Paramount Names Australia/New Zealand Chief
Paramount Global has named Beverley McGarvey President of Network 10, Head of Streaming and Regional Lead for Australia and New Zealand, effective immediately. This comes after the exit of the UK-based Maria Kyriacou, Paramount’s former President of Broadcast and Studios, who counted Australia among her responsibilities. It also follows a local restructure that saw the departure of Executive VP, Chief Operating and Commercial Officer and Regional Lead Jarrod Villani. McGarvey, previously EVP, Chief Content Officer and Head of Paramount+ Anz, will now report to Pam Kaufman, President & CEO of International Markets, Global Consumer Products and Experiences. Kaufman said Australia was one of Paramount’s “most important, priority markets,” with McGarvey’s promotion reflecting that fact. McGarvey will have commercial and creative leadership of Paramount’s business in Australia, with oversight of Network 10 and its portfolio of brands, including streamer 10 Play. The BAFTA Awards won’t stream the final four categories live this year, the producers have confirmed. They will instead be broadcast as-live on the BBC with a two-hour delay along with the rest of the awards.
The star-studded three hour ceremony will, as usual, be edited down by an hour to make for a 120-minute run-time. It will also be available to watch on the BBC’s streaming service iPlayer and internationally on streamer BritBox.
Last year, for the first time ever, the show ran with its usual two-hour delay but the final four categories were broadcast live, meaning audiences at home got to watch in real time as Austin Butler picked up the award for best actor for “Elvis,” Cate Blanchett received a best actress gong for “Tar,” Emma Mackey won the Rising Star award and “All Quiet on the Western Front” was crowned best film.

BAFTA has updated its campaigning rules for next year’s film awards, and is “having conversations internally” about reviewing its theatrical eligibility rules for 2025 following the Oscars’ expanded geographic criteria requirements.
The British Academy revealed its new rules for the 2024 awards on Wednesday, with stricter regulations around campaigning — particularly in relation to social media — and a new bullying and harassment policy for U.K.-based productions.
Speaking to Variety, BAFTA also revealed that it’s debating changes for the 2025 awards, for which the eligibility period begins in January.
In June, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed a host of new theatrical release requirements for movies to qualify as best picture nominees for the 2025 Oscars. In addition to the standard one-week run in one of six U.S. markets, films released in 2024 will also require an expanded theatrical run of seven days, consecutive or non-consecutive, in 10 of the top 50 U.

Changes also include space for non-binary filmmakers in the best director category and updates to eligibility rules.
Bafta has tightened up rules around campaigning and updated the best director category as part of new voting rules and eligibility criteria unveiled today for the 2024 film awards.
For best director, changes introduced for the 2021 awards created a gender-balanced longlist of 16, comprising eight male and eight female directors, determined by Round One director chapter voting, plus the interventions of the longlisting jury. For 2024, up to 17 directors could be longlisted – including directors who identify as non-binary, and retaining gender parity between men and women.

The British Academy has unveiled various changes and tweaks to its rules for the upcoming 2024 film awards.
The most significant new additions will impact the entries for the outstanding British film and outstanding debut categories, each of which will, for the first time, be required to provide information regarding the bullying and harassment policies put in place during the production. The move builds on guidelines first drawn up by BAFTA alongside various other industry bodies in 2018 in the wake of the MeToo scandal, and will see producers required to show, among other things, that there has been a clear process for people to report any incidents. A more detailed template will be made available in the coming weeks, but those without any policy will need to appeal to the BAFTA Film Committee.

BAFTA has made changes to the voting regulations and eligibility criteria for its 2024 Film Awards. Scroll down for the changes in full.
For the 2024 awards, BAFTA will be giving voters “detailed guidance and regulations on campaigning, hosting screenings, and communicating with voters” via a new handbook.
The move comes after last year’s Oscar race was enlivened by the guerilla campaign from Andrea Riseborough and friends for movie To Leslie. The Academy was moved to review its campaigning procedures after questions were raised over the late-in-the-day celebrity-backed campaign.
As of this year, BAFTA will also require UK-based productions to have a policy in place on tackling bullying and harassment if entering into the Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer categories.

It’s the first major voting body to have honoured the film this season, with many wondering if it could now break into the main categories at the Oscars. The Academy Award nominations are being announced on Tuesday (24 January).
With recognition in 14 categories, it has equalled a record held by Ang Lee’s 2001 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Both films are now the two most-nominated international releases in Bafta history.

Two hosts will present the 2023 ceremony.
The final four categories of the 2023 Bafta Film Awards will broadcast live in the UK on BBC One on February 19 for the first time in its history.
Bafta did not confirm which four awards it will be.
It did reveal the ceremony will have two as-yet-unannounced hosts and will feature plenty of musical performances, buoyed by the warm reception to last year’s performance by Shirley Bassey.
The 2023 ceremony will take place at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, which also housed the gala screenings of this year’s BFI London Film Festival.

Spun Gold, the go-to production company for royal events and documentaries, have been appointed a co-producer of the BAFTA film and TV awards.
The company recently produced Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations for ITV and are known for their royal documentaries, including “Prince William: Monarch in the Making” and “Secrets of the Royals: Inside the Crown.” They were awarded the BAFTA production contract for two years, beginning in 2023, following a tender process.
As part of their remit, they have been tasked with “reimagining and significantly expanding” the awards shows’ production and format for broadcast.
This year’s BAFTA film awards ceremony, which was hosted by Rebel Wilson, drew an average of 2.5 million viewers for its broadcast, down on 2020’s pre-pandemic 3 million. Meanwhile the TV awards, hosted by Richard Ayoade, drew 2.4 million viewers. Both shows are traditionally broadcast an hour or two after they take place, which allows them to be edited.

BAFTA today announced that it will move its annual film awards to the Royal Festival Hall at London’s Southbank Centre for its 2023 edition.

After six years at London’s Royal Albert Hall, the Ee BAFTA Film Awards are shifting venue across the city to the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, which also hosts the BAFTA TV and games awards.
The venue is located in the heart of London on the River Thames, close to landmarks including Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the National Theatre, BFI and the London Eye. In recent years, the Royal Festival Hall has become the flagship venue for red carpet galas at the BFI London Film Festival. “The move will see BAFTA program its most ambitious and accessible night yet, bolstered by a refreshed production and format,” the organization said.
Entries are now open for the 2023 awards, due to be presented on Feb. 19, 2023. The ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One, BBC One HD, BBCiPlayer and syndicated globally.

BAFTA is moving house.
Britain’s premiere film honors, which have for years been held at London’s Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington, will shift a tube stop away and across to the South Bank to the Royal Festival Hall for its 2023 event.
The Royal Festival Hall is a substantially smaller venue, seating around 2,700 to the Royal Albert’s 5,200. It is also a far more modern building. The Royal Albert, built in 1871, is one of the city’s most iconic structures, while the Royal Festival Hall, erected in 1951, displays the more blocky, practical architectural style of the post-World War II period.
But the Royal Festival Hall has the advantage of location, buttressing up against many of London’s most famous landmarks, from Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament to the National Theatre and the London Eye. That backdrop could play well...

The British Academy has made a series of tweaks to the voting rules and eligibility criteria for its 2023 BAFTA film awards, all part of what it calls a continued evolution following the major overhaul that followed the 2020 review.
BAFTA has also confirmed the dates for its initial longlist and nominations announcements, ahead of the ceremony on Feb. 19 (moved back earlier in the year from its April date). The longlist will be unveiled on Jan. 6, 2023, following by nominations on Jan. 19.
Some of the most noticeable changes for BAFTA voters have been put in place due to the earlier dates, with fewer films being longlisted in several categories to ensure people have time to watch them. The longlists for best film and all craft categories have come down from 15 to 10 titles; outstanding British film is now 15 instead of 20, and the director category is reduced from...

BAFTA has made key changes to its awards eligibility and voting rules for next year’s film awards, handing back more power to its voting members in the performance and director categories.
The British Academy faced scrutiny for the 2022 film awards, where only two nominees in each performance category were the result of votes by the membership, and four were selected by juries, while all six director nominees were selected by a jury. The resulting nominations were refreshingly diverse, but BAFTA was criticized in some circles for not placing more trust in its membership and voting chapters.
For the 2023 awards, there will be an equal split between voting-based nominees and jury-based nominees in each performance category, while the directing category will include two vote-based nominees and four jury-based nominees.
Emma Baehr, executive director of awards and content for BAFTA, told Variety: “For the review in 2020, we implemented 120 changes, but we...

As the fallout from Best Actor winner Will Smith’s shocking slap of Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Oscars continues – with academy members debating what kind of punishment Smith should receive – at least one high-profile awards group has said they would have removed Smith from the ceremony after his act of violence.
“They would be removed from the ceremony,” Sara Putt, chair of BAFTA’s television committee and deputy chair of BAFTA, told The Hollywood Reporter when asked this week about the incident. According to Putt, if Smith – or anyone else – had physically confronted a presenter, that person would not be allowed to accept an award later in the ceremony, as Smith did during Sunday’s Oscars broadcast.
In the same interview, BAFTA’s executive director of awards and content, Emma Baehr, added, “We do not tolerate violence of any kind. It’s just a complete red line for us.

More than two-thirds (67%) of this year’s BAFTA TV performance nominees are nominated for the first time, according to the award’s organizers, who hailed the organization’s impact on new voices.
The figure increased rapidly from 55% in 2021 and BAFTA Deputy Chair Sara Putt put this down to the drive for new, diverse talent along with BAFTA’s many programs that are bringing this new talent through.
Diverse performers such as It’s a Sin’s Omari Douglas and Lydia West along with Help’s Cathy Tyson have been recognized for the first time this year, along with creators like Jerk’s Tim Renkow, some of whom are BAFTA program graduates.
They will get the opportunity to go up against huge stars like Mare of Easttown’s Kate Winslet, with this year being the first in which performers in international shows are eligible for the Actor and Actress awards.

Netflix has dropped the trailer for its upcoming adult stop-motion anthology special “The House,” produced by U.K.-based Nexus Studios and coming to the streamer on Jan. 14. BAFTA has unveiled new eligibility rules for British debut movies that will widen the net for emerging filmmakers. For the first time, debut titles can qualify for the awards by screening at certain festivals, while debut films releasing internationally are now also eligible for BAFTAs.
The Academy has said the changes are to ensure that the first film from a debut British writer, director or producer will be considered, rather than only their first film qualifying for a U.K. theatrical release.
The qualifying festivals include: Berlin, Busan, Cannes, Hot Docs, International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, Locarno, Rotterdam, San Sebastian, Sundance, SXSW, Telluride, Toronto, Tribeca and Venice.
U.K. festivals in the mix are Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Sheffield, Leeds, Open City and Oska Bright.
The change, says BAFTA Film Committee chair Anna Higgs, comes as the Academy “continues to shine a spotlight on British talent, and particularly talent at the start of their careers.

The 2020 BAFTA Film Awards shut out actors of color in the four acting races and only nominated male filmmakers in the Best Director race. BAFTA’s film committee chair Marc Samuelson admitted publicly there is an “infuriating lack of diversity in the acting noms,” while adding, “It’s just a frustration that the industry is not moving as fast as certainly the whole BAFTA team would like it to be.”
Samuelson now tells Variety that in the wake of the all-white acting nominations at the 2020 BAFTA Film Awards there will be a “careful and detailed review [of the voting process] within and outside the membership.” The review will be conducted in time for the 2021 nominations.

Exclusive: Yesterday’s BAFTA nominations announcement hit a nerve. The lack of diversity in major categories, including an all-white set of acting nominees and no women up for Best Director for the seventh year in a row, has sparked a backlash.
Today, the chief exec of filmmakers’ body Directors UK, which has more than 7,000 members, is calling for a significant overhaul to the way BAFTA conducts its voting, which it says could rapidly address the issue and transform the nominations.
Speaking to Deadline, Directors UK head Andrew Chowns suggested a solution, which involves using juries for all major categories at the nominations stage to whittle down the contenders to a more manageable number for the wider membership to digest.
“We think that the discussion in the immediate aftermath is missing the point,” said Chowns in response to yesterday’s announcement. “A lot of it seems to be focused on people reaching for the traditional response,...

Backlash to the 2020 BAFTA Awards came quickly after nominations were announced on Tuesday — and actors of color were completely left out.
While Jennifer Lopez has been a fixture in the supporting actress race all awards season, she failed to pick up a nomination for Hustlers at the BAFTAs, who instead nominated Margot Robbie twice in the category.
Other actors of color to have been omitted include: British actress Cynthia Erivo for Harriet, Asian-American actress Awkwafina for The Farewell, Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o for Us, Spanish actor Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory, Eddie Murphy for Dolemite Is My Name, and Jamie Foxx for Just Mercy.

The BAFTA Film Awards nominations revealed this morning in London smiled on fixtures of the season including Joker, The Irishman, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, 1917, Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, Little Women, The Two Popes and Parasite. The acting roster, however, met with jeers over lack of diversity as an all-white field of nominees sparked heated debate, and an all-male Best Director group also drew fire. Meanwhile, could Netflix scoring a streaming record 23 nominations provoke another standoff with exhibition as was the case in 2019?
BAFTA Chief Executive Amanda Berry told BBC Radio 4 today that while she meant no disrespect to “an incredibly strong list” of nominees, she was “very disappointed” in the lack of diversity. BAFTA’s Emma Baehr had also told Deadline that the org would indeed have liked to see a more varied group, and called it “an industry-wide problem” which BAFTA will continue to work on.

The 2020 BAFTA nominations have ignited backlash across the film industry for failing to nominate any women filmmakers in the Best Director category and shutting out actors of color in the four major acting races: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. The nominations are not sitting right with Marc Samuelson, chair of BAFTA’s film committee. Samuelson slammed the all-white and male-heavy 2020 nominations in a statement to Variety, although he suggested the issue lies more with the film industry at large than the BAFTA organization itself.
“Infuriating lack of diversity in the acting noms,” Samuelson said. “It’s just a frustration that the industry is not moving as fast as certainly the whole BAFTA team would like it to be.”
Samuelson added that it was “very disappointing” to have an all-male best director category. “BAFTA can’t tell the studios and the production companies who they...
