This month, Helen Woodward Animal Center will once again unite with animal welfare proponents and organizations worldwide for the 5th Annual Remember Me Thursday.
Honored on the fourth Thursday of September, the campaign asks pet lovers and animal rescue groups to create an unstoppable, integrated voice advocating for homeless pets to live in forever homes, not die waiting for them. Grassroots candle-lighting ceremonies and a global avalanche of social media buzz will shine a light on the millions of animals still awaiting adoption and encourage communities to opt to adopt and reduce the millions of homeless pets euthanized each year. As in previous years, some very big names are stepping forward to lend their support to the cause, including Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress, Kristin Chenoweth, who has been named the 2017 Official Spokesperson for the campaign. When Diane Keaton accepted the 45th AFI Life Achievement Award from Woody Allen in Hollywood Thursday night, it was the end of one of the more memorable AFI tributes. And as one actress after another explained why Keaton was such a significant role model — from Oscar-winners Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon (Keaton-directed TV movie “Wildflower”) and Meryl Streep (“Marvin’s Room”) to Rachel McAdams (“The Family Stone”) and comedienne Lisa Kudrow (“Hanging Up”) — it struck me that all actresses should pay attention to why Keaton is so admired and emulated.
Here are some wise lessons to be learned from the star of “Play It Again Sam,” “The First Wives Club,” “Crimes of the Heart,” “Shoot the Moon,” and HBO’s “The Young Pope.”
1. Stay single.
Keaton launched her Hollywood career with the day-long wedding scene in “The Godfather,” at the end of which she and fellow theater outsider Al Pacino proceeded to get royally drunk.

Terrence Howard can’t help but gush about his little boys.
“See what we have, two strapping young men,” the Empire star, 48, tells People while watching his sons Quirin, 22 months, and Hero, 7 months, play poolside in a Southern California backyard.
Becoming a dad to Quirin and Hero — his sons with third wife, Mira, whom he wed in 2013 — was not Howard’s first foray into parenthood. He has three grown children — Aubrey, 23, Hunter, 21, and Heaven, 19 — with his first wife, Lori.
“I was 24 when I started my first batch. I was still becoming a man,” Howard says of being a young father.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the first season of “The Young Pope.”]
The finale of “The Young Pope’s” first (but hopefully not final) season was a true test of faith for some fans, leaving them with more questions than they had going into the episode.
Lenny Belardo (Jude Law), aka Pope Pius Xiii, finally showed his face to address his flock with the global message to “smile,” but after spying what looked like his elderly parents in the crowd, he collapsed. It is unclear if this event presages his imminent death or if he’ll merely be sidelined while recovering. We’re not even sure if the show will continue another season or if/how Lenny’s future would play out in it. Seeking enlightenment, IndieWire turned to the show’s creator Paolo Sorrentino, who agreed to answer our burning questions.

Once a blockbuster staple, the power ballad was the ultimate movie accompaniment. We look back at some of the classics...
For a glorious period from the mid-80s throughout the 90s, the biggest summer blockbusters were only worth their salt if they had an equally gargantuan song at the head their soundtrack. Often the success of one was inexorably linked to the other, with the likes of Four Weddings And A Funeral's feats matched and even exceeded by Wet Wet Wet's accompanying Love Is All Around.
The greatest and most successful songs belong to the power ballad genre, and are as emotionally charged and forceful as the gods of epic balladry such as Journey, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and Meat Loaf. As the 90s became the 00s and the charts became increasingly irrelevant, the movie ballad became almost defunct, with even the song-dominant film soundtrack being...

Prior to it appearing on AMC (home of Meth!), I’d never been indoctrinated into the seminal comic book series Preacher. I long knew of its quality – nary a person within the geek-menagerie of every comic shop I’d lived in was without someone constantly droning on the merits of the Garth Ennis road-trip-opus. But much like many series of my middle-youth (Transmetropolitan, Fables, Sandman, etc.) I was far too much of a commercial whore to appreciate the boundary stretching sequential fiction that didn’t plaster its protagonists in capes and cowls. Luckily, I grew up.
We live in a gilded age of comic-to-mainstream-media. Even just listing the current crop of comic-based bounty choking our airspace right now could be an article unto itself. That Seth Rogan and his production team would tackle a show as complex as Preacher due to their love of the source meant good things. And...

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.
It would of course be so easy to simply concentrate on the well known, iconic,...

Producer Seth Rogen has confirmed that Dominic Cooper is officially set to star as Jesse Custer in AMC’s pilot for Preacher. It was reported last month that Cooper was the network's top choice to take on the role, and it's awesome to see that everything worked out. I really wanted to see Cooper in the role of Jesse.
The series is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s ‘90s comic book series, and it follows Reverend Jesse Custer, "a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, and has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned his responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making him answer for his dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent.

Around this time last year, AMC began work on its adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s nineties comic book Preacher, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg tasked with ushering it to the small screen. Whether it’s in light of their dwindling line-up – Breaking Bad has come and gone, and Mad Men is set to wrap soon – or something else entirely, the network are rumored to be kicking things up a notch.
A speculative spot of casting news has recently commenced its jaunt around the web – and it’s one we recommend ingesting with a smidgen of salt. According to a source over at The Tracking Board, Agent Carter star Dominic Cooper is the frontrunner for the lead role of supernatural reverend Jessie Custer.
Cooper has plenty of experience in the dominion of comic book adaptations, which might explain the choice. He appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger as Howard Stark,...

Well, that’s it. Take a long lunch. Or go home early. Make some popcorn. Ingest some substances. And settle in for Diane Keaton’s directorial debut. Released in 1987, “Heaven” is a documentary that investigates different people’s assumptions, beliefs, and thoughts on the afterlife — and it does so in glorious, ridiculous fashion. With a good old Wtf intro from Look Video to kick things off right, "Heaven" gets off to a great start. The 80-minute documentary itself, though, offers even more promise. Take, for example, the first subject. Though he appears at the 49-second mark, postulating about the meaning of Heaven, it’s not for another 34-seconds, until 1:23, that he offers anything other than an “uh” or an “um.” Riveting. Of course, there’s little need to focus on him when he’s seated against the backdrop of space. Yes, as in outer-space. At one point, there's a...

The two rang in 2015 at a nightclub and the owner announced on stage that the two are set to welcome a baby. A beaming Howard, 45, told E! The ongoing contract negotiations with CBS/Wbtv and the core cast of "The Big Bang Theory" loomed over Friday (July 25) morning's San Diego Comic-Con panel, or at least the negotiations loomed if you happened to be obsessed with such things. If you're not, the negotiations were a total non-factor in the spirited and amusing give-and-take between the show's writers, moderator Craig Ferguson and the Comic-Con crowd. According to a Deadline.com story, question monitors at the panel prevented Deadline from asking about the negotiations, which raises exactly two issues for me: 1) The writers of "The Big Bang Theory," for the most part, could hardly have less to do with negotiations that are going on far, far, far above their paygrade or job description. Even the highest ranking writers on the panel, folks like co-creator Bill Prady and showrunner Steve Molaro, could hardly have less to do with those negotiations and...

Line-up
Puppy Bowl: The 10th annual telecast had puppies, kittens for the half-time show, penguin cheerleaders and a bird tweeting updates. — Winner
Kitten Bowl: Kittens. Lots and lots of tiny kittens; 71 of them.
Fish Bowl: More than just the fish. Other fish joined at various points.

The American Idol Season 12 Top 8 will be faced with a tricky theme this Wednesday (8/7c on Fox): Detroit: The Music of Motor City.
Yep, it’s essentially another way of saying Motown Week, and as such, I’m gritting my teeth bracing for an onslaught of songs we’ve already heard one too many times in prior Idol seasons — “(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave,” “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” and “Let’s Get It On” to name a few.

Mesfin Fekadu's picks:
1. Nas, "Life is Good": "I am a graphic classic song composer," Nas raps on the intro to his latest album. And he's right. You may disagree, but Nas is the best rapper alive, and with "Life is Good," he's got the year's top album, regardless of genre. On "Life," he's spitting rhymes about his ex-wife, Kelis – like the soulful "Bye Baby" – his daughter on "Daughters" and his childhood on "A Queens Story." He's a top-notch lyricist with a knack for storytelling, and it all makes for impeccable music. He knows life is good, and so is this album.
2. Of Monsters and Men, "My Head Is an Animal": The Icelandic fivesome have melodies that are eerie, jamming, groovy and overall epic. The voices of the male and female lead singers blend so beautifully that it sounds like magic.

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

American entertainer and singer popular in the 1940s and 50s
The American entertainer Tony Martin, who has died aged 98, was once described as a singing tuxedo. Although he was rather a stiff actor, he was handsome and charming, with a winning, dimpled smile. What mattered most, however, was his mellifluous baritone voice, which he used softly in ballads such as To Each His Own and I Get Ideas, and powerfully in Begin the Beguine and There's No Tomorrow, all hit records in the 1940s and 50s.
He was one of the top crooners of the period with Vic Damone, Andy Williams and Dick Haymes, all of them just below Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra in esteem and popularity. According to Mel Tormé: "Tony Martin was technically the greatest singer of them all, as well as being the classiest guy around, both as an entertainer and a person."

Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery debate which 'Then and Now' hits the 'Idol' top seven should tackle.

The "American Idol" top seven took on current hits last week, and look how well things turned out! Uh, wait, never mind.
Anyway, after Jessica Sanchez escaped elimination thanks to the judges' save (which officially marked the first time this season they've actually done something right), "Idol" producers decided to up the ante for Wednesday night's (April 18) show by letting the contestants sing both a #1 from the past decade — since it worked so well before — and a classic soul tune.
Yes, it's "Then and Now" week on "Idol," which, come to think of it, is a pretty apt way of viewing the show's steady decline. It also means we're going to see the usual front-runners strut their stuff: Sanchez will dominate a Beyoncé hit,...

Wednesday’s installment of American Idol was supposed to focus on Songs From the Year the Contestants Were Born, but in some cases, it felt more like Opposites Day: Steven Tyler woke up from a very long nap and started doling out crotchety critiques. Jennifer Lopez tried to give songwriting lessons (¡ay dios mio!) to Bonnie Raitt. And more than half of this week’s contestants picked songs that were not intially released in the years of their birth. Why the face?

Wednesday night might go down in history as the most awkward night in "American Idol" lore. Forget for a minute that producers called out gentle giant Jermaine "Four Warrant" Jones on TV for lying to them about his criminal past. It was also the night that viewers may have realized that their top 11 either have the worst taste in music of anyone on the planet or are the very last people you would ever want to share a playlist with.
Usually it's a disco or Dolly Parton night that's the great equalizer during "Idol" theme nights. But on an evening when all they had to do was pick a song from the year they were born, most of your American idols fell flatter than a Heejun Han high note,...

There have been plenty of creepy songs over the last thousand or so years. (Mozart‘s Requiem anybody? Well everybody, eventually.) We’ve decided to compile The 88 Creepiest Song Titles Of All Time. To be fair, we left out pretty much every death metal title because, frankly, they’re all pretty creepy. Click on the names of each artist to hear the selection. And feel free to weigh in on any song titles we may have left out in the comments. 88. “My Ding-a-Ling” Chuck Berry A no-brainer. It’s a song about a little boy discovering his penis, and it’s sung by a man well into his 40s. Perverted Justice’s favorite tune. 87. “Two Lovely Black Eyes” Charles Coborn What’s lovelier than a woman who was beaten in the face twice? Hollywoodnews.com: Warner Bros. has announced its intent to have Ron Howard as director for a major adaptation of “Under the Banner of Heaven,” just days after Universal rejected another adaptation project.
In the 2003 Jon Krakauer book of the same name, two members of a fundamentalist Mormon sect claim that they murdered the wife and child of their brother on orders from god. The story traces the history of the fundamentalist sect and its place in the whole of Mormonism.
The Wrap reported that the deal and the rights acquisition are moving ahead. Thankfully Dustin Lance Black has been tapped to write the script. His previous credits (Gus Van Sant’s “Milk” and Clint Eastwood’s upcoming “J. Edgar”), and the Oscar sitting on his desk, give the scriptwriting enough bona fides not to worry critics. The concern is that Howard may be spread too thin.

To the disappointment of some and the relief of others, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Universal's ambitious plans fell through the other day to adapt Stephen King's epic Dark Tower series for both film and TV. But it looks like Howard and Grazer have found another adaptation project to sink their teeth into. Deadline is exclusively reporting that Warner Bros. is in the process of putting together a package to adapt the book Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith, with an eye on Howard to direct and Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black to write the script. Howard will also produce with his Imagine Entertainment partner Grazer. The trio just worked together on the upcoming Clint Eastwood-directed J. Edgar biopic. The...

As one door closes—another door opens for Ron Howard. After a day Universal Pictures backed out of Howard’s ambitious project “The Dark Tower,” Warner Brothers Pictures took the opportunity to have him in a new project. The studio plans to adapt the Jon Krakauer novel “Under the Banner of Heaven” on to the big screen. Scriptwriter Dustin Lance Black (“J. Edgar,” “Milk”) will write the script adaptation. It would be Krakauer's second adapted book since 2007's "Into the Wild." Here is the book’s synopsis: At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a multi-layered, bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith. Along the way he uncovers a shadowy...

Don't cry for Ron Howard. Though it was announced on Monday that Universal Pictures had scuttled Howard's ambitious project to turn Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' Western fantasy books into a film and TV series, on Tuesday Warner Bros. announced that the director was part of a package to adapt Jon Krakauer's 2003 book 'Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith.'
The book is based on Ron and Dan Lafferty who, in 1984, murdered the wife and infant daughter of their younger brother Allen. The brothers -- members of a fundamentalist Mormon sect -- claimed that they were acting on direct orders from God. The book explores not only the heinous crime but the at-times-violent Mormon splinter group School of Prophets that adheres to polygamy and a belief that true believers can speak directly with God.

These were rooted as...
