You don't need a crystal ball to accurately predict what this summer's biggest TV event will be.
The 2024 Olympics are sure to overshadow everything else on television when they debut on July 26.
The quadrennial competition always captures the nation's attention like few other events, which is why networks are willing to shell out major bucks for the broadcast rights.
But these days, there are very few guarantees of success in the world of television, as potential viewers have more entertainment options than ever before.

Optimum Sports, a media agency that specializes in sports properties and is part of ad giant Omnicom Group, had quietly snatched up 35% of advertising time during the game, a record setter in terms of viewership for women’s sports and the latest example of how interest in female players and the leagues in which they play is booming. Fukuoka (Japan), July 23 (Ians) Three world records, including the oldest one, fell and four out of five gold medals went to Australia in the first day’s swimming competition at the World Aquatics Championships here on Sunday.
Frenchman Leon Marchand broke Michael Phelps’ 15-year-world record in men’s 400 metres individual medley when he retained his world title in four minutes 2.50 seconds, trimming 1.34 seconds off the previous mark of 4:03.84, reports Xinhua.
Phelps’ time, the oldest long-course swimming record, was set at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games when he collected a total of eight gold medals.
“That was insane,” the 21-year-old Marchand said after the race. “That was one of the most painful things I did. The best is yet to come. The time is crazy.”
American Carson Foster finished second in 4:06.56 and Japan’s Daiya Seto took bronze in 4:09.41.
Australia became the biggest winner on the night by winning all the other four finals.

NBC is betting big on broadcast TV and its Peacock streaming service for its 2024 Paris Olympics coverage, as it embraces more live coverage of the summer games.
NBCUniversal said Thursday that it planned to stream all 2024 Olympics events live on Peacock next year, a first for the summer games (the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics only saw a handful of events streamed live). In addition, the company says that it will air at least nine hours of coverage during the daytime hours, including live coverage of the finals for key events like gymnastics, swimming, and track & field.
The company says that the 2024 Olympics will see the NBC broadcast network air more live programming than in any prior Olympics. Telemundo will, as usual, have exclusive Spanish-language rights.

The Tokyo Olympics came one year late, but at least they happened. And they just so happened to be watched by 42% fewer viewers than the Rio Games in 2016, according to total audience delivery (Tad) tallies. The all-in number of 15.5 million average viewers across the Tokyo Games includes NBC, its cable channels and digital properties — including Peacock. The numbers come from a combination of Nielsen and Adobe data, and combined are down from the 26.7 million total viewers, per night, from Rio. We should note that the final Nielsen numbers for NBC’s primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday and the Closing Ceremony on Sunday will be in Tuesday. Earning gold, silver and bronze, respectively, were the first Sunday of competition (20 million viewers), the first Thursday (19.5 million) and the second Tuesday (17.4 million). On the No. 1 night, NBC aired the women’s gymnastics team’s — including Simons Biles — qualifying round during that Sunday primetime broadcast.

What does an Olympian do after they take home four medals? They eat a burger, of course. Swimming sensation Katie Ledecky did just that when her time in the pool was over at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, ultimately winning two gold medals and two silver medals. Yeah, it's safe to say the 24-year-old definitely earned her post-match indulgence, though it wasn't her usual go-to celebratory meal. "I only had about an hour to get ready [for interviews], so I literally just had cereal on a Pb&j," Katie recently told E! News of her first meal after her final competition at the Olympics. "That night though for dinner I was doing media somewhere else and they had a lot better food. So I did...

NBC claimed 15.2 million total audience delivery for Friday night, with Peacock notching its best-ever Friday usage. According to the network, in Tad, its primetime coverage has now reached an audience of 15 million for the seventh day in a row.

With her recent Tokyo Olympic wins, Katie Ledecky is on her way to catching Michael Phelps's medal record. On July 27, the 24-year-old became the first-ever gold medalist in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle final at the Tokyo Olympics. This is the first time that women have been able to compete in the 1,500-meter race, although it's been a men's event since the 1908 Summer Olympics. Her recent win brings her career Olympic medals to a total of 10, with six of them being for individual events. Katie now has more individual Olympic gold medals than any other woman in the history of the sport.
"Thank you, Tokyo, and thank You All for the tremendous support this week and over the years to get to this point," Katie said in a post on Instagram. Teammates Natalie Hinds and Lilly King then showed their support for Katie on their Instagram Stories, while former Olympian...

Michael Phelps may be the most decorated Olympian of all time, but even he's afraid of Katie Ledecky. In fact, during his Olympics commentary on Sunday, Phelps admitted the 24-year-old U.S. superstar swimmer would've wiped the floor with him in 2016.
Phelps, the greatest male swimmer of all time, has been serving as both a commentator and correspondent for NBC at the Tokyo Olympics, giving his insights on the biggest races in the pool. And though Ledecky ended up taking silver in the 400m freestyle on Sunday, Phelps said "she's the Goat" right now, even compared to him.
"I had the privilege to train with her at the last training camp, in 2016. I'm very happy that she didn't do the exact set with us that day because she would've destroyed me," Phelps said with a laugh. "Oh my gosh, her long course, when she trains -- oh, she's incredible."

Move aside Michael Phelps, because Caeleb Dressel has entered the pool. The 24-year old swimmer is the fastest swimmer in the world and has the potential to be the fourth swimmer in history to earn seven medals in a single Olympic Games. And now, this summer, he will be swimming alongside 52 teammates, including Katie Ledecky and Ryan Murphy, in events such as the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Not to mention, he holds multiple world records plus seven gold medals from the 2017 World Championships and eight...

NBCUniversal said Monday that it will present an unprecedented 7,000 hours of coverage of the Tokyo Olympics this summer on two broadcast networks, six cable networks and multiple digital platforms serving both English- and Spanish-language viewers.

Usain Bolt says he can remember the biggest races of his career frame-by-frame, almost in slow motion, including his world record-setting one at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. The Jamaican 8x-Olympic gold medalist and current fastest person in the world bested his then-biggest rival, Tyson Gay of the U.S., in the men’s 100-metres race, setting a new world record by completing the event in 9.58 seconds — and breaking his own previous record of 9.69 seconds at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Retired since 2017, Bolt has been busy with another role as of late: he and girlfriend Kasi Bennett became parents to daughter Olympia Lightning Bolt, born in May.
