Every year, SXSW seems to grow in size and breadth. The opportunities to glimpse the future and connect with its architects in an intersection of disciplines—music, technology, television, and cinema included—can be overwhelming. And in 2024 alone, there were more than 115 films and 80 short features at the fest.
It is impossible to see everything, yet our team of critics and journalists made a concerted effort to give it the old college try. Of the more than 40 projects we did glean between us, here were the ones that stood out most and we think should probably be on your radar. Also to note, the list is in alphabetical order.
Adrianne & the Castle
Given the sheer volume and variety of films at this festival, rarely does one do a double-take when reading loglines or hearing directors or producers soft pitch their films in passing. But that was absolutely the case...

Fatherhood apparently has a way of slowing you down. Take Batman, for instance. He’s clearly not at his fittest in this new Amazon Prime animated film, in which he looks more like a burly lumberjack than a superhero, wearing dad jeans, a flannel shirt and a heavy beard. Fortunately, he’s not the hero tasked with saving Gotham City yet again in the Yuletide-set Merry Little Batman. That would be Damian, his eight-year-old son, who clearly takes after his old man when it comes to fighting supervillains.
Damian (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) displays the typical energy of a pre-adolescent, chasing his cat around the expansive confines of Wayne Manor as if they were in a Tom and Jerry cartoon. His father Bruce (Luke Wilson) is essentially retired, having gotten rid of all crime in Gotham City. But he’s still on call, meaning that when he gets a message...

The Inventor is a stop-motion animated adventure film directed by Jim Capobianco and Pierre-Luc Granjon from a screenplay by Jim Capobianco. The British animated film follows the story of the legendary inventor Leonardo Da Vinci as he invents many wonderous things and tackles the meaning of life itself with the help of the French princess Marguerite de Navarre.
The list of voice actors in The Inventor is quite impressive as it includes Stephen Fry as Leonardo da Vinci, Daisy Ridley as Marguerite de Navarre, Jim Capobianco as Cardinal of Aragon, Matt Berry as Pope Leon X, Marion Cotillard as Louise of Savoy, and Natalie Palamides as Pierre Nepveu and Antonio de Beatis.

This comedy sees a troupe of clowns, living statues and ravers roaming about a dystopia where electricity has been stopped by a solar flare
For years, Bobcat Goldthwait’s cult classic Shakes the Clown was the only adult-oriented black comedy featuring an almost all-clown list of dramatis personae. But hooray – now there’s another one! Or nearly, because admittedly there are a few nonclown characters here. This superbly titled film is a goofy, wildly uneven but ultimately watchable low-budget Irish caprice that mostly revolves around an ad hoc troupe of outsider clowns (a phrase that may be a tautology) who are thrown together when a freak solar flare wipes out all the electricity in Ireland, or maybe the world.
Luckily, Bobo (David Earl), a washed-up clown with a squirty-flower boutonniere and little to no talent, does have a wind-up car that doesn’t need electricity. He ends up piling in...

There are quite a few movies with two things that I wouldn’t put together normally that get thrust into each other for our entertainment. Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus, Ninjas vs Zombies, Cowboys vs Vampires (yes these are all actual movies that I have seen) and now the apocalypse and clowns.
Like many movies with crazy-sounding themes, the title alone does get your attention but the story itself is actually as simple as it could be. An electrical and technological blackout has hit Ireland and now anarchy and chaos have hit the country. A group of mostly failed clowns have ended up together travelling the country and trying to survive. But, it might give them one last shot at the big time.

At this point, Bob's Burgers has been on the air for over a decade, and Fox typically keeps renewing its established animated shows year after year. However, since the network no longer owns the series, they don't profit from syndication and streaming sales as they once did. At some point, Bob's Burgers could be cancelled on Fox and moved to a Disney-owned channel or streaming service. Will the series be renewed for season 14 on Fox, or could this be the series' last year on the network? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

Over the course of its five-season run, "Schitt's Creek" grew from a quiet sitcom with a sizable following to a full-blown cultural phenomenon. It's become impossible to remember life before Annie Murphy first uttered the words "Ew, David" and hardly a day goes by that I don't see a gif of Dan Levy looking absolutely disgusted as David. While the series will no doubt hold up as a heartwarming and hilarious rewatch until the end of time, the door has (mostly) closed on the Rose family hijinks, leaving audiences to wonder: what comes next for writer, co-creator, and star Dan Levy?
The answer is, unsurprisingly, a lot. Given the massive success of "Schitt's Creek" — which includes setting the Emmy record for most wins in a single season for a comedy series — the rush to produce Levy's next project was very real. He was courted and eventually signed a TV and movie deal with Netflix.

Dan Levy and Ally Pankiw’s comedy “Standing By” has been ordered to series at Hulu.
According to the logline, the series is a “satirical look into the lives of a group of eternally bound, disgruntled guardian angels and the lessons they’ll eventually learn from not only the dysfunctional humans they’re in charge of protecting, but also each other.” Levy, David Tennant, Natalie Palamides, Glenn Close, Poppy Liu, Samira Wiley will star.
“Standing By is about the hilarity, embarrassment, and melodrama of everyday life as observed by a team of judgmental, gossip-starved Guardian Angels. We are very excited to bring this world to life with the help of Hulu, 20th Television Animation, and Bento Box Entertainment. Not to mention an insanely brilliant cast of actors,” reads a statement from Levy and Pankiw.

Jash, six months after it was acquired by Group Nine Media, is maintaining a busy slate of digital productions. The studio, founded by Sarah Silverman and three other comedy notables back in 2013, has launched Please Understand Me, a relationship comedy that is available via Facebook Watch.
Each episode of Please Understand Me centers around a real-life therapist and pairs two comedians together to form a fictional on-screen partnership. One installment, for example, gives experienced funnypeople Fred Melamed and Mo Collins space to bounce jokes off one another. In one of the early episodes, which arrived on Facebook Watch on May 30, Rory Scovel and Natalie Palamides portray a brother-and-sister duo.

Sarah Silverman has partnered with Jash, a division of Group Nine Studios, for a new comedy series on the pain and humor of relationships that will air on Facebook Watch, the social network’s nascent video platform.
Each episode of “Please Understand Me” pairs two rising comedians in a fake relationship, and forces them to sit down with a real therapist to work through their fake troubles. “Nothing is off limits,” according to Group Nine, with wacky dating stories, complex sexual histories, and plenty of uncomfortable moments.
Silverman is an executive producer and narrator of the five-part series. The show was created by Ahamed Weinberg (“Comedy Bang Bang”) and Steven Feinartz. Weinberg has also worked with Silverman on her Hulu show, “I Love You, America.”

Facebook is funding the series as part of its effort to deliver TV-style programming — and advertising — to the social service’s massive user base. Group Nine declined to disclose terms of the pact for “Please Understand Me.”
The first two episodes of “Please Understand Me” debuted May 30 on the show’s Facebook Watch page at facebook.com/PleaseUnderstandMe, with the remaining three segments to be released on following Wednesdays. The show also will be promoted by Group Nine’s Thrillist and Silverman.
In each episode, two mismatched comedians pretend to hash out the problems of their fake relationship — in front of a real therapist,...

At San Diego Comic Con, we were so lucky to interview the Powderpuff Girls cast & writers. Cartoon Network rebooted the series this year with new writes & voices and while change is hard (Ppg was one of the defining cartoons of our childhood) we really warmed up to Amanda Leighton (Blossom), Kristen Li (Bubbles) and Natalie Palamides (Buttercup). We also got to talk to some of the writers Jake Goldman & Hayley Mancini (also the voice of Princess Morebucks) and the producers Nick Jennings & Bob Boyle. We talked a lot about how the Powerpuff brand of feminism has been updated for 2016 and what it’s like to be voice actors and what kind of choices go into voicing such iconic characters. There’s so much to talk about!
