It was recently announced that New Line Cinema has picked up the rights to a horror script that was written by up and coming writer Mike Van Waes. The setting for the film will take place in Oz from The Wizard of Oz.
THR got the exclusive scoop on this project and this is what they had to say:
The project, which is in the early development stages, will have ties to the universe created in the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum that was adapted into the classic 1939 film starring Judy Garland.Baum's story — about a young girl and her dog who are swept away to a magical world where she teams up with the Lion, the Tinman and the Scarecrow to face off against the Wicked Witch of the West — has been adapted numerous times over the years and also used as inspiration for various film,...

An original horror film set in the world of “The Wizard of Oz” is in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema has picked up the pitch from writer Mike Van Waes. While the film will have ties to L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” it will not be a new adaptation of the classic story. It will be an original horror tale that is set within the magical Land of Oz.

There seems to have been quite the resurgence in interest in L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz in recent years – ever since Oz The Great And Powerful arrived in theatres in 2013. We saw the 2014 release of the animated movie Legends Of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, NBC’s 2015 broadcast of The Wiz Live!, the recent premiere of the TV series Emerald City, and the development of an animated series at Warner Bros titled Dorothy Of Oz. New Line Cinema even has an L. Frank Baum biopic in the works, titled Road To Oz. But, it’s the studio’s additional acquisition of an original film pitch that’s making the news today, bringing horror to the world of Oz.
The pitch was made by emerging screenwriter Mike Van Waes, who already has projects in development with other studios. His script Hammerspace made the 2015 Black List, with its...

When MGM undertook to produce a film adaptation of the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1938 they wanted to use all the newest technological tools — think Technicolor — and special effects wizardry that they possibly could to bring the fantastic story to life. Equally, when the Builders Association decided to make the film the subject of their latest play last year — Elements of Oz ran Off-Broadway throughout December — they did the exact same thing. But for an innovative theater company in 2016 that meant integrating live video production, online clips, and a multitasking phone app into the onstage proceedings. New media […]...

Nipping at the heels of last week’s trailer reveal, NBC has now debuted the very first promo for Emerald City, one which reimagines a classic in rather spectacular fashion.
It’s a classic yarn that can be traced all the way back to L. Frank Baum’s original novel series, which began life with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900. Back then, Baum’s spellbinding work remained the best-selling children’s book for two years straight, and through time various directors and storytellers have tapped into that legacy, resulting in the likes of Sam Raimi’s lavish prequel Oz the Great and Powerful and 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, arguably the most well-known adaptation of the lot.
Now, it’s almost time for Emerald City to join that bracket. Hailing from showrunner David Schulner (Do No Harm), there was a time early on in development where it looked certain...

The series “Emerald City” follows an older version of Dorothy Gale, played by Adria Arjona (“True Detective”), who’s transported by tornado with a K9 police dog into Oz, a land of competing realms, magic and bloodshed. Wicked will finally be on the big screen, 16 years after opening on Broadway. The movie musical adaptation of Elphaba’s story will be our Christmas gift when Universal Studios’ Wicked musical hits theaters on December 20, 2019. The studio revealed the film’s release date today. Producer Marc Platt (Into the Woods, Wanted) had previously said a 2016 release date was a “loose goal.” Platt and Universal (the company’s Stage Productions arm) were also behind the hit Broadway show retelling the story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Since opening in 2003, it’s become the 10th longest-running Broadway show and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, winning three. Stephen Daldry, known both for his Oscar-winning (The Hours) and Tony-winning (Billy Elliot) work, is set to direct the film. No word on casting yet. Also no word on whether we’ll ever see a non-musical screen adaptation more directly adapted from Gregory Maguire’s Wicked novel. Salma Hayek was previously developing a mini-series based on the 1995 book.

Today in 1903, The Wizard of Oz opened at the Majestic Theatre, where it ran for 293 performances. Based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, which was originally published in 1900, much of the original music was by Paul Tietjens and has been mostly forgotten, although it was still well-remembered and in discussion at MGM in the late 1930s, when the classic film version of the story was made. The main plot of the show, as recounted in newspapers of the time, is Pastoria's attempts to regain the throne from the Wizard of Oz. The original protagonists' search for the Wizard puts them on the wrong side of the law. Since then, many new incarnations have been created, including the 1939 film, and the 2011 West End musical.

Mere minutes into NBC’s broadcast of The Wiz Live! you could feel the Internet – or at least its nicer corners – breathe a huge sigh of relief. The network’s previous attempts at creating a classic for a new generation with The Sound of Music Live! and Peter Pan Live! resulted mostly in deflated fodder for live-tweeters hoping to get their fifteen minutes. Against all odds, The Wiz Live! managed to shake the Hate-Watch label and put on a legitimately entertaining show. Thanks to solid casting, spotless performances, and a strong choice of source material, NBC finally found a way to make appointment television satisfying for families and musical theatre fans alike.
Based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wiz eased on to the Broadway stage in 1975 as a soulful retelling that featured an all-black cast and a score with roots in pop and R&B.

It's difficult to think of a film that has inspired more urban legends than Victor Fleming's 1939 children's classic The Wizard of Oz. Depending on who you believe, Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon syncs perfectly with the action (not true), the production was cursed with a series of horrendous accidents (true), and the Munchkins were all shag-happy party animals (also untrue, but a favourite talk show gag of star Judy Garland). Perhaps the tall tales have something to do with the hellish shoot, which involved five directors and at least 15 writers, or maybe it's because The Wizard of Oz is watched by a lot of stoned people.
What many don't seem to realise is that The Wizard Of Oz is itself a remake. L Frank Baum's original 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (the first in a series of more than a dozen books) was filmed...

Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return is the eighteenth film set in Oz. Or the seventeenth, if you discount 1978’s The Wiz, which doesn’t exactly take place there, but rather in a fantastical Oz-fitted New York City. Or maybe Dorothy’s Return is actually the nineteenth, if you count the 1921 silent film adaptation which never actually made it to movie screens.
The point is, over the last century, filmmakers have been drawn back to L. Frank Baum’s magical source novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; there’s something fundamentally cinematic about Dorothy, Toto and her colourful troupe of friends skipping down a yellow brick road to an emerald-green city. Here’s a brief look at the most successful big-screen adaptations – and a few of the very worst.

Chicago – The so-called “legend of Oz” will cease to be legendary if they keep producing lame re-engineerings of the 1939 classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Close on the heels of last year’s dud, “Oz the Great and Powerful,” comes the dully rendered “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The screenplay – by Adam Balsam and Randi Barnes – is strictly boilerplate, with no consideration for creating something different for the Dorothy and Oz story, just an odd updating of the Kansas atmosphere and a rather depressing disaster area in the town after the first tornado. The voice casting of TV actress Lea Michele (“Glee”) as Dorothy is a sure sign of a way to lower the budget, and although some of the elements are interesting (the voice of Patrick Stewart as a talking piece of wood), overall the film will work as a glazed-eye babysitter for the kids, while adults...

Updated: NBC has given a 10-episode order to Emerald City, an Oz-themed drama from Siberia creator/showrunner Matthew Arnold. The order comes after the project recently underwent a rewrite by Josh Friedman. The two will executive produce through Universal Television where Friedman is under a deal. A writers room is slated to get up and running soon but casting may be postponed until after pilot season. Emerald City is described as a modern and dark reimagining of the classic tale of Oz in the vein of Game Of Thrones, drawing upon stories from Baum’s original 14 books that include lethal warriors, competing kingdoms, and the infamous wizard as we’ve never seen him before. A head-strong 20-year-old Dorothy Gale is unwittingly sent on an eye-opening journey that thrusts her into the center of an epic and bloody battle for the control of Oz. Following the success of the 1900 The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz,...

Review Kylie Peters 16 Dec 2013 - 07:29
Once reaches its mid-season finale, which is an emotional ride for some. Here's Kylie's review...
This review contains spoilers.
3.11 Going Home
“And what do you think fairytales are? They are a reminder that things will get better if we just hold on to hope.”
The winter finale of Once season three rolls onto the scene like Regina on a rampage: relentless, single-minded, and ready to crush some hearts into dust. The angst-filled offering brings the Neverland arc to a close and, after a long wrap-up scene, teases us with a few minutes of next spring’s new story arc.
Pan, still in Henry’s body, takes Felix’s heart and crushes it as the final ingredient for his curse on Storybrooke. Using a convenient magic artifact called the wand of the Black Fairy, Rumple returns Pan and Henry to their proper bodies. This means...

Supernatural, Season 9, Episode 4: “Slumber Party”
Written by Robbie Thompson
Directed by Robert Singer
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on The CW
The unexpected appearance of Henry Winchester last season came with two things; the introduction of Abaddon, and the first mention of the Men of Letters, a secret society for those studying supernatural entities. The latter laid the groundwork for a potentially fascinating mythology, one that has yet to be fully revealed, despite the discovery of the society’s central command. This week’s episode focuses on the history of the Men of Letters once again, in a superb outing that manages to display an old classic from a unique perspective, while bringing back a beloved character.
Watching Charlie dive further into the world of hunting is a great step, both for the show as a whole, and for the character in particular.

The Wizard of Oz is a film that needs no introduction (certainly not since the 70th Anniversary Edition), but the latest release is one that actually gives you a lot to talk about, mainly by way of the 3D aspect.
The hype was pretty impressive for the 3D release of the film in theaters, and if you have a 3D home option, this is probably a key film despite the lack of massive effects, but if you’re in the market at all, you also probably have a copy of this.
Of course, there is some additional bonus content (unless you’re getting the massive Collector’s Edition, and then you’re all set… reviews are unnecessary for you), and it’s actually very cool, but the majority of the special features are on that competing Blu-Ray you already own.
So, there are three big questions for the new Wizard of Oz Blu-Ray 3D.

Chicago – What more could possibly be said about “The Wizard of Oz,” arguably the most beloved film of all time? (It’s probably this or “It’s a Wonderful Life.”) In one of 2013’s most surprising critical hits, “Oz” actually became relevant again in terms of technology, and I’m not talking about Sam Raimi’s mostly-awful “Oz: The Great and Powerful.” There seems to now be an answer to the question, “Has there ever been a good 3D remastering of a classic film?” Decide for yourself on 3D Blu-ray.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
It makes perfect sense that “Oz” would get a 3D treatment given the wonder inherent in the film’s journey from Kansas to Oz. Why just go color when you can go 3D? Warner Bros. includes over 2 hours of extras on their newest “Oz” Blu-ray release, the most interesting of which will be “The Making of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,...

So it’s a bit early, but if any motion picture deserves a year-long celebration it’s this one. This weekend, film goers are getting a true treat. The 1939 (August to be exact) classic The Wizard Of Oz is back on Imax screens and in 3D for the very first time. Sure most of you have seen it on cable TV or on home video, but an opportunity to see this gem on the big screen should not be passed up. I mean this is a film that has become a huge part of our culture . The movie itself is legendary as are the stories about its making. There’s even a feature film comedy (Under The Rainbow) that’s set backstage (but I wouldn’t consider that Chevy Chase flick a classic).
Since I’m sure you’re familiar with the plot, lets’ talk about some of the backstage stories.

Let's travel back in time to 1910, when the skirts were longer, the hats bigger and the films way silent-er. Behold, 17 reasons 1910 was a golden year for culture.
1.) A 16-minute film adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" is released.
2.) Mardi Gras looked especially creepy.
3.) Igor Stravinsky's ballet "The Firebird" premieres in Paris.
4.) Silent fantasy film "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" brings black-and-white ruby slippers to the screen.
5.) Egon Schiele paints a kneeling nude self-portrait aptly titled "Kneeling nude self-portrait."
.
6.) Garment workers go on strike in New York City.
7.) Mark Twain passed away at 74 years old. In his biography he wrote: "I came in with Halley's comet in 1835. It's coming again next year (1910), and I expect to go out with it. The Almighty has said no doubt, 'Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together.'"
8.) Russian lit giant Leo Tolstoy died at 82 years old.

The producers who brought Sherlock Holmes to New York for CBS, are doing the same with some other classic literary characters. CBS has put in development Dorothy, a drama project from Elementary executive producers Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman. The project, from CBS TV Studios where Timberman/Beverly Prods. is based, is described as a medical soap based in New York City inspired by the characters and themes from The Wizard of Oz. Emily Fox (Ghost Whisperer) will write the script and executive produce with Beverly and Timberman. L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been pursued for screen adaptations and interpretations for decades now, including the 1939 feature classic which will soon mark its 75th anniversary. In addition to Dorothy, Syfy is currently developing Warriors Of Oz, a mini-series project from Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov that is described as a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story.
