Pope Francis called out “conservative critics” for having a “suicidal attitude” in a new interview. The Pope defined a conservative as someone who “clings to something and does not want to see beyond that.”
“Because one thing is to take tradition into account, to consider situations from the past, but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box,” the Pope told 60 Minutes.
In the past, Francis has addressed criticism from United States religious figures, even removing some people from their titles. Bishop Joseph Strickland was removed from his post in Tyler, Texas after Strickland frequently criticized the Pope online. In August 2023, Francis said the U.S. Catholic Church holds “a very strong reactionary attitude.”
Francis’ interview with Norah O’Donnell also included conversations about Ukraine, Israel, Gaza and climate change. Francis also addressed sexual abuse in the Church and his commitment to inclusivity. In January, Francis faced...

We’re always sad to report about the death of an important person from the industry, but that is also part of our reality and we have to honor the work that these people put into the history of cinema. Roger Corman never became a mainstream author, but he was a pioneer of independent cinema and one of the most important filmmakers in history.
No official cause of death was revealed, but the news was confirmed by Corman’s family yesterday, who also issued the following statement: “His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. We have some sad news to share today because it's been confirmed that legendary B-movie filmmaker Roger Corman has passed away at 98.
He produced and directed hundreds of low-budget movies and was responsible for discovering the likes of Jack Nicholson (Little Shop of Horrors), Martin Scorsese (Boxcar Bertha), Francis Ford Coppola (Dementia 13), and Robert De Niro (Boxcar Bertha).
Beloved in Hollywood, Corman was praised for hiring women in key executive and creative roles at a time when that sadly wasn't the norm.
Also of note is the fact that, after producing a movie called The Fast and the Furious in 1955, he made a deal with fellow producer Neal Moritz to exchange the name rights for stock footage, meaning Corman played a small, yet unlikely role, in launching the hit racing/action series in 2001.
Also known as "The Pope of Pop Cinema", "The Spiritual Godfather of the New Hollywood", and "The King of Cult,...

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist, which made an impressive $76 million in theaters last year and shot to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts in the wake of its theatrical release. We had learned almost exactly one year ago that Screen Gems was working on a sequel, but what’s the latest on that?
In a recent chat with Virgin Media Television’s The Six O’Clock Show – brought to our attention by MovieWeb – Russell Crowe himself provided a fresh update on the future of our favorite Vespa-riding exorcist. Crowe explained to the show when asked if he would be reprising the role of Gabriele Amorth, “That’s in discussion at the moment.

Last May, after “Killers of the Flower Moon” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese traveled to Rome with his wife, Helen Morris, to attend a conference titled “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination.” There, the director announced that he had responded to an appeal by Pope Francis to artists “in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.”
The conference was organized by Jesuit publication “La Civiltà Cattolica.” It took place after the journal’s editor, Father Antonio Spadaro, held a series of one-on-one conversations with Scorsese that have just come out in Italy in a book published by La nave di Teseo titled “Dialoghi sulla fede” (“Dialogues on Faith”).
The final chapter of this book is titled, as translated from Italian, “Screenplay for a Possible Film on Jesus” by Scorsese. Spadaro, in the book’s introduction, specifies...

The results are in on the 2024 Razzie Awards, and it was a very big (but not necessarily great) night for one movie and one actress this year.
The annual awards show, which took place one day before the 2024 Oscars on Saturday (March 9), hands out awards to performers and movies that have been deemed the “worst.”
Going into the ceremony, Expend4bles led the pack of nominees with 7 nods in categories such as Worst Picture and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off of Sequel.
However, when it came time for the awards to be handed out, another movie swept the field, picking up five Razzies. One actress also won big, being named Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress.
However, one Hollywood icon received redemption this year!

Slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey swept the five categories it was nominated in for at the 44th annual Razzies, which “honor” the worst of filmmaking. The awards were announced today.
‘Winnie the Pooh’ won the Razzie in the picture, director, screenplay, screen couple and remake/rip-off/sequel categories. The film, based on the beloved children’s literary character, follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and bloodthirsty murderers. They terrorize a group of young university women and the returning Christopher Robin.
The Razzie Redeemer Award, bestowed on a past contender who has “gone on to better things” since being nominated for a Razzie, went to “The Nanny” actor and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher for her leadership during the 2023 actor strike.
Drescher was nominated in 1998 for worst actress in the romantic comedy film The Beautician and the Beast.

Italy’s Best International Feature Oscar-nominated Io Capitano starts its U.S. run today in ten market on 21 screens, a bit wider than usual for Cohen Media Group but with Academy final voting just started, reviews are gold for the odyssey that director Matteo Garrone calls “a movie about human rights. About the rights of everybody to move, to look for a better life.”
That’s the quest of teenage cousins Seydou (Seydou Sarr) and Moussa (Moustapha Fall), who live in a close-knit village in Senegal. They’re not starving, not in danger. They are poor, restless, want a shot at something better in Europe and are oblivious to the horrors along the way.

Martin Scorsese recently spoke at the Berlin Film Festival, where he discussed his upcoming movie chronicling the life of Jesus Christ.
The Jesus Christ movie could be Martin Scorsese’s next project, but the director is still in the process of figuring it out. “I’m contemplating it right now,” Scorsese said. “What kind of film I’m not quite sure, but I want to make something unique and different that could be thought-provoking and I hope also entertaining. I’m not quite sure yet how to go about it.“
Once the awards tour for Killers of the Flower Moon is behind him, Scorsese hopes to resume work on the project. “Maybe I’ll get some sleep and then wake up and I’ll have this fresh idea of how to do it,” he said. While it seems like there’s still a lot to do before the project moves forward,...

Martin Scorsese revealed he is still mulling how to tackle the life of Jesus on the big screen, at a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival where he will receive its honorary Golden Bear on Tuesday evening.

Hillary Clinton and Sharon Stone shared the stage at the annual Cinema for Peace funder raiser in Berlin on Monday night with the latter presenting the former U.S. secretary of state with the Ngo’s Cinema for Peace Award.
Stone described Clinton as an inspirational figure in her life: “The things you’ve said have changed my life, changed the direction and changed the course of the things I’ve chosen to do.”
Clinton gently ribbed Stone about her gala gown, a tie at the front robe covered in mauve spots.
“To my friend Sharon Stone who can look amazingly beautiful in anything. When she walked in, I was like, ‘Wow, who besides Sharon Stone could wear a gigantic bath robe and look stunning… you are one of a kind my friend, one of kind,” she said.

Jaka Bizilj, the founder of the Berlin-based Cinema for Peace Foundation which organized the airlift from Russia of opposition activist Alexei Navalny after his poisoning in 2020, has responded to his sudden death in an Arctic Circle jail on Friday.
“Seeing the kind of treatment that they were giving him, I’ve been afraid for months that they were going to kill him,” Bizilj told Deadline.
He suggested the writing had been on wall for Navalny ever since the death of Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash in August in the wake of his aborted coup over the summer.
“The Prigozhin case, the uprising, showed that Russia is not as stable as we all believed. After the killing of Prigozhin, Navalny was next on the list… I don’t think Putin saw him as an immediate threat but he was afraid of him in the long run,...

The Oscar nominees luncheon is always full of good vibes, a definite highlight of the season especially since those in the room have all made it this far — all Oscar nominated and getting to mingle not just with other nominees but also the large number of Academy voters on hand. Considering we are less than two weeks away from final voting beginning, it is also a chance for some to push AMPAS members to check out their films.
“Hopefully if you have seen my movie you will want to vote for it,” said one prominent executive to an Academy member Monday. “And if you aren’t going to see it, vote for it anyway,” they added.
And why not?

Update, with video: Whoopi Goldberg has made no secret in recent years of people she’d like to cast in her long-in-the-works Sister Act 3 project, from original Sister costars Jenifer Lewis and Kathy Najimy to Jimmy Fallon, Charlamagne Tha God, Lizzo, Keke Palmer, and Nicki Minaj, and today she added another old friend to the list: Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Ralph, who appeared in 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, seemed delighted if perhaps too overwhelmed with emotion to give an official answer when, during an appearance on today’s The View, Goldberg invited the Abbott Elementary star to take part in both a planned View reunion of Sister Act vets and the hoped-for second sequel to the original 1992 comedy.
“You know, we’re in the process of putting together 3,” Goldberg said toward the end of Ralph’s visit. “Will you come be part of it, whatever it is?...

Martin Scorsese met with Pope Francis in Rome on Wednesday and gifted him with a photo book for his Oscar-nominated movie Killers of the Flower Moon, ahead of attending the pontiff’s weekly general audience.
“The dialogue between Martin Scorsese and Pope Francis continues… two men of genius and experience for whom the figure of Jesus Christ holds an extraordinary fascination and value,” Antonio Spadaro, Undersecretary of the Vatican Dicastery for Culture and Education, wrote of the meeting in a post on X.
Footage of the meeting shows Pope Francis flicking through the lavish photo book as Scorsese is seen talking animatedly on the other side of a large desk.
Scorsese was then seen joining hundreds of other people at the general audience in the Vatican City with his daughter, at which the Pope gave a lesson on the destructive nature of uncontrolled anger.

It’s altogether likely that many non-Indigenous people knew nothing about the abuse and disappearances of Native American children that occurred over decades in residential Indian schools throughout North America until those outages inspired a wrenchingly potent subplot last year for the Taylor Sheridan-produced TV series “1923.” But the truth behind that fact-based fiction is even more shocking, and infuriating, as detailed in “Sugarcane,” the remarkable film that received a well-deserved jury prize for documentary direction at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Co-directors Emily Kassie and Indigenous filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat show restraint and empathy while cataloguing the horrors that were endemic at the now-shuttered St. Joseph’s Mission residential school near the Sugarcane Reservation of Williams Lake in British Columbia. Pope Francis urged Catholics across the globe to avoid pornography, stating that, “satisfaction without relationship” has the potential to destroy relationships and lead to different forms of addiction.
On Wednesday, in St. Peters Square, he gave a speech on the “vice of lust,” arguing that pornography undermines sexual pleasure and could pose problems for relationships and love within the context of marriage.
“We have to defend love, the love of the heart, of the mind, of the body, pure love in the giving of oneself to the other.” He then added, “And this is the beauty of sexual intercourse. Winning the battle against lust, against the ‘objectification’ of the other, can be a lifelong endeavor.”
He went on to describe that abstaining from pornography and lust will preserve the beauty that God intended. The Pope then went on to say that sexuality is important and can have negative consequences if...

Pope Francis ignited a controversy after allowing priests to bless same-sex couples. Since the announcement of this decision on December 18, the Pope has received both criticism and praise.
Catholic bishops in Africa have refused to implement this change. On the other hand, members of the LGBTQ community acknowledged the Pope’s decision as a step towards inclusivity in the Church.
In response to the criticism, Pope Francis expanded on his decision in a television interview with Italy’s Channel 9.
“Sometimes decisions are not accepted, but in most cases when decisions are not accepted, it is because they are not understood,” he said.
“The blessing of same-sex couples does not recognize a marriage but rather encourages those to strengthen their relationship with God,” the Pope stated. “This allows same-sex couples to be blessed without going against the traditional teachings of marriage being a union between man and woman. The Lord blesses everyone.

Acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese confirmed last year that he had a project in the pipeline about Jesus Christ after meeting Pope Francis and has now revealed that the screenplay is complete and production is scheduled.
“I’m trying to find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organised religion,” Scorsese told the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
The director has revealed that the picture will only be 80 minutes long – a far cry from the lengthy runtimes of his recent movies and is to focus on the principles of Jesus Christ’s core teachings, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Scorsese said: “Right now, ‘religion’, you say that word and everyone is up in arms because it’s failed in some ways. But that doesn’t mean necessarily that the initial impulse was wrong. Let’s get back. Let’s just think about it.

While enjoying a deluge of praise for his latest awards contender, Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese is already teasing his next project. Last summer, after attending the Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination conference in Italy, Scorsese said he met with Pope Francis and intended to make a film about Jesus Christ. Orders from the Pope make a Catholic work quick: right after Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Cannes premiere Martin Scorsese visited Pope Francis and, in his own words, “responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.” In just eight months’ time it’s come to light, via an LA Times profile, that Scorsese penned a script with frequent collaborator Kent Jones, of many documentaries and forthcoming Marilynne Robinson adaptations, taking as source Shūsaku Endō’s A Life of Jesus, wherein the Silence author’s stated intent was “to make Jesus understandable in terms of the religious psychology of my non-Christian countrymen and thus to demonstrate that Jesus is not alien to their religious sensibilities.” Shooting is expected to commence this year.

Pope Francis has given formal approval for priests to bless same-sex couples, a significant shift in Vatican policy.
The new document, released by the Vatican’s doctrine office on Monday, expands on a letter previously sent by Pope Francis to two conservative cardinals in October. The document clarifies that blessings for same-sex couples can be offered under certain circumstances, as long as they do not confuse the ritual with the sacrament of marriage.
While it emphasizes that marriage remains a lifelong sacrament between a man and a woman, the document stresses that the blessings in question should be non-liturgical and distinct from civil unions. It advises against the use of specific wedding rituals, clothing or gestures.
However, the document asserts that requests for blessings from same-sex couples should not be categorically denied. It presents a broad interpretation of the term “blessing” in Scripture and argues that individuals who seek a...

A speech written by Pope Francis was delivered by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, at the COP28, the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
In this speech, the pope called for an end to fossil fuels.
The leader of the Catholic Church was unable to attend the Dubai summit and deliver the speech himself. He is continuing to recover from the flu and inflammation in his lungs.
“The destruction of the environment is an offense against God, a sin . . . that greatly endangers all human beings, especially the most vulnerable in our midst and threatens to unleash a conflict between generations,” the pope said. “Are we working for a culture of life or a culture of death? To all of you I make this heartfelt appeal: Let us choose life!”

The pope demanded that the planet should be kept safe by developing energy-efficient and renewable resources.

Director James Gunn has been named PETA’s 2023 Person of the Year. Per the animal rights organization, Gunn has been selected “for using impressive and stunningly well-crafted CGI animals to inspire tens of millions of moviegoers—who flocked to theaters to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’—to have compassion for the millions of animals killed by experimenters in laboratories.”
The third installment of “Guardians of the Galaxy” explains Rocket Raccoon’s origin story as a test subject in a lab, alongside other animals.
“By telling the story of the millions of vulnerable animals abused in experiments, James Gunn has shown himself to be a true animal guardian,” says PETA president Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is delighted to honor him for encouraging exactly what the world needs: empathy for all living beings.”
Gunn also adopted his dog, Ozu, in May 2022 and promoted #AdoptDontShop on each post related to his dog’s journey.

Taylor Swift, Barbie and Hollywood strikers are among the nine contenders for Time’s 2023 Person of the Year, the magazine announced today.
Also up for the designation, in addition to various world figures, is Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
The annual selection chooses the individual, group, or concept that has had the most influence on the world throughout the previous 12 months. The 2023 Person of the Year will be announced on Wednesday.
The nine candidates were announced on NBC’s Today show this morning. See the full list below.
In considering the striking Hollywood writers and actors, Time said the workers displayed “a rare show of the power of both labor and the entertainment industry.”
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, Time said, “made clear the possibility for theatrical success remains even in a streaming world,” while Swift was noted for the re-release of her albums and “the highest-grossing global tour of all time.

It’s hard to keep track of all the ethical violations depicted in Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife, the new three-part Netflix docuseries whose title suggests a straight-to-cable Nineties TV movie. Some of the sins here on display are, literally, mortal: Paolo Macchiarini, an apparent sociopath, a definite conman, and, worst of all, a surgeon, left a trail of corpses in the wake of his fraudulent stem cell procedures, in which he inserted plastic tracheas into people before even testing them on animals. Others are more venal, if extremely aggravating to journalists.
