The new “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” has run fast through the events of its “Fire & Blood” source material, with the first season covering a span of 20 years in eight episodes. In a Monday post on his blog “Random Musings,” original series author George R.R. Martin revealed that he hopes the series will continue on this pace to cover the entire Targaryen civil war (or the Dance of Dragons) over four seasons.
“There are only so many minutes in an episode (more on HBO than on the network shows I once wrote for), and only so many episodes in a season … If ‘House of the Dragon’ had 13 episodes per season, maybe we could have shown all the things we had to ‘time jump’ over… though that would have risked having some viewers complain that the show was too ‘slow,’ that ‘nothing happened.’ As it is, I am...

Photo: ‘The Deer King’ Background and Summary There’s no doubt ‘The Deer King’ is an adapted novel. It wanders into every possible corner of its highly-developed world like Tolkien prose. Every ridge, every tree, every flower; the animal skin huts of the pastoral tribes to the cobblestone streets of the capital city. They’re each part of a tapestry that unfolds slowly but sumptuously. Every still is like a page of a Patrick Rothfuss novel, endowed with a natural musicality and beauty. The film is adapted from a series of Japanese fantasy novels by Nahoko Uehashi running from 2014 to 2017. Sound like a tall task for a two-hour movie to cover? It is - Deer King’s most glaring problem is the breadth of its world, at least for a single film. It renders the first fifteen minutes of the film crucial to understand yet impossibly dense with detail, as...

The series adaptation of “The Kingkiller Chronicle” is not moving forward at Showtime as planned.
Variety has confirmed with sources that Showtime will no longer develop the series, which has been in the works at the premium cabler since October 2017, for financial reasons. Lionsgate Television, which is producing the show, will now shop the series to other outlets. Lionsgate announced in 2015 that it was developing a movie, TV show, and video game based on the fantasy book series. The TV series is an origin story set a generation before the events of the first novel.
Lionsgate and Showtime declined to comment.
The series is centered on the wizard Kvothe, who survives a tragic childhood to become a notorious household name. “The Kingkiller Chronicle” book trilogy by Patrick Rothfuss and novellas have sold 10 million copies, and the first two books — “The Name of the Wind” and “The Wise Man’s Fear” — were New York Times bestsellers.

There’s no denying this one: Lionsgate’s film division had a dismal year at the box office, topping out at $388 million — the company’s worst domestic box office performance since 2011.
The brightest spots on Lionsgate’s slate were two modestly budgeted films with female leads: Paul Feig’s thriller “A Simple Favor,” which earned $53.5 million domestically, and Anna Faris’s remake of “Overboard,” released under the Pantelion Films banner to just $50.3 million.
The Sundance acquisition “Blindspotting” garnered some major critical acclaim, but little else. And the company took big losses on the Mila Kunis-Kate McKinnon comedy “The Spy Who Dumped Me” and the sci-fi film “Kin.”
Lionsgate also missed the bullseye with one of its priciest bets: the $100 million-budgeted “Robin Hood,” which has managed just over $30 million so far at the domestic box office. The fantasy adventure starring Taron Egerton has also underperformed overseas, though it still awaits a release in China.

The ongoing restructuring at Lionsgate continued Tuesday as the studio announced that Damon Wolf would be the new head of worldwide marketing for its motion picture division starting next year. He replaces Tim Palen, who will stay on as the studio’s chief brand officer and will work with Wolf on the transition.
Wolf comes to Lionsgate after four years at Sony, where he was co-head of marketing for TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Acquisitions. Among the films he built marketing campaigns for are the Edgar Wright action film “Baby Driver,” Ridley Scott’s Oscar-nominated “All The Money In The World,” and Danny Boyle’s “T2: Trainspotting.”
Wolf’s hire comes five weeks after Good Universe co-founder Nathan Kahane was named the new president of Lionsgate, joining longtime collaborator and new studio chairman Joe Drake as the replacement for longtime studio chiefs Erik Feig and Patrick Wachsberger.

Following the huge success of his Broadway musical Hamilton, as well as the more recent success of the Disney film Moana, for which he wrote music, Lin-Manuel Miranda seems to have his finger on the pulse of the industry. He’s the hot new commodity who can pretty much do whatever he wants at this point. With his involvement in such films as Mary Poppins Returns and an unspecified animated project with Zootopia co-director Byron Howard, it’s very clear that he’s exercising his new place in the industry.
Well, it sounds like he’s extending his reach even further into the fantasy realm. According to a report from Variety, Miranda has now signed on as creative producer on the film and TV adaptations of author Patrick Rothfuss’ fantasy book series Kingkiller Chronicle. Also tapped as creative producer is Rothfuss himself.
Creative producer definitely seems like quite the strange title.

After engineering a Broadway slam-dunk in hit musical Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda has become one of the most sought-after talents in all of Hollywood, and has already inked a number of high-profile deals with Disney including a key role in 2018 sequel, Mary Poppins Returns.
The Hollywood Reporter now brings word of another, with this one in particular involving Lionsgate’s long-gestating adaptation of The Kingkiller Chronicle. Miranda, a close friend of the original author Patrick Rothfuss, has come attached as a creative producer, and will oversee development for Lionsgate, which may well include a companion TV series. But Miranda’s forte lies in music, and sure enough THR has confirmed that the esteemed composer will write original songs for The Kingkiller Chronicle, similar to his contribution on Disney’s critically-acclaimed Moana.

Music plays an important role in Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicles, with entire passages and plotlines of the fantasy series hinging on half-remembered folk songs or the ability to play guitar after a string snaps. With the series in the process of getting not just the big-screen adaptation, but also a TV show and video game, it’s a good omen that Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has signed on to compose the score and pen original songs. The press release also casually drops that he has the option to be involved with any future stage adaption. Will the addition of a stage show to the already-planned film franchise, TV show, and video game make The Kingkiller Chronicle the largest books-to-everything adaptation we’ve ever seen? Yes.

It's safe to say that Patrick Rothfuss qualified as a cult writer ahead of Tuesday's announcement that he's the author behind Lin-Manuel Miranda's next big project — but the news that The Kingkiller Chronicle has brought the Hamilton creator on board as creative director will have plenty of people asking the obvious question: Just what is The Kingkiller Chronicle, anyway?

Tyler Perry is set to continue his reign as Madea, the Ernest P. Worrell of African American-focused, faith-adjacent entertainment. Hot off strong box-office returns for Boo! A Madea Halloween, Lionsgate has greenlit two more Perry films, including one centered on his trash-talking granny character, who’s now blowing through holidays at a frightening speed.
Boo! has made $56.4 million at the box office, more than doubling its slim $20 million budget. Given that Lionsgate is currently scrabbling for franchises in a post-Hunger Games world, it’s not surprising that the studio would extend the Perry brand. CEO John Feltheimer made the announcement while talking to analysts about the company’s earnings today, adding that the studio’s also hoping to bulk itself up with a new My Little Pony film, as well as its ongoing plans to adapt Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle.
