Last year was a standout year for animation, and 2024 is already shaping up to be another banger. While a majority of the high-profile animation releases are due out later this summer, the first quarter of 2024 has already been promising. We at /Film are constantly singing the praises of animation as a medium, and doing our best to course-correct the ignorant idea that animation is only for children. Admittedly, this list is going to look mighty small for the time being, but it will be updated throughout the year as more films become available. As we noted last year, animation is one of the only mediums where global cinema is given an equal footing to studio-produced films in America, with the artistic visuals serving as a universal language that we can all enjoy. Director: Jeff Wamester

Review of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One: A Disappointing Start to Crisis (Photo Credit – IMDb)
What’s Good: The voice cast, including Matt Bomer, Ashleigh Lathrop, and Christopher North, delivers performances on par with previous entries in the franchise. Bomer’s earnest portrayal of The Flash echoes the character’s Silver Age origins, while Lathrop and North contribute essential enthusiasm and finesse to their respective roles. Despite the film’s shortcomings, the voice actors bring their characters to life with notable performances.
What’s Bad: The film’s emotional core, the love tale between Barry Allen and Iris West, needs more depth, leaving the audience detached. The film struggles with internal contradictions, attempting to...

Six months after debuting its final season, Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” has just revealed to Gold Derby the names of the 12 cast members who are eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Two-time SAG Award winner Michael Douglas is joined by former nominees including Paul Reiser and Sarah Baker, plus new addition Kathleen Turner. See the alphabetical list below.
“The Kominsky Method” has a strong track record at the SAG Awards. Its first two seasons both earned three nominations for ensemble, Douglas and Alan Arkin. Arkin departed the series before the final installment, so he will not be eligible. Gold Derby anticipates the series is competitive to hold onto its other two nominations, though, with both the ensemble and Douglas in sixth place in our current combined odds.

Warning: contains major spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale seasons 1-3.
After the misery of season two, which slouched from one cruelty to the next, The Handmaid’s Tale season three owed viewers some victory. Broadly, that’s what it delivered. We saw Fred and Serena’s marriage implode, June make new alliances in the Lawrence house, and cracks begin to appear in Gilead.
First, the regime lost baby Nichole and Emily over the Canadian border, and then it lost the Waterfords – now both under arrest and facing trial for their actions. Finally, Gilead suffered the loss of its most precious asset: children. June and her collaborators risked their lives to rescue 86 children and infants, carrying out a plan to successfully spirit them away on a plane to Canada.
With season four approaching, here’s a recap of what changed in season three, and where everybody was left…

Turns out “Utopia” wasn’t a perfect fit at Amazon.
The streamer has canceled the sci-fi drama after only a single season, Variety has confirmed. News of the axe coming down on “Utopia” comes just over two months after it launched.
Inspired by the British series of the same name, “Utopia” hailed from “Gone Girl” and “Sharp Objects” writer Gillian Flynn, who served as showrunner and executive producer.
The eight-episode conspiracy thriller centered on a group of comic fans who met online and bonded over their obsession for a seemingly fictional comic. Together, Becky (Ashleigh Lathrop), Ian (Dan Byrd), Samantha (Jessica Rothe), Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges) and Grant (Javon “Wanna” Walton) unearthed hidden meanings cloaked within the pages of the comic, predicting threats to humanity. They realized these are not just the makings of a conspiracy; they are very real dangers coming alive right now in their world.

Amazon Prime Video dropped a deleted scene from Episode 7 of “Utopia” during the Gillian Flynn-created thriller’s virtual panel at New York Comic Con on Thursday. In the previously-unseen clip, Becky (Ashleigh Lathrop) goes to meet with a man who didn’t appear in Season 1. It turns out this is the collector who sent the winning bidder to the fan convention to get “Utopia” for him.
Now, this guy still wants the comic book he paid for and he wants it now, and he’s willing to trade Becky medication to treat her Diels in return for betraying Jessica Hyde (Sasha Banks), Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges), Ian (Dan Byrd), Alice (Farrah Mackenzie), Grant (Javon Walton) and really the entire world.

Despite the fact Jessica Rothe was heavily promoted as one of the leading ladies of Gillian Flynn’s “Utopia,” her character, Samantha, was shot and killed by Jessica Hyde (Sasha Lane) at the end of Episode 2, leaving behind Becky (Ashleigh Lathrop), Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges) and Ian (Dan Byrd) to follow the crazed woman who just murdered their friend.
So why did Flynn kill off Sam, the girl who knows the most about the “Utopia” comic book conspiracy, the leader of the pack, and an all-around good person who was just trying to help?
Well, for starters, Sam was born just to die.
“I will say that Sam is a character that I created, she wasn’t in the original [British series ‘Utopia,’ which was created by Dennis Kelly] and she was created largely to die, despite the actress, Jessica Rothe, being so,...

Gillian Flynn’s “Utopia” launched Friday, introducing us to Dr. Michael Stearns (Rainn Wilson) and Dr. Kevin Christie (John Cusack), two men who could not have more different approaches to living their lives in this crowded world, as Christie believes “how much evil do you have to do to do good?” is a valid question to ask and Stearns’ answer is a hard “none evil.”
By the end of the first season of the Amazon Prime Video thriller series, we learn that Christie, a.k.a. Mr. Rabbit, has been pulling the strings of Stearns’ life for years, using him and the flu he discovered (the Stearns Flu) as an excuse to create a “vaccine” that is embedded with a “world-changing” omnivirus that will sterilize all of the humans who are given it. This is Christie’s “cure” for overpopulation.

A strange virus is causing fatalities throughout Middle America. A group of folks who’ve been chatting online for some time think there’s some bigger, deep-state conspiracy behind it all; they’ve found a series of documents that they believe possess clues as to the nefarious forces behind not just this pandemic, but a host of other so-called “natural disasters” and catastrophes. Meanwhile, protesters are storming the streets and demanding answers, while a rich, morally suspect authority figure — and his equally dubious adult son — promise a miracle vaccine any minute now.

For the first season of her Amazon Prime Video adaptation of Dennis Kelly’s original U.K. drama “Utopia,” Gillian Flynn wanted to end on “one of those old-fashioned cliffhangers” in which the audience would be wondering, “How can our hero possibly get out of this?” she tells Variety.
And she succeeded whether you think the hero of the story is Jessica Hyde (Sasha Lane), a young woman who was raised in a secretive facility, treated as a lab rat, and became the central character in a comic book also called “Utopia”; one of the nerds (as Flynn affectionally calls them), a rag-tag group of fans of the comic who first met online and then got pulled into the very real conspiracy hidden with the book’s pages; or even Dr. Kevin Christie (John Cusack) himself,...

In the absence of trustworthy institutions and the constant simmering resentment pulsing through politics and culture alike, the concept of some vast conspiracy tying all the disparate threads together must be, in its own twisted way, a comfort. When life feels particularly scattered, and faith in brighter days has dimmed, the idea that there are definitive answers out there just waiting to be discovered — no matter how wild they are — is all too tempting as an escape hatch from reality. But in Gillian Flynn’s “Utopia,” the conspiracy theorists are the ones living in reality. Everyone else just trying to go about their lives is just biding their time before the cataclysmic end.

Gillian Flynn’s new show Utopia has been in the works since roughly the time her 6-year-old daughter was conceived. The girl is affectionately known as “Kick” — after what she used to do in the womb while the author was working away on the TV series.
“She could go feral very quickly, and I say that with all affection,” the bestselling thriller writer-turned-showrunner tells Rolling Stone. “There’s an instinct to tame [children], I think, and I try to resist that. Girls especially need that particular skill set of fierceness — the willingness to push back.

Utopia subverts what we know about geek culture and uses it against its characters in a dangerous game that changes the world. The suspense drama shepherded by Gillian Flynn, the author best known for Gone Girl and Sharp Objects, will arrive on Amazon Prime on Sept. 25 to wage a bloody path through the viewers psyches.
Based on a 2013 British black comedy of the same name, the American version of Utopia tells the story of a group of nerds who believe that the comic, also named Utopia, is based in fact. Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges) is more paranoid than most when it comes to the comic and plays well against Samantha’s (Jessica Rothe) utter conviction in the comic they’re obsessed over. Amazon Prime Video’s American remake of brief-but-beloved British television series Utopia is readying a premiere on the platform this fall—specifically September 25, as the newest trailer for the show has finally announced.
The long-gestated series (originally planned back in 2015 for HBO by David Fincher), involves a group of fans whose obsession with a prophetic graphic novel about biological warfare thrusts them in the middle of a real-life conspiracy involving a pandemic. Now, by some cosmic coincidence, Utopia is set to arrive during a time in which such a plot proved shockingly prescient. Compounding the weirdness, the series showcases a comedically-leaning adventure.
With that in mind, do check out the new trailer for Amazon’s Utopia just below.
Indeed, the trailer in question expands upon the show’s parallels to our own global health crisis, revealing how a disease, called Stern’s Flu, rapidly escalates to pandemic status. Yet, as...

A comic book story contains a web of real-life conspiracies in the new trailer for Utopia, set to premiere September 25th on Amazon Prime Video.
Created by acclaimed writer Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects), the series centers around a comic book called Utopia and a select group of fans who believe there are hidden messages contained in the pages that predict actual events. In a chilling — although certainly unintended — parallel to this real-life moment, the superfans find themselves confronting a deadly pandemic that the Utopia comic says will lead to humanity’s downfall.

‘Utopia’ Trailer Finds John Cusack, Rainn Wilson on Different Sides of a Pandemic Conspiracy (Video)
It’s the end of the world as we know it in Amazon’s newly released “Utopia” trailer — but it doesn’t look like anyone feels fine about the situation.
In the trailer, you’ll meet John Cusack’s Dr. Kevin Christie and Rainn Wilson’s Dr. Michael Stearns, two great minds on two very different sides of a pandemic conspiracy. While Dr. Stearns appears to be doing all he can to contain the threat to humanity, Dr. Christie seems to have a sinister plan up his sleeve.
Amazon Prime Video dropped the clip, which you can view above, Tuesday, when it was also revealed the eight-part conspiracy thriller series from “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn will premiere Sept. 25.
