CBS has ordered three new series from this year’s crop of pilots.
The network has handed series orders to Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; The Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth; and the Wayans family comedy, which now is known as Poppa’s House.
Related: 2023 CBS Pilots & Series Orders
The trio will air during the 2023-24 season and will be joined by Tracker, starring Justin Hartley, which formerly was known as The Never Game and was ordered to series in December.
CBS isn’t specifying episode orders, particularly given the current writers strike, but given that all three come from its own studio, the network can be flexible.
It comes after CBS made some space for new titles after axing East New York and True Lies on Tuesday, though it reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., instead bringing the drama back for a seventh and final season.

Halle Berry wasn’t immediately sold on the idea of a “Boomerang” reboot.
The 1992 romantic comedy, which starred Berry, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Givens, told the tale of cocky ad executive and insatiable ladies’ man Marcus (Murphy) who meets his match in his new boss Jacqueline (Givens) — an exec who treats him the same way he has treated his conquests around the city. Berry played Jacqueline’s quiet assistant Angela, who he eventually falls in love with. It was a role that launched her career.
So, when “Boomerang” TV series creator Lena Waithe approached the Oscar winner with the idea, she was hesitant at first. Waithe’s pitch was so good, though, that Berry ended up being the co-executive producer of the project.
“She came to me and she said, ‘Hal, I really want to redo “Boomerang” and I was like, no,” Berry told the audience with a laugh as...

Eddie Murphy’s 1992 romantic comedy “Boomerang” begat Bet’s new sequel series, which doesn’t share its predecessor’s outrageous brand of humor. Instead, the new “Boomerang” is the epitome of Millennial cool — stylish and ambitious, but not willing to be defined in any traditional way.
In the original film, womanizing ad exec Marcus Graham (Eddie Murphy) has the tables turned on him by his co-worker Jacqueline (Robin Givens), who then becomes his superior. Eventually, he falls for the talented artist Angela (Halle Berry). At the time, the film was a revelation of representation — depicting black excellence in a hilarious, heightened environment and boasting a killer supporting cast, including Martin Lawrence, David Alan Grier, Grace Jones, John Witherspoon, Eartha Kitt, and Chris Rock.
Berry joins forces with Lena Waithe (“The Chi”) to produce the Bet sequel series, in which Marcus Graham’s grown daughter Simone (Tetona Jackson) and Jacqueline’s...

Fans of the 1992 romantic comedy “Boomerang” who are looking to see the original film’s cast appear on Bet’s upcoming sequel series shouldn’t hold their breath.
Well, no, you might see executive producer Halle Berry reprising her role. But as far as everyone else goes? We’ll have to wait and see, because Berry hasn’t asked her former co-stars to appear on Lena Waithe’s updated take on “Boomerang.”
“You might see me at some point,” Berry told reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour Monday, with a little laugh.

Lena Waithe has praised Viacom-owned Bet for speaking the same language as her on the half-hour comedy Boomerang. Waithe and Halle Berry are exec producing the remake of the 1992 movie, in which Berry starred alongside Eddie Murphy. They are joined on the team by by Dime Davis and Ben Cory Jones, who is showrunner on the series from Paramount Television and Bet Networks.
“Most of the shows I do are being pushed through a white filter. The most exciting thing about Bet and Paramount is that we speak the same language,” Waithe said Monday at TCA. “There is no, ‘Well can you have more joy in that moment of black pain’ – I don’t have to do that. That’s no shade at other partners I work for but the best thing is working with people who look like me and trust me. Black and honest as hell.”

The 1992 romantic comedy Boomerang was the last big hit of Eddie Murphy’s remarkable 10-year run as one of the world’s biggest movie stars. In it, Murphy plays Marcus Graham, a commitment-phobic ad executive with impossibly high standards for his conquests (he rejects one gorgeous woman because her feet have bunions), who falls into a love triangle with the similarly ruthless Jacqueline (Robin Givens) and the sweet Angela (Halle Berry). The film isn’t one of the best of that period for Murphy. But it was one of the...

There are plenty of questions to be asked about what’s in store for television in the year 2019. Will Netflix be able to keep up with the scale of production they’ve established recently? Is there a physical limit to how many series Ryan Murphy can make at one time? What exactly is Apple’s plan for their original series, really?
One thing that’s known for sure: There’s going to be some really exciting stuff to watch (however you might end up watching it). From limited series we’ll cherish for their brief time on screen to shows we hope last for decades, 2019 looks like a repository for bold ideas and innovative storytelling, with major creative forces like Damon Lindelof, Jordan Peele, Ava DuVernay, Alex Garland, Patty Jenkins, Mimi Leder, and Jemaine Clement poised to bring their unique visions to the screen.

"I'm starting this crew... And I'd love for you to be in it." Shout Factory + Showtime have debuted a trailer for the film All Styles, a feature dance drama starring "So You Think You Can Dance: Season 10" winner Du-Shaunt "Fik-Shun" Stegall in his first major acting role. "Fik-Shun" plays a talented hip-hop dancer from Las Vegas named Brandon, who is heading off to college. He decides to put together a ragtag crew of dancers, featuring all different style (hence the title), to compete in a competition against his former friends. This also stars Keon Motakhaveri, Tetona Jackson, James Moses Black, Heather Morris, Erica Klein, Hokuto "Hok" Konishi, Taylor Pierce, and Raymond "Nasty Ray" Mora. This concept isn't that original, films like School of Rock have played on the "different styles" for a competition concept, but it does look fresh and fun. And it's obviously meant to inspire more people to follow their dreams of dancing.

Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) Jay Martin's Maximum Ride, direct from YouTube: Based on the phenomenal, bestselling book series by James Patterson, Maximum Ride is the extraordinary journey of six...
