RoboCop became both a blockbuster and a controversial critical darling upon its release in 1987 due to a mix of jet black humor and as subtle as a jackhammer social commentary sticking a perfect landing. Its success was a surprise to an industry that had looked at Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner’s original script with its simplistic one-word comic book title and assumed it was fated to be a high-concept stinker.
The 2023 RoboDoc documentary miniseries does a terrific job of chronicling the effort it took to turn RoboCop into both a box office win and an enduring cult masterpiece with a quick and funny format that makes it accessible to modern fans. 2023 was a tumultuous year for television, but amid the turmoil was some standout horror programming that celebrates the genre’s versatility, from “The Fall of the House of Usher” to “Swarm.”
The television landscape grows increasingly proliferated as streaming services continue to spawn and transform like hordes of zombies. There have never been more places to consume content, which in itself can be both exciting and overwhelming for audiences. Horror has been warmly embraced by television and the prospect of a graphic genre program is no longer the gambit that it used to be. Programming from across the world collectively taps into the universal fears that get under the audience’s skin, many of which become even more intense through extended binge-watch sessions. There’s something for everyone when it comes to 2023’s eclectic horror series, whether it’s killer dolls in the White House, inspired reimaginings of Edgar Allan Poe,...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Rutger Hauer, the actor who played the villainous Roy Batty in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner in a career in which he became a staple in genre films, died July 19 in his native the Netherlands after a long illness. He was 75.
A funeral was held today, Hauer’s agent Steve Kenis told Deadline.
Hauer was born January 23, 1944 in Breukelen in the Netherlands. He attended the Academy for Theater and Dance in Amsterdam before being drafted into the Royal Netherlands Army. He was part of an experimental theater troupe before being cast by Paul Verhoeven in the 1969 Dutch TV action drama Floris.
His first role stateside was in 1981 in the film Nighthawks opposite Sylvester Stallone, but it was his role as Roy Batty in the 1982 cult classic Blade Runner that put him in the spotlight and made him a formidable name amongst the cult fan community of the Ridley Scott film.

Rutger Hauer, the versatile Dutch leading man of the ’70s who went on star in the 1982 “Blade Runner” as Roy Batty, died July 19 at his home in the Netherlands after a short illness. He was 75.
Hauer’s agent, Steve Kenis, confirmed the news and said that Hauer’s funeral was held Wednesday.
His most cherished performance came in a film that was a resounding flop on its original release. In 1982, he portrayed the murderous yet soulful Roy Batty, leader of a gang of outlaw replicants, opposite Harrison Ford in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi noir opus “Blade Runner.” The picture became a widely influential cult favorite, and Batty proved to be Hauer’s most indelible role.
More recently, he appeared in a pair of 2005 films: as Cardinal Roark in “Sin City,” and as the corporate villain who Bruce Wayne discovers is running the Wayne Corp. in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins.

When the Philadelphia Flyers officially unveiled the team’s new mascot in September, the googly-eyed orange monster quickly became one of Twitter’s fiercest obsessions. Now, more than three months later, the creature known as “Gritty” has launched a thousand memes and the social media phenom shows no signs of stopping. (He just graced the cover of Artforum’s year-end issue.)
The internet’s collective interest seems driven by a series of unanswerable questions: Where did he come from? Was he born or made? Does Gritty actually ascribe to gendered pronouns? Was he born in the sewers under a hockey stadium? What is Gritty? Despite a cyclone of reporting on the mascot — some serious, some very serious — his genesis remains a thing of legend. However, the most recent installment of Hulu’s “Into the Dark” series may offer some much-needed answers.

The series starts with "The Body," about a hitman who uses social media to make his latest conquest extra special, followed by November’s "Flesh & Blood," which focuses on a teenager with agoraphobia who thinks her dad is a killer. Blum also teased episodes around a pageant winner on New Year’s Day and an overprotective mom for Mother’s Day. He said no holiday is off limits.

Even if some of their films haven’t been your cup of tea, none of us can deny the force in the industry that Blumhouse Productions has become. In the past decade or so, they’ve enthralled audiences with new franchises such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Ouija, The Purge and, my personal favorite, Sinister, to name but a few.
But now, they’re aiming to find new ways of keeping us awake at night, this time via the growing digital streaming market. In fact, they’re pairing with the immensely popular platform Hulu for an anthology series known as Into the Dark, which will premiere a new episode every month over the course of a year.
What’s more is that each installment will be feature-length, so expect to be in for a well-rounded viewing experience whenever you tune in. “The Body” will be the first to roll out on...

Hulu has given out series order to the adaptation of “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and a comedy starring Ramy Youssef, the streaming service announced Wednesday.
“Four Weddings and a Funeral,” based on the 1994 British film of the same name, will follow a group of friends as their lives intersect through five events. The limited series is written and executive produced by Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton, who previously worked together on “The Mindy Project.” Jonathan Prince, Howard Klein, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner will also executive produce.
MGM Television and Universal Television will produce, with MGM serving as the lead studio. MGM currently produces the acclaimed Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” while Universal produced both “The Path” and “The Mindy Project.”
“Ramy” is based on the real-life experiences and comedy of Youssef. The series follows Ramy, a first generation American Muslim who is on a spiritual journey in his politically-divided New Jersey neighborhood.

Let the year of Derbel McDillet continue: Seven years after Dylan McDermott’s starring role in the landmark anthology horror series “American Horror Story,” Dermot Mulroney will star in his own landmark anthology horror series, “Into the Dark.”
Hulu unveiled new details Wednesday morning about the previously announced series from Blumhouse Television, including a release date, list of cast and crew, plot summaries, and more.
Running year-round, “Into the Dark” will release new episodes on the first Friday of every month. For anyone worried about a lack of content, don’t: Each standalone entry will be feature-length, essentially turning the series into a Movie of the Month club run by Blumhouse — the production company behind “Get Out,” “Insidious,” and “The Purge.”
