It’s only fitting that on the day the score drops for Challengers, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Thom Yorke’s first score since Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria would arrive. The Radiohead and Smile frontman’s latest work is the 12-track score for Daniele Luchetti’s Confidenza aka Trust, the Italian director adaptation of Domenico Starnone’s novel.

Throughout the five episodes of Brigands: The Quest for Gold, we’ve learned that the real goal isn’t just about the gold itself, but the freedom of Southern Italy. Then there’s Michelina, another leader from the Guerra group. According to prophecy, she’s the one destined to save the South. And let’s not forget Sparrowhawk, the notorious bounty hunter, and Filomena’s love interest. Together, these unlikely allies have formed a strong alliance to reclaim the stolen gold and free...

“If I were you, I’d run away/Get out while you still can,” Thom Yorke sings on his new song “Knife Edge.” “‘Cause this to me is life or death/And all I think about.” The pensive song, which ambles along slowly with piano and sparse strings, comes off the soundtrack to Confidenza, a new film by director Daniele Luchetti (My Brilliant Friend).
The music video for the tune shows footage from the movie, which is based on author Domenico Starnone’s novel of the same title about a doomed couple.

Wanda’s journey in the MCU is truly tragic. After losing everything in the Novi Grad Bombings, she and her brother Pietro sought power for revenge against Tony Stark. Pietro sacrificed himself battling Ultron, leaving Wanda to find solace in her love for Vision and her fight against Thanos. Despite her losses—Vision, her children, and her sanity—she emerged as the formidable Scarlet Witch.
Even in her darkest moments, Wanda showed heroism by destroying the Darkhold and seemingly sacrificing herself. However, rumors suggest she may return. According to reliable sources like MyTimeToShineHello, there’s talk of a standalone Scarlet Witch movie, possibly between ‘Avengers 5’ and ‘Secret Wars,’ or after ‘Secret Wars’ hits theaters. Fans hold onto hope that one of the mightiest Avengers isn’t gone for good.

Wanda’s story in the MCU is one of the most heartbreaking. She lost everything in the Novi Grad Bombings, and then, along with her brother Pietro, she turned to desperate means to secure some kind of power to get their vengeance on Tony Stark.
Pietro was lost when the twins turned on Ultron in self-sacrifice, but Wanda continued on, fell in love with Vision, and took a stand against Thanos. By the end of her career in the MCU, she would lose Vision, her imaginary children, and ultimately her own sanity, but she would gain something far more powerful: the powers of Scarlet Witch.
Still even as a villain Wanda did one thing right: she collapsed the Darkhold Castle on Wundagore Mountain on top of herself, destroying every single copy of Darkhold in existence, and the collapse of the castle seemingly led to her death. While her death was...

This post contains spoilers for Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #1.
Who are Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch? Most would say that they are Marvel superheroes, twin members of the Avengers and, sometimes, the X-Men. And while those answers aren’t wrong, the truth has always been a bit more complicated when it comes to these two. And the new series Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #1 — by writer Steve Orlando, artist Lorenzo Tammetta, colorist Frank William, and letterer Ariana Maher — only makes it more complicated.
Since their first appearance in 1964’s X-Men #4, the twins have gone from heroes to villains and back again. Moreover, their parentage has changed time and again, going from the kids of Romani villagers Django and Marya Maximoff to the children of Golden Age heroes Miss America and the Whizzer. In the most popular and most long-running explanation, Magneto has been presented as the true father of Pietro and Wanda.

Thom Yorke has composed the soundtrack for Italian director Daniele Luchetti’s relationship drama “Trust,” which will soon launch in competition from the Rotterdam Film Festival.
Yorke’s work with Luchetti on “Trust” marks the second feature fully scored by the Radiohead and the Smile frontman since working on Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 “Suspiria” remake. The following year, in 2019, Yorke contributed to Edward Norton’s “Motherless Brooklyn.”
“Trust,” which is based on the novel “Confidenza” by Neapolitan writer Domenico Starnone, centers on a teacher in his 40s named Pietro Vella – played by A-list Italian actor Elio Germano – who works in a rundown Roman high school. He becomes romantically entangled with a former student years after they intersect in class. Their affair triggers some deep-seated fears in Pietro.

Wanda’s journey in the MCU is profoundly poignant. Amidst the devastating Novi Grad Bombings, she endured loss and, alongside her brother Pietro, resorted to desperate measures to acquire power for retribution against Tony Stark. Pietro sacrificed himself when they turned against Ultron, leaving Wanda to navigate a path of love with Vision and defiance against Thanos.
Her MCU tenure saw the wrenching loss of Vision, her imagined children, and ultimately her sanity. Yet, she gained a potent compensation—the formidable powers of Scarlet Witch. Before her departure, Wanda executed a crucial act: she obliterated the Darkhold Castle on Wundagore Mountain, eliminating every copy of the Darkhold. The castle’s collapse seemingly claimed her life, as affirmed in the 2023 MCU timeline book. However, fans, fueled by hope, challenge the notion that one of the mightiest Avengers succumbed to mere rubble.

Veteran cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto’s versatility could not be more evident than in his most recent work, which called for filming a 1920s Osage Nation in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and shooting the candy-colored Barbie Land of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Born in Mexico City to a bicultural family (his mom is an American from Montana), Prieto caught the cinematography world’s attention in 2000 when he won the Camerimage Golden Frog for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Amores Perros. Since moving to the U.S., he continued lensing for Iñárritu while also collaborating with Pedro Almodóvar, Oliver Stone, Ben Affleck (on the Oscar best picture winner Argo) and Ang Lee, whose Brokeback Mountain delivered the Dp the first of his three Academy Award nominations. Budding filmmaker Enea and medical student Pietro see each other for the first time at a film set in Rome. The year is 1978. Not a word is spoken between the two of them, but their eyes meet. Butterflies start to fly inside their stomachs. Enea is obviously working there, and Pietro is just passing by. Soon, they meet in Nuovo Olimpo, a movie theater that only plays black-and-white classic films from the old days. The theater also happens to be a safe place for gay men to have quick rendezvous. Titti, the matronly woman who sits at the ticket counter, is progressive enough to aid all these men in their exploration and, at times, give them necessary guidance. Enea and Pietro don’t take much time to hit it off. Pietro is initially nervous, as he has never been with a man before. Enea is rather flamboyant and confident, is smitten by Pietro,...

Maura Delpero’s second feature “Vermiglio, the Mountain Bride” – which is being presented at the Venice Production Bridge, the industry program of the Venice Film Festival, this week – has tapped Giuseppe De Domenico as its lead.
The Italian actor, known for “Zero Zero Zero” and Prime Video’s “Bang Bang Baby,” will play Pietro, a young soldier who in 1944 arrives in a small mountain village in Trentino, northern Italy.
As declared by the film’s tagline, change is around the corner: “Last year of World War II. In the Italian Alps, a single rifle shot ends a young woman’s innocence.”
“Maura saw many young actors and some of them were very good, but Giuseppe was able to stand out thanks to his subtle acting style. He understood what it meant to come back from a war,” says Francesca Andreoli, who produces for Italy’s Cinedora.

Cinema Italiano is on a roll, as reflected by the fact that this year Italy has scored three Cannes competition slots.
Despite the persisting sore spot that sees the country still lagging behind other European territories in terms of post-pandemic box office returns, Italy “continues to produce and invest heavily in film and is overcoming the crisis,” noted Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux after announcing the lineup.
The robust Croisette contingent marks the second time in 20 years that Italy lands three Cannes competition berths. Though the trio of selected directors — Marco Bellocchio, Nanni Moretti and Alice Rohrwacher — are all Cannes regulars “they represent three different generations of auteurs,” said Paolo Del Brocco, chief of state broadcaster Rai’s Rai Cinema arm that co-produced all three titles. And each of these films, he went on to point out, displays “very different ideas and cinematic visions.”

Editors note: This review was originally published May 18 after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival where it co-won the Jury Prize. It opens in New York theaters Friday.
After breaking out internationally in 2012 with his Oscar-nominated drama The Broken Circle Breakdown, and making his Hollywood debut in 2018 with Beautiful Boy, Felix van Groeningen makes his Competition debut in Cannes with The Eight Mountains, perhaps the most understated film of his career so far.
This is a gentle tale of a decades-spanning friendship that seems a little out of its depth in such a heavyweight showcase. With terrific cinematography and two engaging leads, it’s easy on the eye — as well it should be at two hours and 27 minutes — but it’s lackluster in its telling and pales next to Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God, which covered similar themes of adolescence and young adulthood last awards season.

Italian director Daniele Luchetti, who most recently helmed the third season of Rai/HBO’s Elena Ferrante series “My Brilliant Friend,” is working on a new film titled “Confidenza” (“Trust”) toplining Elio Germano.
Luchetti previously directed Germano in the drama “Our Life” in a role that in 2015 won the actor top honors in Cannes.
Vision Distribution is launching sales on “Trust” at the European Film Market.
In “Trust” Germano plays a teacher in his forties named Pietro Vella who works in a rundown Roman high school. He strongly believes he can help students strive for a better future and Teresa, and bright and rebellious student, is totally taken with him and his lessons. Then, a few years later, they meet up again and get romantically entangled. Teresa insists they must share their deepest secrets to bond for life. But as soon as Pietro really opens up, the relationship ends.

Sometimes, it feels like Mephisto rumors have been around as long as the ageless Marvel supervillain himself. At the very least, you can count the passage of time by them. Remember when everyone thought Jake Gyllenhaal's character in "Spider-Man: Far From Home" would be Mephisto, only for the character to be revealed as an ex-Stark Industries employee with a grudge? What about when people were convinced Evan Peters' off-brand Pietro would be the demon in disguise in "WandaVision"? /Film's own history with Mephisto hype goes at least as far back as 2014, when we pondered the idea of none other than Al Pacino as the big bad.
The demon has long been on the mind of Marvel fans, even if he's yet to make his official Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Most recently, Sacha Baron Cohen's name has been thrown in the running, and with Deadline reporting that the "Borat" star might appear in "Ironheart,...

This article contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
After Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) appeared to sacrifice herself to destroy Mount Wundagore in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans have been wondering when or if the Scarlet Witch will make a return to the MCU. While the fate of the Wanda Maximoff we know and love may still be up in the air, neither Elizabeth Olsen nor MCU mastermind Kevin Feige seem ready to say goodbye to the character just yet.
Feige has been vocal about his love of Elizabeth Olsen as an actor, telling Variety that the only reason they even attempted WandaVision was because she is “such an outstanding actor” and goes on to say that he’d work with her “for another 100 years if we could.” When asked about Wanda’s fate in Multiverse of Madness, Feige insists that we never actually...

Marvel Boss Kevin Feige Teases Elizabeth Olsen’s MCU Return: ‘Anything’s Possible in the Multiverse’
Elizabeth Olsen is one of creative leaders honored for Variety’s 2022 Power of Women presented by Lifetime. For more, click here.
Elizabeth Olsen’s film career began — explosively — with the 2011 Sundance sensation “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” after which she went to co-star in a number of independent films. But she soon noticed, Olsen tells Variety in an interview for her Power of Women cover story, that she was perhaps being pigeonholed.
“I wasn’t being considered for studio films,” Olsen says. “I asked my agent and manager why, and they said, ‘Well, you don’t do them.’”
So Olsen began taking what are called “general” meetings in order to broaden her repertoire. As she filmed reshoots for Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla” — which was very much a studio movie — Olsen found herself having tea with “Avengers” director Joss Whedon for a possible role in his upcoming sequel “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Coincidentally,...

Among the many esteemed guests to visit Sdcc last weekend, one of the most notable, yet underlooked, arrived during the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 presentation. As director James Gunn and members of the cast stood on the stage, a haughty man draped in purple made his way from the back of Hall H. His arms outstretched, a look of contempt and pity on his face, the purple man moved to the crowd and unceremoniously grabbed the mic from Gunn. “Call me sire,” he demanded.
Of course, the man in question is actually Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji, who will be playing baddie the High Evolutionary in Guardians Vol. 3. The High Evolutionary may not be the most famous of Marvel’s bad guys, but his introduction comes at a pivotal moment in the MCU, giving him the potential to forever change the face of the franchise.

Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired North American rights to Cannes Jury Prize winner “The Eight Mountains” by Belgian directors Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch.
The Italian-language film, which tracks the decades-long friendship between two Italian boys named Pietro and Bruno — one from the city, the other a shepherd boy from the Alps — was praised as “quietly magnificent” by Variety critic Jessica Kiang.
Kiang also praised the pic’s “slow, gradual accretion of detail that builds to a spectacular vista across the ridges and troughs, the spires and valleys of a lifelong, life-defining friendship.”
The drama about friendship, mountains, growing up, and our changed rapport with the planet in the wake of the pandemic stars Italian A-lister Luca Marinelli (“Martin Eden”) and Alessandro Borghi (“Devils”) — respectively as Pietro and Bruno — as well as Filippo Timi (“Vincere”) and Elena Lietti (“Three Floors”).

“Recasting” WandaVision‘s Pietro with what at least looked like the X-Men movies’ version of same was easier typed than done, says the hit Disney+ series’ head writer.
At the very end of WandaVision‘s fifth episode of nine, a tense moment between the titular marrieds was interrupted by a knock at the front door. Their unexpected visitor was Wanda’s long-mia brother Pietro — except here he was played by Evan Peters (of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix), and not by the MCU’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson (of Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Disney+’s first Marvel series, WandaVision, wrapped its nine-episode run this Friday. Was it able to conjure a super-satisfying finish, even without a big, surprising cameo?
“The Series Finale” (as the episode was titled) picked up where we left off, with Wanda squaring off against Agatha Harkness on Sherwood Drive — but as Wanda quickly learned, Agatha has the ability to “take power from the undeserving. It’s kinda my thing.” So with every red blast Wanda lobs, Agatha grows stronger and Wanda becomes weaker and ashen. Agatha offers a deal: surrender, and she will let Wanda stay happy in this “pathetic corner of the world.

For the last seven weeks, WandaVision fans have tried to conjure a major Marvel cameo almost as hard as Wanda worked to whip up her sitcom world. And with the Disney+ series wrapping its run on Friday, only one episode remained for a jaw-dropping surprise appearance.
There was ample reason to suspect a familiar face from the Marvel Cinematic Universe would drop by: Ahead of WandaVision‘s premiere, star Paul Bettany said the show would welcome “this actor that I’ve always wanted to work with,” whose scenes with Bettany would feature “extraordinary” chemistry.
