Adapted from Alexey Korenev's 1990 Soviet comedy film “A Trap for Lonely Man” and French playwright Robert Thomas' 1960 play “Trap for a Lonely Man” (Piege Pour un Homme Seul), “Lost in the Stars” is a truly delirious title which implements a story filled with twists in a visually impressive package. The film premiered at the Hainan International Film Festival on 25 December 2022 and released theatrically in China on 22 June 2023 to commercial success, amassing more than $485 million internationally.

CAA has signed Margaret Zhang for representation as an emerging filmmaker, writer and producer.
The new alliance marks the next step for Zhang, who officially departs her role as editor-in-chief of Vogue China at the end of May.
“I am immensely proud of the radical evolution that we have driven at Vogue China over the past three years, expanding its impact from its print beginnings to becoming a multimedia bridge for creative culture – China to the world, the world to China,” Zhang wrote in a memo announcing her exit, which was announced on Friday.
When Zhang was named Vogue China’s editor-in-chief in Feb. 2021, the then-27-year-old became the youngest Vogue chief in Condé Nast history.
During her tenure, Zhang launched the Vogue Film Initiative, which supports Chinese women in film by identifying and mentoring high-potential Chinese female filmmakers, producers, writers and actors and guiding them from development to production...

Actor, director and screenwriter Chen Sicheng is one of the giants of contemporary Chinese cinema.
His three “Detective Chinatown” films have earned more than $1.2 billion of box office revenue, and Chen is the producing force behind another major franchise, “Sheep Without a Shepherd,” adapted from the Indian “Drishyam” films.
“Lost in the Stars,” Chen’s latest effort, this time as producer and screenwriter, is another megahit. Co-directed by Cui Rui and Liu Xiang, “Lost in the Stars” has grossed $430 million (RMB3.08 billion) in China – enough to make it the seventh-biggest film worldwide this year and the 14th biggest film of all time in China – all in the span of just 17 days.

Disney releases “Elemental” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” were locked in a near dead heat at the U.K. and Ireland box office, with the animated elements edging out the veteran archaeologist.
“Elemental” debuted with £3.049 million ($3.876 million), according to numbers from Comscore. In its second weekend, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” whipped up £3.046 million ($3.873 million) for a close second and now has a total of £13.1 million.
If looking at weekend numbers alone, Harrison Ford’s last adventure as the man in the hat won the race as the “Elemental” numbers include “limited secret sneak previews from across the market,” according to Disney.
Sony’s “Insidious: The Red Door” scared up £2.2 million in a third place debut. In its sixth weekend, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” swung to £964,566 in fourth position for a total of £27.7 million.

China’s first blockbuster of the summer of 2023, Lost in the Stars, is readying for release in North America, Australia and New Zealand later this week.
The film will launch on July 7 in approximately 60 locations across 30 cities in the U.S. and Canada, courtesy of China’s international distributor Cmc Pictures. The release in Australia and New Zealand, on July 6 and July 13, respectively, will be of a similar scale.
Lost in the Stars launched in China on June 22 and already has earned about $360 million there — more than what recent Hollywood hits like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($343.4 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($355 million) grossed at home in North America.
Chinese commercial blockbusters tend to play more like specialty releases in the West, however, primarily appealing to the Chinese diaspora market, while racking up earnings more in line with what breakthrough Asian arthouse titles earn. Well Go USA released...

‘Lost In The Stars’ proved the top grossing film in June.
China’s box office jumped 52.9% in the first six months of 2023 with ticket sales of $3.7bn (RMB26.3bn), marking the first such year-on-year increase since the Covid-19 pandemic.
It does not mark a complete recovery as the figures remain 15.7% down on the same period in pre-pandemic 2019. But robust growth was seen in June with takings of $581.8m (Rmb 4.13bn), up 115% on 2022 and down a mere 0.8% on 2019. The results almost equalled pre-pandemic levels for the first time, according to data provided by Artisan Gateway.

Chinese mystery drama “Lost in the Stars” expanded in its second week on release and gave China its third biggest box office weekend of the year. That local success came as Hollywood tentpole “Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny” failed to land a top five place in the Middle Kingdom on its debut weekend.
“Indiana Jones” earned just $2.4 million in China, according to estimates from local data providers. It played some 25,000 screenings per day on Friday but earned less than $900,000. Exhibitors then slashed the number of sessions by half on Saturday. They further trimmed the number of playdates on Sunday when it slipped to seventh place. Consultancy, Artisan Gateway did not provide confirmed data for “Indiana Jones” in China.
“Lost in the Stars” earned $117 million, according to Artisan Gateway. That was significantly up from its opening weekend of $70.7 million (RMB502 million) a week earlier and enough to make it the...

Chinese mystery drama “Lost in the Stars” was the top-grossing film on the planet over the latest weekend – despite playing only a single territory.
The film earned $70.7 million (RMB502 million) between Friday and Sunday in mainland China, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. That put it far and away ahead of other Chinese new releases and Hollywood’s holdovers “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and “The Flash.”
With the Dragon Boat Festival holiday occurring on Thursday, the film was given an unusual one-day advance on the normal releasing pattern in China. Including Thursday takings, the film made a total of $98.3 million (RMB968 million).
Data from Comscore shows “Lost in the Stars” handily beating second-placed “Elemental,” which earned $49.8 million between Friday and Sunday ($31.3 million in 40 international markets and $18.5 million in North America).

On paper, linking the world’s two top box-office territories — North America and China — via a co-production designed to play in both seems a no-brainer.
But despite many attempts, big and small, and seemingly endless industry panel discussions dedicated to the topic, there are virtually no U.S.-China co-productions that have succeeded financially in both territories.
The landscape is littered with examples of promising projects that faltered or failed. Remember The Flowers of War? Zhang Yimou’s World War II period epic starring Christian Bale and Chinese star Ni Ni was a hit at home, grossing $95 million in China but...

I've got a fun trailer for an upcoming action-adventure film called The Warriors Gate for you to check out. The film centers on a teenage gamer from California, played by Uriah Shelton, who is magically transported to China where he must learn to convert his video game skills into those of a Kung Fu warrior. There, he embarks on a journey to save a princess.
What I like about what I'm seeing in this trailer is that it reminds me of those fun yet silly adventure films that I used to watch when I was growing up in the late '80s and early '90s. When you watch the trailer you'll see what I'm talking about. It's also kind of a different spin on the classic film The Last Starfighter.
The movie was co-written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark who have worked on the Taken and Transporter franchises.

"I need you to guard the most precious treasure of the Empire." Don't miss out on this one, movie lovers. EuropaCorp has unveiled a trailer for a crazy new action film titled Warrior's Gate, which is the latest feature co-written by Luc Besson & Robert Mark Kamen (of the Taken and Transporter series). Warrior's Gate is about a teenager gamer living in California who is transported to China and learns to fight as a kung fu warrior, in order to save the princess (of course). It's basically a twist on The Last Starfighter. This is a a co-production between France and China, which is an odd pairing, but it works. The cast includes Uriah Shelton as Jack, Mark Chao, Dave Bautista, Ni Ni, Francis Ng, and Sienna Guillory. This actually looks kind of cool, but also looks like it's straight out of the back of a video rental store in the 90s.

In an attempt to employ 80s fantasy film traits for a modern teen audience, Cockneys Vs Zombies director Matthias Hoene’s follow-up scuffles like an embarrassing dad at a birthday party yet throws some slick twists into the mix. From Producer Luc Besson and co-writer Robert Mark Kamen (The Karate Kid (84), The Warrior’s Gate should be an adventure film for all ages but feels like watching an over-jaunty kid’s TV show with an apocalyptic hangover. Ted (15)
(Seth MacFarlane, 2012, Us) Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joe McHale, Giovanni Ribisi. 106 mins
Those unconvinced by MacFarlane's Family Guy cartoon series will be even less convinced by his first feature – basically a routine manchild/bromance story with one novel idea: Wahlberg has a magic talking teddy, which has grown up into an obnoxious party animal – thus creating relationship issues with shrewish girlfriend Kunis. It's all gags and no comedy. And if you're anything other than white, male and pop culture-literate, you'll find the humour at best patchy, at worst, downright nasty.
Sound Of My Voice (15)
(Zal Batmanglij, 2011, Us) Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, Brit Marling. 85 mins
As with Another Earth, co-writer Marling takes an unorthodox line through a familiar genre here. This time she's a spacey/scary cult leader who claims to be from the year 2054. A couple of investigative journalists get out of their depth taking her on.

The upside to upcoming Chinese production The Last Tycoon? The 1920's gangster picture features an all star cast of Chow Yun Fat, Huang Xiaoming, Francis Ng, Sammo Hung and Ni Ni. Andy Lau being on board as a producer doesn't hurt, either. The down side? Writer-director Wong Jing, best known for cranking out fairly low grade pulp. The film, written and directed by Wong and produced by Andrew Lau, recreates the true misadventures of Shanghai mobster Du Yuesheng (Chow), who had close ties with Kmt leader Chiang Kai Shek. Now, Wong has been known to go high brow and turn out some quality work from time to time and hopefully this will be one of those cases. On December 13th, 1937, amidst the heavy fog, a handful of frantic civilians and foreigners try to escape the Nanking invasion by the Japanese. Hired to bury a Catholic priest, John, a greedy American mortician (Christian Bale) crossing the battlefield, teams up with a young pair of locals to help him get to his destination. Luckily for him, the girls are part of a group of students residing at Winchester Cathedral, the convent for young girls that he was trying to find.
With the city under fire, the convent soon becomes holy ground for a group of discourteous and obnoxious prostitutes, led by the sultry Mo (Ni Ni), to the delight of our less than honourable American. But John’s charm has little to no effect when it comes to women like these. Feeling snubbed one night, after a few bottles of wine, he decides to give the old cleric’s clothes a go.

They look so happy. The Oscars are long over but somehow it's comforting to know that people hold new trophies every day of the year for something or other and not all of them are dreaming of Oscar. And not all awards bodies are concerned with whether or not Oscar voters are watching.
It was a big night for A Separation (which we were just talking about) which took home the top prize and three others. The craft categories were mostly split between Wu Xia and The Flying Swords of Dragon Gale, neither of which have come to Us cinemas.

China, 2011
A select few of China’s most revered filmmakers have, at given moments in their careers, chosen to make headway in the English-language cinema landscape, their sights aimed more specifically at the United States and Hollywood. John Woo’s stint was less than memorable, with Face/Off being his most successful attempt (and few would argue that it is any better than what he made in Hong Kong either before or after his American career). Wong Kar Wai, after making a name for himself with nearly 20 years of great films, headed West as well to make My Blueberry Nights with mixed results to say the least. Zhang Yimou, known mostly for his wuxia-style epics Hero and House of Flying Daggers, does not go to quite the same lengths, preferring to keep his latest film set in China,...

Zhang Yimou's war epic heralds new co-operation, but at times the stylistic gap between east and west is just too deep
Heralded as a new dawn in China-Hollywood co-operation, this ambitious war film from Zhang Yimou is an attempt to turn the revolting aftermath of the 1937 Japanese assault on Nanjing into a globally friendly, putatively inspiring epic that also aims to underscore the Us and China's geopolitical mutual respect.
Zhang has imported Christian Bale to play the lead, as an American mortician called John Miller who turns up in Nanjing as Japanese soldiers consolidate their grip on the hapless city, then the capital of Chiang Kai-shek's Chinese republic. He's there to look after the body of a dead priest, but the morally shaky Miller quickly finds himself in the priest's place – drinking his wine, wearing his clothes, and having to protect a gaggle of convent schoolgirls after marauding Japanese soldiers attempt a mass rape.

Helmed by Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern, Ju Dou, Hero, House of the Flying Daggers) from the script by Liu Heng, based on the novel by Geling Yan, The Flowers of War tells an epic story of love and sacrifice. The new clip is called "Permit," courtesy of Yahoo Movies. The film, set during Japan’s 1937 invasion of China, is told from a young girl’s point of view, not as a history lesson, but as an intimate, elemental and paradoxically universal celebration of the human spirit. Bale stars as a dissolute Westerner who seeks refuge in a Catholic church. There he meets a beautiful Chinese courtesan who helps him rescue a group of schoolgirls from a terrible fate at the hands of the Japanese.
