Before entering its long winter break, ABC’s Once Upon a Time left viewers with a chilling, new truth about the Dark Curse that deposited Regina, Rumple and others in Hyperion Heights with new identities.

“We’re so close,” read a letter from Rick to his allies in Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead. “This can be our last fight.” But if it ain’t over till the fat lady sings, he was starting his victory lap a mite early, considering the fate that befell the “character” in question in “The King, the Widow, and Rick.” And not only was the fat lady headed for a mess of hurt, but two regulars wound up under lock and key — one of them in the buff — another trio was brazenly disobeying orders, and yet another character...

Errol Morris has been ahead of the curve ever since he broke out with pet cemetery documentary “Gates of Heaven” in 1978. A decade later, “The Thin Blue Line” wowed critics but alienated the hidebound documentary community with its use of “reenactments” and a rousing Philip Glass score. Decades before Netflix created “Making a Murderer,” “The Keepers,” and “Witness,” Morris’ film actually solved a murder mystery and freed an innocent Death Row convict in a Texas prison.
Since then, Glass became a go-to movie composer, earning three Oscar nominations — and could score a fourth for this year’s Oscar documentary frontrunner “Jane.” Reenactments have become standard issue for nonfiction films, filling the void between talking heads, archival footage, cinéma vérité observation, and what isn’t visually available. And Morris isn’t the only filmmaker who is a presence in his films, yelling at his subjects from behind his invention, the Interrotron.

Here’s an Army booster production that got way out of hand: it’s a semi-docu using real soldiers, and filmed in Korea near the real combat zones – and filmed in full-scale 3-D. The soldiers, the equipment, everything is real — even the ammunition used is live, not blanks.

It seems these days, when some world leaders seem to enjoy the thought of war, we need to be reminded just what it is. War is hell, there is no positive side, even for the winners. This is something that Shinya Tsukamoto shows in Fires on the Plain…
In the final states of World War 2, the occupying Japanese army are losing ground in the Philippines. Fighting against local resistance and the American Army a few of the soldiers try to make their escape, but all they find is a hostile territory where friendship means nothing and hope is none existent.
At the start of the film we are introduced to an unnamed soldier (Shinya Tsukamoto) who is suffering from TB. Given no hope, he finds himself wandering through a desolate but beautiful landscape.

There is a world that exists that is hard to fathom, which today, in our vastly connected digital age, where our social media feeds are inundated with photos from Syria and Venezuela, is itself hard to comprehend. In part, because we have all seen the imagery of war — shocking photos and footage are nearly commonplace and working to dull us into desensitization. And because we perceive war as a thing that ends, as a tragedy to be overcome, as something that is not simply a way of life.

On July 24, 1998, Steven Spielberg brought Saving Private Ryan to theaters, where the film would become a summer hit and go on to win five Oscars. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below:
War is hell. While Gen. Sherman may have said it first, Steven Spielberg makes one of the most convincing cases yet in the uncompromisingly powerful Saving Private Ryan.
A harrowing World War II epic about the struggle to uphold decency in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, the visual masterwork finds Spielberg atop his craft, weaving heart-pounding action and gut-wrenching emotion — often during the same sequence —...

Chicago – War is hell, even in “The Good War.” The early days of World War II were a desperate time for the British, and the events of “Dunkirk” were largely about loss, yet mostly about inspiration. Director Christopher Nolan gives his film a grand cinematic treatment, evoking an era that has mostly faded away.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film is presented like a symphony – in fact, there is an epic soundtrack pervasively scored through the entire movie (by James Newton Howard). The situation on that French beach in 1940 couldn’t have been worse for the early efforts of the Bef (British Expeditionary Force) versus the German army during the Battle of France. Their armies were trapped, with no way of getting to safe harbor, achingly close (40-80 nautical miles) to home across the English Channel. Enter the “small ships of Dunkirk,” a loose collection of pleasure crafts and fishing boats rounded up for the evacuation effort.

War is hell, as everyone knows. War movies, on the other hand, are another story — and with reviews for Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk beginning to emerge, it's looking as if this re-creation of the Dunkirk evacuation of 1940 has left critics near-unanimous about one simple fact: This movie is a masterpiece.
Don't just take my word for it. "Dunkirk is an impressionist masterpiece," writes The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy, who goes on to add that "Nolan has gotten everything just right" in the movie. McCarthy takes particular note of the contributions of cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, production designer Nathan...

Although we still have a few more months to go before Justice League storms cinemas, the film’s main villain, Steppenwolf, seems to be enjoying being in the spotlight as of late. First, movie studios were given yet another lesson that they should reveal what characters are to look like onscreen via officially released images, as opposed to toylines continuing their time-honored tradition of letting the cat out bag, when some pictures of Darkseid’s subordinate surfaced online.
In addition to that, actor Ciaran Hinds had some interesting things to say about the motion capture process when asked why he didn’t show up in costume in a recent appearance on The Michael Ball Show:
“I’m sorry I’m not in costume. I didn’t even have a costume when I was doing it. It’s all done in motion capture. So… they stick a helmet on your head,...

Stars: Niamh Hogan, Alan Talbot, Michael Parle, Sarah Tapes Jenkinson, Kevin O’Malley, Nic Furlong, Aisli Moran, Saorla Wright | Written by Tony Flynn, Zoe Kavanagh | Directed by Zoe Kavanagh
Lurking in the shadows of society, within the rich and powerful, is the true essence of evil. A young girl, Taryn Barker, descends into this dark underworld to search for her sister. But when the sister is raped and murdered, Taryn vows to take revenge. She survives a demonic possession that should have killed her during a satanic ritual, and is rescued by a team of demon hunters who train her to fight evil. Years later, Taryn is detained by police and questioned over the murder of a man who she believes to be a demon. As the bodies pile up, Police Detective Beckett is forced to seek Taryn’s aid in rescuing his daughter from a demonic cult. Running against the clock, Taryn must venture into the darkest depths of the city to save Beckett’s daughter and prevent a potential Hell on Earth.
A true independent horror movie, made completely outside the “system” by an Irish, first-time, female, filmmaker? That’s enough to peak anyone’s interest in Demon Hunter. But then add the fact that Zoe Kavanagh’s debut feature is a spin on the same arse-kicking, take-no-prisoners, give-no f**ks, strong-female character that made Buffy the Vampire Slayer must-see TV; and you have a film that should be on the radar of Every genre fan!
But can a truly independent film live up to such expectations? In a word. Yes.
Not confined by its obvious low-budget, Demon Hunter is – like all good indie genre cinema – a perfect storm of ideas, story, performances and filmmaking. And whilst budget may be lacking, the rest of the elements that make up Kavanagh’s film work to overcome any shortcomings: including a badass heavy metal soundtrack that really helps ramp up the excitement in the films numerous fight scenes; and a setting – the streets of Dublin – that haven’t really been explored in such rich detail previously.
In terms of story and plot, Demon Hunter packs a Lot into its swift runtime. The film manages to not only tell Taryn’s backstory, but also weave an intricate, and intimate, tale of the oldest of battles: that between good and evil. By making Taryn’s tale one of not only good vs. evil, but also of revenge and personal vengeance, Kavanagh manages to make what is essentially a small-scale production feel a part of a much larger story in an even larger universe. This really feels like only the beginning for our titular demon hunter…
Speaking of whom, our heroine Taryn is part Buffy, part Angel (with a dash of The Crow) and not only embodies everything that made those two characters great, but she’s a fiesty, fighting Irish lass too. With an inherent vulnerability – due to both her past and because of what Falstaff has put her through – that keeps the character grounded in reality when fighting demons is anything but real life. Taryn’s journey is fully mapped out here: from her schoolgirl beginnings to the rousing, and kick-ass, speech she gives at the end – this is her story, her fight, her film. And heres to seeing more!
Demon Hunter is out now from Left Films.

Having worked on a series of documentaries that took western audiences behind the scenes of the Afghanistan conflicts, particularly with the Oscar-nominated Restrepo, filmmaker Sebastien Junger has set his sights on a new frontline, this time offering an accessible and shocking breakdown of what’s occurring in Syria.
For some, the Syrian crisis is a complex issue that’s hard to find time or reason to understand. Whether it’s the origins of the war (which seems to have all started with nothing more than schoolyard graffiti), and how the Arab Spring immediately looked positive for the country only to lead to a living nightmare, or the practicalities of what’s currently occurring.

Murderous psychopaths roam the halls of the former psychiatric hospital as film-makers capture a close-knit community of ‘family like no other’
In a former psychiatric hospital, a 45-minute drive south of Auckland, lies New Zealand’s best and only haunted attraction theme park: Spookers. On its website it describes itself as a “live entertainment experience” in which “victims (you!)” move through a haunted house, forest, or cornfield to be scared by “live scare-actors”.
One customer, Tom B, called it “Hell on earth (in a good way)” in his glowing online review, which is almost word-for-word what you’d leave for a great restaurant: “This place was ridiculously good. I’ve never enjoyed being so terrified. All my friends came out raving about it. Would go back again in a heartbeat.”

When practical effects drive a film’s talking points, I pause. Gruesome monster designs and caved-in prosthetics merely supplement story, yet a film like Harbinger Down piles all its eggs into one blood-soaked basket. Fans yearn for realistic SFX, and filmmakers always aim to dethrone The Thing‘s bar-setting kingship. But at what cost? Take Astron-6’s The Void. Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski create Lovecraftian hellbeasts from synthetic molding, yet a cultist presence could have used more fleshing out. Bodies splatter, character structures crumble and visuals outweigh storytelling.

Kong: Skull Island marks the triumphant return of King Kong to the theater for the first time since 2005 when Peter Jackson thought it was a good idea for a giant ape to ice skate with a damsel in distress, much to the chagrin of critics and audiences everywhere. This Kong doesn’t have time for ice skating or long walks around New York City because he’s got to protect his home from underground lizard hybrids, birds that can saw a man in half and even humans who feel Kong would look good over their mantle.

After a lengthy wait, the final theatrical trailer for Logan - Hugh Jackman's final bow as the beloved Wolverine - has arrived and it was well worth the wait. The trailer starts out in a convenience store where Dafne Keen's mysterious Laura is seen picking up a few snacks and stuff for the road before she ends up in a confrontation with the store clerk. Luckily, Jackman's titular hero is able to diffuse the situation and takes her back with him to their hideout where we reunite with Patrick Stewart's weathered Professor X. We then meet the Reavers, led by Boyd Holbrook's Donald Pierce, who attempt to take Laura away, but they're in for a rude awakening when Laura X-23 strikes back. The rest of the trailer takes us through some the bloody awesome action sequences as Wolverine & X-23 team-up and fight to survive in the literal Hell on Earth.

Mel Gibson has ended nearly seven years without an agent by signing on the dotted line with CAA. The change comes on the heels of Gibson’s longtime manager Rick Nicitia shuttering his own agency to focus on his work as film producer, his new reps have confirmed. The actor/director was rather publicly dumped by WWE in 2010 after a flurry of bad publicity that included a booze-fueled anti-Semitic tirade directed at Malibu police and the release of recordings of racist and misogynistic tirades against his ex-girlfriend. Last year, National Geographic’s climate change documentary, “Before the Flood, executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Fisher Stevens, became the network’s most watched film ever due to it being the most broadly distributed program it had ever released.
Now Variety reports, that in an effort to continue developing outstanding nonfiction work, National Geographic Networks has launched a new banner titled National Geographic Documentary Films, which focuses on producing feature-length documentaries.
“We abandoned the space for some reason, but now we are actively resuming our proper place,” the network’s CEO Courteney Monroe told the publication. “We want to be making timely, issue-oriented, very provocative films with the very best documentary filmmakers in the business. Given the success of ‘Before the Flood’ and ‘He Named Me Malala,’ these are the types of stories we want to be telling.”

Never mind the subtitle: From literally its first seconds, which ditch the Pavlovian jolt of the series' opening crawl and John Williams' unmistakable fanfare blast of a theme, Rogue One establishes its intention to be a very different kind of "Star Wars Story." The first film in the franchise set outside a trilogy framework since George Lucas birthed this far-away galaxy in the long-ago year of 1977, director Gareth Edwards' stand-alone spinoff/prequel has a rhythm and tone all its own. The settings are murky rather than majestic. The...

Love is a battlefield – often literally so – in Robert Zemeckis’ uneven “Allied,” which attempts to harness enough glossy old Hollywood glamour to disguise a startlingly flat and just plain silly tale of spies in love.
The well-dressed affair starts strongly enough, with Canadian intelligence officer Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) silently parachuting undetected into the North African desert, where he makes obvious his prodigious ability to slip into any situation with ease. Max is soon whisked into Casablanca to meet his partner, the dazzling French Resistance fighter Marianne Beauséjour (Marion Cotillard), and the pair happily play off each other in what ends up being a dry run for the very dangerous double-crossing to come.
The duo have been matched up with the express mission to take out a high-ranking German officer at the local embassy where Marianne has been embedded for months, currying favor in order to snag a party invite...

"In this world, a man, himself, is nothing." War is hell. In late 1998, Terrence Malick release his third film, The Thin Red Line, set during World War II telling the story of a group of American soldiers fighting in the Guadalcanal Campaign in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The film was overshadowed by Saving Private Ryan, also released earlier in 1998, but earned a following in the years since as many critics have analyzed Malick's work even further. The war film has an incredible ensemble cast, including: Sean Penn, Jim Caviezel, Nick Nolte, Elias Koteas, Ben Chaplin, plus John Cusack, Adrien Brody, John C. Outlander‘s war, what is it good for? Leaving our heroine curled in the fetal position, apparently.
This week’s episode of the Starz drama delves into Claire’s experiences in World War II, which turn out to have been even more ghastly than we might’ve realized. Unfortunately for Lady Broch Tuarach, she’s not likely to be in any more comforting of an environment for some time to come, because Clan Fraser is officially marching off to battle.

Hey, it’s not like there’s no precedent for a singer-turned-actress to nab a major award early in her acting career. But for every JHud-in-Dreamgirls and Cher-in-Moonstruck, there’s a Mariah-Carey-in-Sparkle and a Madonna-in-Shanghai Surprise.

Life hasn’t gotten easier for Damien Thorn since his nanny jumped off the building ledge in The Omen. A&E’s new sequel series to Richard Donner’s film shows that being the Antichrist isn’t one big devilish party, but rather a hellish struggle for your very soul. Instead, Damien is quite human and has an occupation you might not expect: war photographer.
