Stormy Daniels took the stand at Donald Trump’s ongoing criminal hush-money trial on Tuesday, and even the former president seemed caught off guard by the news.
Trump posted — then quickly deleted — a furious rant about the prosecution’s plan to call Daniels shortly before The Associated Press reported on it ahead of Tuesday’s proceedings.
“I have just recently been told who the witness is today. This is unprecedented, no time for lawyers to prepare,” the former president wrote. “No Judge has ever run a trial in such a biased and partisan way.

Donald Trump once again refused to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 election, and hinted that he was prepared to “fight” if the outcome isn’t “honest.”
“If everything’s honest, I’d gladly accept the results,” Trump told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in a Wednesday interview when asked if he would accept Wisconsin’s election results. “If it’s not, you have to fight for the right of the country.”

Republicans are up in arms about students demonstrating against the war in Gaza on university campuses across the nation. The epicenter for the now weekslong protest movement is Columbia University, where on Tuesday students occupied Hamilton Hall before the NYPD forcibly removed and arrested them. J.D. Vance, the Donald Trump-loving Republican senator from Ohio, on Wednesday night told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that the students who took control of the campus building should face legal consequences.

On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump needed to be woken up by his lawyer, Todd Blanche, after he fell asleep during his New York hush money trial for the fourth time since the trial proceedings started.
“Trump is struggling to stay awake,” Susanne Craig, a reporter for The New York Times, wrote regarding Trump’s behavior during the trial. “His eyes were closed for a short period. He was jolted awake when Todd Blanche, his lawyer, nudged him while sliding a note in front of him.”
MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin reported that the former president’s lawyers are using tricks to keep him awake.
“I guess they have tried a number of different devices,” Rubin said. “Yeah, sleeping for a lot of it. I would say they’ve tried a number of different devices to keep Trump awake. Partially in response, or what appears to be in response to collective press corps observations.

Poppy Harlow is exiting CNN after a morning show failure and sixteen years with the network. She had experienced a shakeup in 2022 and things just continued to go downhill. Now, she has made the decision to leave. Keep reading for all of the details.
Poppy Harlow Exiting CNN After Morning Show Failure
After sixteen years with CNN, Poppy Harlow is leaving and a lot has to do with a big shakeup that occurred in 2022. She had spent over five years co-hosting CNN Newsroom with Jim Sciutto and they made a great duo. Then, she was moved to an early morning slot alongside Don Lemon and Kaitlan Collins for CNN This Morning. Lemon had come from anchoring his own primetime show whereas Collins was a correspondent. Unfortunately, the match did not light and Lemon was starting to get into trouble. He then made an inappropriate comment about former presidential candidate, Nikki Haley.

CNN veteran Poppy Harlow has announced her exit from the cable news network.
“When I walked in the door at CNN in 2008, I was 25 years old and had never been on live TV. Green is an understatement!” Harlow said in a memo obtained by Vanity Fair. “This place has shaped me as a leader, taught me resilience, shown me the value of perspective and how to make hard decisions…. It is for those reasons that I take this leap and leave CNN with a full heart and deep gratitude.”

Poppy Harlow and CNN are parting ways after the news outlet put the veteran correspondent through a whirlwind era as one of the co-anchors of an ill-conceived morning program that was ultimately scrapped.
CNN executives “have been wonderful and have given me the space to make this decision,” Harlow said in a memo to colleagues Friday. “I am very grateful to them.”
The decision to leave was Harlow’s, according to people familiar with the matter. CNN executives had come up with a handful of ideas for a new role following the network’s decision to cancel the A.M. program she had been anchoring, most recently with Phil Mattingly. Mattingly has since been named a national correspondent. Harlow felt she wanted to take a break and survey other options that might be available to her, according to one of the people familiar with the situation.
She could probably use some time off.

Poppy Harlow, who has been with CNN since 2008, is departing the network. Harlow announced her decision in a memo to colleagues.
She was offered a new role following the cancellation of CNN This Morning, but instead decided to leave, the network confirmed.
Harlow was co-host, along with Don Lemon and Kaitlan Collins, of CNN’s rebranded morning show, CNN This Morning, when it launched in November, 2022.
Lemon was ousted from the network the following April, and Collins left for her primetime show the following June. Phil Mattingly joined as co-host, but the show itself was dropped earlier this year in a retool of the network morning schedule. There still is a CNN This Morning with anchor Kasie Hunt, but it has an earlier start time of 5 a.m.

During jury selection for Donald Trump’s New York hush money trial, Judge Juan Merchan accused the former president of “intimidating” a juror after he made a gesture and muttered at him.
Merchan asked Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, to “speak to him” about his behavior.
“Your client was audibly uttering something. He was gesturing and muttering in the direction [of the juror],” the judge said to Blanche.
“I will not tolerate that,” Judge Merchan added, raising his voice. “I will not have any jurors intimidated in this courtroom. Take a minute and speak to your client about it!”
On day two of jury selection, the former president and his lawyers had a potential juror dismissed over a Facebook post he wrote about Trump in 2017.
“Get him out and lock him up,” the man wrote.

Former President Donald Trump seemed to fall asleep a few times during his court appearance on the first day of his hush money trial in Manhattan.
“Trump has apparently jolted back awake, noticing the notes his lawyer passed him several minutes ago,” Maggie Haberman, a reporter for The New York Times, wrote in the paper.
Haberman later said that Trump glared at her in the courtroom after she reported he had fallen asleep during the trial.
“After the thirty-some jurors remaining file out of the room for a brief afternoon break, Trump rises,” the Law360 reporter Frank Runyeon mentioned in the press pool report. “After the jurors leave the courtroom, he stares over at Da Alvin Bragg. Then Trump turns his eyes to the press pool.”
“As he exits, he glares at New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman for several seconds as he walks out,” Runyeon wrote.

Donald Trump has been ranting incessantly over his inability to pay his $464 million bond following a New York judge ruling he must pay the state hundreds of millions for fraud. The deadline to pay the bond is Monday, and after the former president fails to do so, state Attorney General Letitia James will be cleared to start seizing his assets. She’s already started preparing to so.

In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

In a speech on Tuesday night by Donald Trump in Texas, CNN decided to interrupt their live coverage to cite multiple false statements Trump made that needed to be corrected.
CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins pointed out Trump’s misrepresentation of his own actions on border security while he was in office, and highlighted the need for accuracy. In conversation with CNN’s fact-checker Daniel Dale, Collins highlighted several lies in Trump’s speech.
One such falsehood was Trump’s claim that people from jails and mental institutions were being released and transported across the border. Collins noted that despite the lack of evidence provided by the Trump campaign, he continues to repeat this falsehood. Dale also debunked Trump’s assertion that many border crossers speak unknown languages and stated the claim to be a fabrication with no basis in reality.

CNN has paid Don Lemon $24.5 million in order to settle his separation deal nearly 10 months after he was fired for his sexist remarks about Nikki Haley.
The comments that Lemon made on CNN This Morning on February 16 enraged his co-anchors, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins, who then went into the bathroom. This controversy started with a proposal Haley made during her presidential announcement speech about instituting a mental competency test for politicians who are over 75 years old.

The FBI failed to investigate a secret room and closet in Donald Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago resort when searching for sensitive documents, according to several witnesses.
Trump’s resort was raided by federal officers on August 8, 2022, when they executed a search warrant. They then searched the premises for any potentially classified material and they found 11,000 documents and took away at least 100 classified documents.
However, a team working for Special Counsel Jack Smith has since spoken to several witnesses claiming that a locked cabinet and a secret room had not been examined during the raid.

Former President Donald Trump demanded that CNN and Mnbc should have their television licenses revoked after they refused to air his victory speech after the Iowa caucuses on live television.
“MSNBC and CNN refused to air my victory speech,” Trump stated in a speech he made in New Hampshire. “I think of it because they are crooked, they’re dishonest, and frankly, they should have their licenses – or whatever they have – taken away.”
“They put on Nikki Haley,” he added. “She came in third, a distant third, like I mean, a distant third.”
“And they put on Ron DeSanctimonious who came in a boring second,” Trump went on to say. “Now he, we don’t talk about him too much because over here, he’s polling at 4%. So we’ll save him where he seems to go up. But we haven’t found that place yet, he’s gone down a lot.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Don Lemon appears to have a sweet new deal with social-media giant X.
The former CNN anchor, who parted ways with the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet last year after he was moved to duties on its morning program, said Tuesday that he had launched a new media company and would be debuting a new program via X.
The new program, “The Don Lemon Show,” will allow him to be “bigger, bolder, freer,” Lemon said in a posting. The show “will be available to everyone, easily, whenever and wherever you want it, streaming on the platforms where conversations are happening. And you’ll find it first on X, the biggest space for free speech in the world. I know now more than ever that we need a place for honest debate and discussion without the hall monitors. Jon Rosen, a longtime WME agent and executive who has represented some of TV’s best known news anchors and celebrity chefs, is leaving the Endeavor-owned agency to launch his own management firm, according to three people familiar with the matter.
Rosen, who represents NBC News’ Stephanie Ruhle, Willie Geist and Hallie Jackson as well as CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, is set to manage many of his current clients, according to one of these people, and they are expected to retain WME as an agency. A WME spokesperson did not respond immediately to a query seeking comment and Rosen could not be reached immediately for comment via a call Wednesday.
His exit comes as WME parent Endeavor has come under new scrutiny on Wall Street. The company, which recently helped create the combat-sports company Tko, suggested in October that it might consider going private.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said in an interview that she has faced threats since issuing her decision to remove Donald Trump from the state’s primary ballot on Thursday.

Special Counsel Jack Smith took Donald Trump’s claims of presidential immunity straight to the Supreme Court on Monday. Smith’s office had petitioned the court to rule on Trump’s central defense against charges of election interference: that his former status as president make him immune to criminal charges related to his attempt to subvert the 2020 election.
In response, the ex-president’s camp issued a statement decrying Smith’s attempt to appeal to the very court Trump helped appointment. A Trump spokesperson accused the special counsel of attempting to...

Updated: Fox News’ Ron DeSantis-Gavin Newsom debate drew 5.46 million million viewers — 4.75 million in its live telecast and 706,000 for a rebroadcast — giving a ratings bump to Sean Hannity in the time slot.
The Thursday 90-minute debate — billed as a Red State vs. Blue State showdown — easily beat the competition on MSNBC and CNN.
Fox News also won the night, averaging 3.87 million viewers, compared to 1.34 million for MSNBC and 513,000 for CNN.
For comparison, the most recent Republican primary debate drew 7.51 million viewers across NBC, streaming and digital. The Fox News event was organized by Hannity, and instead focused on comparisons between California and Florida on major issues like crime, immigration and education.
In the 9 p.m. Et time slot, MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Tonight averaged 1.2 million viewers and CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins garnered 515,000. In the 25-54 demo, the Fox News debate drew 742,000, compared to 123,000 for MSNBC and 103,000 for CNN.

The reign of King Charles — the CNN show, not the British monarch — began rather quietly Wednesday.
The weekly show, hosted by Gayle King and Charles Barkley, drew just 501,00 viewers for its debut, according to same-day Nielsen ratings (it adjusted up a little from 486,000 in fast nationals). It finished a distant third among the biggest cable news channels in total viewers and didn’t really moving the needle from CNN’s recent averages in the hour. In fact, it ranks as the smallest audience of any of CNN’s primetime debuts this year.
King Charles was one of the last big moves of the brief Chris Licht era at CNN. The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network announced the show in late April — six weeks before Licht was let go following a profile in The Atlantic that was poorly received among network staffers. (Mark Thompson became CEO of CNN in October.)

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis squaring off against California Governor Gavin Newsom in a debate moderated by Sean Hannity? Sounds like an opportunity for another round of cable-news professional wrestling.
The host hopes to keep the figure-four leg locks and piledrivers to a minimum.
“It’s not going to be PBS. I don’t want it to be PBS. PBS bores me,” Hannity says during a recent conversation in his office at Fox News Channel’s New York headquarters. Still, he adds, “if they want to have a food fight, you know what? Been there, done that. No thanks. It’s a format that I think is stale and doesn’t work. It’s predictable. For me, I’m much more interested in ‘Why do you believe that? ‘Explain this to me.’ ‘How do you not see this part of it?’ Trying to elicit answers, smart answers from people.”

CNN Max is attracting users who are “20 years younger” than traditional TV viewers, according to Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
In a commentary provided for investors following Wbd’s third-quarter results announcement Wednesday, Zaslav said his team had been “analyzing everything” to do with the new streaming service since its launch in October. The evidence was as expected before launch: It is attracting much younger viewers who don’t subscribe to cable to its suite of live news and analysis programs and original shows.
Wbd will “continue to iterate and improve the offer,” added Zaslav. “But the key takeaway here is we saw an opportunity and were able to pivot quickly, seamlessly and decisively and by providing CNN Max as a service we’re expanding our audience and our impact. The fact is what CNN does has never been more important or impact and no one does it better.

Updated, 12:30 Pm: Donald Trump wrapped up his testimony in his New York civil fraud trial after a contentious day that, absent camera coverage, played into his campaign message that he’s the one under attack.
“In one respect, Trump’s strategy is successful,” Neal Katyal, the legal commentator and former acting solicitor general, wrote on X/Twitter. “Everyone is talking about his temper tantrums, instead of talking about his commissions of fraud and that he is a cheat. He’s already lost the merits of the case, so this is his best play.”
Trump has denied allegations that he fraudulently inflated the value of his assets for the purposes of securing more favorable loan terms.
But throughout the day, Trump went on several rants against the prosecution and the judge, calling the whole trial “fraudulent.”
In his afternoon testimony, Trump insisted that he was “worth billions of dollars more than the financial statements,...

At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.
Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”
The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.
“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

The contentious relationship between pay-tv providers and media companies isn’t getting any better as the evolution from traditional linear viewing to streaming accelerates. On the heels of multiple carriage and retransmission disagreements, the latest dispute is of a different breed. When Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it would be bringing CNN branded news programming to its flagship streaming service Max, it raised a lot of the questions that onlookers had with the ill-fated CNN+ in 2022. Namely, how do you bring the live news coverage that viewers expect from the CNN brand without infringing on the carriage agreements that you have with cable, satellite, and live TV streaming services?

CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.
The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

NBC News may trump its rivals when it comes to interviewing a certain former Commander-in-Chief.
David Muir, Lesley Stahl, John Dickerson, Chris Wallace, Bill O’Reilly, Kaitlan Collins and Jim Acosta have all tried their hand at interviewing Donald Trump; lobbing questions at him; or moderating a debate or event in which his participation was key. Some have drawn blood and others have been bloodied (and some others left agog as Trump walked out unexpectedly). But anchors and reporters working for NBC News seem to have the most success at keeping him in line while trying to elicit big news out of him.
Kristen Welker has the next turn at bat. She has pre-taped an interview with Trump that is one of the main features of her first broadcast at the helm of NBC News’ “Meet The Press.” The NBCUniversal-backed outlet has already revealed that Trump told her he was...

MSNBC host and former White House press secretary Jen Psaki is going to primetime.

Hayes will continue to host his show on Tuesday through Friday nights. Psaki will also continue to host Inside on Sundays at noon, and write her MSNBC political column.
MSNBC noted that, for the past year, All In has had a rotating slate of guest hosts on Monday nights as Hayes has worked on his podcast, an upcoming book, and live events. He will continue to expand his portfolio of content for the company. Psaki, it should be noted, was a frequent guest host for Hayes on Monday nights.

After Chris Licht was ousted as CEO of CNN after barely a year on the job, his tumultuous tenure left staff exhausted and demoralized. Primetime anchor Anderson Cooper opened up about Licht’s era at the network, including the ex-chairman’s widely maligned decision to host a town hall event with Donald Trump last spring, during an interview with the New York Times Magazine published Tuesday.
When asked if he agreed with Licht’s attempt to realign CNN to appeal to a new “cohort of viewers,” Cooper said, “I don...

Updated with latest: CNN and MSNBC skipped Donald Trump’s brief remarks on the Atlanta airport tarmac Thursday following his arrest, citing his past falsehoods about the 2020 presidential election.
Fox News did carry the statement, his first since he was arrested, booked and released at Fulton County Jail. NewsNation also carried his remarks.
CNN briefly went to the tarmac but then cut away. Anderson Cooper later said, “He continued to make dishonest claims about the election. We are not going to play it. It’s not worth hearing. You’ve heard them all before. Many of the claims just not true. He’s now back on the plane ready to take off.”
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow told viewers that “we are not going to take those remarks live but we will cover them for their newsworthiness. As we have said in the past, there is a cost to us as...

CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

CNN anchor Laura Coates has moved to CAA for representation, a move that could signal a new era of influence for the talent-agency giant at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet.
In a broad overhaul of CNN’s schedule, Coates was recently named to anchor a new 11 p.m. hour at CNN, “Laura Coates Live,” where she will follow Abby Philip, who will hold forth at 10. CAA also represents Erin Burnett, who anchors CNN’s 7 p.m. hour. All told, CAA will represent two of five of the anchors who appear during CNN’s schedule between 7 p.m. to midnight., which usually represent some of the network’s most-watched hours.
In years past, CNN’s primetime was dominated by rival agency UTA, which continues to have a strong roster at CNN. The agency represents Philip — who left CNN for UTA — as well as Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, Don Lemon and Alisyn Camerota.

It was clearly too good to be true. Days after announcing a press conference during which he promised to present irrefutable proof that the 2020 election was rigged against him, Donald Trump has canceled the big reveal.
Earlier on Thursday, ABC News reported that sources close to the president had advised him that holding the news conference, originally scheduled for Monday, could provide fodder for prosecutors overseeing the various legal cases against him, and suggested he cancel the event.
It seems he, for once, took their advice to heart.
