Critics are blasting Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) for her poor management of the state of Arkansas while she eyes the national spotlight.
Arkansas chicken growers are still reeling after the state euthanized a million chickens last year.
The Huckabee-run Arkansas Department of Agriculture helped kill the chickens for Cooks Venture, a poultry firm closed due to financial issues.
The state Legislature’s Joint Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development heard testimony his month that the cull had been poorly managed and messaged.
It’s just the latest scandal to beset the Huckabee administration, which is in turmoil as the governor eyes a potential cabinet position in a second Trump administration.
In March 2023, Sanders signed House Bill 1410, also known as the Youth Hiring Act of 2023, which would eliminate a measure requiring employers to procure work certificates for children under the age of 16.

Welcome to ElectionLine’s A View From Abroad series, in which we speak with media figures who don’t live in America but keep a close eye on its politics. Every few weeks, these smart observers will provide a unique perspective on what promises to be a fraught and unpredictable campaign for the White House. This week, our interview is with Richard Madan, the award-winning Washington D.C. correspondent for Canada’s CBC News.
When Richard Madan and his crew get out of Washington D.C. to talk to American voters, they sometimes stick a tiny Canadian flag on the viewfinder of their camera. It’s a signal to contributors that they come in peace and Canadian pleasantries — and, by and large, it’s effective.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) vetoed Republican Senate Bill 436, which would have allowed 14- and 15-year-old Wisconsin teenagers to work without permits.
Evers vetoed this bill during the Wisconsin State Council of Machinists Conference, which was held at a Capitol Square hotel alongside members of the labor group Wisconsin AFL-CIO.
“Growing up, it shouldn’t be worrying about getting injured on the job, or receiving a fair wage for their work, or being taken advantage of,” he stated shortly before issuing the veto. “It’s time that Republicans get real about the real pressing challenges, and I’ve put them on notice.”
The bill would effectively abolish work permits for 14- and 15-year-olds in Wisconsin, as state law changed in 2017 to remove this prerequisite for 16- and 17-year-olds. This law replaced references to “child labor” in state statutes with the “employment of minors.”

Missed Monday’s late-night monologues? We’ve got you covered with our round-up of the night’s best laughs from across the dial.
Dogs and Cats, Living Together…
Well, the total solar eclipse came and went in the run-up to each late-night show’s taping on Monday. And, confounding evangelicals, the superstitious, and Republican politicians from Marjorie Taylor Green to Mike Johnson to Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the biblical Rapture did not arrive with it to sweep the (self-)righteous up to Heaven. That left those who attempted to lay blame for this week’s spate of unusual natural phenomena on the Lgbtqi community, abortion, Joe Biden, immigrants, and other people they don’t like with egg on their flushing, still earth-bound faces.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) signed a bill into law that would eliminate a major child labor protection law in the state.
The bill, which was signed by Sanders in early March 2023, eliminates a measure that required employers to procure work certificates for children who are below the age of 16.
“The governor believes protecting kids is most important, but this permit was an arbitrary burden on parents to get permission from the government for their child to get a job,” Sanders’ spokesperson Alexa Henning declared in a statement. “All child labor laws that actually protect children still apply and we expect businesses to comply just as they are required to do now.”
Minors under the age of 16 originally needed to verify their age and get their parents’ or guardians’ written consent before the state’s Division of Labor sent out a work certificate.

Enrique Tarrio — the capo of the Proud Boys on Jan. 6 — has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for his part in the seditious conspiracy to block the peaceful transfer of power to President Joe Biden following the 2020 election. Tarrio’s two-decade sentence — the stiffest yet for a Jan. 6 defendant — was handed down Tuesday afternoon in a packed Washington, D.C., courtroom.
Tarrio’s prison term tops that delivered to Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the Oath Keepers, who received 18 years for leading that militia’s seditious conspiracy plot on Jan.

Another alum from Joe Biden’s administration has landed at cable news networks.
Jamal Simmons, who was Vice President Kamala Harris’ communications director until early this year, has joined CNN as on-air political commentator.
Before he took the job with Harris, Simmons already was a frequent TV presence, as a political contributor for CBS News and NPR. He also hosted digital interviews for Hill TV. Previously, he was at the Raben Group, advising political and foundation leaders, and was an Obama campaign surrogate and senior adviser to the Democratic National Committee.
Simmons, who will be based in New York, follows other Biden figures to cable. Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki hosts a weekend MSNBC show and serves as political commentator for the network, while Symone Sanders-Townsend, former chief spokesperson and senior adviser to Harris, also headlines an MSNBC show.

Rachel Maddow on Monday night took a moment to examine the state of the Republican Party — first through the lens of the presumed 2024 GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, and second through the lens of other leaders within the party.
Using Arkansas governor and former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders as a case study, the MSNBC host of “The Rachel Maddow Show” determined that “they haven’t exactly been cleaning up on big, political-winning issues just in the current news cycle.”
Maddow took particular issue with Huckabee Sanders’ efforts to end school desegregation settlements and minimize the restrictions of child labor laws in her state.
“Don’t worry, Republicans are in control in Arkansas, and they’re on both those big problems,” Maddow said sarcastically.
Beginning her segment Monday night, Maddow gave a brief recap of how Trumpism has influenced the GOP, looking back to the party’s stuttered,...

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is off to a furious start as governor of Arkansas. She’d signed over 140 bills into law in less than 50 days on the job, as of the end of February, taking on pressing issues like what constitutes an “adult-oriented performance.” The number keeps increasing, with Sanders this week signing a new law rolling back restrictions on child labor.

A glimpse of stocking was once deemed shocking. But today, heaven knows…there are still limits on what you can say on certain broadcast outlets.
Bill Maher found that out the hard way.
Maher recently joined CNN with the segment Overtime, which uses the guests from his HBO show Real Time in an extended conversation.
The host was speaking with Kristen Soltis Anderson about Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The topic was “nepo babies,” the children of famous parents who got a leg up thanks to that association.
Maher expressed outrage that there was a perceived advantage. He said acting was not “f***ing hard,” before laughing and apologizing to CNN.
“Sorry, CNN. I know. I forgot. You’re not supposed to – Not on HBO.”

Former President Accused of Attempting Coup Calls Biden ‘Most Corrupt President in American History’
President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday evening — a soft launch of sorts to his 2024 re-election campaign — called for for bipartisan unity while admonishing GOP efforts to undermine his party’s accomplishments. Trump, who has already declared his run for the White House, delivered his rebuttal to Biden as the two men brace for a potential showdown next year.

President Joe Biden exhorted Republicans over and again Tuesday night to work with him to “finish the job” of rebuilding the economy and uniting the nation as he delivered a State of the Union address meant to reassure a country beset by pessimism and fraught political divisions.
The backdrop for the annual address was markedly different from the previous two years, with a Republican speaker sitting expressionless behind Biden and newly empowered GOP lawmakers in the chamber sometimes shouting criticism of his administration and policies.
In his 73-minute speech, Biden sought to portray a nation dramatically improved from the one he took charge of two years ago: from a reeling economy to one prosperous with new jobs; from a crippled, pandemic-weary nation to one that has now reopened, and a democracy that has survived its biggest test since the Civil War.
“The story of America is a story of progress and resilience.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden will deliver his 2023 State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress. During his speech, Biden will outline his plans for the rest of the year and highlight the progress his administration has made so far during his term.
Biden will likely mention the recently increased tensions between China, Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine and the inflating economy. This will be the first time since 2019 that the president and congressional leaders are allowed to bring guests to the event, which includes all members of the House of Representatives and the Senate. With a split Congress — due to a now Republican-controlled U.S. House — this will also be the first time Biden delivers a speech to a divided Congress.

President Joe Biden will deliver the annual State of the Union address tonight from the Capitol.
It will be Biden’s first major national address under a divided Congress, with newly empowered House Republicans working to paint the president and his family as weak, corrupt, and anti-American ahead of a potential 2024 showdown with Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, or whomever else the party may nominate to retake the White House.
Biden is expected to tout his accomplishments over the past two years and lay out how his administration’s agenda benefits everyday Americans.

Aidy Bryant spent a decade of her life as one of the more recognizable players on “Saturday Night Live.” But on a recent afternoon, as she’s being photographed in Bryant Park (get it?), she manages to stump a stranger. This curious woman cranes her neck at Bryant, who is minding her own business, posing near the New York Public Library in a flowy black dress and silver pumps.
“What are you in?” the woman asks, spotting a familiar face.
Bryant, 35, is too polite to brush her away. She stops mid-pose to drop the name of her most famous job. “I love saying my credits,” Bryant says when the woman is out of earshot.
On “SNL,” Bryant became a household name by impersonating everyone from Adele to Rebel Wilson — and she had a special talent for playing polarizing political conservatives including Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Meghan McCain and (most hilarious of all) Ted Cruz.

Onetime Trump Administration Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is projected to win the Republican primary in the race to be Arkansas’ next governor, a position held by her father from 1996-2007. The Associated Press called the primary race in Sanders’ favor early this evening.
Huckabee Sanders took over the White House Briefing Room podium from Sean Spicer in July 2017 and almost immediately established herself as a fierce defender of Trump and his policies. Her tenure was marked by sometimes-ugly clashes with with the White House press corps — famously CNN’s Jim Acosta — and Democrats’ accusations she spread falsehoods.
Trump announced her departure with an appreciative 2019 tweet in which he also said, “I hope she decides to run for Governor of Arkansas – she would be fantastic. Sarah, thank you for a job well done!”
A few months later, she debuted as a Fox News contributor on Fox & Friends.

Exclusive: Saturday Night Live is set for its biggest change in a number of years.
Deadline understands that a number of long-featured stars including Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Pete Davidson are expected to leave the show at the end of this season.
It comes after creator Lorne Michaels admitted that he was expecting this year to be a “year of change” for the show.
We hear that there may be a big group goodbye, featuring all four the departees, at the end of tomorrow night’s episode, which is hosted by Natasha Lyonne.
It’s not a huge surprise given that this season – season 47 – featured its largest ever cast with 21 stars and eight cast members that were entering their eighth season and beyond.
In addition to McKinnon, Davidson, Bryant and Mooney, those who have been on the show for eight seasons or more including Michael Che, Colin Jost,...

Some of “Saturday Night Live’s” biggest stars are expected to depart the cast in the biggest shakeup to the late-night show in years. Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney are all expected to depart, as Variety and Deadline each reported.
“SNL” honcho Lorne Michaels previously hinted that the next season of the long-running NBC sketch show would be “a year of change.” At the time, that seemed to point more toward “Weekend Update” co-anchor Michael Che, who recently told the New York Times that he’d been thinking of leaving “SNL” for the “past five seasons.”

President Joe Biden and comedian Trevor Noah wrapped up their routines at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner with appeals for the work of journalists and freedom of the press.
“American democracy is not a reality show,” the president said,
Yet one of the elements that has made the dinner different from a number of other First Amendment events on the D.C. calendar is the dinner’s size and scope, not to mention a kind of surreal nature to the mix of the Council on Foreign Relations and TMZ set. It’s why C-span for years has provided red carpet coverage, even in the years when Biden’s predecessor, the reality show president Donald Trump, has skipped the event.

Organizers behind the White House Correspondents’ Dinner are leaning into the event’s showbiz trappings after a two-year pandemic break.
This year’s gala, produced by veteran Hollywood awards show producer Bob Bain and slated to be aired on C-span, has a celebrity host in comedian Trevor Noah, an opening skit by James Corden, and a greater number of cameras than usual to capture more of the star-studded audience.
Most notably, President Joe Biden is expected to attend the hourlong April 30 dinner, resuming a tradition that Donald Trump suspended while in office. Network news divisions have also invited celebrities such as Kim Kardashian to the event, dubbed the Nerd Prom for the social swirl surrounding it, with a Paramount after-party and dueling Sunday brunches hosted by Politico and CNN among the tie-in gatherings.

Will Smith’s decision to walk onstage at the Oscars and smack the hell out of Chris Rock has inspired a, uhh, rather sizable amount of opinion discourse. Lawmakers and political commentators have been unable to resist attempting to funnel it through the prism of politics. In less than 24 hours, the actor slapping the comedian for making fun of his wife on international television has been used to explain the war in Ukraine, gender- and race-based double standards, Trump’s hold over United States, and countless other real or imagined societal issues currently plaguing America.

Kayleigh McEnany, the former White House Press Secretary during the Trump administration, will take on a regular anchoring job at Fox News Channel, co-hosting the daytime program, “Outnumbered,” a move that helps cement the Fox Corporation-backed outlet’s Trump ties in the aftermath of the 2020 election.
Starting April 6, McEnany will appear regularly on the program along with Harris Faulkner, who has been a regular presence on the show since its launch in 2014, as well as Emily Compagno, a co-host, and a rotating panel of guests. Former President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump has joined Fox News as a contributor, an announcement made when she appeared on Fox & Friends on Monday, as she also said that she is still considering running for Senate in North Carolina.
Trump was senior adviser to her father-in-law’s reelection campaign.
“Welcome to the family, Lara,” co-host Ainsley Earhardt said in the segment.
“I sort of feel like I’ve been an unofficial member of the team for so long,” she said. “You guys know, it was kind of a joke over the past five years, I would come there so often that the security guards were like maybe we should just give you a key. So to be part of the team I am so, so excited.”
Sen. Richard Burr (R-nc) is retiring and will not seek reelection in 2022. Lara Trump was asked about reports that she is considering running.

Kayleigh McEnany, a White House Press Secretary during the Trump administration whose performance in the role drew criticism, has joined Fox News as a contributor, the network announced Tuesday. Details were revealed during an on-air interview with Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner.
McEnany isn’t the first Trump administration official to take an on-air role with the Fox Corp.-backed outlet. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a McEnany predecessor in the White House press operations, became a contributor in 2019, and recently stepped down to pursue a run for governor of Arkansas. Fox News Channel held talks with Kayleigh McEnany, the former White House Press Secretary whose performance in the role earned sharp criticism, about a possible position at the cable-news outlet, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Those conversations have yet to bear fruit. “Kayleigh McEnany is not currently an employee or contributor at Fox News,” the Fox Corporation-owned network said in a statement Tuesday.
Fox and McEnany held talks after the 2020 election, this person says, but paused them for a reason that was not discussed. The network remains open to hiring McEnany, who first came to wider prominence as a contributor at CNN in the run-up to the nation’s 2016 election. While McEnany’s routine use of press conferences at the White House to insult reporters while not answering many questions in direct fashion has resulted in many detractors, Fox News executives “do not condone cancel culture,” this person said.

Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made it official on Monday that she is running for governor of Arkansas, posting an announcement video that has echoes of Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign.
“As governor, I will defend our right to be free of socialism and tyranny, your Second Amendment right to keep your family safe and your freedom of speech and religious liberty,” she said. “Our state needs a leader with the courage to do what’s right, not what’s political correct or convenient.”
She also refers to “far left and their allies at CNN or the New York Times,” an indication that at least part of her campaign will co-opt Trump’s attacks on the news media.
Sanders was White House press secretary from 2017 to 2019, the longest tenure of any of the four figures who were in that role during Trump’s term.

Sara Haines has been confirmed to return to ABC’s The View as a permanent co-host as the show returns next week for its 24th season, when a focus of the show will be on the final months of the 2020 presidential campaign.

In an interview, senior executive producer Hilary Estey McLoughlin said that Haines “is great in either place, which is rare to have somebody who is able to deal with such complex topics that we talk about on The View, and give a perspective that is smart. She brings a lot of zest to the conversation, in addition to being very relatable at the same time.
