The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.
The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”
Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “The Creator,” “Godzilla Minus One,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “Napoleon.” Our odds currently indicate that “Godzilla Minus One” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “The Creator” (18/5), the new “Guardians” entry (9/2), “Napoleon” (9/2), and the latest “Mission: Impossible” chapter (9/2).
Included among the 17 individuals in this lineup are 13 first-timers who constitute the category’s largest newcomer rate since the minimum annual amount of nominated films was set at five in 2011. This vast majority comprises all four “Godzilla Minus One” team members, dual contender Simone Coco (“Mission: Impossible” and “Napoleon”), three artists from “The Creator”, two from “Guardians of the Galaxy” (Theo Bialek and Alexis Wajsbrot), two more from “Mission: Impossible” (Jeff Sutherland and Alex Wuttke), and one more from “Napoleon” (Luc-Ewen Martin-Fenouillet).

Best Visual Effects is one of my personal favorite Oscar categories, but this year it’s one without a single Best Picture nominee in the bunch, which isn’t that uncommon — it happened most recently in 2020. Not that it necessarily matters, since not a single movie that has won Best Picture has also won this category going all the way back to Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2003. In fact, that was the last Best Picture winner to even be nominated in this category.
Two of the movies nominated this year received no other nominations, while the others only received one or two additional below-the-line bids. What’s interesting is that there is only one visual effects nominee that is also nominated for its production design: Ridley Scott‘s “Napoleon,” which only received three below-the-line nominations total. Alright, who here saw John Boyega on a fast track to stardom after "The Force Awakens" and said something along the lines of, "Boy, he sure seems like the next Denzel Washington?" without knocking on wood first? Because that monkey's paw has started to curl something fierce and left us with the latest batch of franchise IP news -- one that'll excite the more innocent among us while leaving the rest slightly jaded and cynical. What a time to be alive, folks.
So, remember when the Hughes brothers teamed up with "Rogue One" writer Gary Whitta on a 2010 apocalyptic movie by the name of "The Book of Eli" and we all agreed that it was a pretty solid piece of original genre work with something meaningful on its mind? That might feel like more and more of a foreign concept these days, especially compared to the current state of original sci-fi.

When writing fiction of any sort, one thing to keep in mind is that most audiences really love dogs. A guy can murder multiple people, and viewers will have an easier time forgiving him for it than if he'd harmed a dog in any way. There's a reason why John Wick can keep the audience on his side after having a murder count in the triple digits; someone killed his dog once, so now we'll follow him to the end of the Earth. If he meets another character with a dog they love, no matter how antagonistic they may initially seem towards Wick, we know he'll form a trustworthy bond with them.
Even if the dog isn't intentionally killed, some viewers still refuse to watch any film that treats its dogs poorly. That's why the "Does the Dog Die?" website is still so popular — the death of a dog (Aka...

Lana Del Rey and Tyler the Creator are among the acts set to headline Coachella in 2024, according to a report from music industry trade HitsDailyDouble.
HitsDailyDouble further reports that Doja Cat and Peso Pluma are also in talks to perform at the festival, while Dua Lipa passed on a headlining slot due to timing issues.
The Rolling Stones, Olivia Rodrigo, and Travis Scott have also been in “talks” with the festival, but it’s unclear if any of those acts will end up on the lineup. Meanwhile, Shakira reportedly expressed interest to Coachella about a headlining performance, but the festival “ultimately passed on her—the reasons for which have engendered much speculation,” HitsDailyDouble claims.

Gareth Edwards’ The Creator is landing on Disney+ in the middle of January, it’s now been confirmed: more here.
Gareth Edward’s The Creator may not have won universal praise, but those who loved it, really, really loved it. Our own Ryan Lambie included. The film didn’t set the box office alight, sadly, although a $104m return isn’t going to cause Disney too many headaches. Sadly though, it was the kind of money that looks like it influenced the decision to sell on Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders. Sigh.
Anyway, The Creator.
We’ve already covered the fact that Disney is giving the movie a full physical media outing, and that’s going to be heading our way in the UK on January 15th 2024. You can find more details on the release here.

Following the arrival of Godzilla Minus One in theaters, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli‘s latest masterstroke, The Boy and the Heron, is already flying high at the December box office! Analysts say The Boy and the Heron could soar to the number one spot this weekend after earning $2.39M in Thursday previews, with a chance to collect $10M+ over the next few days.
This trend is an excellent look for films stomping out of Japan and into domestic theaters. Godzilla Minus One roared last weekend with $2.1M in previews before going nuclear with $4.7M on Friday and a 3-day total of $11.4M across 2,308 theaters. Meanwhile, The Boy and the Heron opened on 1,774 screens across the United States and Canada, expanding to 2,205 markets this weekend.

Sunday Am Final: Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie is lapping up $23M, a big win for Paramount and Spin Master, as the picture is part of a $14 billion global retail franchise which both companies get a nice cut from. And successful movies drive toy sales. It was part of Brian Robbins’ plan when he took over the top job at Paramount Pictures Studios to have family brands work at the box office, which also have a rainfall of cash in merchandise, particularly in an entertainment conglomerate that counts the powerful, and evergreen Nickelodeon brand. EntTelligence says Paw Patrol 2 drew 2.3M admissions, with close to half of the pic’s tickets being sold at child pricing.

Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi epic “The Creator” opens this week.
It’s his first feature film since 2016’s “Rogue One” and his fourth sci-fi film in a row, following 2010’s “Monsters,” and 2014’s “Godzilla.”
While he previously described “Godzilla” as “a disaster movie meets science fiction” and “Rogue One” as a “war movie meets science fiction,” Edwards tells TheWrap that “The Creator” is really a “father-child love story.”
Edwards also served as a writer along with Chris Weitz for the original film. Here’s how to watch “The Creator.”
When does “The Creator” come out?
“The Creator” had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on Sept. 26.
The film will be released wide on Sept. 29.
Is “The Creator” in theaters or streaming?

Gareth Edwards entered the film scene with "Monsters," a fantastic sci-fi movie that used its limited budget to tell a thrilling, suspenseful story. After that, however, Edwards went the route of many an indie director in the 2010s and was tapped to direct two huge blockbuster franchises, "Godzilla" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." While both had their merits ("Rogue One" even has some of the best moments in all of "Star Wars"), there is definitely something refreshing and exciting about Edwards finally overcoming his blockbuster fatigue and going back to his roots with "The Creator," a visually stunning piece of science fiction with big ideas and big performances.
In some ways, this is Gareth Edwards doing his version of "Star Wars: A New Hope" — a story of rebellion complete with a magical child, an evil battle station with a weapon that can completely obliterate planets, and a band...

This month’s San Diego Comic-Con is shaping up to be more low-key, at least in terms of reveals from Hollywood studios. On Tuesday, Billboard published a piece speculating on why hip-hop hasn’t had a Number One album or single within the first half of 2023. The report set off a flurry of chatter from industry observers and rap fans drawing their own conclusions as to what the answer might be. Is the dearth of rap hits this year a matter of market share, artist deaths, incarceration, or stagnant charts?
Most people who think the occurrence is no big deal are chalking it up to a lack of releases by major rap stars.

The show’s end isn’t exactly imminent, with Season Seven set to air this year, and Season Eight premiering in 2024. The stories in the final seasons will dovetail a bit with Big Mouth spin-off, Human Resources, which will end after its upcoming second season.
