Two Chris Pratt blockbusters, one crown.
That’s the situation we’re looking at after both “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” made their streaming debuts last week on Disney+ and Peacock, respectively. But which Pratt vehicle came out on top?
That honor went to “Guardians Vol. 3,” in a reversal of the movies’ box office fortunes.
The Marvel movie, featuring a cast that included returning stars like Zoe Saldana and Vin Diesel alongside Pratt, was the most-streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to the latest Whip Media movie ranker, which is based on viewership data from TV Time, its TV show and movie tracking app with more than 26 million global registered users.
Of course, that means “Super Mario Bros.” grabbed the silver medal for the week.

Two completely different movies just spurred a huge streaming weekend for Paramount+.
The first thing to know: “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” was the most-streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s weekly movie ranker. Whip Media’s ranker is based on viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 26 million global registered users.
“Beasts” took the top spot immediately after making its Paramount+ debut on July 25. But its streaming success wasn’t necessarily a sure thing.
The new “Transformers” movie, directed by Steven Caple Jr. and starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, pulled in about $430 million at the box office. That’s a lot of money, to be sure, but it’s also the smallest amount made out of any of the franchise’s seven installments. Its finish atop Whip Media’s ranker marked the first time since...

When it comes to the biggest names in streaming, it’s getting harder and harder to leave out Apple, especially after Apple TV+’s banner second quarter.
Between April and June, Apple TV+ made more appearances on Whip Media’s weekly SVOD TV ranker, which looks at the 10 most-streamed shows in the U.S. each week, than any other service.
Apple TV+ cracked Whip Media’s TV ranker 31 times during the second quarter, which was an 82% increase from its 17 appearances in Q1. Those 31 appearances also put Apple TV+ ahead of Netflix (26 appearances) and Max (18 appearances), as well as first-quarter streaming king Paramount+, which made Whip Media’s TV ranker 16 times during the second quarter.

It may have cost Disney $300 million, but the company seems to be getting something of a payoff from the expensive box-office launch of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”

The streaming debut of “Evil Dead Rise” helped Max slash its way to second place on the latest Whip Media movie ranker, which is based on viewer data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 26 million global registered users.

Here’s a shocker: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” after recently debuting on both Disney+ and Max, was the most-streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker. Whip Media’s ranker is based on data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with 26 million global registered users.
That probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering James Cameron’s latest “Avatar” movie raked in $2.3 billion at the box office — No. 3 for all time and a post-pandemic record. Still, the streaming crown is another impressive feat, especially when you consider a few other popular movies including “Creed III” made their streaming debuts this past week as well.

It’s been a strong year so far for Paramount+, and it just got a bit better, thanks to “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
The fantasy-heist flick based on the popular tabletop roleplaying game only pulled in $208 million in worldwide box office. But it was the most streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker, which is based on viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.
It’s easy to see why “Honor Among Thieves” has been a streaming hit since debuting on Paramount+ in May. For starters, the cast includes Michelle Rodriguez, Chris Pine and Hugh Grant. It’s also received great reviews from both fans and critics, especially when compared to the underwhelming “D&d” film trilogy that preceded it in the early 2000s.

It’s official: Bennifer is a power couple when it comes to streaming, too.
That much is clear after Ben Affleck’s “Air,” which chronicles Nike’s courtship of Michael Jordan in the mid-’80s, just led Amazon’s Prime Video to its best streaming week of the year. (More on that in a moment.) “Air” finished last weekend as the second-most streamed movie in the U.S., according to Whip Media’s movie ranker, which is based on viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.
The only movie Americans streamed more last weekend? Jennifer Lopez’s “The Mother,” which pushed Netflix to the top of the ranking. And there’s no shame in coming in second place here, considering “The Mother” had the best opening weekend for a Netflix movie in 2023, taking into account every market the streaming giant is in.

And it delivered an immediate impact for Hulu on Whip Media’s movie ranker, which looks at the 10 most-streamed movies of the past weekend.
The movie also left a strong impression on critics, with most complimenting Knightley and Coon for making the crime drama a worthwhile watch. “Though not quite perfect, ‘Boston Strangler,’ the latest from writer-director Matt Ruskin (“Crown Heights”), makes an admirable addition to its often exploitative genre,” Lena Wilson wrote in her review for TheWrap.

Peacock subscribers — perhaps more accurately, their kids — were clearly ready for the movie to hit the service.

Not only is “Creed III” the top movie in the country, but that box office success is also driving interest in the franchise’s previous films, with both “Creed” and “Creed II” cracking Whip Media’s latest movie ranker, which looks at the 10 most-streamed movies of the past weekend, according to viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.
“Creed,” the 2015 film that helped reboot the “Rocky” franchise, was the fifth most-streamed movie, while “Creed II,” the sequel that has Adonis Creed duke it out with Ivan Drago’s son, grabbed the ninth spot.
One key factor in their streaming success: availability. “Creed” and “Creed II” are currently streaming on both HBO Max and Amazon’s Prime Video, giving fans better odds they can watch the movies without having to cough up a couple bucks for a digital rental.

Apple CEO Tim Cook owes Julianne Moore a gift basket — and maybe a MacBook Pro, too, while he’s at it.
Why? Because “Sharper,” the new psychological thriller starring Moore and Sebastian Stan, among others, was the fifth most-streamed movie of the Feb. 17-19 weekend in the U.S., easily propelling Apple TV+ to its best showing of 2023 to this point.
In fact, “Sharper” was the first Apple TV+ flick to crack Whip Media’s Top 10 movie ranker this year.
“Sharper” has received a fairly warm reception from both viewers and critics so far, with the movie currently sporting an audience score of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. TV Time users seem to be enjoying it, too, with “Sharper” earning a 4.2 star rating (out of 5) from viewers, according to Whip viewership data.

Americans ate up romantic comedies heading into Valentine’s Day, with rom-coms dominating Whip Media’s weekly ranker of the most-streamed movies in the U.S. last weekend.
That included “Your Place or Mine,” starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, which pushed Netflix back to the top of Whip Media’s ranker, which is based on data gathered from TV Time, Whip Media’s movie and TV show tracking app with more than 24 million global registered users.
In the new release, longtime friends and former lovers Debbie (Witherspoon) and Peter (Kutcher) switch houses for a week, with Debbie heading to New York and Peter staying in L.A. with her middle-school-age son. And — you guessed it — despite being 3,000 miles apart, emotions get involved and the friends start to think about this becoming more than a friendship.

One sure-fire way to boost viewership? Add a major Marvel flick to your movie lineup. And that’s just what Disney+ did, with the streaming debut of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” pushing the service to the top of Whip Media’s weekly ranker of the most-streamed movies in the U.S., according to data based on followers of WhipMedia’s TV Time, its movie and TV show tracking app with more than 24 million global registered users.
“Wakanda Forever,” after hitting Disney+ on Feb. 1, bumped last week’s top movie, Netflix’s “You People,” down to second place. Its streaming debut came at a critical time for Disney+, too, with Disney reporting on Wednesday that its linchpin service lost 2.4 million customers in its December quarter.
It hasn’t been a red-hot start to 2023 for Disney+, with “Wakanda Forever” being the first Disney+ flick to top Whip Media’s ranker this year.

More than a few people checked out “You People” last weekend, with the new Netflix rom-com earning bragging rights as the most-streamed movie in the U.S., according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker, which draws on data from users of TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 24 million global registered users.
One aspect that certainly didn’t hurt “You People” when it came to drawing eyeballs: the movie’s star power.
Jonah Hill, who also served as producer and co-writer, led the cast. Eddie Murphy plays Akbar, the prickly father of Amira, Hill’s love interest in the film who is portrayed by Lauren London; David Duchovny, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mike Epps and Rhea Perlman are also featured. Kenya Barris, the “Blackish” creator who co-wrote the script alongside Hill, also directed.

A four-and-a-half-year wait hasn’t dampened enthusiasm for “Ant-Man,” with the latest Marvel sequel, once again featuring Paul Rudd in the leading role, topping Whip Media’s list of the most anticipated new movies coming out this month.
“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” grabbed those bragging rights amid a fairly packed slate of new flicks pegged for February, according to Whip Media’s rankings based on users of TV Time, its movie and TV tracking app with more than 24 million global registered users. “Quantumania,” which is set to hit theaters on Feb. 17, will see Evangeline Lilly reprise her role as Wasp. What are viewers in the mood for now that the holidays have wrapped up? Dark comedy horror flicks, apparently. “The Menu” took the top spot in our latest rankings of the most streamed movies in the U.S., according to data from Whip Media’s TV Time app, a TV and movie tracking app with more than 24 million global registered users.
“The Menu” hit HBO Max on Jan. 3 — and fans immediately gravitated towards it. The movie — which has earned 77 million and counting globally at the box office to date — leapfrogged Netflix’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which had led Whip Media’s rankings the previous two weeks.
The rise of “The Menu” pushed “Glass Onion” and Netflix down to second place for the week. Netflix also grabbed the third slot with “The Pale Blue Eye,” Christian Bale’s new thriller about a detective investigating several 19th century murders at the U.

And the year is starting off with a bang, with “The Last of Us” — the most anticipated show of the year, according to Whip Media’s data — hitting HBO Max on Jan. 15.
The new series, based on the popular video game with the same name, will follow a smuggler (Pedro Pascal) who has the responsibility of leading a teenager through a post-apocalyptic USA. Netflix is in an increasingly tough battle to not only add new subscribers but also keep its existing customers engaged — and not watching content on one of its competitors.
Fortunately for Netflix, it has a trick up its sleeve. Why is this important? Because it can help Netflix limit churn (the rate in which subscribers leave a service). More on that in a moment.
First, let’s dive into the data. The fourth season of “Stranger Things” hit Netflix on May 22, and anticipation was high among the show’s fans.

Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett and Letitia Wright will reprise their roles in “Wakanda Forever,...

One obvious sign that Halloween is fast approaching: More horror flicks being streamed. And that’s clearly the case right now, with a handful of scary movies, including Hulu’s “Hellraiser,” grabbing fans’ attention, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker — which reflects data from TV time, a TV and movie app that tracks viewer interest from 22 million global registered users.
For the second straight week, Disney+ had the two most streamed movies in the U.S. “Hocus Pocus 2,” which topped the Whip Media chart last week dropped to second place last weekend. Taking its No. 1 spot was “Werewolf by Night,” the new fantasy-horror special from Marvel that was released on Oct. 7.

It might be time for Disney to pencil in “Hocus Pocus 3” on its production calendar already. And based on how “How Pocus 2” performed for Disney+ in its debut weekend, there probably won’t be a 29-year gap between movies, either.
“Hocus Pocus 2,” the sequel to the 1993 comedy-fantasy classic, was the most streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s movie ranker — which reflects data from TV Time, a television and movie app that tracks viewer interest across 22 million global registered users.
And not only did the flick — which saw Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy reprise their roles from the first film — take the top spot in Whip Media’s rankings, it also helped push “Hocus Pocus” into second place for the weekend.

DC’s next installment, the latest “Halloween” flick, David O. Russell’s new star-studded film and another Harry Styles movie set in the 1950s are among the 10 most-anticipated movies of October.
As you might’ve guessed, “Black Adam,” the upcoming DC Comics blockbuster starring Dwayne Johnson, is the most anticipated movie of October, according to Whip Media’s U.S. Movie Anticipation Report, which reflects data from TV Time, a television and movie app that tracks viewer interest across 22 million global registered users.
“Black Adam” will see the Justice Society of America try to harness the antihero’s powers for good, rather than destruction, as he takes on an evil foe. Fans are clearly excited about Johnson’s starring superhero role. Last year, producer Hiram Garcia told TheWrap the brain trust behind the movie “mean business.”

“Abbott Elementary” won big at the Emmys earlier this month — and its winning streak didn’t stop there.
The ABC comedy series, created by and starring Quinta Brunson, saw a significant increase in fan interest following its Emmy wins, according to Whip Media data from TV Time, a TV and movie app that tracks viewer interest across 22 million global registered users.
In the seven days after the Emmys, “Abbott Elementary’s” followers on TV Time surged 10.3. Those gains were due in large part to the spike the comedy received on Sept. 13 — the day following the Emmys telecast — when the show had a nearly six-fold increase in followers day-over-day.

Apple TV+ is finally here and it might be the perfect streaming service for those afraid of commitment — at least for now. Apple confirmed to TheWrap on Friday that two episodes of each Apple TV+ series are available for free to those using the Apple TV app. So you can watch Episodes 1 and 2 of each of Apple’s original shows before you are asked to sign up for the platform’s 7-day free trial — as long as you use the Apple TV app.
There’s no word yet on how long this promotion, which was not revealed ahead of the streaming service’s launch, will last.
As you can see in the screengrabs below, a user is given the ability to play the first and second episode of Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s “Morning Show,” but when you arrive at the third, you’ll be asked to “Try Apple...

On Wednesday Disney will face the Wall Street community in its first quarterly earnings report since closing its $71.3 billion deal to lap up the films, franchises and studio operations of 21st Century Fox’s film and TV entertainment business.
But despite the oversize success of “Avengers: Endgame” — which opened in this quarter and has grossed an astonishing $2.2 billion worldwide in less than two weeks — Cfra Research media analyst Tuna Amobi expects that the media giant’s earnings for the pre-“Endgame” quarter that ended March 31 to be “mixed at best.”
Analysts tracking the company expect Disney to report per-share earnings of $1.59, according to estimates gathered by Yahoo Finance. That would be down compared with the $1.84 earnings Disney reported during the same period a year ago when “Black Panther” emerged as a surprise mega-blockbuster.
Disney’s revenue for the quarter is also expected to be down compared with last year, with analysts forecasting $14.39 billion in revenue,...

A Delaware judge on Wednesday said that he had “great skepticism” about the mental condition of CBS chairman emeritus Sumner Redstone and ruled against having him deposed in an ongoing court case, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Even so, Judge Andre Bouchard ruled against public release of a videotape of Redstone made by CBS director Arnold Kopelson last January that the company has said shows the 95-year-old in poor mental and physical health.
Bouchard also ordered National Amusements Inc. — the Redstone family holding company that owns roughly 80 percent of CBS and Viacom and that has been in a pitched legal battle with CBS — is required to hand over documents that the media company suspects will help shine a light on who is calling the shots at Nai.

There’s no business like showbusiness, and few bank on that fact yearly quite like Hollywood’s top executives.
Based on compensation that has been reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission this year, the industry’s top earner is CBS chief Leslie Moonves — and it’s not even close.
Earning a cool $69.3 million in 2017, Moonves’ take is a whopping $20 million higher than the next-richest guy of the last 12 months, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes. Hell, Les made damn near twice what Disney’s top executive Bob Iger did in 2017.
Please, no one tell Dish Network head honcho Charlie Ergen what Moonves made — he’ll pass out.
