie Sandler, Miranda Cosgrove, Danny Griffin, Brandon Wardell, Bobby Lee, Matt Walsh. “Dollface” is a comedy series about female solidarity with Jules Wiley (Kat Dennings) playing the protagonist role. Produced by ABC Signature, this show has something surreal about it. It reveals what life is like for Jules, who suffers heartbreak after getting dumped by her longtime boyfriend. The character deals with the challenges of rejoining female social circles and rekindling lost friendships.
The plot takes unusual twists and turns to tell the story of female friendships in the modern world. Unlike most romantic comedies, the protagonist doesn’t seek comfort in a new love interest but aims to mend broken friendships. As a result, the storyline has a fresh take on girl power and sisterhood spiced with a bit of humor.
Film pundits and viewers showered mostly positive reviews upon the show. Some reviewers praised the main cast’s role in making the show a joy to watch. Others felt it...

Dollface is over for good at Hulu.
The streaming service has canceled the Kat Dennings-fronted comedy from creator Jordan Weiss after two seasons, according to TV Line.
The first season of Dollface burst onto screens in November 2019, landing a renewal in early 2020.
Hulu touted the success of the series at the time, but the second season was delayed due to Covid-19.
It finally returned in February, but it's unclear whether the show didn't perform as well as expected, or if there is some other reason for the decision.
The initial season did have a lot of buzz, but the TV landscape is filled with content these days, especially with the rise of streaming.

“Dollface” has been canceled after two seasons at Hulu, Variety has confirmed.
The news comes around three months after the release of Season 2, which dropped in February in its entirety. The series starred Kat Dennings, Brenda Song, Shay Mitchell and Esther Povitsky.
In Season 2, Jules (Kat Dennings) and her best friends must balance keeping their group together as they navigate work, love, and a deeper relationship with each of themselves.
Season 1 of “Dollface” aired in 2019. It was renewed in January 2020 but production on the second season was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Both seasons consisted of 10 episodes.
The show received mixed reviews from critics, with the two seasons averaging a 54 critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it does have a 78 audience approval rating. In his review of the first season for Variety, Daniel D’Addario wrote:
“Its fantasies aren’t fanciful enough to compel us, and its reality seems perpetually elided.

After a years-long hiatus, Jules (Kat Dennings), Madison (Brenda Song), Stella (Shay Mitchell), and Izzy (Esther Povitsky) are back in Hulu's "Dollface," which returns for its sophomore season on Feb. 11. Based on creator Jordan Weiss's college writing sample, "Dollface" follows protagonist Jules as she's forced to reconnect with her college friends after a sudden breakup. "It's bizarre to have grown up with these characters. It's been nice to be able to put my own experiences into both seasons, almost like a time capsule," Weiss tells Popsugar. "I've been single working on the show, I've been dating, and now I'm in a serious relationship, and it's funny the way my perspective changes, but I try to let my friendships be a huge part of my life no matter what."
"Friendship stories are universal regardless of gender. That said, I don't think there's any reason not to appreciate the show specifically through the female lens.

Now, finally, the ladies are back and just as honest as ever. In fact, the opening episode of the sophomore installment even addresses the Covid-19 of it all and reveals that, following the events of the crazy first round, the squad is actually closer than ever. “We’ve seen that in these two years, the girls have stuck together, strengthened their bonds together, and no one knows where they are at the end of it, really,” adds Dennings. They have sheltered in place, shared their recipes, Zoomed their way through the...

We have some good news for fans of two of Hulu's best comedy series.
The streamer has officially picked up a third season of The Great.
Ten new episodes have been ordered.
In season two of The Great, Catherine (Elle Fanning) finally takes the Russian throne for her own - but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it's nothing compared to the realities of 'liberating' a country that doesn't want to be.

With only occasional historical facts, the series stars Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
The Great is created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara and executive produced by Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Echo Lake's Brittany Kahan Ward,...

Certain periods in history are so ripe for dramatization, it’s hard to believe they haven’t gotten the treatment sooner.
Shortly after surviving a bout with the flu during the 1918 pandemic, negotiating the Treaty of Versailles, and cutting short a train tour to promote the formation of the peacekeeping League of Nations due to health issues, President Woodrow Wilson suffered a serious stroke. Protective of her husband and his power, First Lady Edith Wilson shielded him from intruders and helped him run the country from his bedside while he recovered.

Dollface will be returning for a second season despite production delays caused by the Covid pandemic.
The Kat Dennings-fronted comedy launched in November 2019 and the streamer called it one of its “best performing new binge series for subscriber engagement” at the time. It was renewed for a second season in January 2020.
However, there had been concern that Dollface might be the latest scripted series to have it renewal reversed due to Covid.
Craig Erwich, President of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, assures Deadline that this is not the case and said “we have a plan to bring it back”.
“That was a show that was impacted by Covid, it was one of the top shows we launched in [2019] and I’m excited to have it come back for season 2,” he added.

Titled after the cringe-worthy nickname Jules' (Kat Dennings) ex-boyfriend gave her during their five-year relationship, Dollface proves to be a perfect weekend binge.
It has its flaws and imperfections, but it's a strong and light-hearted depiction of female friendship and seeks to show the importance of maintaining other relations beyond romantic relationships.
The basic premise of the show centers around Jules and her attempt to rebuild her college friendships with Madison (Brenda Song) and Stella (Shay Mitchell), which she failed to foster during her relationship with Jeremy (Conner Hines).
Though the intentions and larger message of the show start strong and waver a bit toward the end, we still are left with an entertaining 10 episodes.

For the most part, the 10-episode first season just squeaks by thanks to its relatable sense of humor and hit-or-miss asides that can either take you out of the story completely or serve its purpose in being an entertaining attempt at bringing the chaos of imagination to life. But mostly, the show fails to do the one thing it's meant to - be an entertaining look at how difficult it can be navigating modern relationships, primarily among women.
