Note: This post contains spoilers for "The Wire."
Is "The Wire" still one of the greatest TV shows of all time? David Simon's sprawling, complex portrait of Baltimore has appeared on multiple "best of" lists over the years, popping up near the top of masterpiece-filled rankings from outlets like Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Empire, and more. The HBO series, which really couldn't have worked before that channel's dominance in early 2000s, currently ranks sixth-highest of all time on IMDb, and despite never winning an Emmy, it's earned a Peabody, DGA and WGA awards, and a spot on the American Film Institute's Television Programs of The Year list three different times.
"The Wire" is no doubt a work of storytelling genius, and much of its tremendous effect is cumulative. The series starts at the street level of Maryland's biggest city, examining the effects of drugs and gang life before refocusing...

On Nov. 6, 2001, the Kiefer Sutherland-starrer from Imagine Television bowed on Fox in the 9 p.m. hour, kickstarting a franchise that aired for more than a decade. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
No question, there are some eerie similarities between the premiere episode of 24 and the terrible events of Sept 11. The tightly woven drama includes vague warnings of terrorist activity, an assassination plot and an imperiled airliner. But instead of causing discomfort, 24 grabs you by the collar and simply won’t let go. Few shows are ever this riveting.
A creation of exec producers Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, 24 employs a couple of novel but extremely effective story telling techniques. First, it unravels its story in real time, with each hour on the screen representing an hour in the life of its characters. Second, it makes frequent use of split-screen shots, showing different angles of the same...

Megan Kingsbury and her sister Madeline used to spend hours together, taking long walks, relaxing by the lake, or trying out new coffee shops in the towns where they lived, a few hours apart, in Minnesota. Both voracious readers, they’d chat about their favorite books or about Madeline’s two young children, ages five and two. Even when they were apart, they communicated constantly. “We talked every day, multiple times a day,” Kingsbury says. “We were each other’s first call for any type of news, good or bad.

Former Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer was accused by an Arizona woman of sexual assault and choking her unconscious, according to court filings in which the woman accused Bauer of raping her and getting her pregnant in late 2020.
According to USA Today, which first reported on the court filings, the woman filed the civil complaint against him in December and then amended it recently. Bauer denied the allegations in the court records and countersued the woman, accusing her of fraud, extortion and fabricating her pregnancy.

‘Border’ Star Josefin Neldén to Play Sally Bauer in Frida Kempff’s ‘The Swedish Torpedo’ (Exclusive)
Frida Kempff (“Winter Buoy”) is set to direct “The Swedish Torpedo,” a period film inspired by the life of Sally Bauer, the first Scandinavian to swim across the English Channel in 1939. The prominent Nordic cast is led by Josefin Neldén, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, as well as Lisa Carlehed (“The Emigrants”).
Produced by David Herdies and Erik Andersson at Momento Film, the film will start shooting in August in Sweden, Estonia, Belgium and England.
“Five years ago I didn’t know who Sally Bauer was and even less what she had achieved. Five days ahead of the outbreak of WWII she swam across the English Channel,” said Kempff I feel this is a story that needs to be told, about a woman who accomplished the impossible and shattered both social norms and world records.”
Neldén, who will play Bauer, said she feels “such a strong connection to Sally’s dreams, life and ambitions.

Ken Bruce has expressed his concerns over a “struggle” related to his new Greatest Hits Radio stint.
The radio DJ uttered his final words on BBC Radio 2 last month, after 31 years with the station. He starts his new show with Bauer on Monday (3 April), where he will present the 10am to 1pm show.
Speaking to Pa ahead of the new role, Bruce admitted he’s still trying to get used to his change in routine due to the new working hours; he previously hosted the 9:30am to 12pm show for Radio 2.
“I’m struggling to work my day out,” he said, adding: “I think I’m going to be going to bed an hour later because I just have to squeeze everything into the remaining hours of the day.”

Directed by Joe Bauer, who also crafted the script with Rita Artmann, Australiens has the following synopsis (courtesy of Bauer): At the age of 10, Australian-born Andi Gibson had what she describes as a close encounter with a flying saucer. Naturally, everyone assumed she was bonkers. That is until one notable evening, 17 years later, when an airborne extra-terrestrial armada launches a nation-wide assault on Andi’s home country and at the same time, for unspecified reasons, kidnaps her mother.

This article contains spoilers for 24 and episodes 1 and 2 of Rabbit Hole.
Since Keifer Sutherland played one of the most iconic American heroes of television in 24, the established actor has tried to recapture the magic he did as CTU (Counter Terrorism Unit) agent Jack Bauer. With a few short stops on the big screen, Sutherland’s television resume was padded with stints on Designated Survivor, The Fugitive, and The First Lady, often trading in his typical role of saving the president, for playing the commander-in-chief.
Yet nothing matched the audience numbers or spoke to fans as much as his eight-plus seasons on 24. Until now.
While The Fugitive certainly had life or death situations and Designated Survivor had political espionage, they lacked the same kind of intrigue as the Fox drama that started it all. Rabbit Hole seems like a great companion piece for 24 as the twists, turns, and action-centered plot feels...

“Rabbit Hole” stars Kiefer Sutherland as a corporate espionage consultant who must go on the run after being framed for murder by a shadowy but powerful group, a character that is used to being on the receiving end of punches, quite unlike the character he’s best known for on “24.”
The Paramount+ series pairs Sutherland with “Crazy, Stupid Love,” “This is Us” and “WeCrashed” writer-directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. When they pitched him on a series that’s a throwback to ’70s conspiracy thrillers “Three Days of the Condor” and “Marathon Man” and “The Parallax View,” he was fully on board. “I’m so lucky that they called me first,” Sutherland told TheWrap ahead of the series premiere on March 26.
“24” fans will be pleased to see the actor back in thriller territory, but his “Rabbit Hole” character John Weir is very different from Jack Bauer. For one thing, it...

Amazon Prime Video is exploring more global franchise opportunities following the success of the Russo Brothers’ Citadel.
James Farrell, the streamer’s VP, International, told a Series Mania audience that it is “highly likely” his non-u.S. team will seek more Citadel-like universes across both scripted and unscripted. A Tomb Raider movie and TV series penned by Phoebe Waller-Bridge are already reported to be in the works.
“It’s such a cool way to take [subscribers] on a journey and no one has really done it before,” said Farrell.
From the Russo’s Agbo, Midnight Radio, Cattleya and Amazon Studios, the spy thriller is airing as three versions from the U.S., India and Italy, starring the likes of Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The U.S. version drops next month.
The idea was born from a conversation between Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke and the Russos, according to Farrell,...

Kiefer Sutherland is best known for playing Jack Bauer in "24," the defining TV drama of George W. Bush's presidency. Few other series from that time -- as dramatized by YouTuber and sports writer Jon Bois in his classic video "I Wish Everyone Else Was Dead" -- capture the country's reverence for and fear of its own power as effectively. Sutherland would love to step into Bauer's shoes again too. After all, he had a great time on the long-running series, once telling Collider that he compares his experience acting on "24" to the training regimen of an Olympic runner.
"When I got to do '24,' I got to work every day," he says. "I feel that my knowledge of the craft of acting grew exponentially during that time period." The success of "24" opened new doors for Sutherland. Game director Hideo Kojima hired him to...

It's another action series for Kiefer Sutherland, and honestly, good for us. We know it's what he does best. The "24" alum will star in a new Paramount+ series called "Rabbit Hole" — and the thriller's second trailer has just been released.
In the sneak peek, we become immersed in another action thriller in which a spy tackles disinformation and the overarching powers of government in the throes of a fight for American democracy. The trailer does well to keep you mostly in the dark aside from the show's general gist, but it seems that will aid in the intrigue they're setting up. The first look is an intense, fast-paced thrill, so it looks like no matter what, it'll be fun to jump down the rabbit hole of "Rabbit Hole."

With Major League Wrestling making its debut tonight on Reelz, the ad-supported cable channel hopes to recreate the impossible. Launched in 2006 as Reelz Channel, then best known as home to Leonard Maltin’s “Maltin on Movies” and hosting the Visual Effects Society Awards, it went through many iterations — until recently, none terribly successful. A year ago, it ranked a dim 51 in cable primetime among its key demo for advertising, adults 25-54.
And then, a miracle. On July 22, 2022, Reelz premiered “On Patrol Live,” its revival of the format behind canceled A&e hit “Live P.D.” Today, Reelz is No. 19 and its year-to-year ratings rose a whopping 274 percent

A Justice Department search of Joe Biden’s Reboboth Beach home did not turn up any documents with classified markings, according to the president’s personal attorney.
The search on Wednesday was conducted “in coordination and cooperation” with Biden’s legal team, attorney Bob Bauer said in a statement. The search lasted from 8:30 Am Et to noon.
While no documents with the classified markings were found, the DOJ “took for further review some materials and handwritten notes that appear to relate” to Biden’s time as vice president, Bauer said.
Last month, the DOJ seized six items with classified markings from Biden’s Wilmington residence after a search there. Some of the documents were from his time in the Senate and some of which were from his tenure as vice president. That search, too, was done in cooperation with the DOJ.

Ken Bruce listeners are worried about the fate of his beloved quiz after he announced his BBC departure.
On Tuesday (17 January), the veteran radio host said that he had decided to step away from the corporation, where he has been employed for 45 years.
Bruce has hosted the 9:30am to 12pm weekday show on BBC Radio 2 since 1990, and became one of the best-loved hosts, in part thanks to PopMaster, a game that tests listeners’ pop knowledge.
The DJ introduced the quiz in 1998, and it typically takes place at around 10.30pm every night.
Following news of Bruce’s departure from the BBC, many have lamented the potential loss of PopMaster.
“I'm in a right sulk about Ken Bruce. Who gets custody of PopMaster?” @jothekendall wrote, with writer Kirsty Bosley adding: “Bloody hell, Ken. PopMaster isn’t as good with someone else’s voice.”

Update: The Los Angeles Dodgers are releasing controversial pitcher Trevor Bauer.
The former Cy Young winner was designated for assignment by the team today in a widely expected move.. Bauer was reinstated from a two-year suspension by an arbitrator last month. He was accused of sexual assault by a woman to precipitate the Major League Baseball suspension. Bauer has vehemently claimed the relationship was consensual.
“The Dodgers organization believes that allegations of sexual assault or domestic violence should be thoroughly investigated, with due process given to the accused,” the Dodgers said in a statement. “From the beginning, we have fully cooperated with Major League Baseball’s investigation and strictly followed the process stipulated under MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Two extensive reviews of all available evidence in this case — one by Commissioner [Rob] Manfred and another by a neutral arbitrator — concluded that Mr. Bauer’s...

Over the course of eight seasons, a TV movie, and a 12-episode event series, audiences spent a lot of time connecting with the Jack Bauer character on 24. Sometimes flawed and vulnerable, other times seemingly invincible, the character resonated with Americans who were coming to terms with a post-9/11 world and found his heroism to be cathartic. But that’s just our interpretation of the character’s appeal. What does Kiefer Sutherland, who starred as Bauer, think about his character’s appeal? Well, he told us it’s hard for him to say, and that different things appeal to different fans, but he talked about some of the things he personally found interesting about the character. Full Disclosure: I never watched the original 24. Not because I wasn't interested, or because I was turned off by what little I did see. It just happened to premiere during a period of time in the 00s when I really wasn't much of a TV watcher. That said, I'm familiar with the show's conventions, and I did end up becoming a fan of the show's cousin, Homeland, on Showtime. So I walked into this Pilot episode for 24: Legacy with no real expectations or baggage from the Kiefer Sutherland iteration of the series.
It was pretty great.
The episode doesn't waste any time setting things up, but rather it starts things off at a full sprint. Within about 90 seconds we see a home being raided, a man being interrogated- and executed- by mysterious baddies, and our first glimpse of the show's protagonist. The machinations of the show's plot become clear right away,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the most shocking TV twist of the 21st century and why? (Warning: Here be spoilers. Lots of them.)

The saintly Teri Bauer dying at Nina’s hands in the “24” first-season finale. That twofold trauma of loss and betrayal has given me such trust issues that I now suspect every person around Kiefer Sutherland’s President Tom Kirkman on “Designated Survivor” of being a mole. Except for the awful son who is too stupid to be evil. The most shockingly bad twist that still makes me want to burn my “Sandcastles in the Sand” cassingle was the reveal at...

Tick, tock, tick, tock… Tony!
Carlos Bernard has signed on to reprise his signature role as Tony Almeida on a recurring basis in Fox’s forthcoming 24: Legacy reboot, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Tony was killed off in Season 5, only to be resurrected — and rebranded as a villain — at the start of Season 7. He was last seen being carted off to jail in the Season 7 finale, although he popped up two years ago in a special feature in the Live Another Day Blu-Ray set. The quasi-short film, 24: Solitary, chronicled Tony’s life in prison, including his efforts to break out.

Is there hope for Jack Bauer to appear in the new incarnation of 24?
The cast and crew of 24: Legacy took to the San Diego Comic Con to release some of the details about this revived version of the hit series.
A big question was always going to surround Jack Bauer and whether he would make an appearance.
Thankfully, there's hope. Just ask executive producer, Manny Coto.
"You never know when those worlds may intersect,” Coto teased, later adding, “I think all of us really want to finish that story.”
As great as it would be to see Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, this new show should try stand on its own, at least initially.
The Walking Dead's Corey Hawkins had much to say about his role on this iconic brand.
He described his character as a new hero, but was quick to mention that Eric has some flaws.
