Moscow’s Hype Film, whose credits include Mona Fastvold’s Venice Competition contender The World To Come and Kirill Serebrennikov’s buzzy Petrov’s Flu (sold by Charades), is lining up a project exploring the lives of contemporary Russians with disabilities.
The Carpenter is to be directed by Avdotya (Dunya) Smirnova, whose previous filmmaker credits include Two Days (2011) starring Fedor Bondarchuk, and Andrei Konchalovsky’s 2007 comedy drama Gloss, which she co-wrote.
Smirnova’s drama will look at the experiences of parents who make huge sacrifices to give their disabled child a comfortable life.

Revered French director Claire Denis is to lead the short films and Cinéfondation (student films) jury at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
Denis and her jury will award the three prizes of the Cinéfondation selected from 17 film students’ works as well as the Short Film Palme d’Or. Previous jury heads for this section include Abderrahmane Sissako, Naomi Kawase, Cristian Mungiu and Bertrand Bonello.
Last year, the jury chaired by Bonello awarded the Short Film Palme d’Or to All These Creatures, by Charles Williams. Filmmakers to start out in the Cannes short film strand include Lynne Ramsay, Xavier Giannoli, Alice Winocour, Pascale Ferran, João Salaviza, Jim Jarmusch, Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Jane Campion (who remains the only director to have received both the Short Film Palme d’Or and the Palme d’Or for a feature).

The Les Arcs Film Festival, celebrating its 10th year in 2018, has unveiled its selection of co-production projects for this year’s Industry Village.
Running December 15-18, the event is a financing platform for feature films in development across Europe.
This year, 20 projects have been selected, including a new film from Carla Simon, whose Summer 93 won best first feature at this year’s Berlinale. Her new project Each Of Us is being co-directed with Anne Zohra Berrached and Meritxell Colell and produced by Spain’s Alhena Production.
